I was diagnosed with Type II diaetes 2 years ago when I was hospitalized for bronchitis. I'm insulin dependent but have worked very hard to get my numbers under control through diet. I'm 60 years old and quite frankly my health issues are starting to resemble a whack-a-mole exercise, just when I get one issue addressed, something new surfaces.

Bottom line is that I got my A1C down from 12.1 to 5.8 in 2 years through working with a nutritionist and using SparkPeople. Then I reduced my insulin with the supervision of my endocrinologist through eating whole foods and even lost 40 lbs and am currently considered "controlled" and not using insulin (but keep my prescription current in case the numbers start swinging the wrong way) and doing well in 'maintenance' status.

I recently quit smoking (47 years of smoking) and I can feel the weight gain, water retention, and feel my control just slipping away.Hoping that engaging with others that have the challenges that diabetes adds to an aging metabolism will help me stay motivated and not trade one bad habit (smoking) for another (unhealthy/uncontrolled snacking.)

*Where there's smoke, there's fire.
Where there's fire, there's light.
Where there's light, there's hope.
I SMELL SMOKE!!*

Hi everyone! I am new to the group but not new to diabetes. I was diagnosed a few years ago, but just recently have been trying to get better control. I think I was in denial about having it. The results of my last blood work was enough to scare me into changing. I am now testing everyday and for the past 3 weeks I have been changing my eating habits. I am excited to see what this group has to offer :)

I am Kay. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2006 when I had a heart attack. I use Metformin to keep it controlled. My last A1C was 5.8 in September. This is Day one of challenge for me.

Hi All,
I am new to this challenge on Day 2. I am controlling my diabetes with carb counting, walking, & 1 metformin 500 taken daily at or after supper. My challenge is that very few diabetics I know use carb counting to control diabetes so I feel alone & needing more support. I also have diabetic relatives who are not controlling their diabetes well who keep offering me sugary pastries etc. at holiday meals and parties. They are not happy when I decline the extra helping of stuffing, pie, cake, & alcoholic drinks. Looking for support & tips on how to get through the holidays. I used to weigh 193, now weigh 149 & my goal set by my doctor is to weigh 127.

I'm trying to keep the words - pre-diabetic from going to diabetics & hoping this will help me. I have changed the meal plan to the one for diabetics, to try & help me learn what it means.

Welcome to the Journey!
My best advice: get yourself a referral to a Diabetes Educator, a Registered Dietician, or at the very least group classes!! Working one-on-one is the best way to learn what can change for You...

Next best advice: if you haven't been tracking what you are eating, start using the Nutrition Tracker here on Spark. And if you can, use it to pre-plan your day....then ahead of time, you can monitor how many carbs you will be eating, and change portion sizes or the food if need be. (you can always modify or delete later...!)

Next best advice: sign on to the Diabetic Plan in the Nutrition Tracker and turn on their meal plans. You *don't* have to eat exactly as written...but you want to follow the overall balance of limiting Carbs per meal, and including Protein and healthy Fats. Limiting the amount of Carbs eaten at one time will do wonders in decreasing your blood sugar.

It is a Journey of Making Better Choices....don't hold yourself to perfection....but Plan, be Patient, and Persevere! Many others have succeeded in getting their situation in control...and You Can Also!!

Good Morning. I'm new to diabetes, and I'm learning a lot about it. I am trying to avoid having to take medicine, so I'm changing my diet and I'm exercising every day. I know it's not going to be easy, but I'm going to do this!
If anyone has advice, I would be very happy to hear it.

I've decided its time for me to learn what's new in this world of Diabetes....and see if I can adopt some more changes to keep me from someday needing medication. My adult son was recently diagnosed and I'm working on him to get online here as well...or at least be able to correctly influence him.

I was diagnosed with Pre-diabetes in 2007; worked with a Dietician to lose some 20lbs (which have stayed off--thankfully) and was able to get my FBG and A1C to acceptable (but high end of normal) levels. But I know I will do better if I lose some more weight!! This Journey will be more difficult as I get older, both to lose and to not convert to T2D.... so I figure NOW is the time to get my act together!

