9A2 - and things are OK again

A few months ago I messed up the programmable thermostat. Been setting the temperature manually, turning it down before going to bed, turning it up in the morning ... and I lost the manual.
So I call my heating guy, Matt. He tells me I've got a two stage gas furnace. He says to pull the thermostat off the wall (it plugs into a socket), and on the back is a model number and to find the manual on the internet.
Plenty of obscure, or semi-obscure codes explained in the manual, AC1, HP2, 9A2, and the manual says what they are:
- AC1 (Air Conditioning, single stage)
- HP2 (Heat Pump, two stage)
- EL1 (electric, single stage)
- 9A1 (GAS furnace, single stage)
- 9A2 ( GAS furnace, two stage)
GAS two stage !! In less frustration, my mind was open to ponder it. Then I see it, the "9" looks like a lower case "g", its the best they can do on a cheaper digital type display.
So back to 9A2 and things are OK again. Why is life so ... so ... obscure?
