Hi everyone. I just became a vegetarian at the beginning of this year (it was my new years resolution). Up until now I've still been consuming dairy (eggs, milk, cheese) and (very occasionally) seafood. But today I was reading about how cows were treated in dairies, and how egg-laying chickens were treated (even when "cage-free"). It just totally discouraged me! Here I am thinking that I'm doing a great job because I'm not eating meat, but yet I am still unconsciously supporting animal cruelty! And then there are the tricky foods (like marshmallows) that I think are ok, only to find out that they're not! I just feel so overwhelmed!!! I don't really know what to do: should I become vegan? Should I just give up? Or should I just keep doing what I'm doing? Has anybody else been through this dilemma?

Hi I am 11 years vegetarian aiming to go vegan. If I decrease my starch and carb intake I will be fine. My goal is to do just that and become a healthier vegetarian/vegan. Due to fibromyalgia my exercise regimen has changed and I have weight that I need to rid myself of.So eating better and becoming leaner will help.

Hello everyone! I've been a vegan for about 5 years and I was a vegetarian before that for about 12. I know how to eat really healthily, but disordered eating, emotional over eating and portion control are my mortal enemies and I've been overweight for longer than I'd care to admit to myself, so I'm hoping to change my patterns, as well as to keep myself a lot more motivated than I have been in the past.

I'm aiming for a healthy diet full of fruits, veggies and wholegrains and I'm not allowing myself to skip meals. Execise-wise, I'm keeping it fun, as I can be awful at sticking to exercise regimes when I'm uninterested in them, so lots of walking, cycling, yoga and bellydancing to get me started and I'll see where it takes me!

My goal weight is 140lbs, but I'm not going to be too strict about it, as I don't want to reply on a number on a scales; I'd rather go by how I feel than become obsessive, which I know I can be prone to doing.

Great to meet you all and I'm looking forward to getting involved here!

Hello there, I am Lisa and I want to be a RAW FOODIST...sound like a disease, but seriously, I love raw food, no aftertaste and very fulfilling... I feel at my best when on Raw(Uncooked) Food. I currently work overseas(on the Middle East) have busy life style and extensive travel's schedules and some level of stress... you name it, I often slip to vegetarian, vegan and sometimes sushi... Anyone who'd like to join me, to make/have a support group for all who love Raw Food and wish to explore this life style

Hello everyone. :)

I am thinking tomorrow is day 1 of my new Vegan lifestyle. After watching "Forks Over Knives" I feel my views on food have greatly changed and I am ready to adapt a newer and healthier lifestyle.

My children are 7 (this Sunday), 5 and 2. They will be living this lifestyle with me as well so that I can hopefully teach them the proper way to feed their body and have the nutrients they need daily.

Wish me luck and never fear passing along any meal ideas! :)

Hi everybody!

My wife and I have started an "anti-inflammatory" diet since August. It has been going well. Mostly fruits, vegetables and whole grains. I thought this group might give some encouragement and maybe some recipes. Glad to be here!

Hi. After some serious health issues, I have changed my eating to a vegan lifestyle. I have been at it since June and seem to be doing well enough - doing a lot of reading and research. The difficult part is that there are many carbs that I need to have only minimally. With that in mind, it is tough to get enough calories. That being said, I also have not lost much weight in the last 6 weeks. In an ideal world, I would still like to be down another 10 - 12 pounds and get toned. Any way, I think I am in this for the long run.

Hi, my name is Tina. I have been a vegetarian off and on for over a decade, but I believe I am ready for full time, mainly due to some personal journies. This is my third go around on spark people and pray it's not like the other two.

