Another idea would be to suggest that snacks are placed on one table rather than distributed to each small table. That way folks would have to get their snacks during breaks and you could take a walk instead of eating.

Make it a great day!

Robin - When I was eating strict paleo, which I'm transitioning back to, I would tell people that I'm eliminating foods for digestive/health reasons. People tend to back off if you tell them it's for health reasons vs. weight loss/diet. I don't know why, but if people think you are on a diet they think every little cheat/treat is okay. If people think it's for health reasons, they back off and later comment on how well you are doing with eating healthy and ask how it is going.

Robinrs- Yes, I know what you mean. Whenever people want to do something nice for teachers it seems to be food oriented. Lunches, chips, candy, etc. I plan to restart my weight loss program when school starts and I will need all of the tips I can get to help me through. Like the tip about having healthy snacks available. Will definitely do that.

ROBIN - why not bring your own healthy snacks. You can be eating what you know is good for you and the other stuff won't be quite so tempting. Just an idea.

I'm anxious about the school year starting - and not about what most people might think.
We have lots of meetings and conferences the first month of school with "treats" provided. This morning there was a variety of chocolate bars and other candies on the tables at 8:30. Two hours later they brought out chips and other snacks. I did okay the first part but gave in and then ate too many things. This abundance of junk food is fairly typical. I could handle it better if everything was at a single food table or even a bowl passed around but I really struggle when I have to sit with it right there for hours while everyone else snacks and offers me some. Argh! Has anyone else had the same issues? Any suggestions? I did manage to stay within my calories limit for the day(if I remembered everything I snacked on) but didn't do well with the nutrients.

I tend to read anything that my mother purchases. I just borrow them. I read a lot of James Patterson. Most recently Murder House. It really kept me guessing but was kind of gory. I also like Sandra Brown and Jonathan Kellerman.

I am loving being off for the summer break. I have built a small paved area for a fire pit , worked on repairing a water damaged bathroom vanity , cleaned most of the house, and will begin painting the kids' bathroom soon.

Mine was pretty sad. My uncle died and we drove 12 hours to get to the funeral. Flew home the next day in bad weather. Layovers and delays. Not quite what I was looking forward to but loss of a loved one is never what you expect.

I'd need a gallon sized jar! I like it, though. Maybe I'll start it up next week. I'm not trusting them with my good suntea jar at work. The thought of shattered bits of glass in the carpet makes me shudder. A good plastic one from a dollar store will do the trick. Thanks for the idea!

I love the idea of the tattling jar.
Kids need to take the time to write, and they feel that they are heard without using up lots of your time and energy.

One year when I had a group of compulsive tattlers I put a jar on the counter with quarter sheets of recycled paper next to it. They could not tell me, but had to write it down. I promised to read every one of them. I did, and rarely needed to take action and the tattling slowed down. I kept the jar for a couple more years but never needed to use it again.

Entering the "mean season" before state testing in May. This is when the students get on each other's nerves. This particular class has a larger than normal pocket of negativity that continually gravitates together in the cafeteria or hallway. They make the better behaved students suffer through their actions. It's a pain to feel like a fist all day long and not uncurl and laugh a bit more with the ones who actually get my humor.

We have been in extremely cold temps for the past week or so. I thought I was doing awesome keeping our water dripping and pipes intact. Yesterday the temp went up to 40 and a pipe burst. No water here. Waiting for plumber to come today. Ugh!

Love your logo. I do think believing in yourself is half the battle. I love the nutrition tracker here. It is very helpful. November for me is really flying by. I cannot believe that Thanksgiving is next week already.
Before i know it, my children will be home from college for the Holidays. I really hope they don't derail my progress. One graduates in May so this could be our last Christmas together for a while.

I am losing weight 10% at a time. I can do this!

I have been teaching for too long I guess. My first teaching position was for 12,800 a year. I could have qualified for food stamps that year if I had known they existed. So teachers that are starting out at 40,000, I don't quite understand how they can complain...

I am hoping to retire in 2023...I have been teaching for 30+ years and am waiting until I am 62 and done paying my children's college loans off before I retire...

Have decided I'd like to lose 5 pounds a season..or 20 pounds this school year. I want to start losing instead of gaining weight.

I am losing weight 10% at a time. I can do this!

I saw an interesting Reddit thread the other day comparing salaries of teachers and librarians. It reminded me of my undergraduate days, when I was part of a group called "I picked a major I love and I'm going to live in a cardboard box". My first "real" librarian job was in a prison, and I remember talking to one of the inmates about how my previous job had been as a manager in a bank. He was astonished, and wanted to know why the heck I would give that up to come work there of all places. All I could say was because it was what I wanted to do. I could certainly have made more if I'd stayed in finance, and it was a wonderful place to work...but it's not the same.

Hi! Bella is home and everything appears to have gone well. We will just take one day at a time and hope for a non eventful recovery period.

We have been working in our classroom for the last couple of days. Our first official day for teachers is this Friday. A brand new year is about to begin! emoticon

BEACHCOMBER - too bad you don't have that bathroom you need. Is one far away?
Definitely will say a prayer for Bella and the doctor that all goes very well. You will do fine, with the PT, they usually give a demo and written instructions.

