Nell, my Marty's ashes are in a little wooden box. They also took a plaster paw print of him at the pet mortuary when he went to be cremated. I have his ashes, paw print, collar, and the sweater he wore at the end (it was winter and he was just so thin) all on my dresser with his picture and a candle. I light the candle in the mornings and tell him how much I miss him, even though it's been two years now.

I flooded my bathroom and part of my bedroom because I forgot about it running, but it was because I can't hear water running, not for the cat.

MaryAlice, do you think your husband could teach us how to understand what our cats are saying? I am always wondering about what Orzo is trying to tell me. When I got home today from meeting my friend he literally screamed at me. Scared me half to death.

My friend had posted that her cat always wanted fresh water so was always yowling for it. I told her Minnie didn't yowl, Orzo yowls. Minnie is quiet and feminine. She did say that Minnie is driving her husband nuts, though. She insists every bowl in the house needs fresh water several times a day and then wants it running from the faucet, too. Come to think of it, Orzo used to insist on the water running from the faucet. I had to stop that, though, because I couldn't remember to turn it off.

I picked up Rosie's ashes today. They are in a beautiful cherry wood box, with her name engraved on a brass plate. It's a slightly smaller version of the wooden urn my mother is in. I'm sad all over again.

Fancy got out once, climb a tree and then cried she couldn't get down, I tried calling her down with no luck, so went to find a ladder. I didn't have one long enough so went to tell my husband and found him standing under the tree, meowing back at Fancy. All of a sudden she gave a very indigent meow, almost "If you say so" and ran down the tree and into the house. Now she sits by the door, sometimes looking out when it is open, but she hasn't crossed the threshold.

I think there will always be a lot of kittens in shelters here. Too many people think cats need to run free, even if they are in danger from wild animals (yep, even in a big city) and speed demon drivers. They think it is cruel not to let the cats out to roam, but I got news for them. Cats can be very happy as indoor cats. Orzo is.

I am looking for a kitten and there sure aren't as many now as there were a few years back. The push to neuter animals has made its mark. There are still surprise litters, but nothing like I remember as a kid when it seemed like everyone was trying to place kittens.

I hope Orzo doesn't end up with the attitude Fancy has toward other cats. I signed up to foster at Dumb Friends League and I really think they are considering me for cats rather than dogs. Not sure I care which, but it would be nice to have a dog around again that I can work with on walks and such.

The lady I talked to today said that they get a lot of cattle dogs there. I have never noticed that before, but I know they have a lot in foster now. I guess they also get a lot of mother cats that are either about to have kittens or just had kittens so need fosters for them.

Fancy was making a lot of not very nice noises and atacting the storm door. So I went to see what the problem was. I think she was saying, long haired fluffy gray cats with blue eyes can't come in the house. I have never had so many stray cats around here and they all know were the front door is and use their claws to try and open it. Some have gotten the door open only to be greeted by a a mean nasty tabby cat. That is normally a sweet loving kitty, but she isn't sharing her house with any other cat.

I bought Terra Bait today. It's going to take a few days--the "marching" line in the bathroom starts by coming from under a corner of the floor board, traveling across the threshold between the carpet tile and bedroom carpet, goes to the door jamb, climbs up the wall on the farther side of the jamb, crosses over to the sink and then bee lines over to the bait where it splits up (I spilled some on the counter). In the living room, I put one down on the carpet near the wall and they seemed to like it and then set down her cat place mat and her wet food, thinking they would leave the food alone, but no they attacked it and i had to flush it down the toilet. It'll be a few days before I can do that. It takes longer but is very effective because it kills the nest. Harleigh stays away from the stuff--she is a cat, she doesn't have taste buds for "sweet",

Most ants nest in the ground and come up to eat. When I have ants I get the ground around the house treated. It doesn't have to be the super treatment you do for termites, but the theory is the same. I know that pets don't eat ants, they don't like the taste.