Hi, my name is Lindsey and I have been a vegetarian for 18 years and a vegan for 8. I am also a graduate student and am working on my dissertation- therefore I am sitting A LOT and stressed out so my weight keeps creeping up. I am excited to be a part of this forum and can answer a lot of questions people might have about veganism as I am well informed about it :)

Hello
7-yr vegetarian starting on a new journey for better health and diet.
When my boyfriend and I met almost a year ago, some of his eating habits started to rub off on me; I became a pescatarian (vegetarian eating seafood sometimes).
I've run into some health issues causing me to have rapid weight gain and now have to 'revamp' my diet and get back to the vegetarian basics.
Even at my healthiest, I've always had a few pounds I wanted to lose and don't ever strive to be a size 6 or anything, but my goal weight is now almost 85 lbs away!
I'm determined to get there! Slow and steady, back to healthy eating and regular exercise.

Swimming is what saved me. Try water aerobics, as well. You do not need to know how to swim to do water aerobics and there is often a reduced rate for Seniors. Another good thing....walk. Even if you can only make it to the corner and back. Try the morning, as soon as you get up. Make it a personal private time. (although I turn the coffee pot on before I head out the door!). Plan your meals at least the day before...eliminates tempation. DO NOT EAT OUT for the first couple of weeks....give yourself time to adjust.

Hey everyone! I am looking for some advice. I am considering going vegetarian as a way to incorporate more veggies into my diet. I'm going to try it for at least 30days hopefully more. I dont really eat that much meat right now but I love chicken. What would be the best way to ease into a vegetarian diet? And does anyone have some recipes? I would be cooking only for me since my boyfriend is a cheeseburger a day guy. Thanks for the help!

Welcome, GO4IT! I recommend purchasing a couple good vegetarian or vegan recipe books. I love every book by author Molly Katzen (vegetarian books). She's very creative and her recipes are full of flavor. Also, if you don't mind the language, for vegans, I love the Skinny Bitch series of books.

Can you get to a swimming pool??? Best exercise for limited mobility...when I was 350 lbs, and was sick for a couple of years my mobility was down and my muscles are still very stiff. My neurologist suggested swimming. It was easy at first, but now I can do about a half an hour. I got a scholarship at the local JCC to go swimming at a lower rate also.

Beverly,

You can ask me any questions to a simple, and healthy vegan diet. I guess part of my reasoning for going Vegan was because I felt an addiction to sweets, and animal products, especially dairy.

I've been a vegetarian for over 18 years. I do eat dairy, eggs and occassionally fish, but no meat at all. I can't say I was hugely driven by morals or principles (although some of the treatment of animals for food is disgusting) but more by a natural inclination. My Mum is vegetarian and was since I can remember. My sister turned veggie when she was about 12 and I made the choice when I was 17. In all honesty, I never liked meat much anyway. I used to get in to trouble when I was about 3 or 4 for disecting my sausages because I just couldn't stand all the wobbly bits and was deeply suspicious of each mouthful! I have never found it difficult to cook myself nice veggie food but eating out was a problem when I was younger. Happily most places in the UK have realised that they have to keep the veggies happy so there are now more choices out there. As a good Scot, one of my favourites is veggie haggis - but I haven't added that into my calories yet. Tonight will be the first time and I have a horrible feeling its going to come in quite high on the carbs.

Hi! I've been vegetarian for almost 2 years now, but I've definitely had a hard time losing weight on a plant based diet. In the last six months, I've only lost 11 lbs, despite major increases in activity. Oddly, I lost more weight with no activity. :( I'm also tired of spending money on programs that don't work and don't know what to do with vegetarians, so when I heard about SparkPeople, I thought I'd give it a try.

Hi,
I am new and not a vegan yet. I still eat fish and use eggs. I want being a vegan apart of my lifestyle change. What has prevent me in being a vegan is difficulty in figuring out how to prepare balance meal so as to maintain a balance diet and it not costing an arm and a leg.

So i hope that in joining this group i will get help/advice to achieve and maintain this goal.

Hello,
My name is Debra. I have wanted to be a Vegan for a long time. I have digestive issues from eating Pa. Dutch all my live. I started my Vegan journey in Feb. 2012. I love it and am doing great. My husband does not fully understand and if he cooks for me; he may mix something in I do not want in my food. My high was 350 lbs., I am down 140 lbs. and have a ways to go. I do not feel I am dieting. I think of it as changing my life style.

