Steel Magnolias

Monday, June 01, 2020

Steel Magnolias charmed its way onto the movie screens in 1987.Set in a Louisiana southern town, it opens of the day of Shelby’s wedding (she’s a type 1 diabetic). The major women are M’Lynn, Shelby’s mom, Truvy who owns & operates the beauty salon, her new hire is Annelle , fresh out of beauty school, Clairee who used to be the First Lady of the town (she’s apparently filthy rich), & Louisa (Ouiser) is the town curmudgeon. She & Clairee are best frenemies, & also filthy rich. With the exception of Annelle, most of the major players (including their menfolk)are related by blood, marriage, or both.

After her marriage, Shelby & husband moved away, but come back for holidays. At Christmas, Shelby tells M’Lynn se is pregnant - Shelby has been cautioned to not get pregnant (BTW, Shelby is a nurse). The baby is born & seems to be healthy, but Shelby is on dualysis - M’Lynn donates a kidney. The transplant worked, but Shelby gets a brain infection from the immunosuppressant drugs, goes into an irreversible come, & is removed from life support. After the funeral, M’Lynn has a mini-breakdown, the other women support her. M’Lynn starts yelling about it not being right, she should have died before her daughter. “I just want to hit somebody!” Clairee pushes Ouiser forward, yelling “Hit Ouisier! Knock her lights out!” The women are stunned, but finally they laugh (except Ouiser).

Over time, M’Lynn accepts how Shelby wanted her baby so badly, she was willing to take the risk. Annelle married her boyfriend, gets pregnant & asks M’Lynn if she can name the baby after Shelby. “Life goes on” M’Lynn says. The movie is based on the 1987 play of the same name, written by Robert Harling, whose sister had type 1 diabetes & died. It doesn’t sound like a good movie, but it’s mostly about the the 6 main women. Wonderfully written & acted, humor, pathos, Joy & tears. The play had only the core women, & there were no men on stage.