That light bulb problem would be what I'd have.

I don't know if it would work for ants, but I have a lot of flies around here. A friend was told to use bowls of orange juice which will attract the flies ad they drown in it. Got rid of most of them. I have read something else for ants, but not sure it would work around cats or dogs. I think it had to do with flour and sugar substitute (not the xyletol or splenda, but the one that came out before Splenda -- words escaping me again). The sugar substitute is supposed to poison the ants.

I tried that with my cat Smokey--those ants were wiley, they managed despite the water to cross over onto her food bowl. I watched, I they formed a "human" ladder, I remember it. I keep seeing ads on TV for SCJohnson Roach (and Ant) spray being safe for pets...I don't know if that's a good idea or not. I generally use Terra Bait as safe for my cat, but I place them on the window sills, they usually invade that way or from the floor in the bathroom. I will deal with it soon. Also, as if this has anything to do with cats, all the light bulbs are burning out at the same time. So light bulbs are now on my shopping list as well.

his won't kill the ants, but depending on what your cat will tolerate, put the fod bowl in a pan of water just a bit bigger then the fod bowl

I have ants coming into my apartment--either in the window sills or on the floor, traveling in the carpet. I can't leave my cat's food out over night or place it on the floor. Her bowls become infested with ants. I can't buy terra bait or a spray until next month or next week at the very earliest. I am leaving her food dishes on my bed and have been using a 50/50 spray of water and cleaning vinegar to kill and deter the ants. The acid kills and repels them, but it doesn't kill the nests.
This is generally a summer problem. It's late in the year for this to be occurring. I think the ants want to escape the noxious air from the fires too. And they're hungry, not thirsty because they leave her water bowl alone.

Orzo has chosen his spot in the master bathroom again, in front of the heat vent. It was 35 today, after yesterday's close to 95. (One place said 93, one said 97). Over the weekend it was 100, 100, and 97 (Friday through Sunday). Snow late this afternoon. I know I wanted cooler weather, but I didn't want to freeze. Other than that spot, Orzo will come in on my lap or sleep with me at night.

When Mom was alive and I had my last cat, Mom was walking out in the back yard and had similar happen, MaryAlice. A brown/gray tabby came up and was walking with her. She looked down and asked, "April, how did you get out here?" Somehow April had gotten out and ran up to her when she asked the other cat that. I think the other cat was from 2 houses up from us. April wasn't supposed to get out, but she was always rushing out when someone opened the door. We would try to catch her and she would take off. Finally gave up trying to catch her and she would always stay in the back yard. I finally got tired and told her to get back in the house one time and she did.

My son who lives in the country got two cats years ago, a shy female an a male. Both were altered, both indoors. The male started to not use the litter box, so he became an outdoor cat instantly. He hung around the house for a few days then disappeared, probably into the food chain on the mountain. He had a good thing going and blew it.

I live in the country and most of the time unwanted cats are dropped off at a barn out in the fields, hay farmers love it. We have red fox, bob cats and mountain lions in the area so not many stray cats. One reason Fancy is strictly indoor.

Once I opened my door and a strange dog (luckily a small one) ran in my apartment, also had a male cat do that. I got them out before my cat in another room noticed them. People would let their animals roam all over my neighborhood in the time I have lived here, worse at some times than others. I think the other cats smell cat food in my house, at other times I think my cat is sitting in the open window going "ha ha ha--I am here and truly loved and you are not". I have often looked out my back window at a cat sheltering from the rain under the pine, but I am very grateful the bushes were finally trimmed away from the back of the building. Cats used to love to do the mating song under the bush right outside my bedroom window.

