I have sprained both ankles at different times, for a total of six times! In 2004 I had the worst sprain, the orthopedist said I would have been better off breaking it. In physical therapy I was told to do the following exercises before even getting out of bed:

Raise legs and do circles with both ankles - 15 clockwise and 15 counterclockwise
Write the English alphabet in capital letters by pointing big toe - you will feel the burn!

Once I healed, I had to incorporate a lot more calf exercises, stand on the stairs and do calf raises, place a buso ball (I think that's the name) on the floor and stand on the flat side and keep balance as long as possible - start out by standing next to something you can hold on to like a wall or a column. Once you've become a pro, close your eyes and try to keep your balance.

Doing calf raises with feet parallel and at an angle will help make ankles stronger and will help with preventing sprains.
