GUM: Pros and Cons

Quick and dirty summary:

I'd say the pros outweigh the cons. I suspect gum chewed 5,000+ years ago was to help with dental care cause they didn't have electric tooth brushes back then. I'd avoid added sugar and artificially sweetened gums, and lean towards chemical free gums similar to what cave people would have used.

I found some Keto gum at my local health food store and started chewing. They chew just like other brand name gums. The key ingredient to look for is XYLITOL.

I want to see if it helps curb the desire to snack between healthy meals.

To reduce filling landfills with my used-up-gum, I'm gonna recycle my gum for as long as possible. I'm gonna relabel my counter to 'GUM' to see how many days I can go before I lose it or it becomes unchewable. That should be interesting. The experiment starts today.

The long story with many links:

Best Aspartame-Free Chewing Gums For Keto Diet

www.ketovale.com/keto-chewing-gum/

I'm not on a Keto diet, but it is close to my modified Paleo type diet.

There are many pros and cons to chewing gum.
vittana.org/15-pros-and-cons-of-chewing-gu
m

American Dental Association (ADA) gum recommendations:

www.mouthhealthy.org/en/ada-seal-products/
category-display?category=Sugar+Free+C
hewing+Gum

However, the ADA does not list Keto gums. All ADA approved gums are listed as:
1. Helps prevent cavities when chewed for 20 minutes after eating.
2. The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs’ Acceptance of Gum is based on its finding that the physical action of chewing Gum for 20 minutes after eating, stimulates saliva flow, which helps to prevent cavities by reducing plaque acids and strengthening teeth.

Well...any gum falls into that category if chewed long enough.

Looking for the ingredients for "Orbit Gum" I find this info: (Read the cautions)

www.livestrong.com/article/96715-orbit-gum
-nutritional/

This site seems to be more worried about gum waste.

Just remember, I don't endorse anything.
I'm no expert on anything.
I'm just like you, just trying to stay healthy.

My thinking about gum (because I tried it for a while, but have never really been someone who likes gum) - is that it stimulates digestive juices because you're masticating. I think a drink of water is better as it actually fills the stomach for a while.

I'll be interested to see what your research throws up. Gum can be a sneaky way of getting sweeteners too!

Signs are good and helpful reminders. Well done!

IN THE NEWS: GUM!

This is what 5,700 year old gum looks like.

Link: www.scientificamerican.com/article/ancient
-chewing-gum-reveals-a-5-700-year-old-
microbiome1/

What is not in the article is when gum was invented and what it was used for.

I'm going to make a wild uneducated guess. I'm guessing it was used to help ward off hunger for the hunter-gatherers. It could have also been used to distract the user from pain and other ailments. The gum could have been laced with honey to make a long term treat. It could have been laced with medication. Who knows. I sure don't.

But, it now has me thinking. Suppose I could find some sugar free gum and void of harmful chemicals? Would it help me overcome my urges for a snack?

I'm going to look into this some more. I'll let you know what I find out.

Time for the water of life--Coffee!

I am one of those people Gill directed to your journal. It looks like you are doing intermittent fasting, stopping eating at 6PM. That is an effective way to cut out late night snacking. Works for me, too.

Gill, I like the little signs you posted on the sweets at work. Good way to keep the reminder fresh and help to strengthen your resolve.

This might make you giggle, Harry! At work, struggling with the chocolate and cookie gifts, I decided to take action and stick notices on them - for myself! It worked yesterday - I think there's a good chance it will keep on working for me.

Best I can do is limit the damage.
Thank goodness, it only comes around once a year.

Before, it was mindless eating.
Now, it's mindful eating with a slip here and there.

So far, I'm maintaining with hopes I can persevere.

I didn't sleep well last night. So, instead of fighting it, I did some web surfing and found this interesting article.

This is what happens when you hike all day for a month:

Just goes to show that staying active can improve your lab results.
I may extend my walks just because...I can.

Citizen Science.

