I am so excited, I just started over after hurting my shoulder. No so excited about starting from day one but excited to get moving again.

Hi all-
Today I completed W7D1! For those of you just starting out, it feels like yesterday when I saw that I would have to run 3 minutes all at once! Never in a million years would I believe how quickly the program took me up to 25 minutes, and more unbelievable, how doable it is (I'm not going to say easy, because it's not! But very doable and in some ways feels easier than interval running once you relax into it.) I use a Couch to 5K App on my iphone and today, when it said "you have 5 minutes left" I said to myself "whew-only 5 more minutes!" How funny that what I considered a hard run a few weeks back has now become easy in my head. Good luck to everyone.

Yesterday I did W9D1. 30 minutes nonstop running! I set the pace to 4 mph. I will try 4.5-5 mph maybe on the next workout!

Yesterday I did W1D2 and it felt pretty good. I had issues with my husband's Garmin GPS watch though. I need to play around with it more when I'm not running and learn to use it!

today was also my first cold weather run. I did w1D1. It wasn't so bad. It was 30 degrees and I bundled up good so I was ok. The sidewalks were iced over though and I actually fell during my warmup walk. So, we ran in the road to keep off the ice. It actually went ok. I am so excited. I haven't run since I was in the navy 15 years ago and loved it. I have already found my first 5k also on April 10. So excited.

Tracil, to help your back and arm soreness, you might want to do some extra strength training of your lower back, bicep and tricep. Hope this helps! You will feel that pain until your muscles build however. Hope this helps, I know the back pain can make you want to stop, but it is normal so try and push through it. You can do do it!

W1D2: after the first run my back and arms were sore- i took it as a good sign that I was using muscles I was not used to doing..the bad thing is I was cheating on my 60 seconds.. 55 seconds seemed like a more reasonable time to me (But i walked an extra 15 at the end)... I guess that is why we do this three times the first week- to build up to the next level.. ugh.. this sucks LOL

Some weeks it was hard to make myself go down to the gym (I don't run by myself when it's dark) and run on the treadmill. Last week I took that week off from running and did other exercises instead. This week I'm back on to my training schedule for the 5K in Feb.

It's amazing how BIG the chunks of training time look, going into them, and how easy it is to PSYCHE yourself out. Doesn't it feel great when you realize that yes, emoticon ?

I love the accomplishment in running.

Wow...when I looked at week 4 I was scared....running at 5 minute intervals...TWICE? No way. But guess what..I did it! And it was fun! The last minute of the second 5 minute run was a little rough, but completely doable!

I plan do to day 2 on Friday and Day 3 on Sunday! Looking ahead to week 5 scares me even more (especially that last day...20 minutes uninterrupted?) Seriously?

W4D2 today - Day 1 was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be and I ran it all. The first 5 minute run was a killer but the second one was great! Looking forward to today!

Just finished up W2D2, and I can really see a difference this time. This is probably the third time I've started C25K, making it through week two before my schedule got in the way. I have continued with other forms of cardio, so this time, when I started back, I could really see a differnce in how I've felt this time around. When I first started, my muscles AND my lungs were screaming at me. Now, my muscles are doing just fine, which is quite an accomplishment because I was afraid an old calf injury would prevent me from doing this. My lungs are not nearly as challenging and I have to attribute that to my husband coaching me on what to do when I feel like my lungs are going to explode! It feels good to see the progress. I was a little nervous about today, but found that the end of my 3 minutes almost caught me by surprise, as I was thinking about other things, other than "When is he going to tell me I can stop running?".

I have done the C25K training and ran the 5K once already(I have a blog about it). I am currently on week 8 of my 2nd 5K training. My 5K is all virtual. I use a treadmill and love using it. I have a hard time running 28 minutes with no walking intervals. I want to beat my first 5K racing time.

To all new to couch to 5K: it's a great program! I never could run long distances before.

I thought the same thing yesterday while I was running my 3 minute segments (on W3D1)...I kept thinking "WOW...I am actually running!!!!". And you know what, it felt great. It actually kind of felt addicting, which excites me! I can only hope to get to the day when I am excited to run!!! I am getting there, but not quite yet! I love to do my C25K, but we will see if I am as excited when I am running for a few miles straight! Right now, I think I would die if I had to even run one mile straight! Maybe we should treat ourselves to something when we do our first mile!!! How does a Pedicure sound??!?! emoticon

Just started Week 2 of C25K. I am loving it. Unfortunately, (not really) I will have to extend the week 2 for another week because I will be in Jamaica and I'm not sure how much running I can commit to. :)

I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see.

Hey all, I'll check in here.

I graduated from C25k back in November, ran my first 5k Turkey Trot (35:39), and promptly developed a wicked case of runner's knee in both knees. After a 6 week rest, I started running again last week.

Thursday: Walk 1/2 mile, run 1 mile, walk 1/2 mile.
Saturday: Walk 1/2 mile, run 2 miles, walk 1/2 mile.

