It’s the first time I’ve found myself working full time during a vacation. I should be over the worst of it in about three days. I’m grading exams and working out end of term grades all by email. I can’t find a couple of exams and I don’t know if I accidentally erased them or if the students didn’t send them in. I’m getting lots of emails from students thanking me for my classes. It’s very heartening and compensates for being a slave to the computer.
Nowadays when I hear people.say they’re not good with computers, I remember that I was saying that a few months ago. Now I feel that’s not me any more, even though I’ve only made a small amount of headway. The big thing is that I’m no longer intimidated and unwilling to try. I never thought I would be able to find positive aspects to online teaching. I still think it’s a poor substitute for face to face teaching but it’s been an adventure I’m beginning to enjoy. I’ve been asked to work part-time at my school after retiring. It will be good to make a gentle transition to retirement so it looks like I may still be working beyond seventy. I prefer to keep active and also to have that extra bit of financial security.
