Duck pond installed. 250 gallons of duck heaven.



Even if the pond was 10x bigger, they would only use this much space.
They are so fun to watch. They dive underwater and disappear, popping up somewhere you least expect them. They grab each others feet as play.

Watching ducks goes well with morning coffee.

Still digging...

Got the hole dug, but I need to install drainage for water changes.



My weight is still fluctuating, but the waist is still shrinking.
Can't trust the scale when so close to weight goal.

Edging down to 54.0% Waist to Height Ratio.

I'm in this for the long haul, meaning...no rest for the weary.

Today is pond day.

Gonna dig a big hole to drop in a 6 foot wide, 18 inch deep, duck pond for the clowns. They so big now, the kiddie pool just ain't cutting it for them.

Looks like I will shovel about 1/2 ton of dirt.
I will see how many calories I will burn on this project.
I bet it will burn at least 2000 calories.

Back on the Spark wagon. Took a couple days off, running errands.
Weight still fluctuating but tape remains the same.

Speed or Endurance?

I occasionally come across articles that delve into the pros and cons of running for speed or endurance. My conclusion is neither is best.

They both have their merits.
For me, too much speed results in injury.
Yet, endurance alone doesn't help when I need a burst of speed, like trying to get out of the way. So, my goals include both.

I find it amazing that these articles seem to exclude the various muscles required for both. So, again, I strive for both. I try my best to include strength training in my leg muscles, like slow walking with a loaded backpack while going uphill. A loaded backpack while jogging, faster for sure.

Squats help in both endurance and speed.

Cardio and strength training.
They seem to go hand in hand.

Like early morning with a cup of coffee.

What do you think would happen if you left some straw bedding outside the duck compound? Perhaps the rabbit would just take it and leave them alone? Or perhaps the crisis is over now? Or perhaps it's good for ducks to get to know their neighbours?

Well done on that early run. The weather here isn't as dramatic as yours, but it certainly swings from hot to cold quite a bit at the moment.

Duck Update: Trouble in Paradise

We noticed the ducks have been staying in the quack shack for the last couple of days. This is out of the ordinary.

Close observation reveals we have an intruder. A rouge wild rabbit has been sneaking in and stealing straw from their bedding. Well, this is troubling to them, I recon.

I caught the invader on camera and you can see, the ducks don't like this. I can only conclude that they are guarding the entrance as a group. Safety in numbers I suppose.



I watched the rabbit as it ran off with a mouthful of straw for it's own use. Bedding for baby bunnies I suppose.

Oh well. It could be worse.

Ran 2 miles today for 200 calories.

Coffee tomorrow.

Well done, Harry!

I've never been a treadmill runner (as I don't have one basically!) - but I've run a little bit on the treadmill at the sports centre. The foot-fall on a treadmill feels a lot different, you're less in control because you have to pick up your foot or fall over! In the real world you can vary your direction and pace much more easily. I also like the different surfaces - tarmac, grass, pebbles, gravel, mud - dodging rocks and drain-covers etc.

Your run circuit looks very convenient - excellent job!

Gill, yes, while on the treadmill.

So, today I did an experiment.

Early this morning I did 2 miles at a pace of 15:00 min/mile on the treadmill.
That is with the treadmill set at a 5% hill climb. 200 calories burned.

Later in the day, I ran a 2.74 mile trail outdoors, 13:35 min/mile average pace, for a time of 37:19. 221 calories burned. I carried a 5 pound hydration pack that included 2.0 L of water that I sipped while jogging. I really really had to fight hard to keep from breaking into a full stride run.

Both runs were in Zone 3.

Though the treadmill was a slower pace, the hill climb is good for strength training.
The trail was mostly level, and was a struggle to keep a slow pace with 5 pounds of water.

Anyway, the trail-run seemed easier even though it was slightly longer.
The trail-run at a faster pace felt just like the treadmill hill-run at a slower pace.

Anyway, to keep myself in check to reduce injury, I'm going to limit my trail-runs to a pace of about 12:00 min/mile.

It felt great. This is helping me build a lot of endurance.

