I think they have had a noise ordinance around here since before I was in high school, but it isn't really enforced anymore. Kind of like the fireworks. For many years it has been illegal to shoot fireworks or even use sparklers or glow worms, but they shoot them off like crazy from the beginning of June until a week after July 4, then again for a couple days around New Years.

Allison, I am sorry that they are so inconsiderate where you are. That is really terrible.

Every where I've lived you there was a noise ordinance and the volume had to be below a certain limit. I lived in one neighborhood were the police would patrol the neighbor hood at 9:45 and remind people to quite down, guess they got a lot of calls. And I lived in the county in TX

Do you have quiet hours? Our county has quiet hours between 11pm and 6am. Any noise between those hours and we can call the police. Unless the noise is made by children, fair housing laws give kids a pass.

If my neighbors would just actually SLEEP at night and not play music or TV or have a party, I would get up at 6 am every morning. I was awake most of the night, it got louder at 4 am and at 5 am I turned on my TV (which I can't hear but I can hear them!) I got up at either 7 or 7:30. I can't function without enough sleep. It was so loud and painful to my ears even with ear plugs on Sunday night (yes, Sunday night!) I felt like I was retaliating. I think the only reason for this kind of behavior must be drugs. I wear ear plugs at night and they barely help. I wear them mainly to protect my ears from further damage, as my disease is causing damage to the cilia in the cochlea of my ear. They don't seem to block the constant night noise.

I had the cats' teeth checked at their last checkups. They need to be cleaned but otherwise they are okay. I want to get their teeth cleaned but it's such a chore. I will check into how much it costs and see how it works to get it done.

So I am now officially feeding the cats two different foods. Cookie is eating the old prescription diet (Hill's I/D diet) and Tang and Felix are eating Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Green Pea and Chicken. I will see what the vet says when she gets in this week. It might be tomorrow or Wednesday before I hear. I am happy the boys will eat a grain free diet as it helps their weight, and I'm just happy that Cookie is eating something.

I can't remember not getting up early. Bed time was 8P and so we got up early, then when I got married we lived on the farm and you started the day feeding chickens at 4:30A and went to bed with the sun. Somehow I never changed. I'm retired now, but my body says you get up early

It isn't light out and around here I don't walk in the dark, I love the trees and they are one reason I can breath better, but they do hid what's out there but when I lived in TX and could see everything around me a 3 mile walk started at 4:30A. Didn't have street lights in TX and don't have them here.

MaryAlice, Orzo use to only eat a teaspoon full twice a day. Now he eats more than that after all the sauce is gone and he has left it for a while, but the dry is hard. He is eating a little more than a can a day now and a little tiny bit of his dry. Today he is eating more often than usual. Don't let him know he has gained some weight back, though, or he won't eat anything for a few days.

I've never had a problem with picky eaters till they got older then they wanted the dry for mature cats, but can't fault them for that. I don't think I have every had a cat that wanted much wet cat food. There was one that likes a spoonful about every other day. And I did have one that would eat what I gave her, but was more interested if I changed brands every couple of weeks

Diana, with Orzo I have been asked often if his teeth are okay (which they need work on). Have you checked to see if their teeth are in good shape? Also some problem could be if the dry food is harder than what they are use to. Orzo could only handle the Blue Mature because it is slightly softer than other brands. Well, he also was okay with Canidae, but the only others that were soft enough made him sick in other ways (he kept missing the litter box I soft stools). They don't seem softer than anything else, but he could eat them and chew them so he didn't throw everything up after. Just an idea if the new dry food is harder to chew.

Cats are picky eaters.

I am surprised the Ancient Egyptians didn't write this as graffiti in hieroglyphic somewhere on an ancient temple or pyramid. I think maybe it's hard to get them to eat canned and dried food because it goes against their nature--they don't have to catch it first, which I guess they then have the instinct to eat it.

Very true, Nell.

Well Tang and Felix are eating the chicken and/or turkey limited ingredient food, but I think Cookie is avoiding it. I will throw out the food in their bowls tonight and try the chicken food again to see if they'll eat it. I know they're really hungry and I just gave them a little bit of the limited ingredient wet food, which they love. I find it strange that they will eat both the venison and the duck wet food, but not the dry food. I hope to hear back from the vet tomorrow. I'm running out of different foods to try on them.

