Congrats on the new job, Marty! They are lucky to have you, what great spreads you put out!

Looks like your photos are posting now, perhaps just a short term glitch?

Our trip to Glacier is cancelled, we are heading to familiar territory, closer to home now, it should be fun, Eastern Sierra is a hikers/climbers/mountain bikers playground!

Short noticed.. shopping at Walmart with my wife and I get a text message.. afternoon cook has not shown up for work.. I phone the office and the owner picked up, I have only talked to her once ever, and I had to ask if the cook came or not.. there was over 45 minutes time delay in sending the message and me reading it.. no cook .. can I come in..
Well I said líll be there within half an hour..
I get to meet the owner .. nice lady.. she tested, its kinda funny .. but I past .
Several questions on procedures and contacts to call for different repairs and finally a comment about health inspections. I know both the areas Health Inspectors well and they like me.. when I told the owner their names and that comment ... I think I secured her trust... only question or issue is when do I take full reign of the kitchen.. out going manger or myself in charge now.. who do staff call.. I was told I had to resolve this ..

So not really prepared I rush off to work.. what will I serve ?

Roasted potatoes, Lemon roasted asparagus, Steamed carrots drizzled with maple syrup,
Spinach lentil stew and a mixed green salad

Updating.
Condo is not selling, too much competition. Several new builds have now gone on the market and four or five units in my complex are now on the market. I heard there was a group of investors interested in my place but pulled out because not interested in our complex. Our property manager company is not good and their are rumours of more high levies coming in the near future.. Iím in trouble .. this wonít be an easy sell.
Good news
I was hired to take over the kitchen manager position at a Wellness Center..
I just finished my training , and I cooked on my own two meals already, one early shift 6 - 2 and a late shift 1-8 ..
No meat .. none whatís so ever .. only vegetarian and vegan, Gluten free and dairy free..
No wonder I lost 6 pounds since the beginning of the month..

. Home made falafel, coconut rice, braised red cabbage

( have more phots but once again sparks is not allowing me to post )

From a recent solo hike.

Looking for some more challenging trails nearby.

Wake up every day knowing you make the decision to begin your journey anew.

Looks like a nice ride!

We had stormy weather yesterday, I got in a workout inside while the downpour happened, then got out for a short walk between outbursts! At least I don't have to water today!

Covid virus.. what day is it? What time is it! Everything blends together as we stayed home in exile, as the days go on and on same as yesterday and the day before. So after supper Noni and I went for a bike ride.. out after supper again.. blame it on covid..
Actually it was too windy earlier in the day, we deliberately waited till after supper when the wind would die down..
My knee , legs do feel better after the the ride, although I woke up around 6 am with pain. However the good thing, I slept all night through... no middle of the night crawling out of the cozy bed.

My first ride out this season was difficult because of the hard seat too! But it's good to get out and use those bike muscles too! emoticon

Itís been over a year or longer since I have been on my bike. Last year I wanted to, but because of knee pain it did not happen. Well this week both of our bikes were taken into the shop to get serviced. New tires, lube and a new chain for me.. now we are ready to get on and go go..

My knee feels the strain of the ride, but nothing I should be concerned with. Iím over weight, lacking in exercise.. so what else would I expect.. my butt is more sore than my knee or legs .. I need a padded seat..

our supper was a lamb/ beef donair for me and a chicken donair for Noni. We had a house showing during our bike ride, fingers crossed ...

Yesterday after supper we went out for a short drive. With this exile happening we havenít drove outside of Squamish. Condo to grocery store, condo to a trail head in Squamish. Since March 12 I have put gas in the car once of 21 dollars and still weíre full. So last night just for a drive we went to Noni work place, no going in though, turned around and went to Camp Summit. Once again no stopping in, but just a drive pass and to see the results of the forest fire. We did stop to stretch our legs and to take photos at a couple of locations. It was good to go for this drive, listen to the music in the car and see a change of scenery.
On returning home we met our neighbor, he asked if we have been away, hasnít seen us in months now .. no .. just being self exiling at home I told him.

