That's good news about the sugar. In the UK they're asking (not sure if it's law yet) food manufacturers to reduce sugar, and take-away meals have to be reduced in size too. It's good news I think. At work I support people to cook - and they sometimes give me filthy looks when I get the digital scales out and insist that they weigh out their portion sizes!

Cardio and strength training completed.

Just for fun, I'm on week 3 of the 100 push ups training program
hundredpushups.com/index.html

and I'm also in week 1 of doing the 20 pull ups challenge.
twentypullups.com/the-twenty-pull-ups-chal

There are plenty of these type challenges on the internet and there was no particular reason I chose the above two.

I just enter the daily goals in my BuJo and I get to cross them off as I complete each one. By writing them down, I make sure they get crossed off as I complete them. It's working.

So far, so good.

Good News!

Mr. Tape says time for an update.
I have lost another half inch off the spare tire!
Ticker now updated.

I have entered into the 46% to 53% Healthy, Normal Weight Range.
It looks like the extra strength training is working.
Combined with a regular cardio exercise AND cutting out all the sugar has paid off. I'm very happy about this. It is a slow process, but it is working.

However, the journey does not end.

I now have to maintain this. I'm at the upper end of the range, so now my goal is to reach the middle of the range.

So, I know all this hard work is paying off.

Food controls weight.
Exercise builds strength.

Happy day!

Not from my hive.

That is natural comb, the better kind.

Mine looks like this

What I'm reading is that the above frame is for the beekeeper. Easy to harvest honey, Not natural for the bee. Causes genetic problems in the long run and is not good for drone bees.

The natural comb is designed by the bee for the bee. Produces more drones, better genetics.

I'm not in this for the honey, so I'm learning that I would prefer to go organic. I can still harvest honey, but at a slower natural rate.

I really enjoyed that video. The Lizard is the easterly tip of Mounts Bay. I live in the middle of the bay, in Penzance.

Is that a picture of comb from your hives?

Strength training completed today.

Found this really nice video on bees. I think these folks are on to something.

beekindhives.uk/2018/09/19/free-bee/

The more I learn about bee keeping, the more I don't like commercial bee keeping. It's not good for the bee. I'm now doing new research on hives. I want something that is good for the bee. Not for the bee keeper. Organic bee keeping is calling me.

Doing my best to behave.

Cardio today.

Duck update: We have been adopted by a new duck. It's moulting now and looks pretty bad, but I suspect it will look better now that we are feeding it. It belongs to a neighbour who is not taking care of it. The duck spotted our ducks having fun in the pond, so now it has moved in. Why do people get pets and not take care of them?

We think it's a Black Swedish Duck.

Today's quote...

REFUSE TO FAIL.

Strength training completed.
Updating BuJo.

Playing with different pens. I love this stuff. I love quill pens too, but they are messy. The fountain pen that I found is a fine script calligraphy pen. It adds a bit of flare to the line quality. None of my ink cartridges work with it, but I found I can use a piece of erasure and drop it into the barrel to take up the gap. I can now use my other cartridges with it. AWESOME!

Making coffee as I plan my day.

Completed strength training yesterday. Upped the weights.
Completed cardio this morning.

Mr Tape says I'm still holding steady.

Weight still remains stubborn, but I'm liking what I see in the mirror.

More toned and less fat.
Muscle still growing, slowly replacing the fat.

I may go shopping today to find a mini fountain pen that can be strapped to my BOJO.

Coffee time.

UPDATE: Went to art store and found a new journal. The new one is not a standard size. It is 6 x 8 inches and is designed for artists. The dot spacing is 4 mm x 4mm and is perfect for my small writing style, plus it's not a hard cover and is more flexible. The old A5 journal has 5mm x 5mm dot spacing and is just too big for me. The other nice thing about the artist journal is that it is on acid free paper, and costs less...something I really appreciate.

I also picked up a nice disposable fountain pen that I have been meaning to try out. It may be a disposable pen, but I plan to drill a hole into it and refill it when it dries up.

I don't think I'd manage with A6 as my writing is quite 'loose'

I use the monthly list (not sure how helpful that is really as it's another thing that needs to be updated regularly.

I use my phone calendar for all events that are time-specific. Then a paper diary for messy jottings of date and time and as a kind of back-up for the phone calendar. I synchronise phone and diary regularly.

I have two ribbons in my BUJO - one used for the daily page, and one wherever I want it - usually on the monthly page or budget page.

I don't have to use my BUJO for work things. But I do have pages for all kinds of things - packing lists for my holiday, project notes, notes from lectures etc.