They turned their noses up to the duck and green pea food too, but I am now trying turkey and garbanzo bean food and they seem to like that. I will keep feeding it to them tonight and tomorrow to see if they keep eating it before I throw away the bag. I have two other kinds of food that I bought to try too. I think they just don't like strong, gamy food. I am glad to have (hopefully) found some dry food they will eat. I will talk to the vet next week to see what she thinks about the turkey and garbanzo bean food.

I like that law. It would sure help some people nowadays that are either having to get rid of their pets or move out. Just read about a lady who was told she had to get rid of her dog that she has had for over a year even though her lease agreement said she could have a dog there. The apartments were sold and the new owner will not honor the lease. With that law the new owner couldn't do that.

I have been trying to find out costs for dentals for Orzo. I emailed a "low income" veterinary clinic. They start at $100 over what the vet yesterday quoted after looking at Orzo's teeth. How can those places say they are for low income? The Dumb Friends clinic that said nothing could be done started at just $50 less and claimed to charge half as much. The recommended place charged someone $300 several years ago. I think the only lower costs are the office calls, which are getting rather high where I take him now.

There have only been 2 times I didn't get my animal from a pound, dog or car. I'm 66 and only 3 years I can remember not having a cat. One was when a lady found a kitten, was going to take it to the pound. but I took it first and the second was when I moved into a rental there was up on blocks and there was a cat living under the house. I asked around and was told the cat had lived there over year and had kittens there at least once. I started taking care of her, took her to the vet to make sure there wouldn't be any ore kittens. Vet said she was healthy and fixed the kitten problem.

Then the landlord said she had a strict no pets rule. I was living in FLA and knew there was a law that said if an animal had lived on your property a year and no one claimed it, it was yours. So she owned me for vet bills and caring for the cat. That shut her up. Yes the law was written when there was open range cattle, but it was still on the books and if it would help the kitty, I was using it.

I got my hair done yesterday. My hairdresser is a volunteer at the animal shelter, she fosters dogs and cats. She had a dog with her yesterday who was going to a new owner when she finished up for the day. She gets litters of tiny kittens sometimes, she won't take them if they need bottle feeding, but between 1 and 2 months, she'll let me know when she gets the next batch so I can pick one out. That means I'll have to get my older two cats their shots, I haven't done that in years. When you get a cat from a breeder it's clean and healthy, and safe to be with other cats. Kittens from an unknown source can carry disease, so I'll have to prepare the older two. There aren't as many breeders as there used to be, so availability has gone down and price has therefore gone up. So it's back to unknowns. With a breeder, you can look at the parents and know how big they'll get, a stray is a total unknown.

Smokey's veterinarian said to mix some of her old food into the new duck and pea and cut back on the old food until she got used to the new taste (2-3 days). It must be incredibly boring and unappetizing to eat the same flavor every day, but I stuck with it because even a slight variation in food meant upchucking and diarrhea. She ate more on some days than others. But she always ate. Not any choice, and she did I think appreciate not getting sick from her food.

Thank you for understanding how i felt and sharing about your healthier cats too.

Everyone loved Smokey, she had a very sweet nature.

Well, the cats hate the pea and venison dry food, so I returned it today. Got a bag of limited ingredients duck and potato by Blue Buffalo. The verdict's still out on it. They're not crazed about it but they're eating it a little.

I don't mean to put down the Friskies and Fancy Feast. Most people think they aren't as good for cats as the other foods and the more expensive ones are what is donated to Pet Food Pantry where I get part of his food. He has decided the fancier stuff, like lamb and rabbit, is no good to eat.

I took him to get his nails trimmed today and the place has changed things and now requires you to make an appointment and you must bring their rabies certificate. Never needed those things before and didn't have the rabies since Orzo doesn't go outside. So ended up at the vet's getting a full checkup, rabies, and the nail trim. Now he also needs to go get his teeth taken care of, but on my social security I don't have enough for that. I am thinking of doing a gofundme for the two of us since I need surgery in April, too. Or maybe on Facebook since they have something now, too. I did find out he has gained some weight back. Yay!

