I agree with you, Mary. We have a wonderful leader.
Thanks for all you are putting into it, Heather.

Awe thanks!

All I can say is JoAnna's recipes has changed my life. Foods I never thought as a diabetic I would have again, I can now have on a regular basis.

I'm working on a thread in the recipe forum!

Do they like chocolate and peanut butter together? Also do they like bread pudding? I have a wonderful chocolate peanut butter bread pudding that is to die for, if they like chocolate and pb together and like bread pudding. I'll put some in the Recipe forum, if they do!

Welcome to the TEAM!

Please give JoAnna's recipes a try. She puts them all through several taste testing reviews, before publishing them. From young grandchildren, and a local preschool, to her truck driving husband, and for her Cooking Healthy for a Man in Mind, she had a Cafe at the time, and had all men come in and rate and test recipes ALL day long for the book!

My advice is do NOT tell them it's sugar free! Just serve it like it's "regular" and I will almost bet they won't know the difference.

Please go to the Request a Recipe thread in the Recipe forum, and tell me what your families favorite dessert is. I will see if I have tried a recipe that is outrageously good that is a sugar free version of their favorite!

But, I can tell you I've had people licking the pie plate after eating some of her (JoAnna Lund's) pies!

Every one in the family almost always loves her recipes, from my young neices and nephews, to my husband, in laws, and even grandparent in laws!

Great to have you here Ann! I wondered if any one from Richard's clubhouse would join!

You know I started with the FoodMover as well, then found JoAnna! I love both Richard and JoAnna. JoAnna's recipes work so well with the FoodMover!

I like Richard's program and all, and his recipes are good. But, compared to JoAnna he doesn't have many. So even though I love Richard and his program, I don't think I would have been able to stick with it as long with out JoAnna's recipes, literally there isn't anything I crave that she doesn't have a recipe for!

So great to have a double fan here too! (Richard and JoAnna! lol)

Hi, Iris, great to have you here too! HE and the newsletter will for sure help with regaining a love of cooking! And wow how neat about your picnic! How fun!

Hi, I am Iris from HE Boards. I will be 68 on the 18th of this month. I have about 62 lbs left to loose. I want to try and regain my love of cooking. Cooking healthy is something I would like to do without thinking about it. I have many HE books, and newsletters. I have no excuse to not cook healthy.

Recently I went to my 50th year class picnic. I came home thankful for my health as good as it is. It has motivated me to try HE again.

Hi, I'm Ann, I'm 48 (almost 49), married to my wonderful husband for almost 3 years. It's just the two of us, neither of us had been married before. My husband works long hours as an environmental scientist and I'm a lobbyist and political consultant, so our days and evenings are very hectic.

I found Healthy Exchanges years ago when JoAnna first started appearing on QVC. Oh, if only I had stuck with her recipes...

Here we are, years later, and I dragged all my cookbooks out to start using them with the FoodMover (and I've bought a few more!) My husband LOVES EVERYTHING I make from the HE cookbooks and the newsletter, and I love that everything is so easy.

I started with FoodMover because a friend on a handbag forum had such success with the program, and I found my way to this forum because of the post in Richard's Clubhouse.

Thanks, Divabetic, for starting this!

Toby and I are a hearing-dog team. I am profoundly deaf. Hubby and I are in our 10th year of living full time in an RV traveling the country. This was hubby's retirement dream. I have been using many of JoAnna's recipes for approximately 4 years. Her theories and recipes gave me a upstart jolt for a renewed interest in cooking.

Welcome to the Team!

HE=Healthy Exchanges, which is a food exchanged based "diet" that JoAnna Lund created.

However, I personally just use the Diabetic Exchanges listed in the recipes.

This is what the newsletter says-

The Diabetic Exchanges are calculated by a Registered Dietician and the other calculations are computer based, using The Food Processor II software.

When the ingredient listing gives more than one choice, the first ingredient listed is the one used in the recipe analysis. Due to inevitable variations in the ingredients you choose to use, the nutritional values should be considered approximate.

The brands suggested are the editors favorites at this time. They have been carefully tested for taste, appearance and ease of preparation and are included only as suggestions. If you prefer another healthy brand, please feel free to substitute.

For canned goods, the most commonly found size is listed. If you can't find the exact size listed, use the closest size or two smaller cans that add up
to the same number of ounces.

