River and Mountain hikes

Monday, October 26, 2020

I hiked with my friend Hanne along the McKenzie River. This hike is within 10 miles of one of the major fires that occurred in September. It is a beautiful area, and I am so glad that it escaped the destruction. The rain has mostly extinguished the large fires in our area of Oregon. But many people lost their homes and there was a huge amount of damage.

On the drive in, the vine maples were a bright red/orange.

The river trail winds through lush green rain forest; it is only about 55 miles from where I live in the high desert. But what a contrast between the two environments!

My friend Hanne is by one of the many old growth cedar trees.

I loved the mossy boulders

And the views of the river

We saw a very strange dried mushroom, shaped like a flower

And there were glimpses of fall colors in the forest, among the lava formations

Our destination was the Blue Pool, where the McKenzie river emerges after traveling underground.