I'm 64, 5'2", and currently 149lbs. I'd like to see that drop to about 140lbs before my 65th Birthday!

Hi.
I'm Doris. I was diagnosed with Type 2 in 2002. I had good success losing weight and getting my diabetes under exceptional control. Then I had some health problems and several stressful situations over several years that have led to me regaining many pounds, which in turn led to me having to go on medication.

I want to get off my medication and the way to do that is to lose the weight.

I hope to find the support and motivation in this challenge group.

Thanks.

Doris

Hello. I'm Lisa and I have prediabetes. I'm hoping that I can lose enough weight by the time I go back to the doctor for my next checkup that my 'numbers' are still within a decent range. Then, I just need to keep up my weight loss!

Hi,
My name is Joy, I am type 2 diabetic controlled. I am 33 pounds over weight, was 53 pounds over weight. I believe I will have better control when I lose this extra 33 pounds. I have already been able to stop one of my blood pressure pills and my blood pressure stays right at 108/ 66. I do feel better and know when I drop this extra weight it will do me a world of good.
You can and will do it Sandy. emoticon

I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic. My Doctor said it is controlled. I have not had healthy eating habits for several years and gained a lot of weight. At five foot 1 inch I gained up to 183 pounds. I contribute the type 2 diabetic to weight gain and poor diet. So does my Doctor. I have over the course of 3 months changed my diet and have lost 21 pounds. How ever I have 32 pounds yet to lose.

Hi! I was just Dx with diabetes type 2 about 2 weeks ago. I've been monitoring my BS before every meal and at bedtime. My doctor prescribed Metformin ER 500mg daily. I have a follow up appointment today and I'm going to let Dr know that I'm stopping the medication and work on controlling my BS with diet & exercise. I know coming back to SP will help me with that. emoticon emoticon

Hello, everybody!

I'm pre-diabetic (the 'gray zone' as my doctor said once) and would like to not advance into diabetes. My A1C was good during my last visit, but he did remind me to lose weight (duh!). I've put off going back for a checkup for about 9 months and gained weight during that time. I have lost some and gained some, but since I just realized that I won't be able to put off going back for a checkup more than three more months (I'll need to go back before I can get BP medicine prescription renewed) I need to get busy. I'm going to work extremely hard to see how much weight I can lose between now and the end of December. I figure that if i can do well with the holidays looming in the near future, I can do anything!

I'm Carol and 70 yrs. old. I've been diagnosed with diabetes since I was 50. So I'm thinking that I'm just tired of "paying attention." I struggle with food, not that I eat too many unhealthy things, but too much of even a good thing is not good. Anyway, I am morbidly obese and waffle. I lose a little weight, then lose interest and gain it back. The exercise "thing" is an ongoing fight with myself. It's not that I don't have time (being retired) I just can't get myself to do any. Well, today I've been getting up to do some housework about every 15 min. (at the commercials). But who knows if I'll do the same tomorrow. Ugh! that's enough of an intro.
I AM hoping that this challenge will motivate me and in a month I'll have formed new healthy habits. My goal is to do the daily assignments. That's enough for now, I think. I'll need all your prayers for success and an uplift of my attitude. Thanks all.

Hi everyone. I am pre-diabetic. Diabetes runs in my family and I've seen what it can do to you. My goal is to get my health on track so I don't become fully diagnosed with diabetes. I keep myself motivated by joining Challenges to help me along the way and to stay on track as much as possible. My goal is to beat this and improve my health in the process. emoticon

My name is Gene and I was diagnosed in 1996. Diet only worked for a while, then I got complacent and reverted back to my old ways. I now take 3 oral meds in the morning and 2 at night. Since joining and paying attention, I have cut my Actos and Glipizide in half in only a short time. Also anyone with type 2 should read the book "Wheat Belly" by Dr. William King.