However, I can feel more pain in various muscles in my midsection because the trail-run involves more muscle activity than using the treadmill. I think trail-runs are a better workout overall. Now that the weather is nicer, I'll be doing more trail-runs.

Here's my trail run.


Here's the other weird thing. When I got home, I weighed myself. I had lost over 3 pounds. This is why I don't trust the scale when so close to reaching my final goals. My weight can swing by as much as 5 pounds a day from water gain/loss. Mr. Tape keeps me from going crazy. The SPARE TIRE is slowly shrinking.

For me, endurance beats speed.

Finding my sweet spots.

It's all good.

With the exact speed running - are you using your treadmill?

Thanks for sharing news on the farm - it's lovely to read.

What do your cats make of the ducks? Not food-on-legs I hope. I guess the ducks are too big for the cats, but they also don't fly very easily, so.......... hmm, the cats might find them amusing?

Completed a 3 mile run this afternoon.
All in Zone 3 with an occasional overlap into Zone 4.
Still keeping my speed to an exact 4 MPH.

Mr. Tape says I've shrunk my love handles by about 1/4 inch, so I updated my ticker to reflect the change.

Duck update: Them clowns are ever so curious. I discovered that if you dig into the ground with your fingers, or with a small stick, they come running to investigate. Something about digging into the ground gets their undivided attention. When this happens, they get real close so that you can pet them. I'm going to do this daily as they are so amusing to be with.

Bee update: More flowers have bloomed and the bees are going bonkers collecting pollen. They are trying to make and store enough honey to get through the winter. Here is a Bumble Bee I photographed this afternoon.



Bed time. I will be dreaming about tomorrows coffee.

I know - I feel the same - it's a life-long journey.

I also find that when I do yoga and stretches now that I've got a smaller range of flexibility - I wish I'd worked on that more diligently all my life too! Still - we're alive and kicking, so let's just keep moving forwards!

Making progress.

Completed a 2.5 mile run at 4 MPH.
The whole distance was completed with a heart rate below 120 bpm.

This tells me that my heart and respiratory system has gotten stronger.
My sleeping heart rate is now around 43 bpm.

For me, this is a huge success, especially at my age.
And no injuries!

Wish I had figured this out years ago.

The journey never ends.

I've been taking Vitamin D since the beginning of the pandemic. Only the 'official' UK amount of 1000 iu (25 micrograms). The 2000 iu is a good amount for immunity.

Daily dosages are set very low for safety reasons (as I'm sure you know). The information source I follow suggests that the lack of Vitamin D is a reason why people with darker skins are adversely affected by Covid-19.

Stumbled on this Interesting article. I looked at the label on my supply of vitamin D and a single tablet only supplies 2000IU (250% daily dosage?) Makes no sense to me.

I'm going to make the extra effort to get my D supply from the sun during the winter months to keep my immune system in check.

Hi Gill,

My fitness tracker sets a goal of so many calories per day based on height/weight. Somewhere around 500 calories to burn. If I achieve that goal, it is 100% complete. Anything above that is icing on the cake. Some days I get so busy, I can easily burn 200% of the goal, or twice the target.

As for the bees, I won't be able to harvest any honey until the 3rd year.
1st year is to establish the hive.
2nd Year is to build up the bee population
3rd year is when there is sufficient overflow of honey to harvest.

The bees need enough honey to feed on through the winter. They generate heat by eating their honey. They are very good at regulating temperature and humidity, but without food, they will perish. They do not hibernate.

This morning I ran for 3 miles. By 8am, I was at 65% of my goal.
Weight still dropping. Fruit smoothies for breakfast and lunch are a great low calorie sugar free treat.

And of course...coffee.

Tended to my bees this morning. I opened up the top of the hive a bit to allow some extra ventilation.

Two wasps tried to gain entrance and they got the business end from my bees.



This wasp was brought down with one bee.



After that, I did my 2 mile run for 200 calories.
Another successful day of activity.

Tomorrow's goal: Repeat my 2 mile run.
Weight still trending down.

The journey continues.

Back from travel.

Yep, them ducks is huge now. They are grubbing around the yard looking for tender greens to eat. They are good at eating young weeds.

It is a fact that you can easily herd a flock of ducks, but not cats.

