Welcome.

For many years, I was a carboholic I still love my pasta, but I started cutting back when I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes. I gradually decreased carbs so that I eat them mostly as fresh veg (as in salad but I do eat some cooked occasionally,) and gradually increased protein...... But then my tests started showing protein in my urine so I had to cut back there as well ..... Sometimes it seems like there isn't much I can eat.

When I get a craving for pasta or bread that simply will not go away after several weeks, I will give in for a meal but have to take extra insulin (Oh, boy, does carbs ever do a number on my sugars) to balance things out. Then I am usually fine for several months. lol Right now I honestly can't remember the last time I had pasta.....

It is always an ongoing endeavour to balance what I need with what I can handle but I try.....

Best wishes to you on your quest to eat healthy for you.

I'm a retired critical care R.N. who did some diet counseling so I do consider Paleo a good diet but there are many others. I don't believe in one size fits all diets. You can lose weight on practically any diet but they are not necessarily healthy. Vegetables should be the basis of any healthy diet. They are the power houses of food. Atkins, Keto, South Beach, Primal, Pescetarian, Flexitarian, High Fiber, Volumetrics, Weight Watchers, Whole Foods, DASH, Mediterranean, Protein Power, Low Glycemic are all good diets. There are plenty more but with all diets you or your doctor will need to tweak it. If you have heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, etc. than your diet will be different than mine.. My diet is actually my doctor's own diet prescribed for me specifically. I'm an overweight mesomorph and he has me on a high protein, moderate fat, lower to moderate carb, gluten free diet for hypoglycemia.

Welcome to the team! I also do IF and calorie count plus I carb count and keep my net carbs at 125gms a day or less.

Smart Carbing is a term which was coined by a co-leader of this team. While I do have other active teams dedicated to low carb, the focus on this team is a little different. We don't fear fat or protein or even healthy carbs so we welcome most diets but the chief focus here isn't about keeping your carbs below a certain level. It is about choosing healthy carbs. We encourage healthy sources of carbs like vegetable, fruits, seeds, nuts, and for those who can tolerate them, high quality dairy, legumes, and minimally processed whole grains. We prefer fresh whole foods as opposed to refined processed carbs. We encourage the elimination of unhealthy carbs like junk food, HFCS, added sugar, cake, cookies, pies, doughnuts, crackers, bread, cereal, candy. etc.unless these can be made in a healthy way. We are label readers. We are not eating instant foods, canned entrees, frozen dinners. So our diets usually contain less sodium, less artificial sweeteners, and less omega 6 fatty acids. Most of us prefer to avoid unhealthy things in processed foods like transfat, nitrites, nitrates, hormones, antibiotics, additives, chemicals, pesticides, preservatives, added sugar, high fructose corn syrup, fruit juice, farm raised fish, cured meats, MSG, foods that come in tins containing bisphenol-A, microwave popcorn that contains perfluorooctanoic acid, low fat foods, diet foods. Some of us go further and avoid caffeine, alcohol, soy, gluten, etc. I like fresh grass fed meat, wild caught fish/seafood, organic food. Lots of fruits, veggies, seeds, nuts, fresh meat, eggs, fish, seafood, healthy fats, high quality dairy or almond milk, and some legumes. Minimally processed grains occasionally. We feel that the best foods don't have labels and if they do the ingredient list is brief.

Hi everyone,

I'm checking out all the low carb groups on SP and this one looks like it has some activity so I'm joining in :)

I'm a few years into maintenance, (IF and calorie tracking), and in April I decided to shake things up and try something new, and started experimenting with LCHF. Not following a specific plan or have any specific targets-just focusing on lower carb, higher fat foods and seeing where this whole thing takes me emoticon Lately my carb intake has been pretty low so I 'may' be into keto territory but I also have higher carb days here and there so I'm not too worried about labeling my way of eating- I'm just enjoying good food and how I'm feeling now!

Can someone tell me what the definition of Smart Carbing is, I've never heard of that term before?