And thanks for sharing your latest hike! It looks like a lovely day!

I got in 5.5 miles yesterday, hope to get on the bike today. We may venture a little farther from home...as my state slowly starts to open things up a bit. At least when we're outside it's easier to stay a safe distance from others!

My mentor, my friend passed away.
Here is a draft of a tribute I will record and send to his family to be included in the memorial

With the news of Jimís passing, the memories, the life lessons and teachings continue to surface as I reflect on the inspiration, the influence, council and the love I received both from Jim and Ruth. In my mind there is no separation of their love for God, each other, their family and their service to Christ and a love for me.

My journey begins with a black lab named Pup, when I was a small lad around the age of eight years old, Jim and Ruth were used of God to help influence the person I have become. They lived on the corner next to a Baptist church at that time, with less children too when I first encountered Jim. I would stop and pet their dog, Pup or was it Puppy at that time.. on the way to school in the mornings and afternoons on my way home. One day Jim was outside and began talking to me, eventually I was spending more and more time within their home becoming a part of the family staying away from mine as much as possible.

I consider Jim and Ruth to this day to be my adopted parents. Even recently I was sharing with my wife about how much influence they both had on my life.

In May of 1972 Jim Kennedy and some other people from the church brought a group of youths to a David Wilkerson Crusade. Jim had worked with me, loved me and taught me things about God, I was ready. At the end of the eveningís message a call was made to come forward.
I was so terrified, but my friend next to me was also wanting to go forward so we did. The transaction was made.
Christ Jesus took my sins and gave me His righteousness and adopted me into the family of God. I became a child of God the Father, brother of Christ and co heir with him.

Jim and some other men continue to mentor and put up with a wild child.
Encouraging me to attend church, Sunday School and attend a program called Christian Service Brigade and a group that he was created call Teen Scene.

I recall a time Jim had me go collect dead fish and seaweed from the shores of Lake Ontario so I could put in and on their garden in the back yard, it was smelly and hard work.

Later in time. Jim helped me set up a garden tilling business. He purchased this monster of a machine, and I repaid him as I dug up gardens in the spring and fall. I also remember that it was Jim who drove me to and from the houses where I was tilling or to Canadian Tire to buy a new drive belt. His generosity and kindness never ceases to amaze me.

Church picnics at Camp IAWAH. Once again Jim and Ruth would pack the van and I would tag along too. This was my only camp experience growing up and from that experience, I have gone on to spend most of my working career at children camps. A thank you for this introduction has to be mentioned.
.

I remember the time I surprised Jim, I got into a fight with a girl who was larger and stronger than I, but somehow I managed to get the upper hand and pin her to the ground. Jim reminded me of this a couple of time over the years ..

Who can forget his death hold or his Mr. Spock grab, what did he call it?
It hurt. It was effective.. this I do remember from experience.

Can you picture now in your mind going to a bible study with Jim. He often carried that Hugh reddish concordance. It always looked so big and intimidating.. ( over the years I often wondered if he ever went technical and use a smart phone or iPad instead of carrying that large book) all I know is that over many years if I needed help in finding a verse or verses for a particular topic, it was Jim who would get a phone call.

I have memories of attending a bible study with three or four men in a very noisy church basements as the water pipes rattled with Jim as the leader..

In high school I remember interviewing Jim for one of my courses, not to overly praise him, but to acknowledge his training, I remember filling up a page or two of his accreditations and degrees .. he was a genius and still he made time for God, family and service..

Another project at another time I did something on wolves. I still remember my opening lines somewhat and it comes from Jim. Something along the lines ... I know of no one who has ever been eaten by a wolf and has came back to tell the tale.. a quirky sense of humour donít you think.

Teen Scene .. oh they were rough years. How did we survive? How did Jim put up with me. There was the time I was the reason someone fell from a second floor barn platform and yet only had minor injuries. The time I hid away and made the group return home very late, and the forever battle of who was going to sit in the front seat, and the many other trying actions that I did.
Jim through it all in my recollection did not ever scolded me or loose patience. This is a prime example of Jim showing the patience and love of Christ with difficult people.

