I burn over 500 calories everytime i work out, i just work my ass off and I just am already kind of husky strong body type, I just dont know why my goal is set so high, i always wonder how did I hit that goal when i first begun working out? it never changes its always between 5.20 to 5.50 but rarely do i hit those goals. Weight loss has a lot to do with what you eat which i have been horrible with working at a pizza joint so have just been maintaining my weight. What I dont understand is on one machine I was doing great on all of a sudden i get orange on it everytime i just seem to be doing worse on it, maybe if i work out more it will go back to green? Just is hard I notice when i start my work out on different machines it seems to mess it up more sometimes i do better sometimes i do worse I honestly dont know what the science is is with the Curves Smart but for me this workout works out the best, Its not too hard but not too easy, time flies and i definitely sweat a ton and feel like its working

Thanks Live-Love-Laugh!! That helps a LOT!

Another curiosity of mine (and this comes after an incident at Curves)...
Does it REALLY matter on the adductor/abductor machine where you get on/off of it?
One of the employees said that if we didn't get on/off from the middle, it messes up the machine (the SMART part). She even went so far to say that it will affect other machines down the line. For instance, the ad/ab machine is one board and one machine away from the stepper recovery station. On that particular day, the stepper showed me as having a heart rate of 186--which is fairly close to anerobic for me (only get that high in spin class most of the time). It showed my mom (who had gone through 3 stations before me in the upper 170s (and she wasn't even sweating at that point). The next three machines kept flashing red on mom and wouldn't let her continue (even after she waited through a 10-count--which I've had before--but surprisingly didn't even right after I had the 186). The employee admonished us for not using the ad/ab "correctly" and said our problems stemmed from that. She also said that it didn't matter how many times we scanned the machine after it started the 10-count--it still wouldn't let us continue (again, only mom had problems with the countdown; I never got the flashing red and countdown)

EEEZMAMA ~ I will do my best to expalin it.

The machines at Curves are hydrolic. You don't actually move a certain weight like if you picked up a 5 lb dumbbell for example. The more repititions you do on the machine, or the faster you work out, the more resistance you build up in the hydrolics so it is like "lifting more weight".

In order to stay in the green zone you have to move through the complete machines movement....or you have to do it like you did when the employee set you up on Curves Smart. For example, if you do the legpress machine and you don't push out as far as you did when they set you up on Curves Smart, then you are not going to be in the Green Zone. This is also true for the # of repititions you do on the machine.

Calories burned is always a guestimate....even on treadmills, and ellipticals at other gyms. The reason that you CAN actually burn 500 calories in 30 minutes is that you are doing cardio as well as weight training or resistance training. Weight or Resistance Training burns A LOT of calories.

Curves Smart is set up to have you do your regular (hard as you can) workout only 3 times a week....with days of rest in between the workouts. Workout of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, rest on Tuesday and Thursday. IF you choose to work out 5 or 6 times a week you can, but Curves Smart is set to have to do an easy workout if you just did your regular workout the day before. The reason for this is that most fitness gurus believe that you need to rest your muscle for a day before working it out again. When you work a muscle hard you actually tear the muscle and it needs time to repair. When it repairs if build up on itself....think muscle builder. This is why most muscle builders have a high protein snack right after working out and some have a joint and tissue repair as both will help the muscle heal itself faster. Now, MY THEORY is that a farmer doesn't bale hay on Monday and then can't bale hay on Tuesday cause his muscles need to rest. I also don't believe that most people do not work out hard enough at Curves to need the rest day to heal muscles. Curves HAS to be smart and cautious when it comes to it's members working out though. I am in now way shape or form knocking Curves Workouts. I LOVE CURVES!! I have been a member for MANY MANY years, and worked there for several years as well.

Forgot to say that all machines should be repaired as needed and most Curves callibrate the machines monthly when the change the rotation of the machines in the workout circle.

I hope this helps. If you want further information, there are many useful Curves books written by the owner, and there are great websites too.

Best of Luck to you.

Happy Holidays.

I sort of wish I did understand the science of it better. emoticon
But whether I understand it or not, it sure seems to be working and that is all that matters to me right now.

Sorry I can't really be of any help to you.

What is the science behind Curves Smart?

Some days, it seems like I'm all yellow (or orange) when I'm working as hard (perceived) as I am on the days when I'm mostly green...

What are you "really" lifting when you use the machines? (one of the employees at the Curves I go to says that you are lifting your body weight--which doesn't seem right)

Why are the calorie burn estimates so varied? Even when I'm working out around the same time each day, I can be nearly 100 points different from the previous day--even with similar perceived levels of exertion (and, speaking of calories--know anyone who has burned "up to 500" calories in 30 minutes?? I've never even come close)

Another employee said that if it is your "weight" day (like if you are going more than 3x/week every other day), the machines won't let you work as hard. How is that? She mentioned a site that they (the employees) have access to that we don't (like the info isn't on Curves.com). I'd REALLY like to know these things...

And, how often should the machines be calibrated/checked? A concern I have is for the stepper machine/recovery board that does your heart rate. I have issues getting it to read my heart rate (as do others). Or, it will read really high or really low.

hmm...
