Kali,
I will pray that things continue to fall into place. You are certainly putting in all the footwork. I hope Mark's OT/PT goes well. It sounds like he is well taken care of. That can give you some relief and maybe time to take care of business at home.
I'm glad that you have allergies and not something more serious.

We are okay here. Getting ready for more rain. I actually welcome it (except for the weeds that love it) We have been shopping through Instacart. It is working well. The shoppers are so nice. I always over tip them on the app. They deserve it. Anything I haven't found in the stores (flour, yeast, paper goods........I have been ordering online. I have continued doing yoga and AA meetings on Zoom. My sister and I are using Zoom to chat. I'm able to FaceTime with the boys and the grand kids since we all use iPhones, iPads, and Macbooks. I'm trying to keep a bit of a schedule for myself every day......setting the alarm, getting dressed, making the bed, doing a yoga practice, cooking healthy meals, cleaning, weeding, taking care of projects, walking......
I think I will try to get my sewing machine working. It may be beyond help. But, I'd like to make some face masks. I have a non-sew folding mask that I've made from bandanas and hair ties. But it would be fun to sew some.

Take good care of yourself. I'm always holding you in my heart!

Definitely allergies - have the house open to air it out - much needed. Other than some sneezing and dry eyes all is good.

Conference call went well. They're hoping 2-3 weeks of PT & OT will have him walking 75' (with a walker) and able to independently bathe, toilet, dress and rise from a bed or chair. They also will contact me weekly. I may ask that they add stairs in case we don't have another living option by then. May be difficult to find a pet friendly rental but we'll see how that goes. Realtor coming tomorrow to talk about value (keep your fingers crossed) and developing a plan.
I'm trying to keep calm as so far, things have really fallen into place but when I thing about the mountain of 'stuff' to deal with, I get a little overwhelmed.
emoticon is out, so more yard work is in the plan for today as well as lots of deep breathing.
All is good here - stay safe and healthy! emoticon

Leslie - emoticon fat gone and mating! Can't get better than that.
Glad spring is arriving in CA - my niece and husband are sheltering in place in LA. They've been very careful; he works from home and she finished a free lance project (in time for unemployment) so hope all will be well.
I would love to see a bee swarm - proves the world will go on. We get monarchs although nothing like when we moved in. Planted milkweed and other pollinators to help with their journey.

I'm hopeful the house will sell quickly, although I'm finding all the 'pimples'. Going to contact the painter as it seems a little early for some of the exterior paint to fail. Also thinking about contacting 'Patch Pros' as the house has settled over the years.
Working the yard (moving all the fall leaves to the fence line) and woke to a slight sore throat and sniffles - cancelled the 18 mo car service and delivery of some pain ointment to be safe. Took some zicam and am feeling better, so I'm guessing it was (and will be) an allergic reaction.

Team meeting @ 10:30, so will learn more about how Mark is doing and plan going forward.

Stay safe and healthy!

Kali,
I'm glad that Mark is feeling better each day and that he is being well taken care of. That must give you a sense of peace. I bet your beautiful home will sell quickly. All of the good energy you have put into it over the years will emanate and flow from it.

I just finished my daily yoga on Zoom. Another beloved instructor from the studio I used to belong to before it went out of business is starting a Zoom practice. So that will be so nice. I miss that studio so much, despite having connected my new instructor and yogis.

Life is good here too. The weather is starting to warm. We have our spring bee swarm that stops here every year and forms a giant football sized mass in our hedge, rests, and then moves on. Pretty spectacular. Also the painted lady butterflies are beginning their migration from Mexico, I think. They often fly in such huge swarms that we would run into them with the car and feel so awful. Felt like a massacre. But, they are pretty amazing. They fly as far north as their fat stores will carry them and then mate.
Maybe I should consider flying north until my fat stores disappear. Ha Ha Ha. (The mating thing wouldn't work)

Sending love!!!

Leslie - emoticon what a trial and super response. Here's to getting sober, quitting smoking and handling stress!
Amazing those hereditary conditions - mine is osteoarthritis and aching hands. But, given all the marvelous gifts, I'll take it.

Mark seems to be doing better every day (@ least a little more conversant). He doesn't want to FaceTime, but as long as we can talk by the phone, that works for me.

I took Liz for a walk last night (meant to stop in @ a neighbors to tell her our status) but it didn't appear she was home, so we kept going. I knew one house had sold, but found 2 more in the neighborhood and texted our broker friend. Seems this is high season even with the virus, so we'll be working on a plan to 'get-er done'. Looking forward to the staging estimate and staging advice as well as recommendations for selling stuff.
All is good in NE emoticon - Hope the same can be said for CA. Stay safe and healthy!

Kali,
I am so glad you are finding calm as you move through the ongoing changes. That is a testament to your spirituality, strength, and perseverance. You are such a good example.
How is Mark doing as of this weekend?

My heart attacks were due to vascular spasms in the heart. The arteries spasmed closed due to chemical imbalances (calcium/potassium). I did smoke occasionally, and I was still drinking but I didnt have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Heart issues are very prevalent in our family. I was working full time, raising the 3 boys, and not taking good care of myself. I think many factors contributed. I was also going through early and severe menopause in my late 30s and 40s. The best things Ive done is get sober, quit smoking (immediately) begin to exercise and take care of my stress and overall health. Ive been on the same medications since my second bout......about 30 years now. Seems to be working.

Take good care of yourself. I know you are!!!!!

Leslie - I had no idea you suffered heart attacks and hope I can use you as a resource as Mark starts to heal.
I agree PD and MSA-P are the pits, but interestingly I'm starting to feel more centered about the situation. Maybe because so many people are offering positive energy and prayers.
emoticon day here, so focusing on inside tasks. Dismantling our 'apartment' on the lower level and returning furniture to original locations. Also will tackle bills and hope to get through the box when Mark ran for city council.

