My husband and I did the hike about 20 years ago. Soooo glad we did. It is difficult - both ways. The way down is hard on your knees - so do work to strengthen/stretch all areas that connect there. We used hiking poles - that helped us both ways. The way up is a cardio challenge. Listen to your body and your hiking partner. Even though we did it in October, it was still hot. I bonked coming up and kept thinking I just needed to keep going - even though I was still several miles form the top. My husband had to sit me down and make me eat - I was drinking plenty. Then I was fine.

All this aside - it is wonderful. We loved it. I would recommend it to anyone. Just don't underestimate it.

I have never hiked. I am very active though...I am a runner & active at the gym. I do ST & Pilates. My grandson is a rock climber & runs. I do intend to train for the hike. I have been doing my research & understand all the practical concerns. I kayak & am aware I must have adequate energy for the return. I am aware it takes twice as long to get back on the trail. I am very excited & am looking forward to the adventure!

How much hiking do you do? That might help with specific recommendations.

My boyfriend and I hiked down to Phantom Ranch and up in a day, we are both very experienced hikers, and it was quite difficult, but also rewarding.

You will want lots of dress options, we were bundled up at the start of the hike, and practically naked at the bottom! (kidding, but just...) The temperatures can be that varied.

There are few places you can replenish water, so you'll need to bring plenty with you.

And remember, the down hill is easier, and you have to get back up what you hike down. Lots of rescues happen because folks aren't paying attention to this.

Most of all, take lots of pictures and enjoy the beauty! It's really a remarkable place!

Newbie here! I am planning a day hiking trip with my adult grandson to the Grand Canyon in May 2020. We will be doing the Bright Angel corridor. Any recommendations would be appreciated!
