We are not a very active team, but there are folks here who can offer you valuable advice.
Not sure what your comfort foods are. My treat after caring for my dad used to be a McDonald's quarter-pounder with cheese, fries and a chocolate shake. Can't tolerate them now as my tastes have changed.
My niece in-law turned me on to an easy steel cut oat recipe which might be a starting point?

I don't know if I belong here, but I'm thinking that my comfort foods are killing me. My knees have a slight fever in them, brought on by trying to remove the clutter from my life and too many trips to the basement. I am having trouble walking, and the hike from the bus stop to my desk each morning is half a mile. And, until I've been up and walking half a day, the pain walking is terrible. This morning I thought I was going to have to find a place to sit down a minute, and there was no such place, so I plodded on. I hate walking like this, so I have a bad attitude. I hope to find replacement comfort foods so I can continue on. I had 50 pounds off, lost my job and 11 deaths since Christmas, so there. I'm a wreck. I've said it. Now I have 15 more pounds to lose on top of the 50 I still had left to lose before all this negative stuff happened. When I was told I had to stop working because of some stupid law in Washington DC, I began to have horrible pain, and it continued for months. And, when I started feeling better, I ruined my knees by overdoing it. Is there any hope?

Hi I am returning to SP , recently. Doing well. Have several inflammation based disorders and doing low carb high fat/protein way of eating now. May have celiacs like mom died from eventually because it went undiagnosed while her diabetes did not .
I am now within 10 lbs of my goal weight, which is what I weighed in high school and the navy and is a good weight , allowing for muscles and a few curves where they should be , within decent sizes again., and I was an athlete back then who trained like an Olympian. Might not be able to do that now, lol, but I can get more fit and that is what I am working on.
I am maintaining nearly normal blood sugars now ( amazing how the weight began to drop by removing the culprits , which were too many sandwiches basically, or sub sandwiches) . I feel much better than I have in years in fact, including emotionally and mentally due to replacing deficient magnesium and vitamin D. Still working harder on that, its not perfect. The nutrition tracker helps if things are accurately put in in the first place.

Hi I am Maribeth age 54, here to find out more about the Anti-inflammatory diet. I would like to thank everyone for providing this information. The bottom of the pyramid is what caught my eye. I did not eat many vegetables before I start losing wt. about 6 months ago. Now, I eat vegs daily and make smoothies getting co many nutrients in a low calorie meal. I add grounded flax seed. After I blend the vegs I put it into a soup bowl and heat it up for the cold winter days. I live in St. Cloud, MN emoticon

Hi I am how to put it, re new? lol Been here long ago and findI join and don't do much. Well getting a total knee replacement Dec 1. and have gotten worse with my arthritis and fibro so know I have to get back to eating better....
Have so much to do before surgery and takes me longer cos of pain and slow walking. Oh well what gets done is what gets done. Family know and thankfully I have a helpful hubby who is retired and a daughter that isn't working right now. They will both be a god send, as my dad who will be 89 Nov 23rd lives with us, and is not well. We have had ihim in and out of hospital and now learned that he has a pleural effusion that is probably caused from asbestos from the boats in the war... He is a WW2 vet. also his kidneys are only functioning at stage 4 24% and stage 5 is dyalisis but they wont do it, as has bad heart and lungs. So going to specialist tomorrow to see what can be done. no surgery but what else.
Off to watch the voice and ask hubby to rub my L shoulder....

Hello, all! I'm new to the team, but not to Spark.
My name is Sharon, I'm 45, happily married, and mom of two. My kids are getting older (my son is out of the nest and my daughter is 12), so I've decided it's high time I should put some energy into taking care of myself for a change!
I've printed out Dr. Weil's Anti-Inflammatory food pyramid (thanks for providing the link!), and I'm currently reading Joel Fuhrman's "Eat to Live." Does anyone have any recommendations for books, articles, websites, etc that they have found helpful?