Oh my gosh Kali!! I am so very sorry to hear that Mark has a heart attack. But I’m so glad you were in the right place to get help and now he is in such a wonderful place. I am worried about your well being. It must be so difficult to communicate via FaceTime. I wish there was something I could do. I’m here for you if only through Sparkpeople!!
My ejection fraction has never been “normal since my heart attacks in ‘89 and ‘91. It is in the low 40’s at rest but reaches closer to 55% when I’m exercising. It’s been a few years since I’ve had a treadmill ekg. So I just keep up the walking miles.
I hope Mark is able to get closer to where they want him. PD is a b!#ch! I’ll be here for you. Sending much love and daily prayers.

Bella - emoticon for your lovely wishes

Leslie - wonderful that you're offering citrus to your neighbors and being careful in delivering the delicacies - I can picture Chris in the fields and hope your rain materialized.

I'm beginning to 'dislike' the 24th as we were once again in the ER. Actually, I think it was a blessing because Mark was having a heart attack (which I once again contacted his PD folks before his PCP). Good news is he has a stent that is allowing flow to most of his left ventricle. He's pumping @ 35% and the surgeon is hoping for 40-45% (55% is normal).
He was evaluated by PT & OT and went to rehab www.tabitha.org/senior-care-services
/r
ehabilitation-therapy.html
this morning @ 10:00. The scary part is no visitors until April 6 @ the earliest, but the good part is he's in the best place in town.
I'll be calling later today to find out how to be updated on activities and we'll be communicating via FaceTime.

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you for the well wishes, Bella. That is a beautiful posting. We cannot have too much light, love, and prayer right now.

Kali,
Im glad you are having a bit better days. I hope Marks exercise goes well. Hydration seems to be key to all our health issues. So simple, yet so hard sometimes.
Life is good here. Im picking citrus daily and putting it outside our gate for friends and family who request it. So hard not to have personal contact, but this is sufficing for now. Chris plowed today between rain storms. He looked so happy on his Kabota. Our fields are ready for the rain tonight and tomorrow.
Sending lots of love and caring thoughts, as always.

Leslie - thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers - they are so welcome.

Glad you are staying healthy by meditating and practicing yoga. So many online opportunities may be the start of new ways of life!

Good morning so far. Shower and sleep after a long night. Hoping he'll do a better job @ hydrating and we're starting (again) exercises.

Yes indeed! “All in God’s time”. Never were there truer words.
This is a good time to practice faith, hope and love.
I hope you are both doing okay. These are dire times. I’ve been meditating and praying a lot.
My yoga instructor has started daily online yoga classes using Zoom. It is really helpful. I can see all my fellow yogis and chat with familiar friends and practice daily.

Silver Lining: I guess we will all get very creative in how we socialize and carry out business.

I think about and pray for you and Mark daily.
You are both such dear people. Stay well!
Peace!!!

You must feel so proud and healthy!

I so appreciate your prayers for Mark's strength - with the mitigation guidelines in place the only thing we still have on the schedule is his PT and I'm hopeful that can continue not only for the stretching and socialization, but the other voices suggesting what he needs to do to maintain. I've made a couple runs to the Sam's pickup, but otherwise we're staying in.
I haven't calmed to the point of reading a good book, but am finding gathering and categorizing items to sell is soothing. I also talked with a local charity to take Mark's business clothing as I would hate to see his suits, shirts and ties sold for rags. It may be a while before they are ready to take them, but as Mother Theresa said, "All in God's good time".

Stay well and happy my friend!

Hi Kali,
I understand the money concerns with the uncertainty of his progression. I'm sure that is a concern. It is the not knowing that is so difficult. We have started being more mindful of our finances as we start to see more ongoing health issues. Chris also worries about alzheimers since it is so very prevalent in his family. I'll pray for Mark to continue to have the mobility and strength for the stairs.

Today is my 18th sobriety anniversary. I'm headed to a women's meeting in a few minutes to take a chip and celebrate with sober friends. I have to say that I'm worried that we should be more vigilant at meetings about touching, sanitizing, and not holding hands to pray etc.... So far meetings are not cancelled. People really value their sobriety. That's a good thing. Just need to take healthy steps.

Sending you more love and compassion.

Thank you Leslie.

I am starting to gather (and clean) items for sale. It's amazing that the virus is giving me time to find, catalogue and photograph items prior to listing them on Craigslist. I've considered looking into Amazon to sell our books, but also considering just giving them to the library. I hate to say money is important (maybe for the first time as I've lived a blessed life) since we don't know the level or length of care necessary. I'm just hoping Mark can continue to navigate the steps until we are close to selling.
We shall see.
Your blessings, friendship and listening mean the world to me.
Hope all is good with you and Chris!

Oh my gosh Kali!
I’m at a loss for words. So much new information to digest. I can’t even imagine how you are feeling. Thank you for the link. I have never heard of this type of atrophy. That certainly confuses and complicates the Parkinson’s symptoms and treatments. I guess if there is a silver lining, it is that the more information the better. The best I can do is be here as a listening ear.
Your plan to move near family is a good one. It looks like you are beginning the process of “downsizing” things that no longer serve either one of you. That is hard but may give you a sense of some control in a situation that must make you feel so helpless. But helpless you are not! You are making so many proactive decisions for you and Mark.
Breathing, staying present, finding gratitude, and focusing on love are certainly powerful. I hope you are being kind and gentle with yourself. You have my greatest admiration and love. I’m here for you.
Bless you and Mark!

Leslie - thanks for the good thoughts and wishes. Glad San Diego was a good trip and you too have health professionals in times of 'need'.