When the vet tech brought Orzo back to the room she was carrying him outside of his carrier. She said she just couldn't put him down, he was so sweet. When I took him to that other clinic in December he hated that vet. He seems to love everyone at my regular vet clinic.

Allison, I guess there isn't much to say about healthy cats, since that is normal. But for your valentine. Fancy is a tabby I got as a sponsored cat from the pound. A sponsored cat that is discounted because it has been there too long. She is a very happy loving kitty that spends her time looking out the window watching the birds, or at night sleeping in my bed where she is touching my leg. I move she moves. The only time she gets sick is when she eats a daddy long legs. That was a problem when we first moved here, but I think I have convinced the stupid things they better stay out of my house. Fancy is very good, when she gets sick, if I pour a little kitty liter over it she mixes it up good so it is easy to sweep up. Fancy does like to bat my ankle when I walk by her, but she keeps her claws in, so I'm guessing she is saying HI. The pound gave me sample of many different kinds of food. She wouldn't eat but a mouthful of any of the canned food and of the dry, she ate all of them, but seamed to prefer one of the lower priced brands. The vet said that was a good brand, so that's what she gets. It has been 4 years, she is happy, vet says she is healthy, so I'm happy.

Please don't dis Fancy Feast and Friskies by calling them cheap, because that's what I feed my current cat. I know these brands available at the grocery store do cost lest than Petco brands. I fed my cat Smokey (who did develop IBD) on Natural Balance Duck and Pea, wet and dry, and kept her alive for nine years more after she was diagnosed. It WAS expensive for me on my disabiity income.. But to me "cheap" is pet food from the Dollar Tree. Which I had fed to Smokey when I was really broke prior to her diagnosis--although it in no way caused her illness.

How we care for our cats is quite complicated and involves many different factors. The choice is the owners but ONE thing I am completely sure of is that ALL members here truly love cats and do the best they can for their loved ones, even if it differs from how some others may care for their cat. I try very hard as the administrator to keep my personal preferences out of what people say, even if I might disagree. I also try to be helpful as much as I possibly can be.

I guess talking about cats being sick and ill on Valentine's Day is making me a little sad and weepy. I love your cat even if I've never met him/her! Please excuse me.

Diana, I'm glad what you are doing for your foster cat is working. I used to have troubles with Orzo throwing up daily, but not bile. He couldn't keep his food down. One vet suggested he might have IBD and I was trying raw diet for him, but he wouldn't eat it (he does like treats of it, though). Then was at Petco one time when a Blue representative was there and she suggested their mature formula. That did him good. He still will throw up once in a while, but only after 2 months. Now he doesn't get much of that, though, and is eating mostly canned. CHEAP canned. He won't touch the other stuff and the canned is only the Fancy Feast or Friskies. He is picky, but I love him anyway.

Today it has finally gotten warm enough that I can take him to get his nails trimmed. They are really long and he gets caught in my sweaters.

Siobhan used to throw up bile all the time. She wouldn't eat special food, wouldn't allow medication, I figured it was her choice. We loved her to the end.

Diana, I'm glad you found what helps. I've been lucky so far. Mom says a at was waiting by my cradle when I came home from the hospital, I'm 66 now and except for 3 years when I lived on a collage campus have always had a cat. Once 23 barn cats. I have only had one special needs cat and the vet said that was genetic defect and nothing I could do but love her for the 3 years she had. I had her 5 years

I bought a huge metal bowl for water today. It's actually a dog's bowl. With the water in it, it's far too heavy for Tang to knock over.