Last night after it stared getting dark, but wasn't quite dark, I thought I heard Fancy outside. I looked out the window and there was a tabby cat, Fancy is a tabby, Fancy's size on the porch. Thinking Fancy had gotten out, I opened the wooden door and started to open the screen door when Fancy ran up behind me telling that cat in no uncertain terms this is her house and what she would do if the other cat didn't leave. It must have been a cat that had been in a house. It kept trying to open my screen door and almost seceded a couple times. Might have got the door open if Fancy hadn't been there to make sure it didn't. I closed the wooden door, didn't want a cat fight. I haven't seen the cat today, but an old tom that lives in the woods has been patrolling the area.

I may get lunch from McDonalds today. Just to leave my home! Go thru the drive thru with my worker. Harliegh watched out the dining area window as I took my laundry back and forth to the laundry room this morning.

Our farmers markets are at least twice as much as the stores. There are a few that have "double-up" coupons for SNAP users, so for $10 I can get $20 worth of fruits or vegetables that are grown in Colorado. For the most part that isn't much variety. I think I could also get eggs with that..

I don't eat a lot, though. Yesterday I ate a slice of thin bread with some peanut butter on it before I went to bed and that got me to just over 1000 calories. Before that I was around 900. The day before was 580. Most of the time it's between 700 and 900.

My mom spends $50 a month on food. She eats very little meat, next to no prosed foods, mostly fresh fruit and veggies, but says fruit has gotten so expensive she has had to cut back. This time of the year the farmers market is her best friend. Almost everyone out here has a backyard garden and for the most part everyone grows one or two things they are good at and then everyone meets at the market. More food is traded then sold.

I am trying to cook more meals that I can freeze packs of, which is pretty easy because I only have to feed one person, myself. I started thawing chicken in the refrigerator yesterday around noon for a crock pot chicken dish I will start tomorrow morning. It's so hot here i don't want to use the oven at all. I do wish I was eating more vegetables, hardly eating any although i bought a lot of fruit--a pineapple for $2, a pack of kiwi, and 3 lbs of frozen mixed berries. Have to remember I have some left over tomatoes in the crisper drawer when I make dinner. I get tired out now easily too and don't have enough energy because of the heat and my Meniere's Disease to do elaborate complex things. I think I am not eating as healthily as I could, doing "economy" meals.

That is really nice of your neighbor. My neighbors are getting all their tomatoes and cucumbers ripening now, and they are going camping, so before they leave they are going to leave some on my back porch. The cucumbers I am pretty sure will be okay (had at least half a cup of slices in a vinegar/sugar dressing last night and was good). I am going to figure out what I can do with the tomatoes other than maybe freeze some. I think that will be okay as long as I peel them first. I have also gotten help from our church, but a lot of what they have is what I can't eat. During this pandemic they are giving gift cards instead and that has been really helpful because I can get things like toilet paper, laundry soap, cat food.

I feel blessed that so far we haven't needed food stamps. I own my house out right, no mortgage not even any taxes. The Korean lady down the street says seniors no eat chemicals, so has a big garden, an acre, to grow organic food for seniors. If you are over 65 all you have to do is say hi and she will give you what she has.

I agree with you. Not too sure how I'm going to make it later. They had really cut mine at the beginning of the year when we got a SS raise. You get $15 or $20 more and they take away $65 or more from your food stamps. Then everything else you have to pay for goes up by that $15-$20 a month.

My vet has had a rule for years that cats have to be in carriers.

I still feel awful, I'll call the doc again this morning.

That's pretty sad, MaryAlice. I guess there are many rural places it happens, though, and people have to drive a long way to see a vet for their animals.

My vet is also on the schedule where they take your pet in. You call from your car when you arrive and someone will eventually come out and get your pet. I guess all of them here are except the ones in Petsmart and Petco. Those you can walk in. I think my vet is still open on Saturday mornings, but now it is by appointment only. Before that day was for walk-ins.

When Orzo had his tumor surgery she used the glue for stitches. That is what she was showing me when Orzo stuck his back up for petting. Crazy cat. At least he likes the vets and the techs down there and doesn't ever give them a problem. I won't take him except in a carrier, though. There have been cats lost from people taking them to the vet during the pandemic with a collar instead of a carrier and the cats got out of their collar or spooked the tech in one case. (Haven't heard that at the clinic I take Orzo to. I think they require cats in carriers.)