It's been a rough 2 weeks interlaced with doctor visits and new diagnoses. It seems Mark may have MSA-P www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/Patient-
Ca
regiver-Education/Fact-Sheets/MultipR>le-System-Atrophy
which is a quickly progressing disease with poor prognosis. He'll undergo an autonomic test in July (amazing how long it takes to get into the Med Center) which won't confirm the disease, but confirm some of the suspected symptoms.

On the good news front, he had a second steroid shot in his right hip bursa and a prescription for a topical anti-inflammatory for pain. The docs are also reducing his medications (seems levodopa may not be effective) and not contemplating back surgery but relying on the baclofen. We'll be getting a handicap sticker for the car as we continue to go to PT as his comfort allows.

We're selling his car and guns (they just left the house) and I'm researching selling on Craigslist - lots of sports equipment and tools we no longer need. Our current plan is to sell the house next spring and relocate close to Portland where my sis' kids live. I've started to research CCRCs, but thinking our best approach might be apartment living while we investigate options.

I'm doing a lot of deep breathing and trying to stay in the present, but it's proving difficult as the stock market takes a dive and our net worth decreases... Not to mention my gym closing for the virus.

Our situation is definitely a 'test' of my belief everything happens for the best, but so far so good.
Thanks for your friendship - I will remember to check the site more often if for nothing more than to list my daily blessings.

Hi Kali.
I’m home from San Diego. It was a great trip except I felt a UTI coming on Thursday. So I drove home in the late afternoon and went straight to our urgent care (about 20 minutes from home). It took 3+ hrs. to get there (rush hour). They were efficient and lovely as always. I just love them. Then to the pharmacy and home.
I’m feeling better today and it didn’t spoil my time with Liam.
I’m sorry nights are still rough for Mark. That means sleep deprivation for you too. I hope your medication tweaks are making a difference. Good to keep records so you can run them by the medical folks. I’m sure they appreciate all the feedback you give. Several of the drugs you mentioned rang a bell from when I had students with CP and spina bifida.
I agree, you will need lots of self care to maintain physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional strength. I’m really bad at asking for help. I hope you are better than I am. Support is so important!

Speaking of support, sounds like you are getting just that with your CASA kid. Excellent.

Well, I’m going to put some short ribs in the instant pot for Chris. He found a sugar free hickory bbq sauce he likes so I’ll add that to the pot.
Sending more love!

A fire during a rainy day sounds perfect. We still have a lot of firewood as our winter has been mild. We're 7" down from normal, so I can only hope we aren't headed for another drought.
Have to say I'm living vicariously through your 'grandma' thing.
emoticon
We had a bad night last night. I bought a walker to get from bed to bath and can't tell you how glad I am that he's left it in the bedroom today. I'm a mind over matter gal and while he's got a lot more active mind work (like remembering what muscles control walking), every time he exercises the grey matter, he has a better day.
I've also researched the baclofen and clonazepam and we're now taking one during the day and one @ night. (I don't want to 'practice' medicine, but the 3x/day gives little instruction.) Both relieve the spasms and as they are different types of drugs, it seems ineffective to combine them. We'll have a week's worth of data as we see his PD APRN next Tuesday.
I'm starting to get that medicine is an inexact science...
So glad I was able to get to emoticon and emoticon and emoticon this morning because if 'this' is not temporary I need all the strength I can muster.
On another note, I'm delighted my CASA squeaking wheel is getting the grease. We are meeting with school officials and our juvenile court team to discuss academic plans for our kid. It's way too much to ask a 16 year old to remedy all the problems by herself...
Sending blessings your way - your emoticon ship means the world to me.

HA HA. Glad Im not confused...........Im confused a lot lately.
But, the spine fusing does sound very drastic. Im glad you are getting lots of opinions. It must be mind boggling and frustrating, to say the least.

Were you able to get out a bit this weekend? I hope so. A change of scenery and activity can be so beneficial.

We actually had rain and drizzle most of the weekend. So we lit a fire and stayed in. I did some cooking for Chris that can be frozen into batches. Hes been working on his diabetes glucose levels again and has had great success getting them back down to good levels in just a week or so. Im proud of him for continuing to at least try to do whats necessary to take care of things that he can control. As you know way too well, there are so many things we cant control with health and life.

Tomorrow morning I meet with a sponsee who is really doing well with sobriety, but is struggling with her PTSD from her time in Iraq and Syria and also her bi-polar. She is such a model of strength and does EVERYTHING to help her situation. She is a wonderful mom, wife, and now a good new friend. She inspires me.
At noon we are meeting an old friend, a secretary at one of the schools where Chris was a principal. Were meeting for lunch. We got very close to her and her dear husband back in the 80s when we would go country western dancing at least once a month. Her husband died of brain cancer about 5 years ago after a long battle. We have tried to stay in touch the best we can. She is so lovely.

On Wednesday and Thursday Ill be in SD babysitting Liam. Shaun and Kirsten want to go to a concert on Wednesday night so Im going to keep Liam out of day care and play for a couple of days. They can have a little date and I can enjoy grandma-ing.

Sending you love and support as always. I hope your week has begun well.

Leslie - yoga and emoticon food - perfect!

You weren't confused (or I am now...)
The neurosurgeon visit was a 2nd opinion before going to the Med Center March 6. Doc took some X-rays of Mark standing and bending which showed a little more impingement, but he was convinced the nerve compression was not causing the leg issues. He kept focusing on sciatica, which the Med Center already ruled out, snd said treatment would require fusing the entire spine.
emoticon
Everything we've read (granted on the internet) talks about minimally invasive surgery. Good thing this guy doesn't operate any more... He's going to review with the 'hot-shot' surgeon in his office and send us the results + X-rays, so we @ minimum have additional data, which makes the visit a good one.
Met with our accountant and as usual owe taxes, but I'd rather have my money work for me as long as possible.

