My new computer

It’s 7 pm and I’ve finished my prep for tomorrow. I couldn’t believe it. After midnight is normal. When I talk to non teacher friends about this online teaching life, they say, “All my friends who are teachers are saying exactly the same thing.” That’s reassuring. I’m not a crazy workaholic. There’s been a slight uptick in corona cases in Tokyo. I hope we won’t be teaching online until the end of the school year early in 2021.

I do occasionally enjoy this teaching. I get less stage fright than when I’m in front of 35 students for one thing. But there have been so many panicked moments. We had a clap of thunder above the house and it shook. And then a small black hole appeared on my screen. The next morning it was spreading slowly. I got a new computer and found out it doesn’t take 20-30 minutes to get onto Zoom - more like one or two minutes. Then I found Adobe wasn’t on the new computer. Agh! More retyping of materials! But I got it back.

I have a stack of mid-term tests to grade - except on email, it’s not a “stack.” But I’m just about past the halfway mark for this term.

Oh look at who's smiling at you from the computer screen!!!

I'm glad the new computer works faster - I hope your long days fade into a dim memory. Congratulations on getting to the halfway point of those exams.

    big hugs to you, sweetie.

That sounds SO demanding . . . and I'm hoping your employer at least kicked in for the new computer!!

And I see from your status post that you're still hoping to organized even ONE day off. Your present pace feels non-sustainable: perhaps you could grant yourself a mental health day???

I remember those end of term reports and finding different things to say about students, that and tactfully mentioning that they really weren’t very bright....

That must be a picture of your adorable grand baby on your screen.
Glad to hear that your prep time is getting less.
I think the universe decided it took a big act to get you to buy a new computer.

Glad you got a new computer! I was just wondering yesterday if they will reopen schools after this "summer break". I bet they don't.

You have given a lot of yourself! emoticon

Teaching is extremely demanding of ones time and energy. At least for me it has been. There was a year that I worked every single day in a calendar year except 1. Yes. That's right. I worked at least part of every singe holiday. Every single weekend. And, every single day during our summer break. I was not teaching during the summer session. My choice. Worked the summer writing a grant proposal (which was successful) to secure scholarship funds from the NSF (National Science Foundation) for our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students.

I've taught semi-hybrid (some online + in-person) classes; but, not fully online. Everyone I know that has taught online has told me that online teaching required more time and energy of them than the in-person teaching. So, you are absolutely not crazy. The time and energy demands come with the territory.

This is taking some getting used to for all of us. In the US, the may go on longer than expected sadly.