I've been going back and forth with Cookie, my foster cat, to the vet's. Ever since I brought her home last fall, I've noticed that she was throwing up an awful lot-- at least once per day. She's on a steroid now, and if she takes it daily, she doesn't throw up. So the doctor today officially gave her a diagnosis of Irritable Bowl Syndrome. She is to stay on the steroids, but on a half dose (2.5 mg. rather than 5 mg.). I'm concerned that she could develop diabetes by being on steroids long term, so the lower dosage may help to prevent that. Overall, the benefits on being on the steroid outweigh the risks right now. She's gained a pound as she can eat and keep down food better and is generally healthier. She's also going to stay on the Laxatone, which is a prescription anti-hairball gel. And she doesn't need vitamin B12 shots anymore. Finally, we are changing her diet to a hypoallergenic diet to see if that helps. We're trying the Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Grain Free Pea Protein and Venison. The cats seem to like it so far. I also ordered the same brand wet food online and dry Pea Protein and Duck food. Unfortunately, I have to get rid of all the other wet food I have, and it's about 30 cans in assorted brands and flavors. I'm going to give them to a friend who takes care of several feral cat colonies as I don't have the receipt to return them anymore. But I will be able to take back the two other bags of prescription dry food that we won't be using and get a refund for them.

Tang is still on 5 mg. of steroids every other day and hasn't been wheezing. I'm hoping he just needs to be on the steroids for the winter and then is able to come off of them in spring.

My last cat, April, used to touch my face with her paw and always kept her claws pulled in. Orzo doesn't seem to know how to do the claws in, so he isn't allowed to put his paw up on my cheek like he would like to. Instead he rubs his head and gives licky kisses. So the valentine goodie fits him. He is definitely a lover.

I think like people cats learn what death really is when they either lose a cat (or dog) or a person. I am glad they have each other's support.

Today I bought a stone to mount Siobhan's grave marker. The others are granite, but they didn't have granite pavers anymore, I got a slate. Now to glue them together and place it on her grave.

Yes, great idea! I'll check out the dog bowls and stands when I'm at PetCo this week. Maybe if it's big and heavy enough it will keep Tang out of it.

DUCKTURNIP, they also make stands for small pet food and water bowls that are raised up of the floor. I see MARYALICE411 just mentioned those. That might help?

Fancy was dragging her water bowl all over the house. I found the crock from a crock pot at the thrift store. Holds more water then she needs but she can't drag it around. A friend got one of those dog food stands. She says the cat jumps up om it and gets her drink just fine

I can't use smaller bowls (ceramic or metal) because Tang likes to play "water hockey" with little bowls full of water-- bats them around the kitchen and gets the floor all wet. I'll look at bowls the next time I'm at the pet store.

I like Peta's Vegan of the Year and I have liked some of their recipes in the past. They remind me of Green Peace, honestly. I don't like their "shock" and nudity tactics in campaigns. My stance is you catch more flies with honey than vinegar and I find their approach can be very offensive. I am eating meat now again; my body feels better on it. But I don't look down on the eating practices of anyone, unless they are harming their body by it. Eventually we will all be vegan because of climate change; there will be less available land for food production and less water and reliable growing seasons. Meat will become much more expensive to buy, but so will food in general. Lots of products are threatened already--coffee, tea, wine, and chocolate, to name a few. There are even extremists who claim that things are going to be so bad, people will become cannibals to survive! Sometimes I promise my cat that no matter how bad things get, I will never eat her!

Peta makes me life hard. I guess there is a good reason for them, but I think they have out lived their usefulness. Why does Peta make my life hard. I'm vegetarian because my body lost the ability to digest meat. People hear that I'm vegetarian and start in on me about animal rights and how mistaken Peta is. No I don't try to make my family or my pets vegetarian.

I see that PETA now objects to calling our cats our pets because it implies ownership. Well, I do own my cats, I bought them from someone who sold them. They are property, but my cats sure do have a great life, they pretty much shape life in my house, they want for nothing. Sometimes people like to make problems where there are none.

I got mine either at Petco or PetsMart. Another idea you might try is some ceramic bowls like you eat from. That is what Orzo eats from. He wouldn't drink from them because he wanted to drink from the same bowls as my dog.

Where would you all suggest I look for a large stainless steel water bowl for my cats? I have a plastic one for them right now that's quite big but it tends to get dirty easily and it's hard to clean. I would like to get something metal for them because I could clean it easier. I will have to look at PetCo next time I go.