Hi, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes over 10 years ago and kept tight control of it until the Dr placed me on prednisone for another health problem. I gained a lot of weight and became insulin dependent. I need to lose weight, but I'm more concerned about how out of control the diabetes is.

Hi All,

My name is Alva. I was diagnosed with Type 2 in April of 2014. Did well in the beginning with changing my lifestyle and lost about 30 pounds. Since then I have had a change in job and family challenges. Gained back the weight and not so pleased with my setback. Celebrated my 49th birthday yesterday and decided that today begins the year for me. My goal is to loose 90 pounds, come off of some of the meds I have to currently take, and live a healthier life and above all find me again. I have used SparkPeople in the past to only track info. This time I hope to utilize the community support so that I can stay on track and meet my goals. Looking forward to the support.

Hi, I'm Sharon
After being diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic last fall, I worked very hard to lose 50 lbs over the winter so I would not have to go on meds. I was able to drop my A1C from 7.8 to 5.3. But after my 6 month check up, I began to go off track and have gained 6-8 lbs back. I go to the doctor this week again and I'm very nervous that he will put me on meds. So my goal with this challenge is to get back to following my diabetic food plan and walking as I know it works!

I am Carol, 65 and diabetic for over 10 years. I had my Gastric Bypass Surgery on 12/17/2012 and have lost 180 pounds and when I left the hospital I was no longer on diabetic meds. My sugars are running good. Just a bit of a problem at work as I find my sugars dropping around 4 am. I work the night shift at the hospital on a busy Cardiac floor.

Hi all! I'm Brenda, 62, diabetic for 10 years now and very poorly controlled. Lack of action on my part. I had a heart attack last year, (June)... triglycerides were 1800. I was put on insulin at the hospital but due to no insurance and high cost, I've only had the first five pack of Lantus pens and no insulin in more than a year now. I lost my Doctor when he went to the MDVIP program and cut his practice to 300 patients, who could pay the high fee to remain in the system...healthcare reform and all that emoticon

BUT....I see a new Dr. Wednesday, hooya...and am praying I can get some help with the insulin. My FBS runs between 220 and 350 and I must get this under control if I want to be able to function. I must get ME under control! I know better and I need to act like it.

Blessings to all on this team, doing the challenge and taking strides in improving your health. I am SO thankful for SP...it's a lifeline for me. emoticon

In all things, I will acknowledge Christ, my Savior and strength of my life.
Brenda (Bren)

Hi, I am Sandra. I am diabetic and have had bariatric surgery May 18, 2015. I have lost over 50 pounds and have been taken off blood sugar medications. However, I am having complications with low pulse and may have to have a pace maker.

Hi, I am a 53 year old woman and have been diabetic for 10 years. I take medication for it but I have been exercising more and watching my calories. Because of this, my doctor adjusted the medication at my last visit and told me we may be able to stop it with my next visit. I go back in 3 months. I hope to lose about 10 more pounds. For this challenge, I will be happy if I lose 5 of the ten over the 31 days. I look forward to meeting you all and I hope to offer some support.

Hi, my name is Miller. I'm a 61 yr. old woman with pre-diabetes. I have chronic depression, recurrent major depressive episodes, and OCD. It's very hard to feel hopeful and stay motivated when battling these disorders, but I keep trying. I'm looking forward to this Challenge and the good changes it may help me bring about.

Hello, my name is Sandra. I have been diabetic for 15 years and on insulin for 10.

I am working hard at food tracking and carb reduction. Since my Dr changed my insulin usage to align with carb usage, it has forced me to track and be more aware. I am seeing drastic changes in my blood sugars and actually losing some weight. My next step is to get in my correct calorie range.

I exercise 55 - 60 minutes a day / 6 days a week on my stationary bike with some intermittent work done using the Wii Fit.

Looking forward to hearing other's stories so we can journey to our best health together.
