Hang in there, Denise! You're in my prayers -- those restrictions sound very difficult to handle. I'm glad you can find relief at meetings.

I have been feeling bored, lonely, and anxious since coming home from 3 weeks in-pt for lumbar laminectomy. I have 2 more months of "no bending or twisting". That means no housework, and I live alone! I have severe loss of feeling in my hands as well (due to neck injury). All I am suppose to do is walk. I've been going to AA meetings nearly daily to keep me sane. Using these boards helps too. Unfortunately my 9 yr old computer is on its last leg. So s l o w and unreliable. Will be leaving for another walk. Denise

Yesterday I went up into the attic and lowered a lot of wood scraps that hubby said "you never know when you'll need a piece of wood". Evidently never because over 28 years it was quite an accumulation. Today I'll stuff as much as I can fit into my station wagon and take it to the dump tomorrow. It feels so good to check tasks off a list!!

Hope you are feeling better today Meddy. You must have many hours of sunlight now where you live.

In Sweden it seems like every day starts sunny and then trun into rain and it is not very warm – which I prefer as I wear a wig at the theatre and it gets rather sweaty!

Enjoy your weekend, Steph.

I hope your have a lovely vacation, MeddyPeddy.

We're looking at hot weather, temps in the 100's. I can't think of any place to get away that wouldn't be unbearably crowded. I guess I'll be drinking plenty of water in an un-airconditioned apartment

Let's walk!

I have an extra long weekend coming up. Monday is Canada Day, and I took a couple of extra days. DH and I are off on a wilderness camping trip which I am so looking forward to. The peace and quiet is so welcome. Friends are supposed to come with us, but their plans are up in the air so I don't know if that will happen. Part of me hopes they cancel even though I enjoy their company and it would be a blast. The solitude and total break from society would be so rejuvenating.

I was told about the 13th step right away. I was younger than anyone else at meetings back then, 27, so would have been prey, I guess. But the predators are hardly secret, I just didn't have the ability to see them when I first got to AA (or much of anything past my own misery and pre-conceived notions). Even though my husband was disgusted with me for a long time, the idea of these cool, confident older men who thought I was wonderful could have turned my head if I hadn't been completely surrounded by the wonderful women of the program. I am no longer young and the object of lust, but I see it in others, and help younger women avoid it until they, too, can see it.

Interesting article - I read a passive-aggressive attitude towards AA - in Sweden I have never heard about "the thirteenth step" – but of course I have realised that the community is inhabitad with a lot of people that have many issues and as it is "self-controling" that is also a lesson to e learned - but to me the system and philosophy overrules any weird people that tries to imply their own views on the group...

Is a female alcoholic different than a male? There are enough similarities to make it okay to have goups with men and women but I do think women has a lot of special conditions and might need to address them. As a militant feminist I still have to admit that I donīt like all female AA groups - they tend to stray away from the establish patterns and start to form a unity that I donīt want. But I used to visit an all female group in my former home and that group was graat. For the moment my group is more women than men - thatīs funny as I have for some years spent many meetings being the only female.

For the moment i have to force myself to go to meetings, I donīt feel good about them although I still feel great afterwardsAnd without the warmth and connection at meetings I would probably be a lot more depressed than I am - it is a matter of Just Do It I think...

Thank you so much for the link to that article. It is an excellent article. I want to ask my primary care doctor if he can prescribe naltrexone or topiramate for me to help me quit drinking. I have been struggling. I keep on quitting and going for a week or two but then always relapsing, feeling guilty, and quitting again. Alcohol is always around me and really tempts me especially at certain times and with certain triggers. I want to buy the book mentioned when it comes out. "Her Best Kept Secret: Why women drink - And how they can regain control" by Gabrielle Glaser.
p.s. I was SHOCKED at the STUPID comments people left at the end of the article. They must have been drinking when they wrote most of them.

Anyone see this in yesterday's Wall Street Journal? Another argument that women drunks are so different from men. Are we really? Every drunk's motives are different, male and female. Even though I didn't have the ego that is sung of in story and song (I'm hardly an Ernest Hemingway) my drunk housewife days were full of ego in ways that I didn't see until I went to enough meetings and heard my story from others, the internal anger that, like the old camp song, "I'm great but no one knows it", is actually ego. I, too, thought I was purchasing forgiveness with submission, but that isn't a strictly female trait. I, too, wanted to be able to drink like a normal person. Who doesn't when first going to AA? I can't have one sip, any more than I can eat one Cheeto. Abstinence no longer bothers me, but it took a long time to get here. A meeting gives me all the respite from life that I looked for in a drink (One drink? Who am I kidding? I drank a quart of bourbon a day) but AA gives me a lot more than that. And I never would have found it if I hadn't kept going back.