Spent yesterday on our annual Christmas Bird Count. Hiked about 3 miles in snow along the river and local mountain, counting birds.

Later, we have a pot luck dinner and report our numbers which get forwarded to the Audubon Society.

Sometimes, other activities get in the way of counting calories, but that is okay.

Continuing to build my good habits.

Completed to success.
Maintained discipline to record all meals and calories to perfection.

Completed cardio activities.

How many calories should I eat?

Found the answer from this fellow while surfing the web:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hymq1_N4Tts

"It's a journey of SELF DISCOVERY", and "SELF AWARENESS".

I like his advice. I don't want to gain weight, so it is logical that to maintain my weight, I don't wont eat more than I need, Right? He says, start high and get used to it for 2 to 3 weeks, then make adjustments. My activity is honest and exactly matched to what I actually do each day.

So far, my calorie target is high and I don't feel hungry, and I'm losing weight. I just need to stay on target and keep COUNTING THEM CALORIES.

Dinner is the most challenging meal. I weigh everything in grams to get an accurate calorie count. Salad is more work, so for that, I now use a cup measure and just chop everything to fit in the measuring cup. So, it becomes a cup of this or a cup of that. SPARKPeople is good about providing calories per cup of chopped food. So that helps save me some time.

Finished off my meal at 6 PM with a cup of whole milk and then later, some Peppermint Bark Cool Winter Herb Tea. Delicious.

You've found a great solution to the Spark auto-adjustment thing. Well done!

I have managed to change my eating over the past year or so, cutting out the big evening meal, and eating something lighter before 6 pm. I'm used to it now. As you say, it means that my body gets a break from digestion for about 14 hours - which is beneficial.

Great to hear about the positive changes you have noticed.

The habit I want to improve on is to *accurately* track my food calories.
One thing that gets in the way is the exercise tracking.

When I track my exercise, SPARK likes to add the burned calories to my food calories. The food calorie range gets bumped up. I don't like that. I know I can change it so that SPARK won't add them in, but sometimes, there is a SPARKPeople system reset and the default is to add them back in. I don't want to eat back the burned calories.

To get around this *snafu*, I have changed my tracking habits. I now only track my exercise after I have finished eating for the day. Reduces the math confusion too.

My food calorie range is 1500 to 1850 calories per day. My target is 1500 calories. If I go over, I have 350 calories I just don't worry about. If I go over 1850 by a small amount, the exercise calories burned should cover the excess.

Yesterday, I hit 1500. A success.

1500 to 1850 is a good range. I do not experience any hunger in this range.

So far, so good. I keep my BuJo handy so I can log what I eat and a scale to measure everything in grams. Some quick math in the journal confirms the numbers.

The weak spot comes in around dinner time, so I am focusing on *accurately* logging the food at that time.

The second thing I want to improve is to NOT EAT ANYTHING AFTER 6 PM.
The pros and cons are well known:

www.livestrong.com/article/227439-can-you-
lose-weight-if-you-stop-eating-after-6
-pm/

However, what is not stated is that I sleep better when my stomach is not loaded up with food. Since I cut out late nite meals, my acid reflex has stopped. I sleep better and my exercise recovery is greatly improved.

Every day is a new challenge.

I had the experience of weaning myself right off caffeine a few years' ago because even a withdrawal from tea would give me a banging headache. However, the caffeine crept back in again - but less of it, and I use decaff coffee. I no longer get those headaches. Guess, I have the 'genetic' sensitivity mentioned.

Everything in moderation, eh? The main 'problem' is using caffeine to override fatigue and therefore depleting the adrenal glands. Adrenals being associated with stress, insulin resistance and consequently fat storage. But I guess you know all that.

Fact #12...Coffee drinkers tend to live longer.

Looking at two things about my Polar HRM program require me to make a tough decision.

1. Complete the recommended activity for the day, or
2. Reduce exercise to reduce the physical stress.

Well, I can't do both, but I have the goal to reduce weight. So I will concentrate on completing the recommended activities to reach my ultimate goal.