Thank you Kaligirl, that is very helpful. I'm going to take this slow since the water diet (drink 1 oz of water -- only water -- per half ounce you weigh) and adding more fluids can be challenging when a person is almost 300 lbs -- 150 oz of water is not quite 10 bottles!!!

My doctor put me on an anti inflammatory diet. It looks like most of the things I like are not on it. Could someone send me a pdf of the chart (it's too small for me to read online) :(.
I am looking forward to exploring new food options, especially in the protein department.

I for one know I couldn't weigh myself daily... but I set a goal of 1 pound per week. Weekends are my worst, so a Friday morning weigh in works best for me.

I'm really struggling with weight gain and inflammatory response now that I'm off HRT. I followed The Plan for some time but the daily weighing was making me crazy. It also stopped working for me.

I'm rebooting with Whole30 and will see.
I gather not everyone here is following one plan?

emoticon I REJOIN SPARKS IN MARCH. SINCE THEN I HAVE LOSS 13LBS. GIVE OR TAKE 3 OR 4 LBS THAT I HAVE LOSS AND REGAIN.( NOW I WEIGH 210LBS). I HAD BEEN HAVING HIP AND LEG PAIN WHICH AT ONE TIME WAS EXCRUCIATING. MY DOCTORS SAY IT IS ARTHRITIS AND INFLAMATION. I HAVE BEEN WALKING AND JUST RECENTLY INCREASED TO 3 MILES. I DO PRETTY GOOD WITH DRINKING MY WATER AND WAKING BUT I SEEM TO HAVE TROUBLE WITH MY DIET.

Hi all,

I'm Mandy. I don't have any ailments that have made me choose to eat this way, but it's a healthy way to eat. I'm obese and I want to help my body as much as I can while I am losing weight and maintaing (once I get to that point)...if I can decrease the inflammation in my joints I'm sure I'll be a happier healthier me.

Hi! Have been a Sparker on and off for some time. I have Fibromyalgia (among other things), and am supposed to be on an anti-inflammatory diet. Have not seen that on SparkP before. Found you, and hope for knowledge, reinforcement and encouragement. And I'll try to add to that, too! emoticon Would also like to know the best place for info/discussion...

I agree Kathy - 55 is entirely too early to deal with chronic pain and the more we can do to learn how to relieve it the better!

I used to live in Wallingford (near Rutland),VT

Mobility with so much pain is ALWAYS a huge issue, isn't it?
Have you tried a community pool? I find the water was the first place I was able to begin to move

I am only turning 55 so I appreciate the frustration of chronic pain "too early"
Thankfully forums like this give us a community of people who understand, because people who have not dealt with it ..certainly do not!

Are the crocuses poking up yet??

Welcome, Kathy!

It sounds like you have a lot of inflammation going on. I hope you find what you need in this group. I can completely relate to the knee issues. I've had multiple surgeries and both knees are still in chronic pain. Walking is not easy, but I can do it so I'm grateful for that. Congratulations on the weight loss! Keep up the great work!

Hi I'm Kathy, aka Geek Goddess!

I live and work in Florida BECAUSE of chronic pain..I moved here 4 years ago.
I am from New England-- RI 22 years, Maine, NH, VT then PA and NJ
until 4 years ago

Where to begin the list? You know the feeling, right?
Herniated disks in lumbar, thoracic and cervical they cannot operate on... (began 2004)
intrathecal pain pump implanted in my abdomen and hooked into spinal chord (2008)
two replacement knees (2014)
osteoarthritis
severe feet pain, especially at night
can only use sneakers for walking
diagnosed diabetic fall 2014-- still adjusting to that.. sometimes sugar is way off

I still work (drs office cant figure that out), but I am a professor and administrator at a state university.. trying to keep focus OFF the pain..
but I'm turning 56 and it is getting much more difficult...

Oh yeah-- GREAT news I have lost 54 lbs since Jan 2013 (started with stomach problems over 5 months..took opportunity to make it something good)
I went from 245 to under low 190s now... size 16 (from size 22)!
new goal with dr is 180
hoping MAYBE 165???