Hi!
I've been sober, but absent from team due to computer probs and recent 3-week in-pt for back surgery. Discharged on oxycotin (narcotic). Will be seeing MD for change of meds. I don't need a "new" addiction! I've been sober for 10 months. emoticon

Does AA in your area have meetings specifically for big holidays? Around here there are marathon meetings over Christmas, New Years and July 4, just for people who want to celebrate somehow, but don't want to be around the drinking and feel left out.

I rrely meet any of my AA friends randomly although the city I live in is not that big. A colleagu at work suddenly showed up at an open meeting - her brother is active.
Tomorrow is the only day of the year I sometimes miss alcohol - it is midsummers eve that we celebrate with fresh potatoes, sour cream herring, chive and for dessert strawberries with cream. Very traditional and a schnapps should go with it. I was a wine drinker, aqvavit was never a problem, I had one or two at midsummer and christmas.
I might be in the danger of relapse (after eight years!) I feel alienated from meetings and sort of neutral to alcohol. A snaps on midsummers eve would be the starting road back to wine drinking, not today and maybe not tomorrow but it would stay in the back of my mind whispering "come on, you had that snaps and it was not a problem, you can handle it"...

There are no people (of 17) at my work who are sober alcoholics, but there are a couple who need the program, and a couple who could use the steps for learning how to live. It lifts my mood for quite some time when I even just see another AA on the street or in the store. I feel connected.

It sounds cool to have a sobriety network connected to your job. There's no overlap between the people I know through the Program and the people I know at my job.

I remember one year when one of the big outlet malls opened at 7am on New Year's Day. I thought it would be just hubby and me and a bunch of hungover salespeople. Turned out it was crowded! Other people just don't drink the way I thought they did, which means the way I did.

That is a job I would like to have! I even had a bus drivers license but it expired when I had cancer and I did not have the energy to renew it...

But thinking of it, one of the best benefits of not drinking alcohol is that I never have to think about if I am am okay sober to drive.

As a school bus driver there is ZERO tolerance - we could lose our driver's license. When I am driving a morning, mid-day, and PM routes there is no time for meetings - so it will be really nice to have meetings there. One of my friends saw me at KMart with a bus where I was trying to do some recruiting - she is starting training on Thursday. YEAH!!! Another sober person to make contact with at work.

When I mentioned at the beginning of the month that my work hours had changed I did not say that I am on the recruiting team looking for new school bus drivers for the new school year. I am stacking the deck - asking all my program friends if they are looking for a job. I am hoping that we will have a good group so that during the break between morning and mid-day runs we can all get on an empty bus and have an AA meeting right there on base. HEHE that would be great!!!

I have been in one too, many years ago - thought it was brilliant and have since then said that if I ever get rich enough to install a pool it would be with that resistance stream in it - I imagine that it must work that I have different "marks" to stay with to differ the exercise - the longer I am from the scource the easier it must be to keep in place...

At the indoor arena yesterday I had planned to swim for forty minutes, but by 7.30 people started to come and the lanes got so crowded I gave up after 35 minutes... my plan is to do 30 and anything over that is voluntary. Today I have a headache and cancelled the swimming bit.

I've been in a resistance pool. It's a great (if expensive) way to swim in a small pool.

I find that swimming in the sea or a lake is much harder than in a pool. But I do love swimming outdoors, though, even there are waves to contend with. I think the concept of those resistance pools is interesting. They have a current flowing against you so you swim in place.

I canīt say that I love to swim but it is a very good exercise – I would probably love it if it was in the sea so I did not have to turn all the time...

I am grateful to be Canadian and have healthcare that it is free and accessible. They system is not perfect, but no one in Canada would have a bill like that for an emergency surgery. Hope your son makes it through the crisis clean and sober.

I visited my sister out of town for the weekend. She has some mental health issues that make it easier for me to stay at a hotel instead of her house. The visit was great because I stood my ground and did what I had to do for my sanity. We swam Saturday night and Sunday morning at the pool at my hotel. I timed it and swam 30 minutes Sunday morning, after already running for an hour earlier. I forgot how much I love to swim. I will add it to my workouts in the winter. The local rec centre is only 5 minutes from my house and they have several lap swims during the week I could get to.

I hade to drive her back to her father yesterday as the last bus parted before we were finished with the rehearsal. We wrote a rap together during our drive and it was great. I think my grumpiness was partly because I knew I had to drive her down - it is self chosen but I still get angry woth myself because I give in to other people plans although they cost me too much.

