Since this family visiting us now live in Israel, they don't get to see many games What they do see is usually either on a computer or a cell phone. But because their Dad was born in Detroit, and they still get to visit his parents at least once a year they're loyal to the Detroit Tigers and Lions.

We're Phils and Yanks fans so the closest farm teams are over two hours away and we can see the real Phils for a not much longer drive (we do bus trips to NY). We have both an "A" and a "AA" Nats affiliate within less than an hour. The "A" team is the Hagerstown Suns where we are most likely to go because it's only twenty minutes... so, we got to see Bryce Harper several times the year he was there (They really played it up and sold t's that said "Harperstown"). Now, he's a Phil. We also saw Ryan Zimmerman on a rehab stint there.

We used to be season ticket holders for the Utica Blue Sox, minor league team in Utica, NY for several years. They changed which teams they were farm teams for, it was Short Season A league, real rookies. At one time they were from the Florida Marlins the year they won the World Series. The owner of the minor league team even got world series rings and I got to see and hold one. Wow, beautiful! They changed who they represented every few years but one of the teams they played was Oneonta Yankees and I could swear we saw Andy Pettite pitch. Nolan Ryan's son or Cal Ripken's son was on one of the teams that visited and the dad was there.
We really enjoyed going to the games but moved away from NY in 2000

The only problem I find with the minor league games is that all the cute activities, although entertaining, makes the game very long

I think the kids would love it, but it all depends on the weather. This week is supposed to be hot and/or rainy all week! They were in Detroit for a couple of weeks, and got to see the Tigers, but of course they don't have dogs that get the bats or any of the races that they have.

We went to a local minor league team that we have seen a few times. They are pretty good and the tickets are not horribly expensive. I enjoy going.

We went to a Grasshoppers' game the other day. It was a night game, but the temp started at 89 and ended at 84. And they lost! But I did find out that they are now affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Don't know when they switched, and know almost nothing about the current Pirates.

NITEMAN3D - You're right about the dates. It was sooooo long ago that I forget. I thought I was in the 5th grade, which was through June 1955, in 1957 I was in the 8th grade. But since my mother's family were all Yankee fans, I had dual loyalty, so it was not hard for me to switch.

I still have some ties to the Dodgers, since so many of the NY players stayed on in LA. But that's because they're in the National League. When they play the Yanks I'm totally against them. But I would also like to see US beat THEM.

Down in NC, the local team (The Greensboro Grasshoppers) I think are affiliated with the Marlins. We don't usually follow them, but occasionally go to a night game. (About once a year.) But my husband says that Jeter played here years ago, along with others that I can't remember. Are you still up north?

@CHARNA18, it was actually the end of '57 when they left. Opening their first season in 1958 they played the (then new) SanFrancisco Giants for the first game as the LA Dodgers at Seals Stadium (and lost... yay!). Like your dad, this eleven-year-old kid had sworn if his beloved Bums left he'd root for the Damn Yankees and I have ever since. I'm hoping we get to kick their butts in October. The Bombers are lookin' mighty good right now!

We lived in NYC until 1971, when we moved to Long Island. We moved down to NC in 2006,
We have the MLB package and the YES network to keep up with the Yankees. (Even though I had split loyalties growing up because my father was a Brooklyn Dodger fan. But he gave up on them in 1955 when they relocated to Los Angeles.

Cooperstown NY is about an hour away from where I am from in NY, I have been to Cooperstown many times for day trips. I can't begin to imagine 80,000 people in that small town this weekend in the 98F heat! Congratulations Mariano, Mike Mussina, and the others being inducted today. I can see a road trip in our family's future to see his display.

Okay, so I can't really find anything definitive, but this makes it sound like I reached a correct conclusion. Sounds to me like he'll keep going and that the announcement was simply about him finally missing a game after all those years?

