Gill, yes, the BUJO is a blessing to getting organized. I'm still searching for the perfect pen to go with my journal. This is turning into a lot of fun!

A Calorie is not a Calorie

Even Coke admits this in the new to me video by Dr. Robert Lustig, here at 54:45

Link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvgxNDuQ5DI

I have found out for myself the truth. I cannot exercise away added sugar.
The only way to stop the added sugar is to remove it from your diet.

I exercise to build strength and keep my heart healthy.
I have lost weight by losing my sugar addiction.

The choice is ours to make.

Great! I love my BUJO - but I can still be lazy about keeping it up; my budget pages weren't done this month even though I ruled them all up ready. Life is easier when I use my bullet journal! Like you, I consolidated a lot of other notebooks and scrap-pads.

69 days since added sugar. Doing Great.

Playing with my analog journal. I'm really liking this. I have been making the classic mistake of keeping too many notebooks and loose papers. I went through all my art pads, notebooks, and stacks of paper and consolidated it all down into one notebook. Now all my TODO lists are organized into a single system, restoring some sanity.

Still working on shoulder pain. Alternating hot/cold packs and it's helping.

For exercise, I'm going to try some advice from a marathon runner. This runner jogs at an easy pace between races, like at Zone 2. For me, that is around Zone 2-3. It's not uncomfortable and it's still low impact. My shoulder doesn't hurt at this pace and it provides gentle swinging of arms and shoulder movement. As I get better and more used to the pace, I suspect my heart rate will drop down to Zone 2 (for me).

So this morning I went a full hour and burned 457 calories. That was very easy to do. The marathon runner tells me that he can go all day at Zone 2 and is great for developing a good pace. It reduces the chances of stress fractures. When I started I was in Z2 and at the end of my workout, I was in Z3 (at the same pace). All good. Low impact on my feet and shoulder.

No strength training until my shoulder gets better. Still exploring stretches.

Scale says I'm closer to my BMI goal.

Still applying hot/cold packs to my shoulder/arm.

I'm going to work on fine tuning my organizational skills today. I have an old fashon analog day planner I'm going to use and apply the new-to-me Bullet Journal method of tracking notes, goals, and tasks.

No batteries required. emoticon

Gill, thanks for the link. It is spot on. Small changes are the best for sure.

My new habit this morning is grass-fed-butter coffee as mentioned by CGEM61.Yummers!

Made some progress with my shoulder yesterday. I am now alternating between hot and cold packs on the the hurting shoulder. It is helping a lot. Also sticking with a minimal dosage of NSAIDs and Acetaminophen every four hours. The combination is really helping. Less pain today.
emoticon

As for stretching, I am gently experimenting with all sorts of arm movements. Plenty of information on the Internet. The shoulder does not hurt sleeping on either the right or left side.

Proceeding with great caution.

Good luck with that. That quote from The Grind was spot on. Something that helped me was Mini-Habits by Stephen Guise - it's a kind of 'change one thing' system, but making the adjustment very small to begin with. At 2:48 in this video Newton's law is cited!

youtu.be/cTQusWYVtSI

With that in mind. Maybe finding a very gentle shoulder workout will start the ball rolling.

I had an uncomfortable lump behind my right shoulder blade for a LONG time - and could not work it out. I began training myself to lay on the left in bed, instead on my favoured right side. And that was the beginning of sorting it out for me. I wonder, do you favour laying on your left shoulder at night perhaps?

Now that I have stabilized my Yo-Yo-ing weight loss, I need to build a more sane exercise program that is a balance of stretching, cardio and strength training.

My weight is still edging downward and at some point I will be in full maintenance mode.

I have a bit of chronic pain in my left shoulder so I think I will start with that. I have no idea were it came from and it started about two months ago. I just woke up and it was there. I'm going to back off from all strength training until I can figure out what stretching exercises I need to do to help aliviate the pain.

Today's wisdom from a newsletter I receive.

"The Grind...Success brings pressure that can weigh on you, a little more each day, so incrementally that you don’t really notice it. And when you’ve been working nonstop for years on end, it’s easy to forget that other mindsets exist. It’s Newton’s first law: An object in motion will remain in motion with the same speed and direction until it’s affected by an external force."