I have all the dog bowls for water. I gave Orzo a separate one from Cassie's, but he preferred the ones she drank out of. He wouldn't drink from any that were for him only. Silly boy. When I first got him he wanted running water, but I kept forgetting to turn off the faucet and couldn't afford to waste all that water when he was done drinking.

I bought 4 identical bowls for cats that are stainless steel for not a lot of $ at Walmart. The bottoms are skid proof. So she gets her wet and dry food in those bowls a little apart on a cat feeding mat that has paw prints on it--it's really just a plastic large place mat, whoever came up with that is brilliant. I had read that cats do not like their water bowl to be placed near their food bowl, so her water bowl is in another room. I bought that from Petco---It's actually a stainless steel drinking bowl for small dogs. I like that it is bigger and deeper than a bowl usually sold for a cat, I think she appreciates that. I dump and refill her bowl with fresh water (tap water) every morning..

The steroids seem to be helping. Last wheezing attack was Monday, I think.

My cats eat out of bowls and don't seem to have a problem eating. All three are big eaters with big appetites. I will feed them on plates if I need to wash the bowls, but they don't seem to care either way!

Orzo's dry food is in a longer bowl (little baking bowl). He has been trying to eat a little of it along with the canned he is grazing on. He has actually gone through maybe a third of what I put in there a couple days ago. That surprised me.'''

What would he be saying when he gets through eating and comes in here yowling? I just can't figure out what is going on in his mind. He seems to want something.

Diana, I hope everything works out for your cat and he continues to improve.

I read the other day that cats do not like to eat from bowls (at least not if their whiskers touch the sides). I don't remember the reason, just that they don't like their whiskers to touch. I had never heard that. Anyway, I tried switching Orzo's food to a plate. He was leery of it at first, but finally ate from it and did much better eating until this morning. I needed to wash the plate, so was soaking it and put his food in the bowl. He wouldn't touch his food until I moved it back to the plate.

What do you all feed your cats in?

Further suspicions that my Tang has some sort of asthma or allergies: He was on steroids for about 2 weeks and the wheezing stopped. After about 5 days of being off, the wheezing came back with a bang. He is now on steroids again to see if it will take care of it. I hate having animals on steroids as long-term use can cause a host of problems, but we will see if it helps.

I don't think I ever saw Groundhog Day.

Val, I don't know where all the groundhogs said early spring, but I think here we are going to have a later winter. It was sunny and 72 today. Tomorrow will prove our groundhogs would be right to go back to bed. It's suppose to be 30 and snowing. Tuesday 18 and snowing. Orzo and I will stay in tomorrow and maybe even Tuesday, but I need to get some detergent one of those days. Also have to take trash out Tuesday.

Well the results are in and apparently the majority of the marmot predictors are calling for an early Spring. Music to my ears, but I won't hold my breath - by the calendar (which has a more accurate record LOL) there's still six weeks left of winter.

I remember the movie, but it's been so long since I've seen it that details have faded.

Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania celebrates Groundhog Day every February, but so does my former hometown of Woodstock, IL. Almost the entire film, Groundhog Day, a comedy starring Bill Murray, was filmed in Woodstock. I seem to remember a cat in that movie. Does Phil Conners, Bill Murray's character, rescue a cat? Or is there just a cat in one of the scenes?

Thank you, Val.

Diana, I'm glad you are feeling better.

Orzo doesn't seem to pay any attention to the birds or animals that are outside as far as I can tell. I was trying to figure out what kind of bird was in the yard one time, though, and kept playing different birds on the internet. He almost went through the computer trying to find those birds. He will also come check it out if anything comes up where you can hear the bird on the computer.

My friend gave Orzo some Sheeba food that comes in little individual meal packets. LITTLE packets. For Orzo that is 2 meals. I don't know how to get him to eat more. The saucy food he eats the sauce off and leaves the rest until later. Pate he barely eats any (that's what the Sheeba is). Yesterday he never finished what I gave him early. He ate a little of the Sheeba so I added some of the saucy kind and he licked the sauce off. He did eat to where there was half of the Sheeba left, but no more.

My cats are immune to the chipmunks and squirrels that run around the porch, but they chatter at the birds. It must be that flittering motion that's so attractive.