BTW, we're still confused since DW was listening to YES a couple of nights ago and John was still on the air. Maybe he hasn't quit, but rather that just breaks his streak and he will now be taking nights off? I thought it meant he was retiring altogether.

This weekend is the London series between Bahstan and Yankees. To be honest, from where I am right now, I would have better luck getting tickets to this game in London than I would if I was home in New Hampshire. Here is a link that I hope works to the days of work done on the field to make it ready to play. Interesting.

Go Bombers! The pinstripes make magic for the player wearing them. No other explanation!

She will be buried in Conway, NH the town very close to me. Will have to find out where it is so I can go pay respects (and maybe lay a NYY item)

Finally watched the first game I missed. Loved the line drive homer by Judge. Hope he can keep it up when the season begins!

I heard on the news this afternoon that it is a 30% share for the Yankees and is not finalized yet. Other possible shareholders are Sinclair Broadcasting and Amazon...But the Yankees would have the majority.

I thought this quote from the linked article was interesting. I wonder what other effect if any, this will have on the viewer:

“Under Fox ownership, YES voices were given more freedom and gradually became more critical of the Yankees when necessary,” Raissman wrote. “When the Yankees owned YES, all the broadcasters, and YES management, either knew what NOT to talk about during a telecast or anticipated what would rattle the front office and stayed away from it.

“A return to Yankee ownership of YES could lead to the voices dialing back their critiques, bringing back the halcyon days of Al Yankzeera. Still, some will applaud the return of censorship to the Bronx.”

Missed the last two games. Still have a lot of daily shows to catch up on, and had an appointment today, so that makes 3 days in all. The games are recorded, and I hope to watch them eventually. (If it was in season, I would have stayed up all night to see them!

Boy, I hope that Severino is OK and that his shoulder problems are short-lived. It doesn't look like Happ has done very well so far this season, although I know it's early. I think we will need Sevy!

I know. It drives me crazy. But at least we can see the games, even if not with our announcers. It's just frustrating that although we have it scheduled to record every game they don't default to the Yankee broadcast every time. We have to check and see whenever they show different announcers that there's no other option for that game.

I do understand that if it's on one of the networks, it's not possible. But when it isn't being blacked out the Yankee channel is not always selected automatically. emoticon

I've missed them too. I have it set to record ALL Yankee games, but it missed the last one. It's weird. Sometimes, it records the "wrong" (as in opponent's announcers) channels. So we have to check the schedule days in advance,

We have DirectTV and sometimes it even tries to record from a station we don't get. Other times we HAVE to have the opponents announcers because it is "blacked out" by MLB. But those teams can be 500 mile from us. (We're in NC and the blacked out teams are Baltimore, Atlanta and Washington DC. Who would even drive that far for a regular game? I wouldn't even drive that far for a playoff game!

Ready for spring up here in Maine too. Brrrr!!! Yeah, 13 years for Harper? That is a LOOONG time. I am thankful we didn't end up with him or Machado.

Waiting patiently for more spring training games to be televised. I have missed my Yankees!!

Donnie Baseball! That reminds me, I haven't heard anymore out of Derek since that flap last year with the press. Must go do some scouting for the Phillies and see what the Marlins are up to. Wish I could actually go down there as they're calling for wintry mix here over the weekend followed by single digit temps next week. Ugh! I hate winter!

Phils just signed Harper in the biggest deal in history and now they better hope it's not the biggest mistake in history?

RiP Mel.....

I really thought Tanks would go after Keuchel, but guess not. In addition pitching, we need contact hitters. Too many strikeouts, need to put the ball into play. Maybe Otttovano (sp?) replaces Robertson?

We're purple people which is what you get when you mix blue and red, Phils n Yanks. The Phils will have new life if they get both Manny and Harper. Yankees need pitching! A real ace or two on top of the two good ones we have. Tanaka and Severino are a good start, but more is needed. Is Happ back? I think they moved Robertson to the Phils by trade or sale last week? I think spring training will tell us what's up with another three pitchers.