Mark had a difficult morning, so I missed my Early Bird session. Going to my Mindfulness class @ 11:00 and then PT this afternoon. Weekend temps are predicted in the 50s so hopefully we'll go for a ride. At minimum we'll do some outdoor sitting in the sun!

Hi Kali,
The neurosurgeon is for you. I was confused. Let me know how it goes.

I went to a yin yoga workshop at my instructor’s house. We had a pot luck after. Many of us are vegetarian or vegan so we all felt so healthy afterwards. The dishes everyone made were really yummy.

Our weather has been really nice. We’ve stayed in the 60’s and low 70’s. So no excuses for not doing yard work or exercising.

Thank you for your wonderful thoughts about my friend. As always it’s a good time to evaluate my daily motives and intentions.
Sending you peace!

Leslie - so sorry to hear about your dear friend and sending you uplifting thoughts during your time of sadness. May her journey bring you some solace as you are there to give her your love.

Glad you are feeling better. I'm blessed to be headache free, but can relate (a little) as my sis had pull the blinds migraines. It sounds like your gentle walk was just the trick.

Neurosurgeon consult is tomorrow morning & I'll be sure to let you know the recommendation. Looking so forward to April - My intention (and affirmation) is resolution of the back problems and a new journey of rebuilding strength.

Ha Ha! Yes, I was definitely ahead of myself. You are so right intentions and affirmations are so healing.
I'm anxious to hear what the neurosurgeon has to say. So many decisions with a disease that is so unpredictable. I so admire your continued courage, both of you!

I felt a little punk yesterday with one of my more severe headaches all day, so I just took it easy and skipped yoga and my walk. But, today I feel better so I walked, grocery shopped, and did some laundry. In a few hours I intend to go to yoga. Chris just got home from golf so it's a good day.

I'm getting better and better at staying in the day, not getting ahead of myself, and staying grateful.
We just found out that a dear friend that we've known since college was diagnosed with cancer 2 weeks ago. She has inoperable tumors on every organ of her body. Her life expectancy is 3 months. We worked together 40 years ago in our district. She was an amazing counselor at our high school and I was a special ed teacher there. She and her husband have kids our kids ages and have been married about as long as we have. I'm so deeply saddened about this news.
She is one of the good people on this earth.

Well, I'm staying in gratitude and keeping you two in prayer! Big Hug!

Leslie - emoticon Definitely a little ahead of yourself, but with both of us 'planning' a visit - those intentions and affirmations are healing!
Love your fun day - it sounded perfect for grands and your son (not to mention you and Chris). Simple pleasures aren't so simple are they?

Mark's having a tough time, so I'm really happy we see a neurosurgeon Thursday. It doesn't speed the appointment @ the Med Center, but having a second opinion in our pocket will help.

Kali,
I will continue to send up the prayers and good thoughts for medication balancing. Self diagnosis is very difficult, I agree, but I do appreciate doctors who value my insights on my own body. It is so nice when it is a team approach.

We had such a fun day with the Paloma, Rory, and Ryan. Salina was sick so we encouraged her to stay home and take some personal quiet rest time. We played basket ball, ate pizza, rode the mini bike, and shot bb guns at targets and bottles. Oh, and they rode the tractor. Paloma looked around our acreage slowly and said, "Grandma..........don't ever sell this place!"
It was so cute. Later, Ryan said, "I get so involved in being an adult and a parent I forget that mini bikes and bb guns are as fun at 39 as they were at 9!" Ahhhhh, the simple pleasures.

It's exciting that you would consider making So. Cal a stop when you travel again. Wouldn't it be fun to meet??? We have plenty of room for you to stay. We have Palm Springs and Big Bear within an hour drive either to the desert or the mountains. Ooooops, I'm getting ahead of myself, Ha Ha!

Have a great Sunday evening and beginning to a new week.
I'm off to an AA meeting.

Leslie - Love your new profile picture!

Your girl therapy sounds perfect. I will get back to seeing my 'chicks' this spring.
Enjoy your weekend with the kids. I'm hoping we can get back to traveling and see our west coast crew in Portland. Love the Cascades, so starting an affirmation to include a visit to you in my 'future' trips.

I'm convinced (or perhaps biased) that using the RLS descriptor led to the wrong drugs. I'm also a little concerned that we've 'lost' a neuron protector (ragasline) which doesn't appear to have the peripheral edema side effects. Not sure we can add it back to the regimen, but hoping to.
(Scary to self-diagnose...)

Thank you for your continued friendship - means so much to me!

Kali,
So much balancing that is continuing for Mark (and you). I can only imagine how frustrating it must be. I have been on some gabapentin for neuropathy in my face and feet (and restless legs). It helps, but it does cause imbalance and, for me, also memory issues. I have reduced my dose this past year. So that's good. Ahhhhhhh the aging process. It's not pretty.

I had a good visit with my friends, Jan and Sue, yesterday in Temecula. We talked non-stop for 4 hours. "Girl Therapy"........cheaper than a therapist. Ha Ha.

Have a good weekend. We hope to see Ryan, Salina, and the kids this weekend for some fun.

Leslie - emoticon sounds so good for your yard and body (not to mention your soul).
Glad you got some rain, we could use some precipitation. We're in for a deep freeze tomorrow, but just one day and back to above average temps.

Your good wishes are greatly appreciated and I'm convinced are helping us. Mark is very frustrated, so I'm glad I didn't change the appt. with his APRN. Three weeks is a long time to wait...
The great news is his diuretic is lessening the swelling in his feet and has totally reduced the swelling in his lower legs! His blood pressure is lower (1st use of diuretic) but still within good range. We follow up with his PCP the day after his PD visit and are hoping to get rid of his gabapentin. It was prescribed for restless legs and may be a culprit in his imbalance.

Hope all is good with you and yours!

I hope you got out and Liz got to play. Sending good wishes to Mark!

