Corona-virus blog - look away now if you're sick of hearing about it!

I just had to share this from our UK leader........... the restrictions are being eased more and more, but still expecting people to 'stay safe' by washing hands, wearing masks, maintaining social distance. Right.

This is extracted from local news report - from 1st August, PM Boris Johnson is announcing almost completed 'easement' for all businesses and activities. A totally emotive and irrational expectation that things will be 'normal by Christmas'! And in the next breath saying that he is 'preparing for the worst' during the winter season. I know that all health professionals in our county have been told they cannot book any leave from September.

emoticon

"He went on to say: "It is my strong and sincere hope that we will be able to review the outstanding restrictions and allow a more significant return to normality from November, at the earliest, possibly in time for Christmas."

However, he stressed that mask-wearing and social distancing will continue to be the 'new normal'

This is despite his chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, earlier saying there is "absolutely no reason" to change the advice.

Mr Johnson also said his plan for preparing the NHS for a potential second spike in Covid-19 cases coinciding with the flu season this winter, as "hoping for the best, but planning for the worst".

emoticon

Yesterday I had a face-fit test for a different mask at work. They're horrible things used by welders. This is because the masks we were using are being 're-directed' to the NHS - so we have to use something else. Of course, they're made in China. China could totally dry up our PPE supplies any time. You have to strap them on VERY tight to create a seal - and you can get hypoxic effects after several hours - mostly from trapped co2 - we find we get sleepy.

And has anyone noticed how they seem to have completely dropped any concern about the virus being able to transmit via the eyes?

That looks like a pretty intense mask there. I see on again off again (literally) use of masks in part of USA that I live in. It seems that England and America have a common issue. Incompetent leadership. It’s scary.

Whoops, I posted once here already. Pardon my overzealous Spark commenting!

I have one thing to say: AAARGH! (A direct quote from the cartoon character Charlie Brown).

Hang in there, Gill. Take care of you, because that's all we can do. This is my latest mantra.

I am fortunate that my governor listens to science as he is a doctor by training. He did not open the state without following the guidelines issued by the federal government in April which the president did not forcefully tell the states to follow. We are in Phase 3 but the governor did a partial rollback in the part of the state that has had a spike. We have not had one voice and the US is the laughingstock of the world. I don't there will be any return to normalcy until there is a vaccine and therapies.

This is a scary (crazy time.) Our governor has said that we must wear masks. I started wearing them as soon as I had one available. I am fortunate that my health insurance company sent me 5 free masks to go along with the others that I have.

I was at the doctor's office a month ago and then again today. Now many of the people there and at the testing site are wearing face screens.

In the USA, it feels like the places that are best at wearing masks and social distancing are the ones that have had real calamity with COVID. I've learned that the people conscientious about those things shop in the morning in my area. In the afternoon, grocery shopping with masks and social distancing is a lot less likely.

It seems we're all expendable to the President. He's more concerned about the stock market and opening everything. Unfortunately it is a joke since stupidity rules the da in a lot of areas. People refuse to wear masks. Ugh! I am so frustrated by it

All I can say is i am grateful our governor is listening to medical advice rather than other politicians. He flat-out said we will go back to phase three or even two if the number of cases goes up. emoticon

I just wondered Gill if you are in a union, or would think about joining one. They could perhaps take these issues up on a bigger scale than any individual could do. I'm not a militant unionist or anything like it, but over the years I did value what they fought for on behalf of the people who, individually, wouldn't have had much clout. Just a thought - and I don't mean it controversially!

I think our leaders are cut from the same cloth. **SIGH** And it’s costing lives. Our chief health advisor’s counsel is being ignored, as well. Not working too well.

That’s a HUGE problem – the hypoxia from the build up of CO2 wearing masks.

Just simply put, the whole world is in a mess.

All we can do is take care of ourselves the best we know how.

Good idea. I stocked up back in March, but my stocks have run low. I need to re-stock!

I understand your concern. I am fortunate to live in Canada. We seem to be taking a conservative view and I am GREAT with that. I have stocked up on non-perishables for the fall/winter season - rice, dry beans, canned goods, etc. I will stock up our freezer in a couple of months. Fingers crossed it isn't necessary but I want to be ready!

We do at work. But in the community eyes are not protected - I guess because most people wouldn't adhere to it.

I try to avoid listening to/ watching Boris Johnson, as I have yet to hear/read any sense or logic from his lips. I am so glad to be living in France now, but I am also worried for my daughter, although I know that she is very sensible.
