Something I find interesting about Brigid, she's the only Celtic goddess eventually adopted by the Catholic Church as a saint. Her worship was so wide spread that they couldn't stamp it out. Eventually they just had a "If you can't beat em' adopt em'" attitude.

I once had a match that was used to pass a light to a candle from Bride's fire, that I then used to pass flame to new candles.

Also used to belong to an online group wherein each of the women would sign-up, as their schedules allowed, to hold the flame for Bridget (I like to switch up her names) for 24 hours on a schedule, with 1 day of the ?fortnight?, iirc, being specifically out.

The Celtic goddess Brigid also has a perpetual fire associated with her. I have a candle that was lit from Brigid's Fire in Ireland. The lore is that a candle once lit from Brigid's Fire will always hold that sacred fire when lit. Thanks for reminding me about my candle!!! I think I will get it out for a little MidSummer Night Fire Ritual!

It's one of my favorites!

I love the idea that Hestia is the fire. It's entirely possible that when she is warm and welcoming she's the hearth, a place to draw comfort and fellowship, but in times of strife, she is the fire, a defense against invasions.

I've wondered if Hestia is the Great Goddess of the Paleolithic, surviving into the Hellenic times. She is the hearth, but I think of her more as fire. Fire mastery must have been one of the KEY early human achievements. Thanks for this (& love Goddess Gift website! deep but accessible)

emoticon for the information and the references. I look forward to checking out the quizes! I can't remember much about Hestia from those long ago mythology lessons; in fact I confused her with Hera at first. I loved your suggestions! emoticon

Hestia, the first and the last. She was the firstborn of Cronos and Rhea, and if you know that story she was the last of their children to be disgorged by Cronos.

Hestia is known for her traits. She is calm, gentle, dependable, welcoming, and most importantly centered. She was widely worshiped, both publicly and privately, but little of her is mentioned in the surviving greek myths. It's thought that a portion of the burnt offerings to all of the gods went to Hestia.

She is the goddess that holds down the fort while the other gods and goddesses attend to their duties and whims. As long as her sacred fires burn, all is safe of Olympus. She invented the family meeting and in some ways modern democracy. Town halls were built around Hestia's hearth. The Olympic flame is lit from Hestia's hearth.

Hestia was one of 3 virgin goddesses. Virgin meaning "complete within oneself" instead of what it means today. She was never married. Neither was Artemis or Athena.

Her sacred animal was the domestic pig and possibly the donkey. She favored flowering plants, and of course, sitting around the fire with loved ones.

To honor this goddess enjoy some time tending your home and garden. (your potted plants count!) Enjoy a meal, bought or made, with someone you love. Have a fire in your fire pit if you have one. Drag out your BBQ grill and make dinner for you and your family to enjoy. If you don't have either, grab take-out and light a candle. Create time to have a temporary reprieve from the chaos around us. Hestia's hearth was always a place to find your center and enjoy the company of the people you love.

emoticon I understand we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Social distancing is still a must. I'm talking about people in your bubble. The ones you are already spending some time with. emoticon