Scheduled to run again today, but it doesn't look like my responsibilities are going to cooperate. Will probably end up doing Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday again this week.

For now, I'm planning to run my next 5k on April 25th, though I'd like to find another race before then. It just seems to far away for me!

my race isn't until may 9th--maybe i can find something before then so i don't stall out and get bored.

w4d3 i ran 2.3 miles in 28 min!!! woohoo!!

W3D2 today. I was beyond afraid to start week 3 but it really hasn't been that bad. Of course I definately have to push myself but it feels really good. I have to say, it "feels" better than the other weeks. As far as being invigorating, if that makes sense. I run outside with a few of my friends--we've run in the snow and in 9 degree temperatures. Trust me--if I can do it, anyone can! (I know, EVERONE says that but believe me, it's true!) ;o)
I've registered for a 5K on my 32nd birthday on March 17th. I'm hoping to be ready for it, but won't be devastated if I have to walk a little, I'll just be so happy to have done it!

Wow, week 1 in 3 days! I wanted to give myself some time to rest and recover between workouts, but that is a feat!

As for me, I did w2d1 yesterday and it felt great! I'm doing strength training and kickboxing tonight and will do w2d2 tomorrow morning =)

So far I'm loving the program! I have never been a runner and I'm making sure to watch my knees because I have many runner friends who end up with knee issues. One thing I did notice yesterday was the difference between treadmill and outside running. Running outside makes me search for the perfect pace. I like that. I think I'll do at least 1 day per week outside from now on.

Good luck everyone!

I started running at the start of Dec., but officially started the C25K program this past Saturday.

I ran on Sat., Sun., and again today so I guess I'm technically done Week 1. I'm going to keep doing Week 1 until this upcoming Saturday, though. I don't want to progress too fast and then get burned out.

I've been running outside the whole time and my asthma hasn't really been an issue. Buying that neoprene face mask has made breathing in the cold SOOOOOO much easier. I love it.

My 1st 5K isn't until the end of May and I think the extra training train is definitely going to be useful.

Couch to 5K Program:
*Began Jan. 9, 2010*
*Completed Mar. 13, 2010*

1st 5k - May 30, 2010! (32:37)
1st 10k - Oct. 16, 2010!
Toronto City Chase - June 19, 2010! (5:48:25)

I completed c25k 10/31/09 and I have been slowly working on building speed and distance.
I start the program outside but most of my training was done on a treadmill, because I was scared of running outside in the cold weather.

But I am happy to say that I went outside the past 2 days and ran. I am glad I did wait, because I believe I built up alot of strength and confidence on the TM.

One thing I am excited to see is that I have been running further/faster than I thought. The treadmill I was training on was an older version and recently I used the gym's TM and an app on my iphone that uses GPS. I thought I was running at 15min mile (maybe a little faster) but according to the GPS app my pace avg about 13min mile over the 2 days.

Try and Try Again....

Ok, here I go again. I am on w2d3. My last attempt of running was 4 months ago and I was on week 9. I stopped my routine and never started back again. But now I am looking forward to starting over and finishing this time. I know I can do it.

I am new to SparkPeople. I just joined. I have done C25k in the past- it was awsome. I was finished and amazed that I, someone who never thought running was possible had succeded. but then I got sick...and I missed my race.
I had to have surgery actually on my 30th birthday.
Its been downhill since for the last two years (lots of physical illness).
Now I am recovering from the last surgery I hope and ready to try again.
I KNOW I CAN DO IT.
I am starting from ground zero. I haven't gotten off the couch even in months due to pain.
So I am the true COUCH girl..
I am on docs orders to only walk for 3 more weeks, and stop if I start to hurt... then I can start the program.
I am so excited to join ya'll!

Karen,

that's awful about the dog. Maybe you should call animal control, too. Maybe if enough of the neighbors complain they will make the owners keep him in the yard or send the dog catcher to get him.

Thanks for the tip about protecting yourself against a dog. I never would have thought about kicking a dog under his mouth.