What this means to me is that it is hard to change. Breaking a habit requires thinking out of the box.

Same with my health. I need to stay focused, but also open to external forces that can help me improve my health.

Breaking the sugar habit was that external force.

Still working on that next smaller pant size.

Gill,

Thanks for the link.

It points to the same problem that sugar addicted humans experience, that being metabolic syndrome, or as the good Doctor Lustig would say, "processed food disease".

I am so much more mindful of what I'm eating these days.

Back from another trip.

All is well and on track.
Not missing the sugar from my diet.

It is a good thing that nuts are available as a healthy snack while on the road.
More and more gas stops are providing packaged salad and fruit as an option over processed foods. Yes, they are more expensive and that is because those foods are not diluted with sugar.

"...Conclusions

In this study, the high level of consumption of total, sugar-sweetened, and artificially sweetened soft drinks was associated with elevated risks of death from all causes. Positive associations were observed between sugar-sweetened soft drinks and digestive disease deaths as well as between artificially sweetened soft drinks and circulatory disease deaths. Further studies are needed to investigate the possible adverse health effects of artificial sweeteners. The results of this study are supportive of ongoing public health campaigns aimed at reducing the consumption of soft drinks."

In my opinion, it's not the drink, it's the SUGAR in the drink.

Remove the sugar and what is left?
- Water & flavoring.

It is far easier to remove the sugar than it is to fight the disease.

Blood test results have come in and I don't mind sharing.

Without getting too far down into details, I have to say I'm very pleased with myself.

For an angry white man my age (65), my kidney function has improved, good cholesterol is way up, triglycerides are down, thyroid hormone is back to normal, and a much improved temperament (less angry).
emoticon
The reason for the improvement in my blood results?

Drum roll please...

...Less sugar.

That is the only thing removed from my diet.

As a result, in my humble opinion, I have lessened my chances of another heart attack, reduced the load on my liver, and improved my outlook on life. I do believe Dr. Lustig is correct. Sugar is the enemy, not fat.

Now, if I can just cure old age disease...

Stay tuned folks. I'm working on it.

Went through my START page and started checking off the daily routine and was directed to this SPARK article:

"Unlock the mystery of food labels"

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/wellness_arti
cles.asp?ID=2415&program=13&program_id
=28

I look for the sugar information and I see it recommends:

"Sugars: The smallest and simplest type of carbohydrate, eating too much "added sugar" makes it difficult to meet nutrient needs and can add unwanted calories. The goal is to consume no more than 10% of your total daily calories from added sugar. On a 2,000-calorie eating plan that would be no more than 50 grams of added sugar daily."

But, the World Health Organization AND American Heart Association recommend LESS sugar! What gives here SPARK? Outdated article or misinformed? Who are we to trust?

I wish we could all get on the same page, dieticians, writers, experts, etc.
I'm certainly no expert, but the safest thing for ME to do is go for less than the minimum, that being NO ADDED SUGAR. Natural sugar supplied by fruits and veggies is all I need.

When in doubt, I go for the lesser amount!

Honey versus Sugar

Poking around on the Internet and looking for the differences between sugar and honey, it doesn't take me long to find the pros and cons of both sweeteners.

There is plenty of information about how honey is made and all the benefits that you can read here:
www.benefits-of-honey.com/index.html

And here:
www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/317728.p
hp

Boiled down to a simple summary...Honey has Nutrients that sugar lacks.
Honey is sweeter and so you can use less of it to get the desired sweetness.
It's made naturally by our friends, the humble honey bee.

I'm convinced. I'll take the nutrients. More honey and less refined sugar for me.

OMG - those are huge!

Yes, I have a similar simple, sugar-free pancake recipe - and make small pancakes (more like drop scones, or Scottish pancakes - both UK names I suspect). Mashed banana in the mixture works well for sweetening and moisturising!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Gill,

You just made me remember why I consumed so much syrup. I believe the cook is to blame. Ever tried to eat an overly dry pancake? So dry that you nearly choke on it cause the pancake powder is trying to escape!