RECIPE LEGEND

The following symbols are used after each recipe:
Br = Bread
Ca = Carbohydrate
Cl = Calcium
Fa = Fat
Fi = Fiber
Fr = Fruit
Mt = Meat
Pr = Protein
SM = Skim Milk
Sl = Slider
St = Starch
So = Sodium
Ve = Vegetable
OC = Optional Calories

Hi, found this group on the weight watchers site. New to both weight watchers and this site! Was wondering what the abbrevations under the servings mean on the recipes that are in the newsletter?

For example in the Jan 2002 newsletter, the "Something Different Casserole" what does the following stand for:
HE: 1 ½ Pr, 1 1/4 Ve, 1 Br, ½ Sl, 15 OC
I think this information would help me if I need to prepare these recipes for more or less people knowing what the serving breakdown is. Thanks for your help and starting this team. Seems like it will be very helpful to lots of people in their weight loss!

Hello! I just joined yesterday and it's going to take time for me to figure out how to use this forum, the setup is very different from what I am used to. :) My name is Angie and I found HE by accident earlier this year and now have every cookbook (just about). Love her recipes, and so does my family! I'm down 18 lbs. and about 40 more to go.

Hi everyone, I am Vicki from Wisconsin. I have been on the HE email group for a few years. Have many of JoAnna's books and booklets and subscribe to the newsletter as well. I exchanged many emails with JoAnna as we were both going through our cancer treatments. She was truly a special lady.

I have mostly followed the Weight Watchers program through my years of trying to get healthy and back to my goal weight. It has been a battle. I am hypothyroid and it has been giving me some problems the last year and caused about a 40 pound regain in weight but I am sure that if I had not been here working on losing weight it would have been much more. I like moving my tracker down though and not up.

Thanks for the invite on the HE group to come here, Heather. Hope to see more of the group sign up on SP. Look forward to getting to know all of you better.

Vicki

July and Granny, I read your replies, but I will have to come back later to reply! My daughter is needing me right now. But, in the morning I will post!

For now if you go to my site www.wolfprncez.homestead.com/reviews.html and click on FoodMover, I am on the 1800 calorie card-because I'm breast feeding so I get more. He would be on a 2000 calorie based diet. Which the FoodMover part of my site would explain how many starches, fruit etc that is.

I was bored too with meat/starch/veg. But, that's what is great with JoAnna's recipes, they already have the diabetic exchanges listed, which is the same as Richard's exchanges, so any of her recipes you just know to close (check off) those exchanges and you got it made! :)

HealthyExchanges.com is the HE boards, JoAnna's site. And yes it's free. But, has a lot of Spam right now. If you click on Who is JoAnna, and What is HE, thread that I started in the General Forum, it will explain all that too. :)

Hi Patty!
I like your username too. I've crocheted also, but I'm not very good at granny squares.. I cant seem to keep my stitches all the same size to make them look good. Also, I never can figure out how to stitch the squares together so they dont unravel. Gotta be machine washable in my house with two cats!
The weight loss ticker.. you go to your spark page, on the screen where it says "edit your spark page below". Then you just scroll down, and keep scrolling down, and you will see it. Click to put a check mark in the box that says "yes show weight loss ticker" or some such like that, then put in your info.
I keep hearing people mention HE boards, or healthy exchange I think they are. What is the website to go there, and are they free? That sounds like it would be helpful.
Thanks, nice to "meet" you on here!
Cheryl

Hi,
I'm Patty from Mi. My username is grannysquare because I love to crochet granny squares. Well actually I love to knit and crochet most anything. Some of you know me from the HE boards. This will be nice, cause no spam. I weigh 240 pounds. I love JoAnna's recipes. And her total plan. It is so easy, just cook her recipes and you will lose weight.
I am 60 years old, hubby and I together have 5 kids, 3 of his, and 2 of mine. We have 10 grands. Love those grands.
We have a dog and a kitty that we spoil rotten.
We are semi-retired, and one day hope to spend the winters where it is warmer than here in Michigan.
We love to go camping.
It will be good to get to know all of you here. Hopefully together we can get some of this weight off.
By the way, how do I get that weight thingie that some of you have put at the bottom of your messages. I like that.
Patty