Weight trending downward. Staying on track.

How?

1. Avoiding the sugar, added sugar, sweeteners, juices, and artificial sweeteners.
2. Drinking only coffee, tea, water, and milk from grass fed cows.
3. Journaling and writing down my daily goals.
4. Now walking/jogging 2 miles a day for 200 calories burned before 8 AM.
5. Avoiding processed foods.
6. Snacking on fruits and veggies.
7. No email or social media until after dinner.
8. Getting outside to improve my immune system (Vitamin D).
9. Gardening and Landscaping.
10. Sticking to my Paleo diet.
11. Regular strength training.
12. Avoiding ALL sodas.
13. Going to bed early.

That's it. So easy and great habits.

Looking forward to tomorrow's coffee.

I made some nice 'jam' yesterday using frozen berries, lemon juice, a little bit of xylitol and chia seeds - it's nice. Do you ever use xylitol? I am guessing perhaps not.

Getting warmer.

I'm changing my schedule to get up earlier to do my cardio to take advantage of the cooler air, and then going to bed earlier.

I'm definitely getting more calories burned before lunch. All the landscaping projects are getting done as planned in my Bullet Journal. I'm avoiding the life sucking computer activities until later in the evening.

The ducks are doing fine and their colors are really starting to pop.



It's been five years since joining SPARKPeople and I think I will reflect on that a bit and write about it in my blog.

Another very productive day.
My activity tracker says I hit over 100% again.

Updating my BuJo daily with my written goals. Handwriting my top 3 tasks each day is driving me to get them done.

Having moved my email and social media to late in the evening was the best thing I did for myself. I am recapturing more time for the things that are more important to me.

Feeling better about myself.
Getting things done.
Staying on track.
Avoiding sugar.

Tomorrow is a new day.

Wow...finished chapter 2.
Big eye-opener.

The average adult spends 145 minutes a day reading email!
It's a continuous loop of wasteful activity and I'm guilty of it.

Social media is the other big time waster.

Okay, so the advice is to move the email and social activity to the end of they day.
I did that and guess what happened?

I got stuff done! Most productive day since I can't remember when.
Checking off TODO tasks like no tomorrow.

Three big words in chapter 2 are:

1. Clarity - What are my expectations?
2. Focus - Multitasking does not work.
3. Concentration - A skill/habit, concentrated mind activity. When at work, WORK!

To sum everything up, I was very focused and productive today. Moving email and social media to the end of the day, breaks the loop of wasteful activity, and frees me up to do the important tasks that have consequences if not completed. So simple. The tasks that have consequences must be completed first.

Chapter 3 starts with this quote:

Thought is the original source of all wealth, all success, all material gain, all great discoveries and inventions, and all achievement. -Claude M. Bristol

Eating correctly involves clear thought.
It is a conscious decision to eat the right foods.
Lack of thought has consequences.

Making improvements with my time.

Had my coffee.

I bought some broccoli the other day and pulled it from the fridge.
It looked really sad all wilted an all.

I decided to try and perk it up by placing it in a bowl of water and put it back in the fridge. Low and behold, it sprung back into life. So crunchy and fun to eat. Why didn't I think of this decades ago?

Okay, back to my book. Reviewing the first chapter.
The top three percenters are not the smartest people. Because they are driven by WRITTEN goals, they succeed. They win because they never give up. Every day they hammer on little tasks that lead to their ultimate goal.

They all had something in common. They REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted something and never lost sight of it. THEY NEVER GAVE UP.

So, I am DOING the same thing. My daily task is to eat those foods that do not waste my time. My BUJO is just full of reminders of what I REALLY REALLY REALLY want, and that is to see my abs. The daily task is to keep hammering away on eating those foods that do not hurt me.

I'm reminding myself that added sugar is addictive, a poison, and destroys teeth.

So far so good. Gonna reread the first chapter before moving on.

Gonna stop wasting my time.

Gil, the bees are amazing. I watched them yesterday and as long as you move slowly, they don't mind the extra company. They was flying back to the hive with loads of pollen on their legs.