Welcome! I'm comparatively new to the group, too, and have just switched to vegan - but am also really making the effort to not eat processed food, even if it's vegan. Getting there! And yes, it's frustrating to still have weight issues when eating healthy, but I can pretty much overeat anything. As for your nay-saying friends & relatives, I turned to my companion who was sneering/sheeshing over what I was eating the other day and said, "You know, I'm not criticizing what you're eating." It actually stopped him. I think it's at the heart of their comments. They take our food choices as a judgment on what they're eating, and they act defensively. It's still not going to stop them, most likely, but at least you can rest assured it's definitely THEM and not you.

And I just LOL at the idea that vegetarians are what's wrong with the world!! Love it! In a sick sort of way, of course.....

Some people think the “plant-based whole foods diet” is extreme. Half a million a year will have their chests opened up and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme.

Hello, I'm new to the group and to sparkpeople. I've been a vegetarian since the first day of 2012 midnight actually. It's been rough here and there avoiding the traps, I work at a subway and I make alot of meat sandwiches and I can get a freeby whenever I want. I just have a veggie or a veggie patty instead. My father hates vegetarians and I live with him. He thinks vegetarians are "whats wrong with the world." My boyfriend is a meat eater too. Getting a portion of our dinners to just be veggie is hard at times but I'll just eat side dishes rather than give in to the nagging. I'm offered meat on a daily basis and it's gotten easier and easier to just say no. I'm to a point where when I smell meat cooking I think about how animals are treated in factory farms til I feel ill. I dont try to push my vegetarianism on others, even though almost daily I'm bothered about my decision.

I havent lost a pound since I became a vegetarian. It was never the meat that made me fat it's the calories, carbs, sugars and lack of physical activity and I think stress too. I would like to adopt a more plant based diet and I hope being in this group will encourage me to keep on truckin so to speak.

Hi everyone! I have been following a plant based whole foods diet for over a year now, and a member of Spark People for about that long as well.

I wanted to tell you all that a while back, I started a Facebook page which journals everything I am eating daily, on a meal-by-meal basis. I got so tired of sounding negative and telling people all the things I COULDN"T have, and wanted to show them all the wonderful amazing things I CAN (and DO!) have. So, I started this page:
https://www.facebook.com/jensjourneytohe
alth?ref=hl If you "LIKE" the page on FB, it will stream across your facebook page, and you can follow along easily that way.

I try to photograph everything, and capture most of it in pictures. It's been fun for me to come up with different recipes and meals, to show the world all that is possible. :) Some days, it's pretty straightforward (like my banana for breakfast today!). Other days, it's much more adventurous and exotic!

Eat well everyone.

Hello! I'm Allison. I'm a vegan, been one for a year and was vegetarian for 3 or 4 years prior to the transition. I was eating fish and eggs but only on rare occasions which made the transition easier. I joined this community to get fresh ideas and advice on weight loss since I seem to have reached a plateau:(. I am very active, I run 5-7 times a week and workout at home with the 30 day shred from Jillian pretty much nightly as well. I think I have been not eating enough and consuming too many carbs. I took the plunge with my lifestyle change and have already lost 40 pounds, just trying to get the last 20 off has been killer! Hope this community and spark people will help me past this plateau.

I've been a vegetarian for 22 years, almost a vegan - haven't quite cut out eggs yet as I do a Greek egg white omelette most Sunday mornings. Even after that, I've got some bad habits to get rid of, as I have many unwanted pounds. Hoping Spark will help give me the push I need.

ok - I 'fell off the wagon'... summer is just the worst time of year for me!! All the kids home... and the busy, hot days sort of discourage cooking. Used Spark People before to lose weight... Since then I HAD switched to a mostly vegan diet. Now the the kids are in school, I have a little more time t organize and focus...

Re-re-introduction. I joined this team a few days, then decided I shouldn't be on the team, but have decided to join again.