My Polar program says I need to back off a bit more.
I need to do more recovery exercise.
More walking and less jogging.
A bit more strength training.

I'll give it a go and see what happens.

But first...coffee.

Reassessing my workout routine.
Am I doing too much or not enough?

Tough to answer. Going over long term data.

Otherwise, it's a nice day with a lot of fog. Ice crystals covering everything. Sort of a magical crystalline appearance. Hard to describe. Spider webs covered in hoar frost.

Having coffee.

Checked out the App. Found an interesting quote from Benjamin Franklin. Franklin didn't have any apps to help him out. Speaking of which, I found a site listing his quotes.

Here's one I like:

“Instead of cursing the darkness, light a candle.” - Ben Franklin

SPARKPeople is that candle.

~~~ MAINTAINING PERSISTENCE ~~~
I came across an app recently called Fabulous which helps me establish those goals/habits.
I'm currently doing one which is about self-discipline, and the first task is to establish an attitude of gratitude.
In case you're curious (it might not be your thing) www.thefabulous.co/
Working on self-control through discipline.
Reminding myself that to reach my goals, I need to work on discipline.
Some search results:
www.wanderlustworker.com/how-to-discipline
-yourself-with-10-habits/
If I cannot discipline myself, then why am I here?
I have broken the sugar and processed food habit.
Exercise - I now have a daily exercise routine
I have much gratitude.
Meditation - I need to work on that
Forgiveness - doing it.
Active goal setting - doing it.
Eat Healthy - doing it.
Sleep - doing it.
Organization - needs some work
Time management - needs work
Persistence - now there's the rub. It's so easy to get sidetracked
All the above should be my daily goals
...and making coffee.
I believe it's about eating smarter and maintaining an active lifestyle.
I'm avoiding the sugar and processed carbs, and it's working great!
I'm maintaining now.
I just need to eat a tad bit less and be mindful of what I'm eating until I reach my goal.
Then, reset the calorie count to where it needs to be to maintain.
My problem is the final meal of the day. I tend to lose count of my calories.
But, this time...
....I can do it for sure. Me smarter now.
Making a lot of notes in my Bullet Journal.
Game on.
I have to say, I have similar thoughts. My weight settles happily at 115lbs, which is fine for my height - it's at the lower end of the 'healthy weight' range. But, when I see women with slimmer bodies at the gym - I wonder......... could I be slimmer/lighter/trimmer? Then I wonder......... am I prepared to put in the amount of work needed? Am I prepared to eat less?
Cardio & Strength training completed. YA!
Arm and shoulder are improving. YA!
Weight holding steady. I can't complain. YA!
Been thinking that I really want to see myself hit my ideal weight.
My BMI is good, but something inside of me says...ya, let's do it.
I was 125 - 135 pounds in my early 20s.
Nothing says I can't achieve that again.
Game on!
I am so looking forward to that. I need it.
Enjoying a cup of coffee with a pat of butter and sprinkle of cocoa powder.
3 mile walk.
Arm and shoulder still recovering. Getting better.
Did some strength training to work on arm muscles. Proceeding with caution with 25 pound weights. Slow steady reps to work on form.
I may try some new muscle groups tomorrow if no pain.
Completed a 6 mile walk.
Getting warmer outside. I think I will work on the house today.
It will give my arms a good workout laying some bricks.
Still on track for weight control.
I was interested to hear that the birthday cake made you sick.
A few years' ago, I ate raw vegan food for about a year. When I ate anything cooked, I threw it up again! Amazing how quickly our bodies can change, eh?!
I've been eating a lot less sugar. Even on my 'treat' days.
I'm back from a long trip and I must say my eating habits of avoiding sugar helped quite a bit. No weight gain while I was away.
Found this update this morning.
Again, pleasure vs. happiness.
I need to remind myself that:
1. Weight is controlled by diet.
2. Strength comes from exercise.
3. Pleasure and happiness are not the same.
Good day all.