The main benefit of the BUJO for me has been getting the TODO list sorted out - carrying things over from one day to the next happens less frequently, and I'm more likely to work through the things on my list so that I don't have to carry them over. I like that it's a totally flexible system that you can use how you need.

I had the A6 pocket size, but I'm finding it's just too restrictive.
I moved to the A5 and I keep it at my computer desk. It's better for drawings for sure.

Sticky tab is to quickly find the Daily Log.

My current tools for journaling are:

BuJo for tracking, managing, and journaling everything within 6 months.
ColorNote for daily todo while mobile.
Google Calendar for long range annual/seasonal repeating events and tasks.

If I go shopping, I load up ColorNote with my shopping list and any tasks that need to be done while in town. If I have an idea or some task I need to remember, I make note of it and when I get home, I update BuJo.

When I update BuJo, I check the Google calendar and update my future log accordingly. BuJo is always updated up/down, back/forth as needed. It's becoming a very handy time saving system. A nice feature of Google Calendar is that I can have multiple calendars that can be toggled OFF/ON as needed. I can just view my exercise calendar and filter out the other events to make the updates less cluttered.

I carry the BuJo as needed, otherwise it stays at the desk. For local meetings and field trips, I bring BoJo to take notes, make drawings, etc.

BoJo seems to be the most efficient and compact system for journaling and time management that I have found. Writing down my thoughts and goals helps me reach my goals and journal my way to success. A good fountain pen makes it more fun.

oh, she's so cute! and so's that bandage! I'm very happy to hear she's on the mend - antibiotics and epsom salt baths

The larger BUJO sounds right for an artist - what size is it? A4? My BUJO is pretty standard A5 I guess. I don't carry mine around - it stays at home. I still haven't mastered the art of using the BUJO for everything - I use the 'notes' facility on my phone to capture ideas - written and photos - then don't transfer them to my BUJO. I should really - the phone is just virtual post-it-notes. Now that I've told you that, I'll do something about it!

Duck update:

It's been about a week with an injured foot.
I'm getting better at dressing a webbed foot wound.
Nothing more fun than trying to hold a duck and dress a duck's foot.
They don't like that one bit.
But, this one is quite tame and she knows we are helping her.

This morning, she jumped out of her hospital nesting box and refused to stay in. She kept standing next to the door, so I let her out to join the rest of the flock. She is running around and putting her full weight back on her foot, so I'm happy to see she is recovering. I figure another week of epsom salt baths and antibiotics and she will be back to 100%.

Today, I'm trying out a larger size BUJO and I'm liking it. Though less portable, it allows more writing and drawing space. More agreeable with my fountain pens as well.

Haven't run for about a week as I need a break, so I am lifting more weights and general strength training.

Coffee time!

P.S. Just discovered this nice quote...

"If the journey is the destination, then we must become better travelers."

For me then, a journey without the journal, is like the honey without the bee.

I've added honey to my favorites.
Shoulda done that a long time ago.
Honey does appear in Spark nutrition tracker and show vitamins.

Logging the calories in the nutrition tracker and sticking to it requires fortitude and determination. Mr. Scale reports a slight trend but I'm gonna wait a couple of weeks to see how it goes.

Never give up.

My bees have filled the honey super above their brooding box. They should have enough for the winter. I've added a second honey super in case they keep adding to the stores. They continue to bring in pollen to make honey and store food for the young. When the pollen stops flowing in, I'll make sugar water for them as they prepare for winter. After that, I'll wrap the hive with plastic to help them survive the winter winds.

I set a new goal of 1500 calories.
I have it in my journal to STICK WITH IT.
I've come this far. I need to keep pushing.

Yes, pure raw unprocessed honey seems to be a great sweetener.

Too bad the food store sells the watered down version, but its great that you can get it locally. My local food store is now offering more and more organic whole foods including raw honey.

The journey and battle continues.

Never give up.

Thank you for leaving a comment on my journal. I tend to get a little wordy there because it's where I think things out. Most people never make it to the journals so it's a much more honest place for me.

I've been using the Spark Nutrition Tracker so long that it's habit. I am doing intermittent fasting and one meal a day. Most people doing that don't track because it's hard to go over on calories. I like to track so I can know exactly where I am on calories and other categories like fiber, carbs, potassium, etc. I like numbers. :)

I read below where you and Gill were talking about the healthy benefits of honey. A few years ago my sister shared with me that using local honey helps the immune system. I am fortunate to have someone in my neighborhood who sells honey.

I hear you. I loath tracking calories.