Over the year I have been returning to my decades long roots as an ovo-lacto vegetarian with a casual leaning to flexitarian/omnivore now and then.In other words,

I do eat chicken and beef now and then, actually had a chicken meal at a restaurant twice in the past three weeks, ate only half each time, although it tasted good.

I eat fish but have decided it is not a huge part of my diet and I may or may not continue doing that.

I am always open and present for myself in exploring new and old paths and in reversing my decision. Part of me still contemplates going paleo, but I doubt it.

I do not aspire to be vegan, have "tried" it in the past, toyed with the thought. It is not who I am.

I noticed from the team description that "just those interested in a cruelty free lifestyle" are welcomed and all approaches to vegetarianism seem to be welcomed, so happy to meet you all.

Hello! I am new to SP.
I was a vegan for 10 years, then fell off the wagon and started eating meat after my son was born. He is 14 now. I have been vegetarian on and off since then, and now trying to stick with it. (Only fish in the past few years.)
I am close to the heaviest that I have ever been and I know with the right eating plan for me, exercise, and support I will get to my goal.

Hello - I'm brand-new to SparkPeople, but have been a vegetarian since 1990 (I always say I'm the world's fattest vegetarian). Living a vegetarian lifestyle because of my love for animals is not without its challenges, which is why I'm here...looking forward to the meal ideas!

Hey, I'm LaDonna and I've only been vegetarian since May 2012. I've struggled with what to eat and sadly added more unhealthy food to my diet to replace the meat. I really think the meal plans will help me achieve more balanced meals. I just found this website today so I'll start tomorrow after a trip to the grocery store.

Hi, I am Ashley. I am new. I just started being a vegetarian again. I was for 6 years in college/high school. I gave up towards the end of college because I started smelling hamburgers everywhere. I am starting back again because while I enjoy meat I dont need it. I like eating vegetarian more. I am not a picky eater and it is probably that fact that has gotten me where I am now. So... Hello everyone!!!

Hello All! I like to just call myself a "picky eater" which so happens to mean I do not like the taste of meat at all, no fish, chicken, beef, pork..I do eat dairy, just never liked meat, even as a child! I have become pretty lazy over the past couple of years so I am trying to get back into my healthy lifestyle!

Hi, Manny
I have to say how much I hate the fact that the basic formula of calories in vs calories out still prevails even when we're eating as healthily as possible! I've spent my life battling my weight, but usually by just overeating healthy stuff. So, I git it, Manny. Now that our weather is cooling off a tad, my walking begins tomorrow. And I started this week eating "real" vegan food instead of processed. But I'm also confronting the realization that I still have to eat LESS, dang it! Doesn't seem fair somehow! emoticon

Some people think the “plant-based whole foods diet” is extreme. Half a million a year will have their chests opened up and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme.

Howdy y'all!

My name is Manny and I'm the world's fattest vegan. I went vegetarian at 18 (I'm 36 now) and the last eight years have been vegan, but not at all healthy. I started my "new life" two weeks ago and have lost five pounds, but tomorrow will be my first weigh-in since joining this amazing site.

I look forward to sharing our journeys together.

I guess the best way to introduce myself is to copy & paste the same thing I just put on my page when I signed up. ;-) I've wanted to go vegan for so many years now, but every time I've tried I've just been overwhelmed. I'm not domestic, I don't love to cook. But I WANT this lifestyle. So I'm trying again. I'd say at this point I've been mostly vegetarian, and relying too much on healthier-but-still-processed foods. I want to find a way to have the energy & time & enthusiasm to cook my beans & grains and veggies, and maintain until it becomes easy and natural to me. I'm at the "lotta work" stage right now. Here's hoping I finally get beyond it!

Welcome, Marie! I used to be the same way. Not sure exactly when the hangs occurred but at some point after I transitioned from flexitarian to vegetarian to vegan (still not there but 90% of what I eat is) I realized that I was no longer havIng cravings for sweets. So hang in there! And good luck!!