Thank you all so much!
Divabetic, I love that username by the way!
I do have richard simmons food mover. I used it back when it was called deal a meal, but I quit it. This was several years ago, wow.. closer to 20 maybe! Then i got the food mover a few yrs ago and subscribed to his site. Incidentally, I made a friend on there who became a penpal, and she is the one who told me about this site, last year.
I still have that blue wallet and cards somewhere I think. It never occurred to me to use it for John's carbs.
Can you give me an idea of how many carbs a day you have, and I can guesstimate from there? We cant afford to pay a referral right now to one, because of the new mortgage and the old house hasn't sold yet, etc.
I was just going to try to guess if you could tell me yours, but if you have some kind of chart there, his weight is 205-210 and he's 5'11". Mostly muscle, he's pretty stout, and I don't know if age is a factor, but he's 54.
I finally began to get serious about my weight last year, and have done pretty good so far. But, it is mostly due to getting on the treadmill, and counting what I eat, which guilts me into eating less junk. I haven't been really eating a lot healthier though, just increasing the veggies at meals.
I could really use some help with pulling together an entire meal or meals, that are within normal carb range. THe reason I got frustrated with richard simmons is because I would look at the cards, and see the serving sizes, but we got tired of eating a meat, rice and veg nightly.
Re-reading, this sounds like whining. I really want to do this, it is just a whole new game for me. I grew up in the south, and learned to cook fattening food, high carb, etc.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Cheryl

Granny, I used to only eat sugar free ice cream. But, now a lot of "light" ice creams with sugar are the same carbs as the sugar free. So I really don't "limit" myself to only sugar free ice cream now.

I read the calories and carbs. And if they are low enough I get it.

A lot of Edy's/Dryers light and even regular ice creams are only 110 to 120 calories a 1/2 cup!

For instance their limited edition apple pie ice cream out right now, does not say light or sugar free, yet it only last 120 calories! Same with their pumpkin! And their Loaded Ice creams for the most part are also low calories (not all of them but most), for instance their loaded Cookies and Cream is only 110 calories. Others that are "sugar" free Cookies and Cream are 120 and up!

So I've learned to read all the labels! lol Some times I'm surprised.

However, when I first started only the sugar free ones were "low" calorie. Now it seems like a lot of them are!

Also beware of Blue Bunny, sometimes their sugar free ones are REALLY high in calories! Like over 200! But, others are really low and great tasting too! I like Blue Bunny don't get me wrong, but sometimes their Freedom line can be decieving and be way high in calories. Other times they are surprisingly low in calories! lol haha

cheryl, the carbs bring mine up, be careful. good carbs. I use jack sprate bread or whole wheat. brown rice instead of white. go easy on the potatoes. I eat them once in awhile. I have a cookbook but haven't looked at it yet. I gave my husband a bowl of ice cream at night. the doctor approved of it. of course I got the sugar free but I still think you need to be careful of the sugar free stuff. walking is good. I am pre and keeping my numbers down. I have notice when I eat carbs at night my bs is highter in the morning. I have had a piece of candy at night and it is low. figure that one out. I eat in moderation and losing weight. my husband would walk fast around the block when his bs went up. I think we have to figure out what is good for our body. keep tracking and good luck.

Great to have you here July!

First of all, I'm a diabetic as well. I was on insulin for 5 years, I have been off insulin for around 2 years. (I was off, then I got pg, and the last month of pg I needed back on it cause the placenta changes your blood glucose, then literally right after giving birth my bgs were normal again and haven't needed insulin since, that was over a year ago).

Any way, 1/3 cup of rice is 1 starch/carb exchange according the American Diabetes Association. And 15gms of carbs. (this is cooked not raw).

How many should he be on, that varies, for his weight and such.

I how I was able to lose weight, and get off insulin and all diabetic medication was doing Richard Simmons Food Mover which is based on the American Diabetes, and American Dietetic Associations diets.

And using JoAnna Lund's recipes, because they list the Diabetic Exchanges.

If you want to learn more about Richard Simmons Food Mover program, go to my site wolfprncez.homestead.com/reviews.html

Click on Food Mover, and it will explain how many exchanges some one should have etc. I also really highly suggest buying his program if you can afford it, cause it will list all the foods and tell you exactly how to count them!

JoAnna Lund's Healthy Exchanges recipes DO use Splenda. I have had no ill side effects from it. And I believe it's safe. It's been approved in Canada for over 20 years, before it even came to the USA. BUT, I do NOT push my views on others. So you may want to check her recipes out, they may be for you and they may not. It's up to you though.

Personally I like them though cause they are Man and Kid friendly as far as taste goes! lol And of course they've also helped me lose 100 lbs! So I just love them!