Now that I'm 65yrs old, I find that I need less food.
emoticon
Also that my body seems stubbornly determined to stick at 117 lbs. This is a fine weight according to the health charts, but I know how much unnecessary blubber I have - and I don't want it! But eating any less is hard - especially because the body gets used to it eventually (unless actually starving!)

Completed cardio for the day.
Had my coffee.
Completed some yard work.

I decided to look in the mirror and talk to myself, again, about my goals and why it's taking so long. Then, I had another long talk with Mr Fitness Monitor.

According to Mr. Fitness Monitor, 60% of my energy deficit needs to come from reducing eating, and the remaining 40% comes from increasing daily activity.

For me, that means eating 300 fewer calories and burning 200 more calories each day to reach my goal. It boils down to counting my calories. Something I absolutely hate to do. But, Mr. Fitness Monitor is correct.

So I'm back to counting each and every calorie using my really cool SPARKPeople nutrition tracker. The one tool I loath the most.

To reach my goal faster, I need to face the facts.
Mr. Tape is confirming that I'm not gaining nor am I losing.
Mr. Scale doesn't seem to care about anything.

Tomorrow is a new day.

emoticon It looks like a tape measure to me.

emoticon This one is about chucking the scale out the window. That's a lot of fun.

emoticon This one looks like the bonus spinner. I missed getting 500 points by just one division line yesterday. Bummer.

On the subject of the scale. I only trust it if the change is five pounds or more. Ten is even better. When I drink or lose so much water, it swings as much as 3 to 5 pounds. So what good is the scale unless you see a trend. The average weight over time is the trend and so that is more useful, not the daily swing. It can be frustrating.

The scale does not know how much food or water you consume or lose.
It can't tell the difference between fat loss and muscle gain. Fat loss and muscle gain tend to cancel each other out until one wins over the other.

As I said before, Mr. Tape does not lie.
As a person gets closer to their desired weight goal, only the tape helps you maintain sanity.

So far, my sanity is kept in check using the tape measure. I'm within 5 pounds of goal, still losing, but at a very frustrating slow rate. I'm sure I can cut my calories, but I think I'm better off eating like I am and just putting in a bit more exercise. Creeping up on my goal.

Oh joy, a cold front moving in and and we might get snow!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's another good article about sugar.
Not all sugars are created equal.

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_art
icles.asp?id=2466

What the article fails to mention is that sugar from fruit travels further down the digestive system and feeds the good bacteria in your intestines, essential for a normal healthy body to absorb nutrients.

Artificial sugars destroy the good bacteria.

Just something to think about while I drink my morning coffee.

You are reaping the rewards - well done!

In baking, honey won't bake hard/crisp like a cane sugar - that's another reason. It stays soft.

Inspired by you, I'm enjoying keeping a jar of local honey in the cupboard for occasional use. It IS more expensive than the stuff in the supermarket, but I know it's BETTER too! And I'm worth it!

Honey is an excellent sweetener.

I now make this tea with honey.
steptohealth.com/ginger-lemon-honey-tea-bo
ost-immune-system/

The properties of honey are well documented.

Why is it not used to sweeten everything? That's easy to answer. It costs more!
If food companies had to choose between refined sugar and honey, the choice is simple. Food companies can boost their profits by cheapening food with sugar. Their profits increase while our health decreases.

Added processed refined sugar has zero nutritional value.
Honey has vitamins.

For me, I choose pure raw honey in *VERY SMALL* amounts.

More yard work.

Got stung again by my bees. Seems they are in a bad mood this time of year as the pollen and nectar becomes harder to find.

Drinking more water thanks to the heat.

Watching more lectures by Dr. Lustig.
Seems that metabolic syndrome does not help those people infected with COVID-19. Another good reason to cut out the sugar.

Time for coffee.

Over a couple of years, I've managed to establish the longer overnight 'fasting' time of 13-14 hours. It was hard at first to give up my much-loved evening meal. Now I have my meal at lunch time and a much lighter, smaller meal in the early evening - usually before 6pm.

Fasting for a whole day has not appealed to me though................ but I have done juice fasts in the past and they were OK.

Good news.

Graduated from 15 pound kettle ball to 35 pound kettle ball.
It's just soooooooooooo much fun to swing that thing around.

Also, weight still up and down a pound, but only a pound.
Mr. Tape says waist still getting less thick.
Getting harder to grab the love handles.

So, I dared to update my ticker.

Yes, the journey can be frustrating. But, all I can do is keep my chin up and KEEP PUSHING!