My teen years were a struggle and I found my self living in my car for a time. Guess who opened their home and made a room in an already full house. Once again the love and faith Jim and Ruth have for God was put into practical actions. . who does that sort of thing, except through Christís indwelling Spirit.

From the age eight to about twenty my life revolved around Jim and Ruth. At this point life began to separate us and I became so much more independent and drifted away. I do not have many regrets in life, but the one I do have is of not staying in closer contact with Jim and Ruth. But one thing I do hold deep in my heart .. I believe Jim knew I loved him and am grateful for all that he did. Now he is with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and our Father and Iím sure he heard the words of Christ ..
Matthew 25:23
His master said to him, ĎWell done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master

Today is supposed to be hot. I hope Noni and I can get out for a walk, nothing really is stopping us except laziness.
I feel sad. I received news yesterday my adopted father is dying, and I was asked to prepare a memorial audio .. I was chosen with a few others to do this by him his son says. What a honour and privilege but also sadness. I have been up early writing my first draft..
One problem but maybe not.. any advice.. he and his wife were so influential inspirational in my life, how do I separate his and hers .. I loved these people more than anyone else in my life. Sadly too I was closer to this couple than my real parents..
He passed last night with his wife at his side.,
Now this covid virus really has affected my life, I cannot go to Kingston to bury my mother and now I cannot go to a funeral or hug the people who mean the most to me ..

Side notes .. I take pictures of other peopleís dogs.. we do not plan on replacing our Dalhouise
We think it is best for now now to have another pet, but one never knows.

Pretty day you had there, Marty!

I got in a five mile hike today, not too bad on the trails, I've been sticking to the wider trails/roads so it's easier to keep my distance!

May first 2020.. Noni and I went to the bank.. Waited patiently in line to go to a teller. Our teller was a little grumpy.. I told her I wanted to pay off our mortgage.. she said it would take a couple of days,,, then she went and talked to her manager.. a few moments later both came to us.. Manager congregated us and did the necessary computer stuff.. later that day the money was taken from our account. Mortgage is paid out..Iím totally debt free .. even during a pandemic.

We afterwards went for a quick walk

What a nice surprise!

Hope you can make good use of those knives.

And thanks for taking us along on your hike the other day, the views are beautiful!

I got on a short (2 mile) hike today, I had done a CrossFit workout before, so decided to cut it short. I will try to go longer tomorrow!

I've put a lasagne in the oven...I'm trying something different using brushetta as the sauce, so I hope it turns out OK.

Yesterday I had an unexpected parcel delivered to my door. I was expecting a bottle opener from Switzerland from a company called Mora. Mora if you remember sent me kitchen knives back in October (Free)

Well yesterday after I thanked this lady for her gift, she said it wasnít from her.. After a little research we figured out it was from her uncle.. Mora is a family run business.

I went for a walk, intended only for an hour. Well when you go out the door and place one foot in front of another, over and over and over... enjoying yourself.... time flies by. Four hours later I called my wife to come pick me up.. Iím so tired and my legs are not moving as they did..
But it was a awesome outing..

What a great feeling to have a paid off mortgage! Good for you, Marty!

We got in a bike ride yesterday, can be a bit tricky to socially distance on bikes, it takes some looking ahead and finding a good place to move off the trail, especially on the single track (maybe why I prefer the larger roads...)

This morning.. appointment with the accountant, momís income tax completed. Paid and received a form to go to the bank to pay what she owed. Decided to go for a quick walk before going to the bank in case it wasnít open yet. Stopped to collect more boxes at the grocery store, swing over to the bank.. Bank is still closed. Go home and eat brunch, go back to the Bank. Paid Mom taxes, divided her remaining balance between my brother and I.. we are now finished.. her affairs are finished.. I took my bank draft to my bank and deposit into an account I have set aside for paying my mortgage. I expect next week another lump sum .. if all goes as planned .. I will pay off my mortgage.. A 30 year mortgage paid in ten years.. God is so good ..

