Thank you for telling me about this group. I've joined and I've ordered a copy of the book from eBay $1.81 plus shipping. My weight loss has been a slow process, but it continues on a downward path, which is my goal. SparkPeople has helped me so much, motivation to continue on through 'everything'. Thanks for all the wonderful, really great people we meet here and who help us along.

Welcome Linda. Take a trip to your library and see if they might have any of JoAnna's books. They may be old but the recipes will still work today. The beginning of all her books she gives lots of information that is so helpful. Don't be afraid to half a recipe. No one likes to eat the same thing 4 or 6 days in a row.

Nov.19:
Hello Everyone; OregonGrandma here. I have already "met" Heather; I am here to introduce myself to the rest of you. I am 65 year old Grandma (Alan & Sara)with some health issues, including T2diabetes, asthma, arthritis, and angina...I am not very active (due to pain in body and fears of being "out" by myself if something happens)...I have very little contact with my daughters and grandchildren (their choice) so I am feeling a bit depressed. I am active in my Spiritual activities and enjoy the company of my Spiritual Family.

I must lose weight if I want to be around for a while longer. I am not following a plan now, but I do eat things that are considered healthy...I just need to learn how to eat them differently so that I can lose the weight. I need easy to do menu ideas that also works with a food stamp budget. I have little income. I like the recipes that I have seen on your team.

I do not know anything about your "founder" or her plan. But I will read what I find and hopefully learn to benefit from her expertise. I am impressed with Heather's success...perhaps others will share their success stories with me also.

I have a few cognitive issues (brain fog) so I will probably just navigate your team for awhile...until I find what works for me.

Please chat back...

Linda

Welcome to Yellow Rose and Diabetic123

I sure know the vitamin K story. My DH takes blood thinners and has to eat vitamin K sparingly. I thought we found a multiple vitamin with less Vit. K than most and then the last time I bought it the K had been upped. Vitamin K is found in the green vegetables, and asparagus and cabbage. We sure eat a lot of yellow summer squash, onions, beets, sweet potatoes, red and yellow bell peppers. I think iceberg lettuce has less than some vegetables. We do eat some green vegetables but I always try to have other fillers on DH plate as he is a big eater and a little underweight. (Life is not fair) I tend to make a lot of JoAnna's pudding/fruit type of salads. That is why I love her recipes so much. How many cookbooks do so many things with a sugar free pudding or jello.

Diabetic123 your doctor should have you attend classes for diabetics and have the dietition should help you with your food plan.

Welcome,
Yes, my doctor told me to stay away from vegetables, leafy Greens, Beef liver, Pork liver, Mayonnaise, Margarine, Canola Oil and Soybean Oil and the other things that I listed. It's hard to eat things. I will go to JoAnna's recipes and see what I can find. Thanks, Lynn

Yes welcome Diabetic123,

I am also new here as well. I know you will LOVE JoAnna's recipes....you won't believe what you can eat and still lose weight. I hope you get your VitK under control.

Did your doctor tell you to avoid it? Maybe a diabetic educator could help you. They really know about all kinds of things like that.

I'm not sure what has vitamin k except I've heard spinach does. The Healthy Exchanges cookbooks have good exchange information.

Welcome to HE!

With Healthy Exchanges, you can eat anything in moderation.

Please go through our recipe section and you may find lots of recipes that have foods that aren't high in vit K. Pretty much, I think you should probably avoid leafy greens for now.

Other then that, most other things probably don't have a lot of K as far as I know.

Hello to everyone,
I am new to this spark team page and I am so happy that I found this site. I am looking for some way to loose weight and eat foods that are better to eat. Being a diabetic is sometimes hard to do, but I am still keeping up with it. It's been 24 years that I had this in my life change. I am keeping a good food exchange for it and what more information about what I can do better for me. As of now I am on a no vitamin k, so I have to find food that don't have any vitamin k in it and also vegetables, meats - beef liver or Pork liver and others like mayonnaise, margarine, canola Oil, and soybean oil. The reason why is because I found out that I had a blood clot behind my left leg. If any of you have other food I could eat please let me now. I been eating hamburger, cheese, frozen sausage links with cheese in it, some cereal, milk-skim, water, steak (is that any good for me). emoticon emoticon

Welcome Gail. It's nice to have new friends come by. We are getting quite a following and that is wonderful. Check out the recipes also. Several of us have posted many that were favorites on the Ruth Bond website.