Completed my long cardio today. 3.5 miles in less than an hour.

Mr. Tape says I'm still on track and that I need to ignore Mr. Scale.
Much of the weight change is just from water gain or loss.

Duck update: Neighbor's ducks are patrolling the outer perimeter of my property. They see my ducks have a pool to play in and are quite jealous. We also have peacocks coming into our yard for food and water. Seems like the neighbors need to take better care of their pets.

Making a salad for dinner.

Stuck on a plateau...tape not moving.

I'm going to try a bit more discipline.
I'm eating healthy and not overdoing it.

I wonder if a daily goal of 0.10 pound per day is doable?
I think it is. I just need to stay focused.

I have added that goal to my journal and I will make a list of those things that will help me achieve it.

I completed a recovery cardio session of 30 minutes for 1.5 miles.

So far, so good. Not gaining.

Good morning SusanYounger!

You is doing great, keep it up.
We didn't get to our starting point over night, so it will take a while to complete our journey.

I completed my longish cardio this morning for about 2.9 miles. A mix of HIIT while hiking.

Sticking to my goals of good eating habits.
Boiled up a bunch of eggs to store in fridge for a quick snack while having my usual cup of coffee.

Drinking extra water cause it's about 100 F outside.
Doing gardening. Feeding the weeds to the ducks as they follow me around. They are such good company.

These will be good memories as time marches on.

Gill, I'm always experimenting with coffee.
Add or subtract water as needed.

I bought coffee today. I try to only buy myself decaff ground coffee (to keep my caffeine down as it can creep up somewhat) - but my local store didn't have any - so I picked up some Hot Java Lava STRONG ground coffee! I'll only use one spoonful in my cafetiere, not my usual two!

I try to eat mostly vegan foods - but honey is something I make an exception for. I don't get through a lot of it, but I do appreciate it, and I do subscribe to the theory that 'local' bees offer us a lot of benefits.

Funnily enough, last night I woke up and had to go and be sick - I've no idea what caused it - and I can't remember the last time I was sick (several years' ago!) - perhaps it was something I ate. But this morning, after sipping water and not fancying my usual coffee, the thing I am fancying is a little bit of honey on a crispbread.

Well, it was never my goal to start apitherapy, but the bee venom is now in my system thanks to the sting. The bee got me on my arm and the pain is gone now and it just itches as it heals.

I looked into the properties of pure bee honey and found it is beneficial for our immune system, however, I have no proof. I just wanted to produce my own pure honey that is not watered down with water, syrup, or refined sugar.

If the bee made it, it must be natural.

That is fascinating! So, are you considering apitherapy now? I never even knew that was a thing. Thanks for the photo of the bees 'bearding' to cool the hive.

I was over at Godolphin House on Friday (National Trust property in Cornwall) where they sell honey from Cornish Black Bees that have been bred in apiaries established there. But I knew I already had a jar of local honey in my cupboard, so couldn't justify buying more at the moment.

Gardening planned for today.

So hot out, the bees come out of the hive to help cool it down. The volunteers come out and cling to the side to allow more air flow. It's called bearding.

Got stung by one of my bees yesterday and I wasn't even close to my hive!
Then a friend sent me this link about how beekeepers may not be affected by the C19 virus!

Maybe you were just a little tired from the longer jog the day before (and whatever else you did on the farm). Some days I have to check my back-pack to see if I've got something extra in there making it heavy - it can feel heavier some days - and the difference must be me!

Getting 'less thick' is good. I need to be 'less thick' around my middle (although my numbers are OK theoretically).

Strength training completed.
For some reason, the kettle ball seemed heavier today.
Maybe I'm getting weaker.

Weight still bouncing all over the place.
But, Mr. Tape says I'm on track.

I'm becoming less thick.

Where would I be without coffee?

5.75 mile jaunt into the summer covid infected abyss.

I keep pushing myself.

Making progress.

Writing down my goals.

My morning workouts seem to be the bestest time of day. Cooler.
Avoiding social media makes me more productive.

The journey continues.

Welcome back! And well done managing your healthy habits whilst on the road and away from home.

Ah, yes, there's nothing quite like coffee (or tea!) in your own home.

Back home.

2 weeks without a decent workout, days on the road.

Finally ran 2 miles to burn 200 calories.
Settling back into the groove. The journey continues.

The good news is I was under my weight when I started travel, so my habits are working. Avoiding the sugar products and processed foods. Snacked on nuts during the windshield time.

Coffee on the road is the worst.

Back to my own coffee. So much better.

It's all good.