The handiest tool to correct the problem was the quart of syrup and whatever butter was within reach. It wasn't because the pancakes where not sweet enough, it was because they were too dry.

This is one of the reasons I shun pancakes. Another reason is because the serving size are now as big as the plates, roughly the size of a small tire.

Logically it follows, the larger the pancake, the more syrup I needed to choke all this pancake concrete mix down.

Well, the fix for that is to make my own. I have found a "cave-man" approved pancake mix with no added sugar. To sweeten the pancakes, I like to mix blueberries or banana when cooking. More importantly, make the serving size what it should be. When moist enough, no syrup should ever be needed.

I like to add real butter to my pancakes.

Looking into tree sap as a sugar alternative.

Interesting and complicated subject.

Tree sap is not the same as tree syrup.

Tree sap has many beneficial properties such as: "Sap from various maple trees has been shown to provide support for osteoporosis, prevent gastric ulcer formation, lower blood pressure, mitigate alcoholic hangovers, support a healthy immune system, and offer dietary antioxidants."

The darker the sap, the better, and about 2% sugar.

Problem is, where do you find it? Without a trusted source, you may not be getting what you hope for. Many saps or syrups are greatly watered down and laced with sugar. Concensus is you cannot trust the labels. I don't have any maple trees in my yard, so I may steer clear of this product. Certainly, pancake syrups at the supermarket are extremely diluted with sugar, corn syrup, and HFCS.

Some reading:
wildfoodism.com/2014/03/05/nutritional-dif
ferences-between-maple-syrup-grades-wh
ich-is-best/

There are Maple Tree Extracts, but I read that these are more for flavoring than sweetening. Expensive too.

Here is the label from Spring Tree 100% Pure Maple Syrup, Grade A Amber Color, 32 Ounce.

53g of sugar per 1/4 cup. 53/4 = 13.25 teaspoons of sugar. Far exceeding the World Health Organization recommendation of only 6 teaspoons of sugar per day. I used to use at least a cup (or two, or three) of maple syrup on my pancakes.

I don't eat pancakes anymore.

Nope. Staying away from the tree sap and the tree syrups.

Tho...maybe sometime in the way far future, I may try a very small serving.

@SWEETENUFGILL ...."Do you allow any honey or concentrated fruit syrups?"

Gill, Thanks for your question. At this time, the answer is no. To allow any type of sugar or sweetener would to be compromising my goals.

I finally realized that advice such as "just cut back on the sugars and carbs" is like saying, "I'll try".

"I'll try" is not the same as "do".

*** Either I do, or I do not. ***

In my case, it's all or nothing. This is how serious I am to reach my goal.

In the mean time, I will be researching the chemical differences between honey, fruit syrups, and tree syrups.

For now, all my food is only sweetened with fruit. For example, I have a serving of oatmeal with whole milk, sweetened with thinly sliced grapes and a tablespoon of powdered cocoa or cacao. Chocolate flavored breakfast without processed sugar. I love it!

It really is working. I'm constantly snacking on the fruits, nuts, and veggies, and losing the weight.

I'm glad I found your journal. Very inspiring.

I once gave up sugar for a year! But it came back one Xmas.

I now have sugar only at weekends, but as you know, it creates a false hunger feeling which is quite unpleasant.

You are doing great. Do you allow any honey or concentrated fruit syrups?

Some good news today. My pants looking a bit baggy lately and so I decided to try on a new pair from my local store.

Low and behold, I was down 2 whole inches! WOWZER!

I'm just a few pounds from goal, but now that I think about it, I don't think the weight matters any more. My new goal is to get down 2 more inches, because that is the waist I had when I was 20 years old, which was about 28 to 29 inches.

Well, there it is now, the new goal, 28 inches.

Let's see how close I can get...
Me VERY happy!

Mixed up a batch of melted 100% cocoa and whipping cream.

I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm having fun.
Dipped some orange slices into a rather thick Ganache. Probably too thick.
Added some more whipping cream to make a creamy-er Ganache. That looks better.

I poured the smoother result over a sliced banana.

The rest of it I mixed with some mixed nuts to use it up. It's in the fridge now cooling down. I can see I did not use a big enough container and had to stop, but practice makes perfect. If this is too unpalatable, I may try 88% cocoa until I find that perfect mix.