The book I'm reading is called, MASTER YOUR TIME MASTER YOUR LIFE, by Brian Tracy. Wish I had found a book like this years ago.

So far, in a nutshell, people need to set goals and WRITE THEM DOWN.

You have heard of the one percenters who are successful, well, according to this author, it's more like three percenters who bubble to the top. All because they set goals that are written down. Plans are useless without the action.

The action becomes daily tasks, daily goals, WRITTEN DOWN and executed daily. This is one of the reasons I went back to a BUJO.

The food I eat is a daily goal. There are the good foods and the not so good foods.

I have set my daily goals:

1. Eat the good Foods
2. Avoid the not so good foods.

This requires thinking.
This requires Intellect.
This requires a conscious decision.

To save my time and energy, I must make the right choice. If I make the wrong choice, I will have wasted-my-time. See the logic in this?

Cause and effect are at play here.

Thus, the daily grind to make the right choices and be rewarded in saving time and reach the goal to remain healthy and happy.

Finally, made it home.

Picked up my bees and got them hived.



They arrived in a box called a NUC (Nucleus of bees). It's a mini hive with about 2000 bees and one queen. To hive them, you pull the racks and transfer the bees to the actual hive. The queen is marked with a blue dot on her back and is easy to spot. After hiving, I gave them sugar water as a treat. They loved it.

The queen is introduced to the hive inside a cage. She is trapped inside until the bees chew away a candy barricade. Since the queen is new to the workers, it gives them time to get use to her scent. After the candy is chewed away, they have gotten to know here and accept her as the new queen. This is the empty chamber.



Here is the hive with the feeder.



When the temperature dropped below 50F, they flew back into the hive to keep warm. Exciting day today.

Started two new books on time management. I expect to learn some new tips so that I may get better at utilizing my time. Important to me as I see time management as a key to improving my weight management habits. I believe they are all interrelated.

Time marches on, in step with my journey.

Still at it.

Duck update:

They are getting bigger. Adult feathers coming in. They are so big now we need a larger pool for them to swim in.



They are naturally curious birds and move as a herd. All I need to do is splash the water with my hands and they come running from their coop to investigate. They greedily feed from my hands and love to be sprayed with the garden hose.

It is a fact that a duck will sell it's soul for a grub (fly larvae) and a tub of water.
I would sell my soul for a chocolate bar and a cup of coffee.

Sadly, we lost one bird to a chronic illness, so now we are down to 11.

My next project is to set up a self cleaning pool for them to swim in.

Still at it, going strong.

Been working hard and fast to finish duck coop. Finally finished it by adding UV-treated poly-plastic to the roof to keep water out. All done with recycled wood, straightened nails, screws, and a bit of sweat. We now keep the ducks inside it at night and the ducks seem to like it. They are getting more adult feathers and more color. Very interesting to watch the changes.

Next step is to put up a protective fence to keep out the unwated raccoons and foxes.

All the extra work activity has melted away a couple of pounds, so that is good.

Still on track.
Avoiding sugar.
Watching portion size.
And drinking the coffee.

P.S. The ducks are so much fun.
They do nibble on the fingers but it's not harmful. I actually enjoy it. No sharp teeth or super pointy beak. Their beaks are for rummaging through wet grass, weeds, and underwater plants for grubs and snails.

Oh, the ducklings are SO cute now! Do they try to bite you at all? Or do they think you are their Grown Up Duck?

I'm sorry you have rotten weather - we've got lovely weather, but, of course, we can't go out and enjoy it fully. I've enjoyed looking at fluffy white clouds in the blue sky from my window, and I follow the sun from the front to the back during the day, so I can at least have some sunshine coming in through the windows.

Completed a 4 mile walk in 60 minutes.
Avoided added sugar.
Drank gallons of coffee and water.
Stayed in my calorie range.

Also gave the youngsters a bath.
I put 6 of the little buggers into a box and carried them to our bathtub filled with water. Cleaned the tub and did the next 6. So much fun.



When dried off, they are so puffy with their little feathers. The adult feathers are starting to come in and are so cool looking.

In a couple more weeks, it may be warm enough to take them outside.

No names for the little varmints.
However, it was suggested to write numbers on their beaks.