Hi everyone. I finally made it over here from the HE board. I was GailM over there but I couldn't use that name here (already taken). I just recently lost my DH and after a long time taking care of him, I'm kind of at loose ends. I'm hoping to get back into the habit of posting and chatting with some old friends and make new ones. emoticon

Hi everyone,
Glad to be joing all of you here on this team. I am very new to Spark and I am just learning my way around. But boy was I ever happy to find the Healthy Exchanges team.

I love JoAnna's books and recipes. The first book I ever bought was her Diabetic cookbook. The doctor told my husband that if he didn't start eating right and stop eating all those Little Debbies that he had a very good chance in getting diabetes...so off I went to find a diabetic cookbook. I picked up JoAnnas and noticed how easy all the recipes were so I bought it. Loved it.....BUT

My husband didn't come down with diabetis but I did. LOL....so since that time I have tried to buy a lot of her cookbooks. I have a lot but never counted them.

I look forward to visiting with all of you..glad to be here.

Hi again. Reading the posts I see there are Weight Watchers on here too. I have belonged to WW in the past but can't remember all the rules about exercise and gaining extra points. I also think but not sure that you had ten extra to use during the week or for a special occasion. I think they had me on 24 to 30 daily. Not sure. Can someone clear this up for me. Carolyn

if I didn't mark up my books, I would be lost! I have made notes, dog ear'ed, post it note tabbed, documented tried and must try recipes, and you name it about her recipes! I have a special binder I keep all of it written down.

I've even documented most of the cooking tips, Q&A's from the newsletters, anything to gain more about Healthy Exchanges and her methods. JoAnna had a special talent that does not come naturally to me that was special.

I will check out abebooks. they seem to be still running even though Amazon has bought them out.

Thanks Ann!

Welcome Randella, wow you and Heather both have quite a collection of Jo's cookbooks. I only have about 23 plus a few of the skinny ones. I recently ordered the last 6 I got from abebooks.com. They have sellers from all over and each book was just about $5.00 that included postage. Every one of them was in great condition and no page markings. I think a couple were brand new. I mark up my cookbooks.

No,sorry I don't have the spice booklet, I didn't even know about that one until just now. I have the spice sampler, but that sounds like not what you're looking for. I'm on a hunt of her commercial spice recipes though. I noticed they are called HE spices now in the recent newsletters.

I still need to order Cooking with Splenda, Cooking with Soy, and the cancer coping Lemon pie book. I hope the Soy book is a good one, I'm excited about that one.

Thanks for the warm welcome! and thank you for keeping JoAnna's healthy cooking going. such a nice tribute too. :)

Welcome to the team!

We love to hear how people learned about JoAnna! That's wonderful! I have yet to find any of her books in thrift stores, but I'm always on the look out for them.

I too had to have all of them! lol And all the newsletters too! lol I am missing but a few booklets too. I'm always hoping I can eventually find the few I'm missing.

You don't happen to have the Spice booklet? Not the flyer.

Hello felllow HE members. my name is Randella and I'm from the Sacramento area. I fell in love with JoAnna's Recipes eight years ago when I picked up my first book, Fresh from the Hearth from a used book store and I had to have more. in fact, I had to have all of them! I have over 12 years of newsletters, almost all of her books, cookbooklets, and samplers. I am only missing a couple that I can no longer get, The Miracles of Dry Milk, to name one. I love to cook and I have learned many of her techniques that I am known not only as a good cook, but also a healthy good cook.

I recently got back into HE and JoAnna's recipes (6 months ago) I am almost to goal in my weight, and my family always askes, "what's for dinner?" because they know it WILL be good!

I love reading reviews and look forward to participating.