Our front door looks so much better. It took the painter 3 days working around some wind. He really did a lot of prep work.
We’re actually happy with our last paint job on our old wood siding. It has actually stood up for a couple of years so far. We have repainted so many times in the 44 years here.
Yesterday I spent 3 hours weeding. My buns, legs, and shoulders are really feeling it today.
Too bad weeds aren’t prettier. They grow so abundantly.
We’re actually going to get some rain today.
Yay us!
Wishing you a Sunday filled with peace and ease!!!

Leslie - I can so relate to long lists and the joy of finishing each task.
We have some exterior paint touch-ups this spring. (A little disappointed as the house was just repainted, but that's time and weather...)
We have a well (no longer functioning) attached to the toilets in the house, so we have the back flow preventer checked each year. I've asked for a price to replace a toilet with either an 18 or 20" height as well. Keep your fingers crossed it doesn't cost an arm and leg.

Hoping to get out (and not to shovel snow). Liz could use some 'hunting' time.

Your OLLI classes look perfect. What a great couple of months of mindfulness work. Good timing.
We enjoyed the Super Bowl today. We were by ourselves but made it a quiet party. It was fun. I hope you had a good day, too.
Tomorrow and Tuesday we have hired a painter to re-do our very weathered front door and side-light. That is a project we procrastinated. Such a long list with this old house.

Have a great week. Hope your weather is cooperating and allowing you some outside time.

Me too - although it takes me a LONG time to get there...

First OLLI class today - Our Mindfulness: From State to Trait - "Welcoming one's awareness of ongoing experience may take place every once in a while for anyone, and may become a more typical way of living for each of us, through short-term practice or more intensive training programs. We may go from occasional mindfulness to leading a more mindful daily life. As we develop the ability to attend, decrease affective bias and promote self-regulative living, we may decease suffering, anxiety, pain, sorrow and addictive behaviors and lead more satisfying personal relationships with others. We will consider psychological and neurological processes in the development of more mindful life-styles and share evidence demonstrating their benefits."

Instructor/Facilitator: Wil Hass, professor emeritus, Argosy University, and OLLI member

Jan 31: Mindfulness, the very idea: getting our thoughts on the same page

Feb 7: Some kinds and ways of meditating

Feb 14: Basic psycho-neuro-immunology of our minds

Feb 21: Mindfulness with pain and affective and anxiety disorders

Feb 28: Mindfulness with addictive conditions

Mar 6: A more mindful life? What do you think??

Looking forward to it!

Glad you've had a healthy week. I too am trying to cook more with less processed food.
I have to admit, I'm a little green about all your citrus, but what a wonderful use of the abundance - fresh food and vitamin C for those in Need.

The south facing walks and drive are cleared. The walks are dry. but there's a thin glaze on the drive. No sun today, but 34 degrees may result in drying.
I'm following "A Year for You" and incorporating Chopra's "Day-Night Guide to Feeling Better" in the 365 day practice. So far, so good.

Good morning Kali,
I hope your week went well. Maybe you were able to get outside, with the pup too.
How is Mark feeling this week? I hope sleep has been his friend.

It has been a good week for us. We have been focusing on staying on track with our exercise goals and eating more healthily. It is a forever challenge. I have to say we have been better and better the past years at cooking at home and minimizing eating out. Really, there is no excuse now that we are retired. We have been trying to shove our never ending citrus on friends, family, and neighbors. Twice a year it all ripens at once.......oranges, tangelos, grapefruit, lemons, limes.... I am hoping to give some bags to our local family assistance and food banks if they will take it. I take it to yoga and AA meetings. Luckily we are having a warm streak here so it is easy to get out and pick.

Well, I had better get off this iPad and get some chores done. Sending love and peace your way.

Mixed emoticon and emoticon this morning - warm enough to shovel this afternoon, so I will get outside. The pup will love it too. PT later today, but otherwise no commitments here either.

I bet you do miss getting outside during the cold and snowy weather. I have to remember to not take our mild temps for granted. We often wish for more rain here in So. Cal. for obvious reasons, but when the rest of the country is buried, we must remember to be grateful.

Yay, I'm glad you got to ST and yoga today. Give and take is so important for you to preserve your health and sanity too. I'm sure the end of March will come none too soon for a game plan for the stenosis.
Massage is a great therapeutic treat for both of you. But, I can only imagine what it's like to drive in those conditions, especially when mixing snow with rain. Icy roads would really frighten me.

Good day for me. I met with a sponsee this morning. I did some cleaning, laundry, and made it to another yoga class. This week is relatively unencumbered so I'm enjoying the rest time.

Glad the trip was fun. I guess it goes without saying I'm jealous about golfing weather...
More emoticon and emoticon on the way.

Took time to go to strength training and yoga this morning although I had to 'hurry' Mark so I could get the pup to Camp Bow Wow - always feel a little guilty but there has to be some give and take...
Met with his PT yesterday and reviewed the Friday MRI - major bilateral stenosis confirmed so hopefully we'll have a gameplay by the end of our March appointment. Headed to massage (took me forever to get him to go) this afternoon and other than navigating ice covered roads it should be good.

Ha ha. Yes, bringing home more furniture to store is definitely anti down-sizing, which is the path we’ve been on too. But the trip was fun. We got home late last night and both crashed until morning. Chris golfed today and I cleaned and ran errands. I’m headed to yoga tonight even though my brain is trying tell me to stay inert. I will triumph. Could use the stretching!

Such great news about the PD doc’s success! Hooray! I had to look up the EMG test. That sounds like it could give some good information.

Your esophageal test sounds interesting too. Glad they are gathering lots of information so you can make the best decision. But I’m sorry you have to go through this.

Well I enjoy our chats and continue to send good thoughts!
Huge hug!!!

