I'm Diabetic and horrible right now. A1C was 9.3 and i expect it to be higher in my doc visit next week. Im pretty depressed because of my living situation and find myself eating constantly carbs and sugar make me feel better (so it seems) their long term effects are killing me. Im almost to my largest weight and i decided to try something different. I hired a personal trainer with the $$ i saved from quitting smoking and here i am. Wish me luck and i hope all the best for all here ...renee

I try to keep a diary of what I eat, especially calories, carbs and sugars. Has the Doctor checked your A1C to make sure you are not diabetic or pre-diabetic. I found out that it runs on both sides of my family.. Mine was picked up when I landed in the hospital and the meter peaked at over 800. This surprised me because I had no symptoms. Since I rejoined Spark People this past week my daily Blood Sugars have gone down to 125, My last A1C was. 6.0. I have it checked again the middle of June. Good Luck. Remember what you eat weight control and exercise is good for you Spark People has a chart to help you keep track. .

Hi, I'm not a diabetic. I have a fear of becoming one if I don't get control of my weight.

I want to become more aware of diabetes.

I'm hoping to get control on my eating, portions size, the big think, better carb management.

I have a son that is a type 1 diabetic, so I am somewhat familiar with carbs. But he is 21 and controls his own diet.

Any advice please send it to me. Thanks

Hi everyone! I am in my 30's from Michigan. I've lost over 100 lbs. before before the PTSD. My blood sugars forced me to wake up and try to save my own life again but i am still struggling a lot. I'm hoping that being on SP will help me stay motivated as it did in the past. Being on teams with supportive friendly people makes everything fun and a lot easier.

I am prediabetic. Have high blood sugar, high cholesterol, am overweight. I am on a low carb. Diet. Since february 9th. Since my hysterectomy in 2004, I have had problems. I'm on the right track now. I have lost some weight, working with a dietician thru my old job. I no longer work, due to debilitating knee, shoulder, neck and spine degenerative problems.

Hi. I was diagnosed with diabetes late last year. I promised myself and my doctor that I would take it seriously. I didn't. I've had some problems because of that. I'm ready to take this seriously. My goals are to lose 10 lbs and lower my blood sugar.

Cultivate motivation.

I am doing the challenge as my A1C is 8.2. I need to get it back under 7. I am a Type 1 Diabetic that is also Gluten Intolerant. My blood sugars especially high in the morning. I am terrified of taking to much insulin and going to low while I'm sleeping. I have to get over that fear and take insulin as ordered. I am on Medicare and cannot always afford my Insulin. Working to keep it in supply. I want to prevent complications. Following a diabetic diet that is also GF has proven to be a true challenge. I want to get my Nutrition set and exercise more. Due to back & neck surgeries and fusions I am limited in mobility. Doing PT right now for Plantarfacitis and Tendonosis. Working hard to get mobility I have back to normal for me. Going to take full advantage of the opportunity this challenge gives me.

i joined once long ago, and like everything else connected to my diabetes i did not follow through. That has been my way since i was diagnosed about 15 years ago. I have been playing the head in the sand, if i don't admit it it is not so and will all just go away game way to long. has been months since i have taken my medication; not because i can't afford it, i have good insurance. Just living in la la land i guess. Then two weeks ago something clicked, and husband and i have been going to the gym daily. I admit i am not doing alot, walking on elliptical for mile a day. That's it. averaging 3000 steps a day. i was working for about a year walking 2 miles a day, but that ended in March and i have gone back to my do nothing life style. So for me to do a mile a day is good. I have a bad foot, not sure what is wrong exactly since that would require going to dr and that would mean admitting have not been following through.... a catch 22. After walking more then half mile, my heel is killing me, and barely able to put weight on nit when i stand. Once walking it will start to feel little better but still painful. But back to why am here...sorry. I decided time to face facts and went had blood work up done. called dr today to make appt for physical and get new meds. For two weeks have been watching what i eat, going to the gym 6 days a week. I called this morning and made an appt for the dr for physical. Could not get in until June 8th, so was going to call back and make one for early next week. Few hours later his nurse called me saying he wants to see me ASAP about blood work and "to set up new treatments" Have to admit, i am scared. Last time i went he had mentioned some problems with the kidneys, still was not enough to make me take notice. This time....i am noticing. i am worrying. Assuming he will put me on insulin. Don't like it but this time...whatever i need to do am going to do it. so here i am back again, will start day 1 of the challenge tomorrow. guess everything begins tomorrow. Am curious ...do people who start insulin ever get off? i have heard from so many that once you start, that is it. never go back to just pills or to no meds needed. sorry this is so long. Think for first time it has finally sunk in. i feel like an alcoholic at their first meeting....hi i'm morning sun and i'm a diabetic. steps from her podium and takes a seat.

Hi Everyone...I have just been diagnosed as diabetic (a diet controlled diabetic). I have had FG results climbing for about a year. My doctor said you need to get your sugar under control. But he didn't tell me how other than eat less bread, lose a few pounds. But my A1C was 6.91. I had seen him a month earlier. Since that time I lost 14 pounds and started taking my FG reading myself. Just wish he had told all the things he told me yesterday 6 months ago. He wanted to put me on meds but I said let me continue with my weight loss and eating changes. So any help... encouragement will be appreciated.