We have turkey vultures here in Reno, I figured they get around!

We had a bobcat stroll through the yard the other day, nature making herself seen!

Should be going on a bike ride soon.

Have a great day!

Ha ha! "grapple" is a sort of mix between hail and rain and snow, sort of tiny snowballs falling from the sky!

I think there is a Spark article that has the meanings of CrossFit terms, but if you need a translation, LMK I can probably help! Although I did skip one recent WOD because I just couldn't figure out how I was supposed to do the workout!

I have looked up grappled twice. Do you mean ďengage in a close fight or struggle without weapons; wrestle or ďstruggle with or work hard to deal withĒ or overcome (a difficulty or challenge)Ē

I have not done our online CrossFit for this reason too. I need a translator or it takes hours lol.

Love the pictures Marty.

Yesterday walk was once more a perfect day to be out. We havenít had rain in such a long time. This isnít good I keep telling Noni.. itís too dry .. forest fires will be bad this year.
well unfortunately I am correct. Later in the afternoon... a controlled burn became uncontrollable. Raging wild now in the area just behind Camp Summit where I worked for ten years is a forest fire. Camp is surrounded on three sides by this fire last night, havenít heard anything yet today.. The fire is spreading fast and many people are being evacuated. Noni who is off because of this virus lockdown, her employer emailed her to let her know that they are also on evacuation notice.. this is over many miles separation .. the fire has spread so far and fast.
Other news ... we are considering moving.. will have a REALTOR looking for us now and Iím waiting for a local REALTOR to come and tell us what we must do to list..
Campbell River is our desired location. Still lots of wildlife, lots of birds, many hiking trails..
How could we ever find a awesome place as Squamish.. well I think Campbell River will match.
It all depends on the price we can get for our condo .. and when it sells..

Today I went for a short walk.. too much smoke is in the air...
photos are from yesterday walk .. enjoy
map of the fire zone and evacuation

What a find CCrosset! Glad you were able to get out near your home!

Marty, nice pics as usual! I've been watching a blue bird in my yard the past couple of days, maybe it decided to nest nearby? We have lots of quail that live here, I really enjoy seeing the chicks when they appear.

I had 2 5+ mile hikes this weekend, really glorious weather!

Happy Easter.
Today Noni and I watched our pastor live stream the Easter Service on Facebook, then we went for a short walk at the Squamish Terminals Estuary. There were many people out and about but more or less keeping social distance. Can you blame them as the temperature was 18c and sunny. The rains will come eventually, then everyone will stay inside except for those who have dogs to walk or are the die hard nature lovers. I met two friends who like me were out with camera in hand looking for Bluebirds.. none were around today unfortunately.
Noni and I went here because, I was looking for the bluebird and also the plan was to stop and buy milk and eggs at the grocery store on the way back. I donít know about you.. went in only to buy two things and walk out carrying four bags and the milk .. 45 dollars spent ...
we eat way too much..
Now for some photos .. enjoy

Easter weekend..the first 18 years of my life I would pack my bags and go to the summer cottage of my Grandfather. Oh the memories I have.. my first dance, my first kiss, the first time my girlfriend spent the weekend with me, my first cigarette...having my grandfather teach me to put a worm onto a hook and fishing with my father. Memories also flash into my mind of the many people who have passed but are part of the cottage environment. Today walking with my wife on a Good Friday, the warmth of the sun and the smell of the woods awakened these old memories I have tucked away. I have no regrets of remembering my past, even though I have a mixture of joy and sadness tied up in the opening of my grandfathers cottage over the Easter weekends over the years.

White Pacific Bleeding Hearts

Often this would be the time I go for my first swim of the year.. I would sneak away and go for a very quick skinny dip.. often there was still ice on the lake.. with only a little ice free area near the shore.. I was young and foolish if not stupid..

