Summer Time and the Living Is Easy

During these extremely warm days, my thoughts go to the past to my grandparents. There was no air-conditioning on the farm. Most everything was done by horse and mule. No indoor plumbing so water had to be pumped and laundry was done by hand. Being farmers, they provided most of their own food or bartered with neighbors. Grandpa and one of his horses would turn the pressing machine to make cane sugar. His farm had the cherry tree and another neighbor provided the strawberries.
There was such a bond with nature. The animals were always cared for first. My dog and cat like to remind me of that. I can't imagine having to heat a wood stove on a day like today to have three huge meals on the table.
There is hardly a day that goes by that I don't think about my grandparents--even though I was only one when my grandfather died. What a legacy!