Welcome to the Healthy Exchanges Team Coleen!

I'm so sorry about your school closing. That is just so sad. I am native american myself. I have never lived, or for that matter even visited a reservation, but my great grandparents did die on a reservation. And my mother and siblings were all born in a teepee, that my grandparents lived in. Although not on a reservation, just on a plot of land near a river in Arkansas.

Any how, I just love Healthy Exchanges, they will fit well with in the Weight Watchers plan!

Great to have you as part of our team, and I hope we can support you, and give you what you need.

Hi I am Coleen Miller. I am married and live in Isabel, SD and am junior high teacher there. My youngest son and I live here on an Indian Reservation, we are not Native American, and the town is very small (maybe 300) people....in fact our school will be closing after this year. I am the mother of 2 boys ages 17 and 26.

I want and need to lose some weight. I want to combine counting WW points with using HE recipes. I receive the newsletter as well as I have many of the books.

This year will be very stressful for me and I want to eat correctly through it all. My youngest son will graduate in May, my oldest gets married the end of June and in July I will have to move to Wyoming where my husband has lived and worked for 7 years. I will also have to find a new job.

I am looking for friends here with this group who can support me and give me ideas, as well as share recipes.

thanks for letting me join

Welcome to the Spark Team of Healthy Exchanges, Carole. I too remember the Exchange Program that Weight Watchers had way back when. I think everyone in this group uses JoAnna's recipes but maybe follows a different program. Some go to support groups and some do it on their own.

Hello,

I'm so glad to find this team! I love Joanne Lund's books. I've had the Healthy Exchanges cookbook for years. Everyone always loves anything I cook from that.

I need to lose 150lbs! I lost weight in college on the exchange diet. I had forgotten that this cookbook was based on that. Duh!

I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Any tips for getting started on this plan?

Thank you,
Carole

Hi everyone,
I'd like to introduce myself. I'm pattianne. I'm 57 years old, married to a great guy for 19 years now. We are raising two grandsons for the past 4 years. They are almost 12 and 10 years old. Needless to say they keep us very busy and they are our life. Their mom, my adopted daughter, went to live in Heaven so that is why we are raising them. They are good boys and bring alot of joy to our lives.
I met Heather on the Richard Simmons message boards and she intoduced me to Joanna Lund's recipes. I have 5 of her cookbooks now and I get the monthly newletter. They are so helpful. I get bored eating the same thing over and over...but with Joanna's cookbooks I never get bored. I have 100+ pounds to lose. I was doing pretty good until we lost our daughter then, things just came to a stand still...but I'm back and ready to do whatever it takes.
Heather, asked me if I would help out with posting some recipes, and I am glad to do what I can. Joanna was a precious lady and I felt a personal empathy with her in her struggle with breast cancer. I have had b-cancer twice and feel very fortunate that I am still here.
I look forward to getting to know you all.

Welcome to Healthy Exchanges, Susie! My husband has both diabetes and heart disease, and diabetes is on my side of the family also, so we've been trying to eat healthy for a while now - although I didn't get serious about it until last fall. I think you will find that eating low fat and sugar free makes a big different in your test results.

You might also check eBay for Joanna's books. You should be able to find good deals on used ones from eBay, Amazon, or half.com.

One of our favorite things about Joanna's recipes is her desserts. They are a wonderful way to satisfy that craving for sweets in a healthy way.

Hi Heather,
That's great! I think you'll like it. I had to add extra liquid (1/2 can beef broth + 1/2 can water) when I reheated it.

Hi everyone,
I finally got my first two HE books--A Potful of Recipes and Healthy Exchange Lifetime Plan (HELP). I'm having a lot of fun going through them and planning what to try. My husband who is also diabetic and a great cook is delighted with them. The first one we tried was French Onion Soup, because we have a lot of onions from the Farmers' Market. It was delicious! I'm so glad I discovered this team and HE. Sorry it took so long to get started! I got them from Half.com at eBay. Was looking for more than one from the same seller in order to save shipping. I now have Another Potful of Recipes on order. Thanks!!!