Hi, I also was diagnosed 7 - 10 years ago and have always found it difficult to get things under control. I guess I originally thought i could just have medication take care of it and still have my usual lifestyle. As I have gotten older I have realized that I want to get off the meds (they just increase) and lose the weight and change the lifestyle. For several years I have been in the high 7's to 9 with my A1C and I want to get it into the 6's or lower.

I've been fluctuating between 208 and 230 for quite some time and I have to say since joining this and getting the motivation from everyone I have hit 207 today. i liked the idea about setting small goals, so my next goal is 205. Thanks for the help so far.

Keep up the good work!

Hi, I was diagnosed about 10 years ago, I weighed almost 250, lost over pounds got down to 189, my A1C was 10.1, got it down to 6.1, kept the weight off for over a year but it gradually starting creeping up, now I am at 209 and my A1C is at 7.7. I lost the weight through the low carb diet, which I have since fallen off that diet. I need to get back on that diet again and sticking to it again, but it is harder this time. I need help!!

I have been going to planet fitness and working out on different machines and also riding a bike anywhere from 3 to 8 miles a time.

Hi i rejoined this challenge, as a health scare made me realize I truly need to get serious about getting my blood sugar under control. I am mid week on phase 1 of Atkins, alot to learn it has not been perfect, but I am learning every day.

My goal for this challenge is to embrace the change I need to make in my life, and just do it one step at a time.

Hello,

I'm new to this challenge. I haven't been diagnosed with diabetes, but my Dad's side of the family has it and my PCP told me to watch my carbs so I thought this challenge would help me get on the right track. I have 50 pds to lose and I want to be accountable for what I put in my body going forward.

Hello!

My name is Karen. I was recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes and have been overwhelmed with all I have to learn and manage. Meal planning is nothing I have ever been good at and I am realizing it is a very important part of my success. I am encouraged that by following a diet that is good for managing my diabetes that I will lose the weight I have needed to and the pain in my knees will decrease and I can be more active. Also I need to learn more about the connection between what I do and the fluctuations in my blood sugars. Looking forward to support from others.

If I can dream it I can do it.

Hi Everyone!

I'm rejoining SP and plan to kick my lifestyle into healthy gear! I'm pre-diabetic and want to keep it that way a long as possible.

I'm about to turn 39 and want to have a healthier life ahead of me :) My husband is on board and also trying to get healthier. We want to be around for our almost 4-year-old for a long long time.

Hope to make some friends along the journey!

Good morning
My name is Kathy.I live in sunny south Florida I am eager to lose weight. I have lost a couple of pounds recently and I need someone to buddy up with me to keep me on track and to keep me motivated. Started out at 205, now 197.I do have diabetes and take Metformin for it. My numbers range from 211 to 277. Very rarely does it go over 300 or less than 200. I am active at Planet Fitness and I use a Fitbit. I am pumped to lose weight.
Anybody want to be my pal?

Starting again is rough. I gained weight while recovering from an accident that took two years of rehab. My husband and I are both type 2 diabetics. Genetically it was a given that we would be diabetics if we didn't watch what we ate - we didn't, so here I am. I have knowledge, I have desire, but the ability to stick with it every day is where I struggle. I'm working on creating menus to make grocery shopping easier. I need all the help I can get.

Hello, I'm Sarah. I am on a weight loss journey, but I am not diabetic. My Mom is type 2 and my husband is type 1 so I was hoping this challenge would give me more insight to helping them, possibly help me from becoming diabetic and maybe lose a little weight along the way.

My husband is still a "new" diabetic and is struggling with keeping his blood sugar level. Lots of highs and crashes after shots. I'd really like to help him figure out how to stay more level.

Hi, I've been around since 2008. I've had some ups and downs through the years. Last year I lost 42 pounds, mostly by 'leaving a little on my plate. Sticking near my calorie allotment and drinking tons of water. I've been sick for almost a month - I have COPD, type 2 and have been on metformin for a few years ago. Today is day 9 of not smoking. I learned yesterday I've had a heart attack sometime in the past and today I learned my little sister and family have about 3 weeks to find a place. Hard choice not to go get a pack of smokes but thought I'd find a new challenge instead :) Had blood drawn yesterday so waiting to hear what my AC1 is.

Hi, I'm Christine. I'm 64 years old and I've been insulin resistant and pre-diabetic for several years. My doctor put me on Metformin, but it gave me such a tummy ache that after several weeks I finally quit taking it. I found SP when I googled for calorie counters, and I'm currently on day 16. There's so much on this web site that I'm continuously finding new tools and support. Just tracking my eating has helped tremendously; I'm down 6 pounds in 16 days. I'd like to lose 60, but instead of going crazy like I usually do, I'm trying the "slow and steady" method (something I've never been good at!)

