Good morning, I am a return member of way back. I had computer problems and had to leave. This computer isn't the fastest one I have had, and get discouraged with it, but I am going to try to not let it get the best of me.

I live in FL, am a Widow of 5 years, have one wonderful, caring Son. I have HBP, and Kidney Disease stage 3, and of course at almost 86 Arthur has come to visit and won't leave. I had a bone scan and have Osteoporosis.

Check my Spark page, and ask any questions you want.

Marsha B.

This year is ending, and another one on its way. I plan to do things a little differently in 2019. How about you?

Hello Everyone emoticon
I guess this is the right place for introductions. I've been a Spark member since 2008 but for the last few years have only been participating on one team. I decided recently that I would like to branch out. I've been friends with Glenna (KITTYLADY1259) for a long time and so thought this team would be a good one to join.
I bought one of JoAnna Lund's books several months ago but mostly have just thumbed through it for ideas. I have two binders full of Spark recipes that I've collected over the years, mostly because they all include the nutrition information and are so easy to add to my nutrition tracker. Recently I've discovered Taste of Home's Light and Tasty Annual Recipe books, a collection of all their recipes for a certain year. I bought 4 of their books from amazon for only about $4.00 each. Their recipes also include the nutrition information and have lighter versions of other recipes included too.
Feel free to drop by my Spark page and say hello.

Welcome to Healthy Exchanges team. I don't think any of us are spring chickens. We are all working toward being healthier. Do you have any of the Healthy Exchanges cookbooks? If not, scroll down on this team page to the .recipe forum and you'll find lots of recipes. We also share other healthy recipes.
My name is Jan, I live in Oregon.
We meet most days on the general discussion forum - whoever gets here first starts a thread with the day (like Saturday, January 2).
We'll look forward to getting to know you and encourage you on.

Good Morning Y'all... Just found this group & it looks interesting. Would love to be a part of it if y'all let me. I'm not a spring chicken, & old habits are hard to change. But I'm trying. This is a lifestyle change for me... one step at a time. Hope to get some good ideas from y'all! Thanks!

Hi Lrapps1,
Welcome to the team. We all know well the struggles of our old overeating habits. Thankfully the recipes offer us healthier choices. We usually have an almost daily topic where we share what is going on in our lives and what we are eating or planning to eat.
With Sparkpeople nutrition tracker you may be able to work out eating what is served at work.
We'll look forward to you joining in our visits here.
I'm Jan, I live in Oregon and I've used Healthy Exchanges recipes off and on over some years. My husband likes most of the recipes- sometimes having a double portion.
I think we are all looking ahead to the new year and a fresh start.

Hi! I am new again to Spark People. I have been gaining and losing the same 10-20 pounds for years now and I'm so tired of this roller coaster, I want off! I am 47, have two teenagers and 1 husband and I need to lose 44 lbs to be at a healthy weight. I've recently been trying intuitive eating only to gain more weight UGH!!!! I guess my intuition is to eat too much ;-). Anyways rather than sit around feeling hopeless I'm going to jump in again and work on eating healthy and eating less. I've also recently started doing yoga and I'm loving it. There is a program online called Do Yoga With Me and they have lots of free recorded classes. My biggest struggle is figuring out how to eat at work. I am a preschool teacher and they want us to eat what the kids are eating. Although we don't really have to eat it we do have to serve ourselves and it is really hard not to eat good food when it is in front of you. Anyways I am glad to be back and getting started.

Linda

Hi Mello,

You are welcome to join in the conversation. We usually have a daily thread.

Several years back someone recommended Penzeys Spices to me and I love them. I believe they are based in Minnesota but they ship and they have some stores in other locations. I've been to the one in Portland and it's a wonderful place to visit. One of my sons gives me a gift certificate to Penzeys and it's great fun choosing my spices.

Hi! I've been a Healthy Exchanges fan for many years and most (if not all) of the cookbooks. I used to buy spices from their website but it disappeared after Ms. Lund's passing. Any ideas about where to buy the spices now? I originally bought the cookbooks because my son-in-law was diagnosed with diabetes. Then I found I just plain old liked the recipes. I eat mostly vegetarian (a little seafood if out for dinner but never meat or poultry) and have continued to enjoy the recipes. Thanks for any help you can give - I absolutely loved the lemon pepper seasoning!

Just found this team! My husband & I lost weight a few years ago by going to Weight Watchers and using JoAnna Lund's cookbooks.

We're trying to get healthy again and I pulled my HELP and other JoAnna cookbooks out.

Hope to get to know you all better.

Hello All!

I am glad I found this team. I remember watching Joanna Lund on WQAD TV. I loved her. My mother in law has a few of her cookbooks and it's like wrestling a bear when trying to borrow them! Hope to talk to you soon.