The vet was getting up in age and wanted to retire, He had put the business up for sale and his daughter was keeping it going while they looked for a buyer. They thought they had one and the virus hit and the buyer backed out. The daughter felt she should be home with her family, so they closed down.

There was another vet in town. but I have never been to it, but everyone I have talked to says a child treats a stuffed toy better then they treat the animals, they charge an outrages amount and are very rude to the customers. With people willing to drive into the big city rother then deal with them they aren't doing so good.

I'm hoping a grad student will see the situation and take one of the offices.

That's terrible, MaryAlice. We must have a dozen vets here nearby, lots of people, lots of pets. The only way to keep a business going.

Sunny, my vet is doing that too and has been during COVID. When I've taken the cats into the office, I meet the tech at the door and I have to wait in the car while they examine the cat, and then the vet calls me on the phone and talks to me about what needs to be done. They used to be open Saturday mornings from 8 - 12 which was great with my work schedule but they're not even doing that now. They are still open 9 am - 5 pm M - F, but that's when I'm scheduled to be at work. I will have to go in late one day and get off early or leave for a short time during the day to go pick him up. I will call and see what they say tomorrow. It may be several weeks before I can get an appointment, so hopefully the stitches will fall out during that time (my fingers are still crossed).

My veterinarian's office (CARE Animal Hospital) used to be open Monday-Saturday. Then they stopped on Saturdays and past 6 pm because there was a robbery. Then if you had to pick up a medication or some other supply you could come on Saturdays and an attendant would bring it out to you. NOW because of COVID-19 they are only open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday and you can't come in. You hand your pet over to the assistant in the parking lot. They had that one person could now come in to the exam room, but I think they reversed that as well.

I had a lovely afternoon nap with Tang with the A/C chugging away today. He was very lovey too and was so happy to cuddle with me.

I have to call the vet about Tang next week. He had his surgery to remove that cyst on his hip over a month ago. I thought the vet said they did dissolvable stitches, but his stitches are still there and I think they would have been gone by now. They don't seem to bother him but they really need to be removed. I will just have to take some time off of work to do it, though. But, it has to be done... So I'll call on Monday. The office used to be open on Saturdays but is closed on the weekends right now.

Yesterday I took Orzo to get his nails trimmed yesterday and also got him weighed. He has gained 1/2 pound since April. Yay. He is still pretty skinny, but I don't think he will gain much more. He had a different tech to work on him yesterday who said he was a sweetie.

I got the test results back, it's a viral bowel infection, which means in the current climate, probably covid. The doc says no sense in getting tested, I'll need to get a negative test at some point, whether I had it or not.

Wizardhowl, Orzo will continue to yowl, loudly, for an hour after he first asks for the food. Then he will leave and have some dry food and come back a couple hours later. Meanwhile I can't get back to sleep.

It's a good thing I don't have to do something special for the cats right now, I'm so sick I can barely manage myself. They don't pay much attention to me as long as food appears on time.

@FANCYQTR Felix woke me up last week one night around 1:30 am for a midnight feeding. I had to feed him or he wouldn't be quiet. Ugh!

The cats are back to dry food now, as Tang's mouth should be healed for the dental surgery (it's been over two weeks). They are all happy to have their "crunchies" again, which I do think they like better than the wet food. They each get a small spoonful of wet food in the evening. Cookie hasn't been eating much recently. I think it's too hot. She just kinda looks at the food and looks at me like, "No... too hot." She is still drinking water and going potty and hasn't lost weight so I'm not worried. I have to give her medication in her food though, and I might try to do that early in the morning instead of at night because she seems at little more hungry at 4 am. But I keep forgetting because I'm not exactly awake at 4 am!