Hi Carol,
Just a word on the mini trampoline, I would suggest trying one out before you purchase.
I have Fibro, the muscles don't recover as quickly as they should, and the mini trampoline gives me excruciating pains up my lower legs. I am able to walk 2 miles, but the un-steadiness of the surface of the trampoline requires a great deal of balancing with all of the small feet and leg muscles.
Suggestion: Tony Horton's Gazelle Glider is easy and you can work out as easy or hard as you want without lifting your feet.

I am Carol and been on this team a few days. I started my new way of life Jan. 1 and have not had any added sugars. I am reading labels, & gave up diet coke. I have been a diabetic for about 20 years and was on metformin. My A1C ran 6 and 6.5 for years. This past six months it has crept up to 8.9 so now it's time to do what I should have been doing all along. I have lost weight over the years as in 1997 I weighed 260 and I am 5'3. I weighed about 228 when I had a quad bypass & mitral valve replacement in 2009. After that I lost down to 160 lbs & maintained that until my husband retired two years ago and we both gained weight. . Now I weigh 182 and my next weigh in is Sunday. My husband is doing this with me and is really doing good. He lost 6 lbs the first week. In Oct. 2015 I had 3 stents and having stents after heart bypass is really scary.... I only mention all these health issues so u can see why I am so motivated to keep on track.
I have 4 grandchildren and want to be here as long as possible.

For me, giving up added sugar and reading all labels work. It reduces my hunger and makes it easier to choose healthier options. I also gave up diet coke and to think I haven't even had a sip in 13 days is amazing. I have substituted Life water and my favorite flavors are blood orange/mango and apple/pear. My favorite snack is garden triscuits spread with avacado and garlic salt.

I injured my knee and hip in September when I slammed the farm tractor into a tree. I need surgery but opted for an injection due to my heart issues. I haven't been able to exercise but am thinking of trying rebounding on the mini trampoline.

It is midnight and I sure am in a talkative mood. LOL Going to bed though. Best of luck to us all!

Hello everyone! This is my third day here and I'm loving it. I'm 56, divorced and over weight. It's just me now and I want to feel and look better about myself. Found this site just poking around some recipes on the net, joined and am feeling better already. Hopefully with this site and friends here to encourage me, I can get to the 110 lbs. that I should be.

I am like you, I have returned back to Sparkpeople because my weight has returned to obese for my height.. BMI 34 emoticon
Old woman - 93 kg. - Have been eating well but with large portions of food on my plate.
But the last 6 months I have been eating too much bread, potatoes, fried fish, hamburgers, lollies, chocolate biscuits etc etc ALONG with my meals!!! emoticon

Today is day one in this challenge. I shall begin by eating less and better. I shall begin to go for a walk, no matter how slow to start with. I am an intelligent woman, so why am I killing my body with overeating?? emoticon

I am type 2 diabetic with Hashimoto's Low Thyroid disease;.
I am recovering from cancer and the drugs and chemo have caused me to be fat in belly and back fat, leg fat. so my blood sugar levels were up in my 6 monthly fasting blood glucose test. I am back on Metformin.

Time for me to stop whinging to myself, as I am the one who puts the food in my mouth emoticon

I am back! Hello Sparkepeople, I have had 12 months of not feeling well, 10 months sick with breast cancer surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. I now have curly short hair regrowing. Before my hair was totally straight. I am still having problems with my weight, my treatment made me put on weight!! Now I just overeat the chips, chocolates and bread...I know, it is emotional eating again, again and again. I feel really guilty with myself afterwards. Hope anyone who reads this, is losing

I'm not quite sure if I'm replying correctly...but here it goes!

I'm "new again" to SP but glad to be back. I always get positive feelings with SP!
My blood sugar and BP have been steadily creeping up over the past several years and I'm determined to make a healthy change for myself and my family. It's time to reverse this trend! Looking forward to a healthier 2017!

I am new to this team. I have been with SP since 2007. My weight has been up and down and I am not consistent with this aspect of my life. I have been on the pre-diabetic course for at least 3 or 4 years now. My numbers keep going up. I come from a family of diabetics who learn too late and are on dialysis. I do not want any complications that come with diabetes, so I am here to help me understand the disease and to make my life better. I want to live a long life diabetes free.

I joined this team because I need to learn how to manage the pre-diabetic insulin roller-coaster.
I need to learn the proper foods to eat throughout the day to keep me level.
Thank you, all for being here.

Hi all,

I'm not officially diagnosed with diabetes yet but my numbers keep climbing and need to stop. So I'm trying to be proactive and get a grip on things. Weight has been a lifetime issue so I expect this to be an uphill battle. I'll need all the help I can get.

Hello everyone - My name is Ann and I am new to the group. I received a diabetes diagnosis on Friday. Had a feeling it was coming so it wasn't really a surprise. My A1C was 7. I'm thinking this is a blessing in disguise. I have an appointment next month to see the nutritionist and a diabetic educator.

PS: Could the moderator of the group please delete my "Newly Diagnosed" thread? I created a new topic rather than replying to the current.

I started back to Spark to give myself a jump start before the New Year. I started this challenge this evening. I do not have diabetes, but my husband does, he takes insulin, and I do not want to go down that road. Trying to get us on a healthier eating plan. I know, that Spark is a big help and I thought this challenge would be good for me.