We worked in our classroom a little today. We have been moved to a new school with a smaller room and no bathroom. I requested a bathroom because a good chunk of my first month is spent trying to potty train my 4 year olds with special needs. I like to put them on the potty hourly.

Bella will get her surgery tomorrow. Please pray for her surgery to go well. She will need to be crated for approximately 6 weeks and we will need to do physical therapy on her. I am nervous I will do it wrong. emoticon

I need that 2nd grader at my house. Maybe his Mom can rent him out! LOL

My poor Bella (dog) needs surgery. After the surgery, she will have to stay on complete rest meaning in her crate except for going out on a leash to potty for 4-6 weeks. I can not image!
She is a wild as a buck, 3 year old rottweiler. She is going to be miserable. emoticon

For sure and just so no elementary teachers get scared, I meant to write that we only sent him into cabinets where nothing was harmful. (not harmless!)

Today, we cleaned out and reorganized another section of the science lab. I think we have about 25% more to go. Whew! I'm grateful that the other science teacher had a 2nd grader. We sent him into a couple of the cabinets to retrieve things we couldn't reach. Of course, we only used him for cabinets where none of the items were harmless - the big space where clean lab coats are stored, for example. Some of them had fallen out of the boxes, but we couldn't reach them from either side. He was an eager helper and kept saying "I love cleaning!" all day long. :-) I told his mom that I might need to borrow him one of these days. ;-)

KRYS - elementary teachers have the most variety! Last spring, my AP Chemistry class put on an end-of-year show for the 3rd -5th graders at our school. It was a blast! The 3rd graders made me smile when I overheard them ask "Are they professionals? They look and act professional." Some of my AP Environmental Science kids did a STEM challenge - the one where you build towers out of spaghetti, tape, string, and marshmallows - with the 1st graders after their exam. The juniors came back and told me "they don't listen any better than we do."

My "secret weapon" was hiring a teacher's kid for a few hours. She's now in college and fully trained and trustworthy. There are many former teacher's kids that you couldn't persuade me to let near my home.

I teach both math and science. This year's science classes include anatomy and environmental science/AP environmental science. This year's maths include Honors Algebra II, College Preparatory Algebra II and AP Calculus AB. I will also have two AP Labs (one for Calc and one for Env Sci) and a study hall.

Today, I am walking the dog, sorting some more curriculum that's still lurking in the garage and then heading to school to meet the new science teacher, so we can inventory the lab together. Yes, back to school prep is ramping up considerably. In-service starts Wednesday. Let's see if I can have my room (mostly) together by the end of the day tomorrow.

KRYS - I read a full chapter before sleeping very soundly for the night. I did manage to migrate from the recliner to the bed first, too. emoticon

Today, "secret weapon" came over and we we sorted through lots of the curriculum in the garage and took 1 car-load to school. I will put it away on Monday. Gradually making progress....

KRYS... you are wise. I normally prep a little each week over the summer and maybe, take 2 weeks fully off. I had a medical procedure this summer, though, so I took time for recovery and then everything else was behind when I could do things again

I did take a 1-week prof. development course related to two of the classes I will teach this year and tested about 20 labs.

Tonight your wisdom rubbed off, and I started reading one of my textbooks. :-)

Thanks Krys and SWIMANDWALK,

I will keep you posted about Bella. I am glad to hear that your dog is starting to perk up. I now know where I am going to be working this year. The new principal sent me a welcome e-mail. I am a little anxious because the culture is always a little different everywhere you go. I hope it is a happy feeling school like my last one!

No school prep has occurred yet today unless you count trying to sort through and put away all the items that have accumulated on the kitchen table, so I can eat and work there next week. Or the learning styles podcasts I listened to while doing that?!?

I am not getting my homework done. :-( :-( :-(

Fortunately, I've hired a friends college aged daughter to help me sort and load items going back to school into the car tomorrow morning, so I know I'll be productive then. :-)

Does anyone else spend the last couple of days debating whether taking care of things on the home front or doing school prep will actually make for a less stressful school year?

My dog is a little better today to the point where I plan to work on some school prep. over the next few hours. She is a good little patient. She is taking her medicine, drinking liquids, and napping without complaint. Last night, she apparently decided it was time for rehab. When I took her outside for a bathroom break, she walked the perimeter of the yard and did stretches to see what she could do. She tired quickly and came in. This morning, she did stretches for a little longer. She is eating lightly every few hours, so I am hopeful that she will soon be harassing me for walks.

KRYS210 and BEACHCOMBER --The dog is getting some better. They think she has a secondary infection from a virus, so she's on antibiotics and has antibiotic eye cream. Right now, she'd be a good illustration for what "dog-tired' means, but she is interested in doing her favorite things - such as sneaking up on the sofa- again.

BEACHCOMBER - I hope they find a way to get your doggie's knee feels better soon.

I hope your dog is better soon. It is so upsetting when our fur babies are not feeling well. Mine injured her knee a couple of months ago and it is still no better. She has been taking antiinflammatories. I have another appointment for her on Monday. emoticon

I ended up taking the dog to the urgent care part of the vet's office today and so little on the back to school got accomplished. In-service begins in exactly one week, but there is so little time allocated for working in our actual classrooms then that I'll probably go back on the 7th.

I will spend as much time at home as I can tomorrow and Friday, so the dog can stay inside as much as possible and hopefully recover enough to be outside during the school days by next Wednesday.