Leslie - emoticon for your emoticon They are much appreciated.
Your San Diego day sounds wonderful - I love living vicariously through our chats, although I don't envy your adding furniture to your 'collection' (still trying to downside...)

I think our PD doc has the medications right. We'll need to see what the MRI finds, but the muscle relaxer has the mini-spasms under control.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
We have the EMG scheduled for Feb 24 and his follow-up for March 3, so focusing on building strength in the interim.

My next tests are esophageal manometry and 24 hour PH test. I think I'm game even though I'm not a fan of antacids. We shall see.
All good in the 'arctic' the emoticon makes 4 degrees tolerable!

Oh no. I’m sorry about the hiatal hernia. But it’s good they have a diagnosis. Hopefully you can treat it with medication and avoid the surgical route. You’re in my best thoughts.
I’m glad Mark is remaining positive. You two are my heros.
Oprah says that sometimes she wakes up in the morning and says, “God don’t teach me no lessons today!” I bet that would apply to you guys lately.

We’re headed to San Diego tomorrow for the day. It will be fun to see all the guys down there. Looking forward to breakfast with Colin and Jess. Then the afternoon with Shaun, Kirsten, and Liam. We are taking the truck so we can bring back an antique dresser that Kirsten’s grandma gave her. They are trying to prepare for the new baby in their smallish apartment so we are going to store it for her. She’s 26 weeks along so the nesting/prep urges have hit, I think.

Take care and know that you are in my prayers!

Amen sista! Especially the aging part...

I had an upper GI Thursday and they found a hiatal hernia, so want to conduct more tests. My symptom is chronic cough and I'm hopeful they can 'treat' it as everything else looks good.

Mark is doing better after some muscle relaxants and a sleeping aid but is still weak especially in the legs. The doc upped his PD meds by half and we're hoping to move slowly in the direction of exercise. He wants to fill his bike tires (on a trainer) today - so attitude is positive!

Good thoughts coming your way.

Im so happy to be there for you as you are for me.
I feel like the lesson is that we survive and thrive when we are willing to adapt to change and and to life spontaneously flexing its muscles. Kind of a paradox, since as we age we have a tendency to get set in our ways yet we are expected to stay flexible and malleable.
Having friends willing to be honest and share the trials makes all the difference.
BIG HUG!

We'll be 4 years behind you this October.

We can definitely relate to modifications and "fighting the good fight". Mark's PD appears to be progressing (something we both want to deny), but he fell yesterday. Landed on his knee which is not swelling or turning black and blue. I've let the Med Center know, so hopefully that will move Mark's review up in the queue.

Regardless, the lesson may be all is for the good.
Sending emoticon and emoticon for being there for me.

Chris has worn hearing aides for 5 years now, so we have developed many strategies that have made my temporary deafness a bit easier. Communication is so important, we have both had to really work hard over the years to keep making modifications. But, modifications are what you know very well.

Today was our 48th anniversary and we had such a nice day. We are so very grateful to be alive and to be still "fighting the good fight", as my dad used to say.

Big hug,
Leslie

emoticon We can relate the hearing questions! Part of Mark’s speech therapy is speaking with intent as part of PD is hurried and quiet talking. I’ve found looking @ each other while speaking adds an extra level to communicating.
Slow progress- but we’re getting there.,.

I am so glad you had a good day. Hope the night was smooth too. I guess we are all getting used to a new normal as we age, but you two have so many added challenges. Im glad you are getting a glimpse of normal. A bit of hope for some recovery.

Im feeling better finally. My GP says that my ear may take 6 weeks to unplug. So I am empathizing with Chris deafness more than ever. A lot of What?? And Huh??

Mark had a really good day. Exercise in the morning helped. He’s actually sleeping upstairs with me tonight, so I’m not sure how restful the evening will be, but it’s another step towards normalization.

Glad to hear you had a fun couple of days. Family is so important! Blessings to you my dear friend.

Kali,
Thinking of you as you honor the passing of your dear friend. Life is precious and fragile.

We had 2 fun days with Paloma and Rory.
We’re tired but satisfied.

Leslie - emoticon and Happy New Year! emoticon emoticon emoticon
I hope Chris feels better.

I couldn't make it to midnight. Mark had a 24 hour PH test (tube and apparatus) so neither of us got much sleep the night before.
Lots of emoticon so the pup stayed in as well. I have an appointment with the same doc on the 9th (chronic cough) so if we don't hear before that, I'll ask for results.

A good friend succumbed to cancer on the 30th. I was glad it wasn't on either holiday, but it will still make the season difficult for his wife. Rosary is Friday and funeral Saturday. Pam sent a New Years card as opposed to Christmas card and it arrived the day of his death. It was a photo of the family @ their son's wedding earlier this year. I have it on the refrig as it's a reminder of happy times.

Hi Kali,
Yes, there is something to be said for a quiet, p.j., cozy holiday. As much as I love the family all home, it is very tiring. I think we are still recovering. Chris caught the cold but seems to be healing. I have an ENT appointment on Thursday so I hope to get some answers about my right ear. Im still not hearing well out of it. I did bloodwork today for an annual physical on Monday. Nice time to have bloodwork done after all the splurging and indulging....Ha Ha.
After my appointment on Thursday I am going to Riverside to pick up Paloma and Rory for a sleep over before they head back to school. That will give Salina and Ryan a nice date night.

Im hoping that you can get some answers to Marks muscle relaxers to enable some good sleep. You are right, that is so important in healing. I bet you need some good sleep as well.

You are a loving and dedicated wife. I admire your strength so much.
Sending love.

Leslie - it sounds like our celebration was the opposite of yours - just the two of us, pajama day and other than a standing rib roast, very low key which was perfect.

I am so grateful for your daily blessings and am certain they are helping speed Mark's renewal. I'm not sure what part of our journey the disease supports, but I am certain all happens for the best and we will grow from its lessons.