We're here to encourage each other. It will be fun to hear what you are cooking and maybe you'll share pics of your Pyrex. I love the old Corningware. The smaller dishes with their glass covers are great for using in the microwave. I'm sure the Pyrex is the same. Is there a particular kind or color you collect?

Sorry, but you won't find pictures in JoAnna's cook books. Just wonderful recipes. For pictures I suggest the Reiman Production magazine Healthy Cooking or something like that. They also publish Taste of Home but that one doesn't have nutrition posted and aren't necessary healthy. You probably can pick up a Healthy Cooking monthly magazine at a book store or even the grocery store.

Welcome Twinster. Nice to have you on board. Be sure and check out our daily General Thread and jump right in.

I've gotten lots of JoAnna's books on the web site abebooks.com. There are a lot of sellers there and many many of her cook books for $1.00. With postage each will cost you about $5.00. Every one I've gotten has been in excellent condition and some have been brand new.

Hi, I'm Michelle from Illinois. I have many of Joanna's books and was deeply saddened when she passed. I lost 30 pounds years ago using her books and WW but then got pregnant (twice) and never got back down there again.

Cooking Healthy with a Man in Mind has the most dog eared pages.

I'm new to Spark and I was very excited to find this team!

Hi, I just discovered this team and immediately joined! I discovered HE in 1998 with Dessert Every Night, subscribed to the newsletter in 1999, lost huge amounts of weight with the HELP plan that year and have kept most of it off ever since. (I did regain some of the weight in 2008, but I've lost half of that and am in the process of losing the rest.) I stopped getting the newsletter about 2 1/2 years ago, and was saddened to learn that HE is now out of business, but I do have most of the books and all of the newsletters up till December 2007. And they are in continuous use, too!

just joined up - did really well with exchanges with WW and am headed that way again. Points are too easy for me to use on inappropriate foods plus I can easily see in exchanges that I'm eating nutritionally.

Cooked the Rio Grande Pork Tenders from: Cooking Healthy Across America tonight and family called it a win which was awesome since I have 2 that don't like tomatoes. Served it with brown rice and green beans.

Kristie, Welcome to this Team! I just saw your post today. You can get Healthy Exchanges books at any bookstore. I know Barnes&Noble has them. Borders do also. Walden Books carry them. I am not sure where you can find her recipes on line. Except I think a lot of the people have posted them here on the recipe forum. Maybe some of the other ladies can help you with that. Our Team Leader Heather is very knowledgable. Again, Welcome to this Great Team!
GOD BLESS!

I've never had that problem either, in fact JoAnn's pies with pudding are on the skimpy side to me. I know that is good to keep the nutrition low.

Also might you have gotten a larger pie shell than the recipe called for? I know there are two sizes.

I've never had this problem.

Which recipe was it?

Did you use powdered milk, or skim milk? Did you use the amount of water it said in the recipe, OR the amount of water/milk it says on the pudding box.

I know for sure my mom always makes the pies wrong (not saying you do) because no matter how much I try to help her understand it's the liquid that is in the recipe to be added and NOT what is on the box, or at least use the liquid amount on the box called for pie filling instead of pudding. She always adds the liquid amount for pudding on the box, and it's never thick like real pie, it's like eating pudding in a pie crust. lol And she never understands why! lol

So that's the only thing I can think of. Because I've never had the problem.

BUT, if you tell me the recipe, when I get home from vacation maybe I can look it up and see what's wrong.

Hi! It's been awhile but I am back. I Went through a period where I kind of gave up, but finally found the solution myself to my problems. I have diabetes and Rheumatoid Arthritis(RA). I was told to take prednisone for the RA. anyhow it made me gain weight and raised my blood sugar (BS). I fianlly found an anti-inflammatory prescribed by the Dr. called naproxen. You can buy it over the counter too. It is called Aleve in 200 mg tablets., but is not nearly as strong as the prescription. -379 mg.Now no more prednisone and I am losing weight again.
Anyhow, I have a question. this morning I made a HE pie. As usual there was too much filling for the graham cracker crust. and it ran over. Does anyone else have this problem and if so how do you handle it? Carolyn

Hi everyone! Heather invited me to join this group. I was on the yahoo list years ago and left for awhile. Tried to get back on but... anyway, I was one of the people that wrote instructions on how to use Master Cook. I have searched my drives and found several MC files full of JoAnna'a recipes. After I check for duplicates, I will be glad to share with anyone that wants them. That will take me a week or two emoticon It was perfect timing for Heather to contact me as I am ready to work on healthy eating again! Great to be here and hope to get to know everyone soon.

I'm so glad you like the recipe and find it useful. Joanna wrote me that she was using it in all the recipes she had been purchasing Bisquick for. I like it too and it keeps for such a long time which is very cost effective.

It was for low fat baking mix (Bisquick substitute). It was in the July 2002 issue. I just bought some more cookbooks at the discount store today. They are ones published in the last 5 years. Was looking through my cookbooks today and realized I misplaced the soup cookbook or lent it to one of my kids and never got it back. They tend to think my cookbooks are theirs when they borrow them! I end up having to retrieve them myself when I go visit them at their house. Got the soy cookbook to send to my sister. She likes soy milk, etc so thought she might like the cookbook too.

