Choices & Balance

Saturday, August 29, 2020

Good article in today's New York Times about tradeoffs and risk in the times of COVID. Everyday I think about what I'm going to do, how I'm going to do it and how I'm going to manage the risk. Sure, I wear a mask when out in public and in NY you really can't go anywhere without one! And I stay 6 ft away from folks, don't eat inside a restaurant. Think about where I"ve been and decide that's enough for today. We're not going to be perfect and as this article points out every bit that we do helps.

These sentences from the article sum it up:
"Too many view protective measures as all or nothing: Either we do everything, or we might as well do none. That’s wrong. Instead, we need to see that all our behavior adds up."

Reminds me of our heathy living journey. We make choices every day. What to eat & drink, how/when we're going to exercise, sleep, meditate. The mistake I made for years was to think I had to get it all right every day. and that all of nothing mentality was not sustainable. When it finally dawned on me that getting the balance right most of the time was not only good enough it was right for me. And more important, this was a way that would work for the rest of my life.

When COVID hit my exercise routine was knocked for a loop....no gym! We were lucky to be in Florida and the weather was perfect for walking outdoors which we did every day without fail. And we were able to find yoga sessions on YouTube or other places. Made healthy choices on food most of the time and when I didn't? Well that's life.

Our gym is reopening on Tuesday and that presents a whole other choice to make. Will we go back? It depends on how I feel when I do go back. We had our personal training session inside today because of rain and we were the only ones there. Our trainer wiped down everything and we all wore masks. It was a very good workout; much more intense than outside. tired me out and I'm taking it easy for the rest of the day.

Enjoying our deck with its new awning. Checking in on Spark and the news. having a seltzer and leftovers for dinner.

Life is good.

So true this is not an all-or-nothing journey. It took some of us awhile to learn that!
Our gyms may reopen on Sept 9.

What a good article. I, too, think about everything I do and how to handle it. Especially after spending a week in hospital. My doctor has forbidden me to go back to the gym yet. emoticon

It is all about balance and making healthy choices; we can either expose ourselves and others to terrible lifestyle choices as well as COVID at the moment or we can pull up our socks and look after ourselves and those around us. Good health and fitness wins every time in my life.

Yes, making our choices about how to handle situations during this pandemic IS a lot like our choices we have to make for life in general. We have to make the best choices we can with the knowledge we can, realizing that tomorrow we may know even more, so change our tactics!

    Good luck w/the gym.

What used to be small decisions have now become life changing and possible deadly. For me, it boggles my mind when I reflect on just how much the lives of those with whom I share a home and mine have changed since March. Good luck!

    Stay safe. Be well. emoticon

I agree had to change things so much because of covid, had to make many changes, sometimes the balance is off but that is ok, just never give up. Have a relaxed Sunday

Agreed that the choices & balance related to covid-19 are much like our healthy lifestyle journey.

You are right that it is like our healthy lifestyle journey! I am or was like the all or nothing person when I joined spark years ago. I learned soon enough that wasn't the right attitude. As far as Covid-19 goes I try to be really spot on but who knows. About the gum, my sister went back to the gym when it opened. The gym was super excellent about cleaning the equipment but I think they couldn't get into all the nooks and crannies especially the equipment that had fans. She would use the treadmill and the bike, she would also use the fans on the equipment. The last time she was there 3 days later she was showing symptoms of Covid-19. She was scheduled for a test on a Wed. that would have been 5/6 days after the gym. She did test positive. She and her hubby survived and had it much milder than most. (((HUGS)))
