My oldest niece use to raise Dobermans. She never married, never wanted to, and surely never wanted kids. Rugrats she called them. Her dogs were her kids. She even wrapped Christmas present to her Mom and to Great Gram from the dogs. When she moved to the country she had baby goats, snakes(yuck), rabbits cats, you name it. I found a stray cat that had kittens in the garage where I live. My landlord wanted me to take them and the mother to the park and drown them. I cried and told her no, I would take her to the park and drown her though. I called my friend to see if she would take them, but she couldn't. She however, called the police. They came knocking on my door saying it was against the law to drown the kittens. I told them it was my landlord who wanted me to do it. They went downstairs and told them if they found dead kittens, they would arrest them. I got to keep the kittens until they were 6 weeks old and my niece finally had me gather them up and bring them to her with Mama. She kept the mother, renamed her Sunshine because she loved laying in the sun and kept the playful kitten that I love. Black Jack. The rest she gave away to people she knew that would take care of them. Black Jack is still living with her. Sunshine was an outdoor cat and was swooped up by a hawk or taken by a coyote. She doesn't know which for sure. She got another kitten but Jack would not allow it. That is his house and no other cats are allowed. She does have 6 dogs though. Jack tolerates them.

I was allergic to those kittens but didn't care. I fed them and the Mama finally trusted me and I would take them and sit on the lawn and play with them Jack the playful one would run up my arm and sit on my neck. I would take him down being allergic and he would do it again. To this day he loves lying on my nieces neck. He also loves taking showers with her. Usually cats hate water, not Jack. When you are expecting you date and are in the shower and are yelling Jack don't do that and you date walks in the house to sit in the living room, what is he suppose to think?????

I totally LOL'd at "Presidential Cats"! My mom always had a strict "no stupid pet names" rule so all of our pets growing up had people names. I've had two cats named after characters from books: Audra (from Stephen King's IT) and we currently have a Simi (Sherrilyn Kenynon's Dark Hunter series).

That's funny! We have "Presidential Cats" because the first two we adopted (George & Laura) already had those names. Then we got Ronald and Marbles - their names were Digit and Marbles. We didn't like digit so decided to go with the Presidential theme, but kept marbles because it's funny to just have one without a people name. When we got the kitten, his name was Ho-Ho, so back to the presidents for him!

my mom has 3 Bostons: Tag, the oldest, Giada de Laurentiis, and PALIN, Bingley's sister. Named after Sarah Palin. I don't know why.

Ha! The Husband and I have two cats and they're definitely our kids. My mom even refers to them as her grandcats.

Exactly! My husband tells people we have 5 kids all the time! When they ask more he says,

"Well The oldest is almost 6, the little girl is four, The twins are two and a half, and the baby is almost a year."

Oh what are their names?

"George, Laura, Ronald, Marbles, and Abraham, Linc for short."

Nice! Wait, what? Marbles?!?

"Did I mention they are cats?"

Lol.

And yes, they are named after presidents. Well, except Marbles.

Nice to find like-minded animal lovers! I've been teased about my love for Vivi since we rescued her. Not my problem and I honeslty feel sorry for people that don't understand the deep love and bond you can share with an animal. We don't refer to her as a pet. She is family. emoticon

Yay Nikki! Looks like you're not alone in thinking of Vivi as your fur-baby. You know how I feel about Bingley. emoticon

Hi Nikki and others. I am Bonnie. I can't have pets. emoticon At the age of 12 I developed allergies. How do you all of a sudden develop an allergy. I spent my summers on a dairy farm in VT and was rushed to the hospital because of the allergies. I could never go back. I had my own horse for the summer and did work the farm, waking up at 4 every morning. I was not what you called domestic and didn't want to stay home. I saw calves and ponies being born and like my cousin Gary said shoveled sh*t. I do love animals though and I get quite angry when I see people abuse them. I watched Animal Cops on Animal Planet and couldn't watch it anymore because it upset me too much. It is just like a baby being abused. DISGUSTING. They should be locked up and the key thrown away. I can't watch commercials for the ASPCA, I have to change the channel. It gets me upset because I really want a pet and can't have one and someone has one and abuses it. That isn't fair. I can have a dog with hair not fur. I play with my sister's dog, throwing the ball, I just can't pet her. That hurts. Pets are your children, in some ways the best children you can have, they love unconditionally, don't ask for money, the car keys, okay yeah they do get into trouble. That's why they are like kids right?

Nice to meet you.

You're definitely not the only one who sees their dog as a fur baby. I have a 9 year old Basset step-puppy.
