9 to 5

Thursday, May 28, 2020

9 to 5 (or Nine go Five in the credits) clickity-clacked it’s way onto the theater screens in 1980 - kind of a female power embodiment comedy. Violet (Lily Tomlin) is the mainstay of the company - she’s been training the “boy’s club” for years. Judy (Jane Fonda) has been recently dumped by her husband - she’s tip-toeing back into the working world. And Doralee (Dolly Parton) is the harassed secretary. Their floor supervisor, Franklin Hart (Dabney Coleman)is a chauvinist, creepy, harassing jerk - who has told the staff is having an affair with Doralee. When Violet hears Hart has stolen her business idea & is getting another promotion, she storms out to go to a bar - but not before she accuses Doralee about the supposed affair. Doralee has a come to Jesus meeting with Hart & storms out to the bar. Roz, the office suck-up, tells Hart another employee was overheard discussing Hart & Roz’s salaries - she is immediately fired. Judy sees the other woman being fired - so Judy storms out to the bar. Violet finds a marijuana cigarette in her purse (her son gave us to her), & the women go to Doralee’s place to smoke it. They get high, swap fantasy ideas what they would do to him if they could. The next day, Hart doesn’t even mention the walkout. Violet fixes a cup of coffee for Hart (Doralee was off doing his outside pickups), she accidentally put rat poison in the coffee. Hart fell out of his wobbly chair & hits his head, spilling the coffee, Doralee finds him unconscious & calls 911. She & Judy race to the hospital, finds Doralee, tells them she’s killed the boss.

(Violet: I'm no fool. I've killed the boss, you think they're not gonna fire me for a thing like that?)

The women overhear police officers talking about a man killed (by mobsters) & think Hart is dead - meanwhile, Hart woke up from the bump on his head & left without the trio knowing that. Violet steals the dead body (he’s covered up, so doesn’t see his face), they stuff the body into the trunk of the car. They drive off, Violet driving, & the car runs off the road, smashing a fender. That’s when they realize it’s the wrong body, manage to return it via a wheelchair. Hart just shows up the next day, Ron overhears them talking about the fiasco, tells Hart. He decides to make Doralee be his mistress, she flips out & tie him up with the phone cord. Yada, yada, yada - out trio kidnaps Hart & stow him @ his empty house (wifey is off to a retreat). They find evidence of fraud - Hart’s been stealing from the company. The heroines manage to pretend to the office that Hart is off on a working retreat for weeks. They send Roz off to an intensive French language training site. They reorganize the office, allowing work-sharing, personalization of their cubicles, etc. work production goes up. After some time passes, Hart has managed to get loose, but pretends to be still tied up @ the house - he manages to hide evidence of fraud.

All’s well that ends well - Hart is promoted to Brazil, Violet is given the supervisor’s position. Judy falls I love with the Xerox man, Doralee quits & becomes a country western singer.

9 to 5, Dolly Parton, 1980

Tumble outta bed and I stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
Yawn and stretch and try to come to alive
Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin'
Out on the street the traffic starts jumpin'
With folks like me on the job from 9 to 5

Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
9 to 5, for service and devotion
You would think that I would deserve a fat promotion
Want to move ahead but the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes that man is out to get me!

Please submit your ideas to me today
So I can submit them as my own tomorrow)

They let you dream just to watch 'em shatter
You're just a step on the boss-man's ladder
But you got dreams he'll never take away
You're in the same boat with a lotta your friends
Waitin' for the day your ship'll come in
An' the tide's gonna turn and it's all gonna roll your way

Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind and you never get the credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it
9 to 5, yeah they got you where they want you
There's a better life, and you dream about it, don't you?
It's a rich man's game no matter what they call it
And you spend your life puttin' money in his wallet

9 to 5, whoa what a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it

9 to 5, yeah they got you where they want you
There's a better life, and you dream about it, don't you?
It's a rich man's game no matter what they call it
And you spend your life puttin' money in his wallet