Hi!
Thank you for starting this team. JUST last night, I was searching through the spark teams list, trying to find one for diabetics. All I'd found was lowfat or low carb.
I am SO glad you did this, and I will be a regular customer! haha
My husband is battling high blood sugar. He gets medical care from the VA and one time he'll go and hear he needs on insulin, another time they will say you can control it with diet. It gets from 170 to 200 at times, even before he's eaten.
The problem is me. I haven't cooked very healthy in the past, because of a sheer lack of knowledge on diabetic cooking. I've looked at various websites, but I don't want to do artificial sweeteners. I am starting to use stevia though, in place of sugar for me, too.
When I do cook a healthy meal, his blood sugar is better. one portion of meat, one whole grain type starch, and the rest of the plate veg is what I call healthy. What I'd been doing isn't fast food or anything like that, it has just been white rice, etc. I know that needs to change, now.
Anyway, we too live in a suburb of fort worth. We moved to Rhome from Dallas in July. I think it was a Mary Ellen who said she lives in the area, so howdy!

We've been married 10 years, no children.
I find recipes online that are healthy for diabetics, but I have no idea of two major issues.. 1. creating a healthy meal from that one recipe that stays within the carb/sugar guidelines and 2. what they even are. I've read so much conflicting information online about sugars, and how many grams of carbs are ok per meal. Please, do you have even a ballpark figure on how many grams of carbs a "diet controlled" diabetic should have? Or even how many carbs are in say, half a cup of rice?
Maybe someone will make a chart sometime.
Anyway, I'm SO glad I found this team. I just saw your posting on another group and joined.
Thank you!!
Cheryl

Hi Mary, great to have you as part of the group.

I personally like to cook once and eat a bunch of times! lol So I use all JoAnna's recipes, and the bigger ones I just eat left overs for a while, or freeze for later.

However, if you don't like leftovers, each newsletter every month has at least 1 recipe that is only 2 servings. And she has a book called Cooking for Two. And it has all kinds of recipes that are all two servings. Every thing from soups, to appetizers, to snacks, desserts and main dishes!

So I highly reccomend them.

I am so sorry for your loss. But, wow you have a lot of children! I came from a large family as well. (number 4 of 16-yes sixteen, not six children). And WTG on your 16lb weight loss!

And you are so right this is a healthy journey not a diet sprint! And that is also one of JoAnna's main points in her weight loss and maintance as well!

Hello. I am a big Joanna fan. I have all her books and have subscribed to her newsletters in the past. I met her at a local bookstore a few years ago and really enjoyed talking to her. I have been sold on HE since 1996 when I heard a tape of a radio interview she did. I was hooked. I use her cookbooks as well as my WW cookbooks to make healthy and point-friendly recipes.

I look forward to our meeting here on this board. Hope all of you have a great day. Thank you so much for starting this team.

Mary Ellen

Oh, by the way, I am 62 and live in a suburb of Ft. Worth Texas. I have been struggling with my weight for several years and can't seem to be successful. I am married and have two married children. Our son and his wife live in Colorado Springs, CO and our daughter and her husband live here in Texas. My daughter and her husband are expecting their first child (our first grandchild) in May. We are really looking forward to meeting him/her.

Welcome to the Team Lee Ann!

Right now I don't have any recipes posted yet, as I just started the group today!

However, I own all her books, most of her booklets, and all her newsletters!

If you want to learn more about her recipes go to Healthyexchanges.com

There is a message board there, but a lot of spammers have taken over so I started this to hopefully get away from the spammers.

At her site you can download a free newletter though from March something (not 2007, it's a really old March one! lol). Or you can give their office a call and request a free sample one. Their sample one will not be a 2007 either, but it will be a October one, from a year past.....what ever they pick. But, it will be from October, which ever year they choose to send you.

It's a really great newsletter, that I give direct credit for my 100 lb weight loss! With out it, the recipes and encouragement in it, I don't think I could of ever gotten this much weight off!

For recipes you can go to my website-

wolfprncez.homestead.com/reviews.html

I will post recipes as I can in this team as well!

If you have any questions, please feel free to start a thread in the General Discussion Forum.

Hello! My name is Lee Ann. I am 42 years old. I have been married for 7 1/2 years to my wonderful husband Ken. I was a member of Sparkpeople last year and then when several things in my life kind of took over I stopped logging in and keeping track of everything. The beginning of April this year I started again with SP and have been going strong ever since. I am new to the Healthy Exchanges recipes and newsletters. I had never heard about them until today so I thought I would join and check it out.
