Happy Independence Day, American Spark Friends!!

Saturday, July 04, 2020

American Sparkies' expressions of good will to Canada on Canada Day July 1st were so much appreciated.

And now it's your turn!! July 4th!! Independence Day for you . . . and a day that often makes me think about how INTERdependent Canada is with the USA.

We share a long border which throughout most of our neighbourly history has been wide open and undefended. Across that border we share much culturally, too: music, TV shows, movies, books, art . . .

It seems to me that right now our COVID situation further underlies our interdependence, both politically and with respect to health realities.

Now more than ever before, we rely upon each other: to do the right thing. To set aside any political differences or bi-partisan "signalling". To work together to contain the spread of this virus: wearing masks in public please, and washing our hands, and maintaining physical distancing.

We are interdependent. As countries. As states or provinces within our countries. And even as individuals within our respective countries too.

The virus knows no boundaries. Our health depends quite literally upon each other.

We have always been interdependent. We just realize it more now.

Many American Sparkies have expressed a wish for a peaceful, quiet, mutually respectful 4th of July celebration. And that's what we wish for you, too!!

Happy Independence Day! Respectful INTERdependence Day. Go forth . . . with a mask!!

Celebrating in place here in Southern Maine. Spent the morning working in my gardens-so many days of rain in a row I was way behind in the weeding and deadheading departments. Tomorrow I want to finish installing the weed blocking border on the shade garden on the North side of the house. Thank you for the Happy 4th message emoticon . We are missing our Canadian emoticon friends who usually visit our beaches this time of year, but can't 'cause the border is closed. emoticon Stay safe up North and come back soon.

Thank you!!! And I think this virus has reminded us how interdependent the entire world is, even if we don't share a border.

But yes, we share one of the longest borders with your nation, and it is also one of the longest peaceful borders timewise! May we share another couple of hundred years of peaceful interdependence!!!

Thanks to a wet week, all the fireworks that were set off in our area caused no harm on Canada Day. Hopefully our American friends will have safe celebrations.
Happy Independence Day to my American friends.

Thank you from one of your emoticon friends who values my emoticon friends and others in our chaotic world. For isn't life all about 'relationships'?

I for my part today offer up a different kind of celebrating the fourth of July emoticon

No rockets red blare, no bombs bursting in air...but a thoughtful reflection about my country. Not who we are, but what we want to be. "To form a more perfect union" is not a arrival place, but a destination. And without a real understanding of our history, we will never get there. So the journey continues with fervor and anticipation.

To right the ship emoticon on these stormy seas will take everyone's commitment.

I ask myself, when did doing the right thing for humanity become disdainful and anti-American.? Staying home today, thinking and educating myself, and socializing at a social distance with my neighbors outside.

I dreamt last night that I went to my healthcare clinic for a normal checkup and no one was wearing a mask and the building was teeming with people. I escaped to find a mask, but none were to be had. When I woke I realized 'masks had been banned' as a sign of patriotism.

When will the nightmare be over? Is the damage too great to be repaired? We shall overcome has taken special meaning to me.

We also love our neighbors to the north....we have gone to Canada all the time since I was young....things have changed now but we still love our Canadian family!!!! emoticon emoticon

Great respect for our neighbors to the North... sometimes blushed face here for the behavior of my compatriots... but all in all hoping the INTERdependence continues and thrives. At some point we have to stop denying the ugly bits, accept our role in them, and build the future, one day at a time, one kindness at a time.

I always think of my Canadian neighbors as "neighbors" and not a different country.
I've visited a few times and it hasn't felt any different than here.....except when I had to call medical facilities in Quebec as they were my customers!
LOL, no French-speaker here but lucky me I could find someone who's English was as good as mine!

    Thank you!

We will not be physically going forth this fourth ... sheltering in place ... hoping for quiet ... it has been anything but ... typical of this time of year ...

Yesterday morning we were awakened by the strong smell of smoke (likely a grassland fire ... there have been many in recent days due to the illegal use of fireworks ... awakened last night by very bright flashes of light from fireworks that appeared to have landed in our backyard ... dear hubby got up to make sure nothing had caught fire

Mexico, our neighbor to the south, has closed its border with Arizona.

We are INTERdependent and that appears to be a lesson that will get learned here via the school of hard knocks.

A neighbor held a very large gathering for their grandfather's birthday recently. He is actively battling cancer. Sent a shudder through my spine. He (Papa to them. Pepe to me) is dear to me. A cancer battle is challenging enough. Covid-19 on top of cancer? What are they thinking?! And, one of his daughters works in a hospital and his son is a fitness professional.

In fairness to them, perhaps, they know his cancer prognosis is grim and they're going to spend time with him while they can. Because truth is we are all going to die at some point.

Keep hoping folks won't tan those flames.

Oh well, oh well, oh well ...

    Thanks again!