Big disaster this morning. Two of them escaped. I was woken by shrieking & squealing because 2 of them jumped out of the tub. Then there was even more squealing as I picked them up to return them to their tub. Then all of them started shrieking as I added new straw bedding. Eventually, they all calmed down in the fresh straw. You'd think the world was coming to an end.

ON3DERLAND, Coffee is the water of life.

No exercise today. Went into town to do some shopping.
Picked up some straw for the ducks. Discovered that straw is better at absorbing moisture and thus a superior bedding. Less expensive than wood chips.

Decided to give the ducks a bath. It's so funny to watch.

When you put a single duck in a tub of water by itself, it squeals like a stuck pig. So insecure. But, if you put two or more ducks in the same tub, that is okay. Everything is fine and they get right to it, diving under water and splashing around, getting good and wet. The only thing missing is a bar of soap. My conclusion is ducks can't count. One duck by itself is a world disaster. Two or more, everything okay. More than two is a crowd. Before going to bed, I threw in some fresh straw, and the bedding is much drier and less stinky duck smell.

Tomorrow, I build a larger feeder.

It's all good.

Feeling great.
Did a short cardio walk for 30 minutes.
Working on the duck house and my beehive today.

I located a source of straw for the duck bedding.
Researching beehive technology.

Bees are amazing. They can survive cold temperature down to -112F. As long as the humidity is low and they have food, they make their own heat by beating their wings. If a hive fails it's because they run out of food or it's too wet resulting in frostbite.

Nature is amazing.

Strength training completed. Squats, pushups, crunches, and kettleball.

Duck update:

I cut the old chicken coop in half as it was not suitable for 12 ducks. The plan is to take the old wood and use it to expand the duck house three additional feet. The total effect is to squash the coop and make it wider. I have read that it needs to be at least three feet high to accommodate the bedding. As you add bedding, the floor raises up, thus lowering the roof. This way the ducks maintain enough headroom until you replace the bedding next spring. You just keep adding fresh bedding as it gets compacted down.



Also studying what other duck owners do to keep these clowns watered. This is turning into a study on water control and conservation. The birds are messy, but there are things that can be done to keep everything from getting out of hand.

Completed Cardio Medium: 3.3 miles jogging in Zone 3.

Weather is getting better. Digging a post hole to mount my new bee hive. The bees are already out and about. They are attracted to my Caramel Coffee Cake flavored coffee.



It's a sign that they are hungry. I will be planting wild flowers today to give them a helping hand.

Cardio and strength training completed.

Duck update:

They are now 3x their original size after only a week and a half.
They love water. I am convinced that it is impossible to over water a duck. There is just no such thing as too much water for a duck. They are amphibians with wings.

I'm already planning on installing 3 or 4 ponds to keep these birds happy. A clean duck is a happy duck. The water drained from the ponds will fertilize the yard. I will have to rotate them around the house so one side does not get worn and muddied out.

They are very entertaining clowns for sure.

Using the tractor to rip up an old rotted chicken coop and moving a lot of dirt.



I plan to recycle as much wood and fencing as possible as I build a new duck house. It's a lot of work to clear out the old for the new. Once I have the ground leveled out, the flooring is next. 12 ducks need about 48 square feet for nesting.

I burned a lot of calories. Making progress.

Three mile slow jog for 49 minutes.
Completed Cardio Zones 1 thru 3.

Mr. Scale has gone insane. Weight fluctuates by about 5 pounds per day.
This is why I switched to Mr. Tape. Mr. Tape says my belly is shrinking.

Ducks are doing great. I put a pale of water in their tub and they just love it. So comical. They take to the water like...ducks!

12 out of 12 ducklings alive and well.

We have had massive grasshopper attacks over the past 3 years, devastating to young trees and other plants we keep trying to grow. They eat everything right down to the ground.

I have been watching a rancher down the road, who has hundreds of ducks wandering around their property. They eat anything that moves, including young weeds. No pests on that property. They move around like a giant carpet cleaning out bugs and other creepy crawler things.

The plan is to employ a small army of ducks to do the same on our property. We have 14 acres they get to patrol. We are hoping that they can find the young hoppers and make good meals out of them. Right now, our small army is a bit too small and they will be in a tub with heat lamps as they grow up.