Physical and speech therapy continue and we're seeing improvement in both. We're awaiting the doctor's review of the KPG Mark wore to see if there are other times he should take his medications to help with symptoms. I'm hopeful they will prescribe a muscle relaxer that he could take @ night as 4 hours of straight sleep would go a long way to healing...

We shall see.
Blessings coming your way.

Hi Kali,
Our house is quiet as of an hour ago. Shaun, Kirsten, and Liam are headed back to SD. They stayed for 2 nights, Ryan, Salina, and Paloma and Rory were here all day yesterday, as well as Colins best friend from high school, Nick and his girlfriend. (Nick is an only child and has always loved our chaos...We call him our 4th son. His parents call Colin their 2nd son) Colin and Jessica were here Christmas Eve and day with the dogs. So we always had a full house and food round the clock. Chris is asleep in his recliner just pooped. But, he was a wonderful host.

I hope you had a great Christmas. I think of you daily and send prayers every morning for Marks improved health. You are one strong woman and such a role model of dedication and love.

Happy New Year!!!!

Leslie - emoticon you caught the crud, but so glad it's not the flu. We've been fortunate not to be in 'its path', but there's so many folks infected even with the vaccine.

Finishing grocery lists. I used to dread holidays without the extended family, but there's something wonderful about celebrating in your PJs... Not sure about the 50 degree weather, but may get some raking in.

Progress is slow (2 steps forward and 1 back) but it is occurring. Still have not conquered the sleeping issue, but Mark's able to get in and out of the hot tub with minimal assistance and is fairly consistent with therapy exercises. I'm staying 'out of his way' but noting improvements. We're taking mini-trips out, mostly for therapy, but planning Trader Jo's today for goodies!

Sending hugs & love your way!

Oh my gosh Kali, I missed this message updating your new journey. I’m so sorry. I’ve been sparking lightly these past weeks.
I hope Mark’s eating/swallowing plan is going smoothly. So so many changes for you both.

I babysat Liam a week and a half ago and caught his (their) virus. First time in years that I caught a bug from the grands. Broke my grandma streak. Oh well. But this one was vicious. I’ve been in ear drops, eye drops, antibiotics and decongestants. Hoping to do some cleaning and food shopping in the next few days. Healthy grands and kids will come for Christmas, I hope.

I’m glad Wispy is well down under!!!

Sending you oodles of love!

Leslie - what a wonderful 69th emoticon Nothing better than the whole family together.
Glad to hear about your support group friendships - has to be powerful and inspiring.
emoticon 80 degrees! We finally settled into the 50s and so some power emoticon is the order of the day.

We're taking it slow - tough for both of us, but letting dizziness dictate the effort. Therapy is now daily - 3 days of PT and 2 of ST. Completed a swallow study, so we're 'supposed' to thicken liquids with foods and he's only to drink water between meals + meds with pureed applesauce. We haven't thickened food yet - but he's taking pills with the Green Machine (which is thicker). I think he's becoming present while eating, so we'll see how it goes. If it looks like he's not strengthening his swallowing, we will follow the protocol - he'll @ least have great teeth - brushing after each meal followed by swish and spit.
Good news - he emoticon yesterday afternoon - around the neighborhood and to the car wash (just up the street). If he's feeling good this morning, he'll drive to therapy (about a mile away).

Oh my goodness Kali! You both have had a long couple of weeks! So many challenges. I’m sure you are always adjusting what is “normal”. I hope this coming week brings more answers and continued help and support. Please give Mark my best and know that you are always at the top of my prayer list for healing and comfort!

Life is good here. Lots of babysitting and family fun. All the kids and grands (and grand dogs) we’re home this weekend for Chris’ 69th birthday. It was lots of fun and such a nice honor for Chris.
Last night I had a celebration dinner for one of my sponsees. She celebrated 15 years of sobriety. We went to another fellow AA’s house because this gal is in a wheel chair and house bound after a series of surgeries. It was lovely. Then we went to an AA meeting so she could get her chip. Nice weekend.
Today I’m just recuperating and putting the house back together.
Our weather has cooled down a bit. Mostly in the low 80’s. Very pleasant.
I’m sending you so much love and support.
Huge hug!

Mark came home today and we set up his PT and ST as well as doctor's appointments. He sees his GP and Parkinson's APRN Tuesday for follow ups and hopefully we will finalize drugs, so we can complete Medicare enrollment. He's scheduled for 2 upper GI tests for swallowing and choking issues as well as continuing speech therapy started in rehab.
He's back to 'normal' and we can only hope everything will be better from here.

Hope all is good in CA - hope you are not suffering black-outs or fire smoke.

Oh no, Kali,
I'm sooooo sorry to hear that Mark is hospitalized. I wish I was there to support you in the hospital and keep you company. I will pray that he gets some answers to the most immediate concerns and that the med changes make a difference. Such a difficult balancing act with meds, I'm sure.

I'm here for you, even though it is long distance.
Sending lots of love to you both.

Leslie - how cool to visit ‘long distance’. Glad to hear about your clear skies.
Was concerned the 🔥 were close.

We’re in the hospital - Mark’s in for observation on the advice of his PD APRN. Yesterday was an ordeal. Started in the emergency department and poor Mark suffered horrible leg spasms. He’s seen the neurologist today and they’re changing some of his meds plus taking an MRI of his back. Looks like @ least another day, but we shall see...

Hope all is good with you!

Kali,
You have such a balancing act as Mark’s support system! The worry and concern is tempered with discretion of tongue. I personally find that so challenging! Be sure to take care of yourself. I will keep good wishes going your way that PT is successful and helpful!

Our weather is still hot and dry here. It’s been in the 90’s. But the silver lining is that it is crystal clear.

