Hi Ya'll, I'm fixing to a) write a blog and b) blatantly "steal" and enter the various Garlic Salad recipes into the SparkRecipes area... so if you know of any other good blogs or recipe versions, I'd like to put them in. It may take a while, as I have a printout of a Garlic Salad recipe that one of our friends gave us. She used to work for MBPXL which later turned into Excel, the meat processors and she was one of the liasons that took meat orders from the various restaurants. I'm thinking her recipe was the one supposedly from Doc's or maybe from Uncle Abe's (both long gone.).

Here's the best blog with recipes that I know of - a former Wichitan who lives elsewhere (I forgot, will see it again when I re-read this blog - which, amazingly, is still updated, some 5-10 years after I first found her blog!!):

oh and since I have moved back, I go often cause my dad and sister love the place.

What I do is, I only eat half the bun if that, I take most the bun off, and ask them to load it with pickles (not good for low sodium, but I have very very low blood pressure-80/50 usually scares most nurses! lol), and lots of onions. This is low calorie and helps fill me up more. I have one or two of some one else's onion rings, and a taste of some one's rootbeer. And that's about it.

I almost died from diabetes, went into DKA 12 years ago, so to be honest it's not hard for me to be moderate after that. At the same time I don't deny myself, I just tell myself I can have more another time, this is NOT my last meal.

I'm for moderation, that's how I lost most my weight and gotten my diabetes under control.

However, I must say, as much as I love nuway, after I lived in NYC for 11 years, and hadn't been eating there, and have been eating really healthy mostly, it gave me really really bad gas, like I thought I was dying of something I was in so much pain! lol haha I still liked it though. lol But, as for pop, yeah after you don't drink it for a while, it taste really horrible. I don't like it any more either.

Heh. Know what you mean, although this last time I just had the burger, no cheese, small garlic sale, small malt. No onion rings or rootbeer. Tasted son's root beer and it didn't taste good this time, which was strange. I think it's been a good 6+ months since I last ate at NuWay and longer than that since I've had onion rings... too much heartburn!

Honestly.. I don't go there!! That's how I landed in the hospital at 230lbs.. I occasionally eat Subway..that's about it! I was put on low sodium by my doctor...my blood pressure was high. All fast food is loaded..so I got out of that habit! I still don't feel comfortable eating fast food or processed dinners (lean cuisines) Etc. Besides I have no will power....I couldn't walk into Nuway & not eat a bunch onion rings or drink a root beer!

For places like this, and really let's just face it any food you personally don't make, as there has been a lot of places that even give false nutrition stats any way, time and again! So.... you have three choices when you are eating out-

1) Try to compare like foods, and approx your calories. IE The garlic salad is probably pretty close to the calories of most cole slaws. The burgers, depending on the size, and how much of the bun you consume probably approx same calories as same amount of meat and bun at other burger joints, however, I have to assume that the meat is steamed or boiled, so it may have slightly less grease and fat....and maybe even less calories, but I would still just to be on the safe side count as about the same as other places. Then the onion rings, french fries, malts etc. Again I would go with the average calories of same size portions of same like foods that are listed on calorie king or such.

2) Go to these places, and try to order on the healthy side. Have a small nu-way, take part of the bun off. Only eat one or two onion rings, and drink diet soda (yeah means no special rootbeer! UHG!) or water. And again try to just aim for approx calories that other places have listed for like foods.

3) Don't worry about it and just let this be a once in a great while treat. Don't go stark crazy at it, but just eat the rest of your meals for the day/week/month clean and healthy and not sweat the special once in a great while meal at such a place.

Ahhhhj I'm so bad, but I had a lovely lunch at Nu-Way this afternoon. As you all know, Nu-Way is a uniquely Wichita dining tradition with all these "top secret" formulas for garlic salad, the burgers themselves etc - has anyone found a truly reliable source of nutritional data for the various foods Nu-Way serves? Royal malt?

I will be doing penance ....