Beautiful pics Marty! Glad to hear you got out on a lovely day, in the midst of the quarantine.

I missed a couple of days walking, but did get in 2 miles today, it was beautiful out! I skipped my CrossFit workout, I just didn't understand the scheme, and didn't want to try to figure it out, plus it's really the first warm, sunny day we've had in a while!

Slowly this exile is beginning to wear me down.. the days are longer and more sunny and the tv has the same things on over and over. Noni and I are glued to watching the news on three or four channels and this is depressing.. then frustrating as I see so many people coming up to Squamish to hidden camp sites and trails that are not regulated. ( I see on Facebook postings from my friends who live in or near these areas.) STAY HOME and / or Stay in Your own Neighbourhood.
Noni and I have been in exile ( self isolation) .. however yesterday we went for a walk. We drove our car literally 5 minutes from our condo to the estuary. Noni has never been on this trail before, I found it only a-couple of weeks ago.
It was pleasant to see all the signs of spring.. Yellow wood violets, Salmon Berries, Horsetails, Skunk Cabbage, Bleeding Hearts and a flowering Red Currant Bush.
I heard some Canada Goose, but never did see any, however I did see some Mallard Ducks, Common Mergansers, Bufflehead Ducks. Some crows made an appearance and Raven sat in a tree looking over its realm. Dark-eyed Juncos were plentiful however they were too quick for me to get any photos. The Robins were very much camera shy, but their song filled the air waves.
When we drove to the trailhead my car thermometer read 8c and when we returned home 12c. While hiking in the covered part of the trail it felt cool but when we entered open sections we definitely felt the heat since we were dressed for the more cooler temperatures

Now for some photos....

Skunk Cabbage

It was hard not to pet this pooch, but self distancing was practiced

very atmospheric photos, Marty, glad you were able to get out!

I've been hitting my local trail (behind the house). I step off the trail when I see other hikers and bikers to keep the safe distance. The weather has been mostly cloudy, today I got grappled on at the start and end of my hike!

Beautiful pictures Marty!

We went to Death Valley for a couple nights, love hiking in this area. Took a nice hike up a canyon from camp to the base of a small waterfall. There is one higher up that we've been to before but there was a lot of water this time so this was a far as we made it. Surprisingly, there was still quite a bit of snow in the mountains there too!

Tuesday I went to my employer, had a face to face talk and then handed in my resignation. I was hugged . The residents felt sad, some staff did too. I also had to go to the bank and pay back to the government some money they overpaid my mother for January.. since she passed in December.
Afterwards Noni and I went on an afternoon date.

It was nice to visit winter, but I think prefer spring here below

(To bad I couldnít get a clear photo) but spring here below has come

What a challenge, Marty! Sounds like you're up to it though, I hope the meals don't have to be all those things at once, you'd have to serve up a lot of salads...

I got out on the trails tonight, nice 1.75 mile stroll before the sun went down! emoticon

Up dating.. I was offered the job to work at camp as the special meals chef. I will feed all the guest and staff who are vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, celiac, dairy free, egg free, you name it.. it is my responsibility. Oh how did that happen??
Noni will be second cook baker . Responsible for salad bar and bake goods.
Tuesday I must give notice that I am leaving my present job.. I will miss the residents and most of the staff ... not my supervisor or co- cook. They made life miserable in the kitchen.
Start up will be 21 March.. I need to take a first aid course and get a police report done.
I have been on line looking for menu ideas and recipes and looking in different cook books .
This will be a new challenge for me.. not the actual cooking but the menu planning for each group of people..
I went and had a tour of the kitchen.. keep in mind it is closed for the winter and so itís a mess and out of commission.. but it will give you an idea where Iím going .

my special small kitchen separate from the larger one

I get to serve all my meals here everyone else go to a buffet table and help them selves.
But I have special plates that I serve their complete meal in.. I get to interact with everyone who I cook for. Iím happy with that..

If you have menu ideas or recipes.. please let me know ..
thank you