Sunday I had a very cool FaceTime call from my “Portuguese Mom”. I went to Portugal on an exchange program between my jr. and sr. year in HS. Another student who was in my same city who I’ve kept in touch with, went for a visit to Portugal to celebrate 50 years since we were there. She spent time with my host family and they FaceTimed me for about an hour. It was so much fun and touched my heart. That was a very special time in my life!
Have a blessed week. Sending a hug.

Leslie - I'm so sorry to hear about the fires and am sending good vibes to keep you safe. Five miles with Santa Ana winds is minutes. Thank goodness for excellent firefighters.
Bummer about the vertigo. I've been experiencing some semi-vertigo symptoms, but on the whole am delighted with the state of my health.

Mark's been having a tough time of it - lightheaded and dizzy and we're not sure if it's the lack of exercise or the naproxen or both... I'm trying to be supportive without being intrusive. Another part of the 'new' normal - PT starts Wednesday - keep your fingers crossed for improvement!

Hi Kali,
Finding the "new normal" always seems to be the deal as we head into our mature years, but you have extra challenges with Mark's PD. I'm so happy to hear that progress continues to be made in the research and treatment areas. I hope just the right support group that helps you both appears in the near future. That can be tricky. They have to be supportive and informative and not whiny and negative. That is quite a catch 22 when pain prevents movement and exercise that could help, but is not easily accomplished. Sending you both love on this front.
A girl date next Wednesday will be a great elixir for you. And Phantom is such a great one.

We are having our usual fall Santa Ana winds and fire danger here in CA. Last week we had a devastating fire about 5 miles away in Calimesa (neighboring town). My sister lives about 1 mile from where it began. It destroyed a huge mobile home park near one of our Middle Schools. One elderly lady died. So sad. 76 mobile homes were destroyed so the human loss could have been so much worse. The firefighters did a miraculous job, both ground and air, of getting control. It headed down the dry canyons toward our area but was halted in about 2 days. Looks like the coming week will be another warm windy one, with many "red flag" alerts. The plan is to possibly shut down electricity if necessary, like they did in northern California last week. It's kind of crazy, but we all just have to stay vigilant and smart.

I've had another bout with vertigo this past week. It goes on and off. Today is not so good again, but I'm just doing those exercises, drinking lots of water, and being kind to myself.

Otherwise, life is really good and I'm staying present in the day and grateful.
Sending you much love and encouragement to be kind to yourself. I'm glad you are enjoying your yoga experiences. It is a simple and helpful pleasure, for sure.

Leslie - glad your weather is better and you have such wonderful friends - an area of life I need to work on (most of my 'friends' are wives of Mark's friends). I'm sure that Jan felt the love she needed from you.

Still figuring out our retirement life, especially with Mark's Parkinson's...
We attended a conference that was highly encouraging. Our medical center's researcher thinks there will be a disease retardant in 3 years and a potential reversal in 10 years. I think seeing others 'in the same boat' may open the doors to joining a support group...
We also had two Dr. appointments - one with his new GP and one with an ortho (both sons of friends of ours). They were reducing his blood pressure meds for dizziness, but after taking (one day) of naproxen - the pressure was elevated, so I called and we'll go back to full tab with 10 readings. The naproxen is for pain in his glutei/hip for which he'll start PT Wednesday.
The lack of exercise from the pain is a double whammy, so I have a 'date' with a GF to see the Phantom of the Opera next Wednesday night.
Hopefully he'll get back to Rock Steady and stretching and we'll find a 'new normal'.
Loving my yoga experiences and have to laugh it took so long to 'find' them...
Hope all is GOOD in CA and sending much emoticon your way!

I hope your busy week is going smoothly and well. How did the carpet cleaning go? That can be disruptive. We don't have much carpet any more, only in the boys 3 bedrooms that aren't used much any more. So our carpet cleaning days are somewhat over.

I'm having a busy but very good week. Weather is cooler so I've been able to get out and walk a lot so far. Lots of yoga. Getting together with my treasures friend Jan tomorrow. I'm taking lunch to her house where we can cozy up and talk our jaws off. She is in need of some loving care right now.

Have a super rest of your week. Sending you much love!

Leslie - glad you’re talking with Chris on your way home and are there for Liam. Sunday sounds like a great day.
Another busy week. Decided to have carpets cleaned before Thanksgiving visit by my sis so will schedule + enroll for the next OLLI session. Will let you know what classes I get.

Hi Kali.
Thanks for all the phone info. We are leaning towards the 11. Good to have positive reviews!
We’re in the 90’s again today. So no fireplace for us. But I can feel fall in the air. The breezes are different. In So. Cal we look for any tiny sign. Not a leaf has turned but the huge flocks of crows are enjoying our walnuts. They are so crafty and smart.

Love your evening fireplace/movie/apple crisp description!

Tomorrow I head to SD. Liam is 18 months today and able to start his new day care directly across the street from their new apartment. So convenient. But they are nervous about his adjustment. So I’ll help take him, be on call, and pick him up at 11:30. Fun day. I’ll come back tomorrow night because I have things on the schedule Tuesday. Chris hates when I drive at night so i just call him a lot during the drive.

Well I’m going to do some light cleaning and then meet with my sponsee and go to an AA meeting. (My usual Sunday night lately.)

Big Hug!

Bummer about the emoticon but I hope you're continuing to enjoy emoticon and we too are mid-season with no heat or air.

We settled (actually love them) on the 11. You can get a price break by trading your 7s in - we had 6s, so are donating them to Friendship Home (our domestic violence shelter). We're leasing them over 18 months and then can trade them in or purchase. (No interest and Mark's an advocate of using today's money for tomorrow's products.) Face recognition allows for an alternate, so we both have access to each others' phones.
The house was cool last night, so we had the first emoticon of the season. Fun watching Dances with Wolves and enjoying Instant Pot apple crisp.