Remember, Meddy, that your daughter will be grown and gone in the blink of an eye. What will you remember? My youngest is 38 with a son of his own, and I wish I'd more appreciated the boys when they were home. Teenagers feel like they will be an eternal irritant, but so quickly they are grown.

I was a grumpuy mother yesterday, what is wrong with me? I have this absolutely darling daughter and I sneer and yell at her because I feel so irritated. True that she is getting to be a normal teenager, leaving things all over the place but that should not bother me as it is so messy with my own things...

At least you can't go to jail for debt anymore. It's not like he ran up a credit card, or like he planned his appendix to rupture. There is always bankruptcy (guaranteed in the Constitution), but only the lawyers win with that.

My son just got his bill from the hospital for his appendectomy. It's over $17,000. That's after the $1000 for the emergency room, and the $500 for a lab. Of course, he can't pay it. He makes $11/hr and can't even support himself on that. It's going to be a miserable time getting this straightened out. I just hope he can not drink (or smoke) through it all.

Got my lawnmower to wrok yesterday - what a relief! It is still spooky because it worked and then when I shut it off to remove some stuff it was dead again until I checked all the cables again... and then it worked again. But as I have not found anything broken I have fixed and the problem came back I need to get somebody professional to go through it...

There is that innate sense of competition. I remember one time going up the escalator at the Rosslyn Metro station. It's looong. The guy next to me started going faster and faster and I felt I had to keep up. We were pretty much running by the time we got to the top. I have no idea why I felt I had to keep up with this total stranger but it felt good. That was 25 years ago and I couldn't do it today.

That sounds like a great workout, MeddyPeddy! I often put in 5-10 extra minute on the treadmill due to the person working out next to me.

To start the day with swomming for forty minutes made it feel successful, really enjoyable! I have done the same today, even ten minutes more, 50 minutes! The reason was a woman who did a lot of gymnastics at the ladder up from the pool and I decided not to stop swimming until she had finished, it added ten minutes to the 40 I had planned to do.

I chose to let go of lunch meeting yesterday - after a weekend of craziness I will try to put my needs absolutely first this week – and with needs I mean the things I need to do to keep myself balanced and serene. Monday lunch meetings at AA has turned into really busy ones with people coming from the treatment center. I am not all comfortable there and as I have edition week with paper I chose to stay at work and get things done - and it turned out fine. I am aiming for ACOA meeting thursday instead - thursday is our "fourth of july" in Sweden so we are off work.

June is usually crazy here, weather wise. It can be cold and rain, or hot and humid. To me, it is a bridge month between May where the land wakes up from winter, to summer where it is in it's full splendor. It is still too cold early in the morning for bike rides, but I have been running a lot.

I am so grateful for AA today. So many things went wrong, one after another. But nothing to actually harm me or my loved ones. I prayed, declared a do-over and since then, things have been going well. It still amazes, but not surprises me that the tools of the program work when you earnestly use them.

I am 47. My entire life has been on a school schedule - student, crossing guard, student, mother, teacher, and now school bus driver. I totally understand time flying by like a blink of an eye. It seems to be going so slow when it is here day after day but then you look back and wonder where did the time go. I saw one of my friend's daughters is graduating high school. The daughter was 4 when I met my friend.

Love ya lots and lots and lots Whole bunches WHOOO!!! HUGZ

Elizabeth, I don't know how old you are, but for those of us with a few years on the clock, next year will be here in the blink of an eye. I'm glad you are back to work and can find a new normal.

I have always loved June, too. It was the start of summer, the end of school, and my birthday month. It's been a long time since the school calendar was on my radar, and at my age I don't care about birthdays, but I still love June.

Usually I love June. It means the end of the school year, a trip to Akron, Ohio, and my AA anniversary.

I fell at work in February and fractured my elbow. I was off work from February until the end of May. During that time I used up my savings and can't go to Akron. My husband said when we get the settlement check, he wants me to put away the money so I can go to Akron next year. Sometimes earthlings drive me crazy but I love this one.

When I returned to work I was confronted with a new schedule so I had to give up most of my meetings. With the school year ending this coming week my schedule will change again so I will be looking for new meetings to go to. I am lucky tho - I live in an area where there are three Alano club houses and many meetings. I just need two free hours that will allow me time to drive to a club, sit for a meeting, and get back to work on time.

Will let you know what is going on later in the month.

Love ya lots and lots and lots Whole bunches WHOOO!!! HUGZ