It will be interesting to watch them in action.

Also, I now have 13 bird houses installed around the house and many new tenants. They will also help knock down the harmful insects as they feed their young. Spring is here. The next task is to setup the new beehive. That will be another story to tell.

As for myself. I'm slowly improving my exercise habits. I'm exploring the Fitspark exercises (not the same as Sparkfit or SPARKPeople) included with my heart rate monitor. Adding more stretching and strength training to my daily routine.

It's all good. Just like coffee.

12:10 in the early AM. Can't sleep, so I will update my journal.

Looking into percentage body fat has opened a can of worms. I don't like what I'm reading. There are a lot of calculations that require a lot of work. Then there are the never ending questions about accuracy. This has got me to thinking, what am I really after? I'm at that point where the scale is no longer trusted while building muscle. When I step back and review all the information I have read or learned over the past few months, I come to the conclusion that there is no easy answer as to what my ideal weight is for my age and fitness goals.

What do I really want?

I want to remain healthy.
I want to see my abs without being skinny AND regardless of weight.
I want a simple metric to help me track progress as I work toward my goal of seeing my abs. Weight is no longer a good metric. The tape is good, but what should be the measurement goal?

Answer: UNKNOWN.

But, this evening, I think I found an answer (for me). I accidentally found this paper that may help put me at ease.

For me, a published healthy range is 43% to 46%.
My current result is about 57.1%

This is my WHtR (Waist to Height Ratio). BINGO!

A simple metric to track. The thinner my waist, the better my chances at maintaining health.
The articles I read caution readers that more studies need to back this calculation, but I see no harm in testing it. I can stop when I see my abs. Seeing the abs is the goal. When I see the abs, the WHtR value will be my gold standard as it relates to my efforts to build healthy muscle.

However, there is no ticker for this metric. I may request SPARKPeople to create one, but for now, the percentage body fat ticker is close enough.

I don't have a desired number.
I don't even know what my number is.
Gonna find out.

Also gonna change the title of this journal.
I'm over sugar.
The new enemy is belly fat.
The proverbial spare tire.
The dreaded love handles.

It's time to steer this ship in a new direction.
I can do that cause I'm the skipper.

The journey may never end, but I can set a new course.

I'm already sugar free. I want to be free of my spare tire.

I see that there is a percentage body fat ticker. I turned it on just to see what it looks like. I entered 30% as a starting point until I learn what I am, and it's a monthly update. Mr. Scale is now unemployed.

I got my fat measured with calipers when I joined the gym, and was only a little bit over the desired number.

My journey continues with a new spin.

Fat calipers.



Mr. Scale is not to be trusted and for many reasons.
For one, I'm still adding muscle. A lot of it, and it's needed.
I'm still eating well, but I want to monitor my body fat as it converts to muscle.
This will get real interesting. I ordered one as I was suprised at how inexpensive they are. I'm also reading other articles about what is wrong with BMI and height/weight charts. Like here...

I like this advice...

I'll continue with 72 hours or more.

Still pumping iron...oh joy.
Weight slowly edging upward. I'm not discouraged. This may be normal.
Remaining calm...
...and drinking coffee.

Reading up on how to build MORE muscle.
Plenty of good and bad info on the Internet.
The trick is to weed out the bad stuff.
Should I have 24, 48, or 72 hours of rest between workouts?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Zero activity.

No news.

No counting calories.

You are so right.

I will briefly mention that there was a run on our local stores for food and toilet paper. The food that was cleared out was all the high sugar foods in the center isles. The organic foods were untouched, in the outer isles.

I stopped eating the low quality added sugar foods a long time ago, so the run on food did not affect me at all. There was plenty of fresh fruit and veggies, dairy, and many other healthy products. The hoarders got all the poor nutrition foods.

Just something to think about.

Completed strength training today.

Weight still fluctuating wildly.

The good news is Mr. Tape reports no inflation around the waist.
Mr. Scale not sure of anything.

One thing for sure is I'm building healthy muscle mass.

Giving it more time. It's all part of the journey.
