Sometimes life sends curve balls and we have to adjust.
Yesterday’s visit at the Quabbin Valley HealthCare Center was very different. I had invited family and friends to join me, and there were 8 people (Donna, Bruce, Christopher, Jayden, Lynn, Didi, John and I ) and one dog. I was sure that Mom would be smiling when we made our way to her window. On my 90 minute drive, I had called, and felt that everything was ready. Only it did not work out as I had thought.
Mom was sleeping, and the Dementia Unit was not going to get her up. We were there, and Mom was not going to be at the window. I was disappointed. Even the dog was crying. But then everything changed.
A gentleman came to the window, and looked out at our group. We smiled, and waved at him. We became his family, and told him that it was good to see him. We loved him, and he looked good today. As we left, we blew him kisses and said good-bye.
Maybe Mom did not need our visit today as much as we needed to be there. I know that the gentleman on the inside, looking for family on the outside smiled when he saw us, and waved at us. We were his welcoming and loving family this morning.
Maybe I missed seeing my mom today, but I know that Mom got her rest, and a lonely gentleman got a visit from us. That was a good visit! We took family pictures, and drove back to our homes, glad that we went to the Quabbin today.
