Adele - I just LOVE your SparkPeople profile picture! I have a one year-old German Shepherd pup - they are wonderful dogs!! Welcome back to the group. I too have been lurker for the past year AND I've fallen away from my meditation practice. I'm ready to get back to both meditation AND SparkPeople.

As to your question, I find that a simple ten minute meditation practice helps me pause before making food choices. It gives me that moment to ask myself - am I eating because I am hungry? If yes, is this food selection the best choice for me? This has really helped me cut out junk food and make healthier choices. For instance, I would come home from work and reach for the Wheat Thins. I would eat Wheat Thins because I was hungry, I craved the Wheat Thins, and I wanted something salty and crunchy. I found - that I could eat, and eat, and eat Wheat Thins and still be hungry - so they weren't helping me curb my hunger. I convinced myself to start eating carrots and garlic hummus instead. I could still munch on something when I got home from work - it would help curb my hunger - it was crunchy and salty - AND - it would curb my hunger. Also - carrots and hummus have less calories and are more nutritious. I believe that the meditation helped me make that pause between making my decision to snack and actually selecting the snack. I KNOW meditation has helped me pause and make better choices.

After a long absence from SP and having veered off course, I'm here to re-commit to my weight loss goal.

I've been studying and practicing Zen for several years and am finding it immensely helpful to stay present and focus on the moment. I still have to make the shift to applying Zen practice to my weight loss and leaving food behind as a source of immediate comfort. So this is my goal for 2019 and the future: to use mindfulness and Zen to do what is best for my health and take loving care of my body.

I'm 57, single, and share my life with 2 gorgeous shepherds and a sweet cat.

I'm very interested in this group and look forward to learning how all of you use the practice to help your weight loss.

Thank you and a very Happy New Year to you all,

Adele