UPDATE #1:
Just tasted the experiment. The banana with the smoother Ganache, much much better. Less bitter and much smoother. Gonna experiment some more to find my perfect ratio of cocoa and whipping cream mix. The orange slices more than enough to offset the bitter 100% cocoa. Liking this no sugar desert.

UPDATE #2: Was poking around on the evil Internet and discovered that cocoa powder is a natural appetite suppressant?!

Maybe that explains why I suddenly lost interest in eating any more cocoa laced orange slices. I don't endorse this info, but here are some interesting links.

Feeling great!

My thoughts for today...

Doctor Robert Lustig is right.

I can buy pleasure, but not happiness.
Pleasure does not bring happiness.
Sugar is pleasure and results in pain.

I have found happiness by breaking my sugar addiction.

Today's lesson is Ketchup.

I received yet another Face Book post, comparing regular ketchup to certified organic ketchup. I have nothing against ketchup and I happen to love the stuff, but it is laced with sugar.

Here is the FB message and photo:

"Organic foods are no safer or more nutritious than conventional foods.

Also, no, the organic option is not “better” because it contains sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup as they are metabolized similarly by our bodies. HFCS has almost the exact same sugar profile as honey, too."

Let's look into this deeper. Notice the prices. I have no idea what the price was when the graphic was put together. So, I went on line and decided to look up today's price for each of these products. Here is what I found.

Heinz Tomato Ketchup, 20 oz bottle $2.23, that would be $0.11/oz.

Heinz Organic Certified Tomato Ketchup, 14 oz Bottle $2.54, or $0.18/oz.

And as an added bonus, Heinz No Sugar Added Tomato Ketchup, 13 oz Bottle, $2.36, or $0.18/oz.

When compared to the scary graphic, not so horrific as presented.

Comparing the labels, the 20 oz and 14 oz BOTH contain 4g sugar/tablespoon (17 grams).
The 13 oz bottle (no sugar) has no added sugar. But, closer inspection of the no sugar label shows that it contains SUCRALOSE, a super sweet artificial sweetener. Sucralose is found in sports power drinks. It is another super sweetener that interferes with the brain's ability to process Leptin, or the signal that says, "hey, you are full, stop eating".

So, the question is which is REALLY better for "ME" in the long run?
In reality, none of them. If I had to pick the lesser of all three evils, it would be the organic ketchup with organic cane sugar, as it lacks the high fructose syrup, the corn syrup, and the sucralose, all of which affect the brain and the rest of my vital organs. In case you did not know, 4g of sugar = 1 level teaspoon of sugar. So if you are drowning your food in ketchup, like I used too, it's not hard to see that you are easily exceeding the World Health Organization's recommended servings of six teaspoons of sugar per day.

What would be a better choice?

My wife and I looked around and found organic and unsweetened ketchup that has only 1g of NATURAL sugar (from the tomato) per serving made by PRIMAL KITCHEN. Not endorsing the product, just saying, there are alternatives. We use this product sparingly. It's about twice the price of regular store brands, but you are getting healthier food that is not diluted with sugar or a sugar sweetener. If you think it is expensive, compare the price of that to future health care costs and doctor visits.

About 868 days ago, I started with SparkPeople. It's been a Yo-Yo ride the whole time. Weight trending up and down with success and disappointment.

I have been exercising my rear end off until my muscles give out. I work hard and I play hard, but still, the inches refused to melt away. I always considered myself to be healthy and fit, yet test results, the scale, and the mirror paint a different picture.

I have been entering the calories burned and the calories eaten with religious fervor. I stalled with multiple plateaus, only to gain the weight back and vowed to restart and try again. Two feet forward, one foot back. Believe me folks, I was a hard core subscriber to the formula that "calories in = calories out". I no longer believe that formula as the sugar industry would have me believe.

The reality is sugar is the enemy. I am living proof of that.

It's been over a month now since I stopped eating added sugar from canned food, processed food, snacks, juice, sodas, you name it.

In the past 30 days, I have made more headway into weight loss than the previous 868 days. My fat is melting away.