I’m looking to lose about 50-60 pounds. I already lost some weight. A very slow and tedious project. I have been a fan of HE for a long time. Don’t cook from the cookbooks as much as I should though. I have a lot of the books and even had a recipe of mine published in the newsletter some years back. Joanna had seen it on the HE web site message base and asked to include it in a newsletter.

I know you've previously told us, but remind me where do you live in Oregon. I know the Western side very well and the area along 97. I don't know a whole lot about the areas further east. I lived down there for a lot of years. I visit fairly often in the Eugene/Junction City area. Let me know where you are and perhaps we can get together.

Welcome Carolnyn. I agree the HE board has sorta dropped off members badly. Too bad as it was so active and a good archive of tons of recipes. We have built up the recipe thread here and I think you will find lots of them.

Hi! It's been awhile since I've been here. I am diabetic with RA and more mature than I care to be i.e. 66 years, but I hang in here. I have a concern and that is the Healthy Exchange board doesn't seen to be working. I have been a member since 97 and it doesn't seem to be organized like it used to be. Soooo I will just log in here. I love the simplicity of HE recipes and they are almost always things I have on hand. Lately I have tried Almased with the diet to lose weight. Too soon to tell if it's working or not, but being high protein I figured it would be good for me to try. I am losing too much muscle mass. Both rotator cuffs in the arms are gone and so is the ACL in my one leg. Being diabetic I really need help. Thanks. Carolyn

I found JoAnna several years ago, before I found her books even. I was on the original Healthy Exchanges list for several years before she passed. We developed a friendship that has lasting memories for me. I never got to meet her in person, but she was one of my closest friends.

I know there must be several of the original groups members here, but I do not recognize names. You will recognize me by my signature... Love, Judy

I am now retired, and have sixteen grandchildren. I live in Washington State up in the mountains. I do WW program with JoAnna's recipes. I am glad Randella referred me to this group. Love, Judy

What's great about this plan, is you can still stick to your points, while he sticks to the diabetic exchanges!

What most here on WW do is go through the recipes and write in their books next to each recipe how many points each one is.

Then what you can do is fix the recipes that are in your point range and his diabetic exchanges! (the same food for both of you!)

I do NOT do WW just the diabetic exchanges, and I have lost 100 lbs and came completely off diabetic medication, from being on almost 200 units a day of insulin!

For a great way to know the amount of diabetic exchanges correct for your husband, you may want to look into Richard Simmons, OR my website (click on Food Mover). Richard Simmons Food Mover is the EXACT same as diabetic exchanges, he just calls them Windows! lol And we call them Diabetic Exchanges. Here's my site if you need help with that part.

heathersrecipereviews.blogspot.com/

It may sound "high" carb for some who have been ingrained about low carb, but I speak for experience it worked for me and MANY others! :)

We have a current cook book cooking club going on, in the Recipe forum, we would love MORE participation, please join us! You don't have to have the book to join us, you can visit our websites for recipes to join us, and also you can more then likely check most the books out at the library. OR if you want to buy any of the books we highly recommend, Abebooks.com and Bookcloseouts.com as both are super cheap to get most the books from!

Oh your grandchildren will more then likely love these recipes as well! I know all the children I have served them to have! I was shocked some even came to ME and told me they liked some of the food and wanted me to give their mom's the recipe! And this was for vegetables! lol haha

Tell us in our daily thread, what kind of foods your husband and you like. One thing I've been so happy about is, I haven't had to give up desserts with this plan! Here's the thread-

Hi,
I am a retired math teacher. We just found out my husband is a diabetic. I have been on weight watchers for two years. I still have 30 lbs. to go. I cannot work the points for my husbands diet. The healthy exchanges works great. We have six grandchildren and I do not have time for two diets.

I sure regret that I myself never made it to Iowa to meet JoAnna. I feel like I know her through and through though that was how she wrote the newsletter and all her books, you just felt like you knew her, she knew how to connect with people. I miss her and love her so much.

I hope you enjoy our group!

Welcome Linda, I had the same problem you are having, trying to find the recipes. Go down to the Recipes Forum (the words that say that) and click on the title 'Recipes Forum' There are over 160 pages of recipes there. I hope this helps.

Hi Linda, welcome to the team. Louise is also preschool teacher.

The best thing about Healthy Exchanges is the whole family can eat the food and like it!

I've fed it to kids of all ages, and most have even been excited about eating it! They all love the desserts.

And what I was most shocked about is, for a church gathering I took a Healthy Exchanged Layered SALAD! And believe it or not two of the young kids (elementary school age) went on and on about how good the salad was, and they wanted more, and they wanted me to give their mom the recipe!