I'm a C25K graduate as of 12/14/09.
Today was my long run in prep for our second 5K this Saturday. I ran for distance instead of time today. I ran 3 and 3/4 miles. It was 51 degrees outside. I experienced quite a few things. I have allergies and asthma. I had some head pain, postnasal drip, a fleeting side stitch, and chest tightness for about 15 or 20 minutes. Whatever. I just kept running. I ran all sorts of intervals but mostly stuck to 2:1 run/walk intervals. I follow Galloway's advice and I do run/walk intervals as needed.
I have no idea what my pace was today. As usual, I overdressed and had to stop and take off some of my clothing. I also had to stop to get some Kleenex tissues. I did have to keep my gloves on for the entire run. I live in a tropical area but the temperature has really dropped here.
After mile three I went inside for a water break. I also rolled up some dough and prepared it for a second rise.
I ended up running for about one hour. After 3 3/4 miles of running a big ugly bad red collared dog came at me twice. He was mean, threatening, and vicious. I didn't know quite what to do upon our first meeting. I knew not to run. I thought about jumping on a car but figured he would just jump right on the car with me. Unfortunately, I saw no sticks or rocks around anywhere. I just backed away from him and circled the car then retreated into the grass and disappeared into the inner courtyard.
I borrowed one of my son's bat and returned outside to complete the last 1/4 of my run. A kind neighbor asked me if I was OK when he saw me armed with a bat. He knew of the dog I had met and told me the dog had come after his 2 y/o son recently. That ticked me off even more.
Before I could complete my last 1/4 mile run, the dog appeared again out of nowhere in a completely different part of the circle. I was ready for this ugly canine this time. With my bat pointing towards his ugly face. I shouted at him, took a step towards him, and told him completely off. :) He challenged me for 5 seconds, retreated, and walked away like a coward.
Still I was nervous walking home. I kept looking over my shoulder. I called 911. A very kind officer came by. We had a nice chat and he gave the children mints. Officer Vinnie advised me to kick the dog under the mouth if he comes at me again. I asked him if I could purchase some kind of spray and he recommended Mace. I bought some tonight at a local Army/Navy store. I will be ready for that feisty dog if he messes with me on my brisk walk tomorrow. I'm going hunting for a humongous stick tomorrow too.
Tonight our son had soccer practice and I ran with his team for about 1/2 mile because I can. :) Now I feel complete because alas I got in my four miles.

I did W1D1 yesterday. Inside, it's freaking cold out there, not to mention icy. It went pretty well. My calves were really tight for the first two sprints but it got much better as I went along. I think I'll stick with the treadmill. Not only is it a lot less icy :), I think it's most likely kinder on my bad knee.

This week has been the coldest thus far in eastern NC. It's gotten down in the 20's at night. Fortunately, I've been on vacation for a couple of weeks, so I didn't have to get out in the 20's to run in the dark! I had the luxury of waiting until it warmed up to a nice 34 degrees and ran in the sunshine! I love the sunshine!

I head back to work on Wed. One more jog tomorrow in the sun and then Thursday, it will be back in the dark again. :( At least the days are beginning to get longer.

Also, I got a heart rate monitor for x-mas. I've only had the chance to use it once for a jog. Boy! If this thing is accurate, I've been burning A LOT more calories than I thought.

Good for you! Listen to your body, last Spring I didn't and managed to tear a ligament in my ankle, which really side-lined me. One thing I learned from my doctor, was to switch my workouts to the elliptical while I was healing, because it's lower impact. That might work for you for the longer "runs," and then when you're able, you could switch back to actual running.

I ran 3 treadmill miles on Sunday at the gym in the middle of a toxic cloud of varnish fumes. They had re-surfaced the basketball court. It was not my best run time, that's for sure. But I finished!

It is amazing how cold can affect your run. Yet, come summer here....I'll be complaining again about running in 110 degrees.

Congrats on completing W1D1! Has your dr. cleared you for exercise? I'm not a doctor but the way this program starts out slow and increases gradually must be a good way to start, as long as overall you are okay to exercise.

Good luck! I am doing W2D1 today!

You can see from my SP that I'm a newbie - and I'm a little afraid to run b/c of my size but I did W1D1 today and I feel ok. I mean, I survived so it must be ok, right? I will not over do it and I will just do what I can and listen well to my body.

I'll let you know how Wed goes.

Wow DRAGONFLY, your running is so inspiring!!! :)

I did W1 last week, all outdoors in North Carolina, 40s-low 50s type weather. It has been much colder the past few days, low 30s so we may run inside today. I have asthma and the cold air really bothers me. I have never run in January before, indoors or outdoors, but looking forward to W2!

I can tell you I did my first cold weather run of the season and I didn't like it! I have run 11 miles so far in January and I have 10 scheduled during the week and 13.1 on Saturday, this week alone I will run just under 30 miles. I think my biggest week in marathon training I run 40 so I'm almost there!

I have 2 races this month, Disney 1/2 and Daytona 5K. I'm not expecting a PR in either as I'm still fighting a hip injury and Disney I'm taking easy so I don't miss training runs and Daytona I can't push the speed and risk injuring myself and tearing my TFL.

For all you out there debating on your first race, go for it! I hated running, then ran my first race, now I'm 4 months out from a full marathon!

PRs
5K - 29:54
4 Miles - 45:00
10K 1:05:44
15K 1:48:42
30K 3:59:34
13.1 2:36:16
26.2 5:43:31 (shattered by 21 minutes!)

Upcoming registered races:
* San Diego Rock N Roll 13.1
*Make It By Midnight 13.1
*Savannah Rock N Roll 13.1
*Paint the Town 5K
*Space Coast 26.2
*Las Vegas Rock N Roll 13.1