My weight is still trending downward. In about 2 weeks I will be entering what is considered to be the healthy BMI weight range for my height and I could not be happier.
I'm enjoying exercise more as I'm not working out so hard. I'm less depressed. There is a happy face in the mirror.

33 Days SUGAR_FREE!

That means I did not consume any added sugar in that time. So proud of myself. I'm just a few pounds from goal.

It hasn't been easy. Gotta check them labels carefully. All meals prepared from scratch. Not so hard really. Avoiding processed foods, canned foods, chips, candy, pastries, juices, and sodas.

I've done and and I can keep doing it!

My wife and I have stopped counting calories and I now only use my fitness tracker during exercise.

We are both still losing weight at a healthy rate. We put butter back in our diets, we eat more fruit and we sweeten all our food with fruit. We only eat one type of bread that is minimally processed. Snacking on veggies, fruit, avocado, nuts, and cheese. No sodas and no artificial sweeteners. We only drink water or whole milk.

I'm just a few pounds from goal and couldn't be happier. We are also making more food from the "Fat Chance" cookbook and I have to say, we are not missing the added sugar one bit.

With our brains now receiving the signals that we are full, we are actually eating less now that our brains are getting the signal from our stomachs.

It's really very simple. Pleasure or happiness.

We have chosen happiness.

I'm just a lowlife sugar free consumer looking for answers. I typically look for new documentaries on nutrition, heart disease, and other fun diet related stuff. Today, I found this video and thought is was very entertaining. Goes into the history on the foods we eat and how we got to where we are now.

Very entertaining and informative. This may be the best one yet. Enjoy.

17 Days without added sugar.

When the sweet tooth hits, I strike back by eating one or two oranges. Those things are filling. Yes they have sugar, but it's not processed, and they are packed with fibre.

My wife does the same. In the past 17 days, she has lost 8 pounds.

16 Days without added sugar.

Just found this: American Heart Association recommendations on sugar...

The short story:
"American women, that’s no more than 100 calories per day, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar. For men, it’s 150 calories per day, or about 9 teaspoons. The AHA recommendations focus on all added sugars, without singling out any particular types such as high-fructose corn syrup."

The long story:
www.heart.org/en/healthy-living/healthy-ea
ting/eat-smart/sugar/added-sugars

My first step to losing weight was to eliminate the sugar drinks, specifically, sports drinks, sugary carbonated sodas, sugar free sodas, and fruit juices.

I now focus on water, whole milk, and fruit flavored water that I make myself. This single first step eliminated the majority of my sugar intake. Not only am I spending less money on beverages, but the money I save allows me to purchase healthier foods.

It's a simple little step, but a huge step in the right direction.

"Starting" a new journal. Thought about a blog, but I prefer this.

15 days without sugar now. Went cold turkey.
Saw several YouTube videos by Dr. Lustig about "Sugar, the Bitter Truth". A real eye opener. I tried going sugar free before, but didn't fully understand the hurdles I was to encounter. Now, everything is crystal clear. My high school motto: "Feed Freedom with Knowledge". I know much more about sugar than I ever have before.

No more added sugar or artificial sweeteners for me. The YO-YO-ing weight has stopped. My weight has settled down to a gradual declining trend of weight loss. I'm now 3 pounds away from a healthy BMI range. I'm back on a better track. I was exercising like a mad man and not getting anywhere.

I now only eat grass fed protein, fish, veggies, fruits, nuts, water, and whole milk. Zero processed foods. My wife is with me on this and we now prepare food from scratch. Guess what? The sugar cravings have gone away.

Why?

Cause the sugar and sugar substitutes reek havoc on the body's feedback system. The brain is tricked into thinking it's still hungry when in fact, the stomach is quite full.

The World Health Organization recommends that for an adult of a normal body mass index (BMI), that works out to about 6 teaspoons -- or 25 grams -- of sugar per day.

I discovered that the food on my shelves exceeded than by hundreds of times over.

My wife and I cleared out our pantry and donated all our food to charity and we started over.
We are both now losing weight, eating less food, and not exercising so hard.

Fat is not the enemy, sugar is.