Hit massive plateau last 2-3 months in weight loss, trying to stay strong and build up stamina with knee replacements so I can be more active

It is not easy to keep mustering up enough patience to deal with our relentless challenges, is it?

Hi- I'm Moira. I should mention that I often say that "I created this diet." When we have health issues and possible eating intolerances, we will often eliminate that diet to see if we feel better. I started eliminating foods and eating this way some 10 yrs before Dr. Weil publicized it. I'm broke. He's rich for it. Whatever. I have a dairy allergy (causes Asthmatic Bronchitis), gluten intolerance (GI issues, etc), and a severe maltodextrin intolerance (severe GI issues). Because of the maltodextrin intolerance I've been doing some semblance of Clean Eating since 2005. I also used to have other sensitivies and extreme lethargy, but that has almost been eliminated with the gluten free diet. Add that I keep low to no added sugar, fairly low calorie to lose weight, and have been alcohol free since 2010. I've got many joint issues, diagnosed with Osteopenia nearing Osteoporosis, and Osteoarthritis in knees, neck, shoulders. My knees recently flared up, inciting me again that I MUST lose weight and keep it off to maintain my mobility (I'm only 57!). I had lost weight quite a few times, but kept putting it back on. It's time to get it off and keep it off.

I want to add a quick note. Before I was diagnosed with allergies, but was suspecting I had them, I had a problem with my feet- bilateral pedal neuromas, surgically removed, but it didn't stop the achy pain. After surgery I began investigating allergies. Skin testing revealed multiple environmental allergies (I was shocked!) and I was put on a nasal inhaler. The allergy medicine improved my foot pain. Hence, I suspected the pain was a systemic inflammation, the kind the diet is intended to resolve. No food allergies were diagnosed, but my allergist, with some trial and error and discussion, told me I had a dairy allergy, not lactose intolerance. The short story is that when I keep the food out of my diet that I am intolerant of, I don't need the allergy meds. A humorous aside, my feet are the first to tell me when I have a respiratory infection coming on, that pesky inflammation, I'm sure. One other lesson I learned early when pregnant with my youngest child, by who I am now a grandmother of a 6 year old, was that I had morning sickness but when I forgot my prenatal vitamin and took it at night, I had my morning sickness at night. A Pharmacist told me I was probably reacting to that brand (generic) of prenatal vitamin. Changed vitamins. End morning sickness (for me anyhow). That was my first experience with recognizing I had some food issues, though I had a doctor tell me when I was in my early 20s to lose the dairy products. I scoffed, mostly not wanting too. I was diagnosed with COPD at 28. It's been 5-10 years now they say I no longer have COPD. emoticon Nice to meet y'all.

PS- I also don't drink coffee (occasional Starbucks DECAF latte w/soy milk), don't do caffeine, don't drink fruit juice except fresh squeezed (LS Spicy Hot V8 3 meals a day), don't drink soda & suck on a water bottle all day. I don't eat much red meat, love seafood, chicken periodically. Reading the foods to eliminate, I don't have to change anything. I replaced my sugar addiction with an addiction for fresh fruit, which I allow myself unlimited amounts of.

I'm Lizzi, i have Sjogren's and (R?)Arthritis in my hands and feet(so far, haha) and for the most part i'm interested in any info anyone may have about your experiences using diet to help the drying of one's membranes, etc.. seems even when i get lots of water in, all that happens is that it goes right thru me, wah.

I cheer myself up by working with a friend at his kennel; he raises a small type of schnauzer, and the puppies are ADORABLE, of course, lol ! ALways helps me smile!

I'm going later this week to have plugs put into some part of my eyes to help keep them hydrated.. i'm not really sure how that can work, but i'm sure the doc will explain it to me.

i also find that my depression and my sjogrens tend to trigger each other; does that happen with other autoimmune/inflammatory conditions?

Welcome to my page and Please! feel free to comment on it; i try to keep my pictures happy and silly so i'm cheered up and hopefully anyone who visits is cheered up, too.
