The only positive things I can think of are that some of our animals have been cleaned and saved...other than that - screw BP! Sorry (I live in south MS)...but I am sick and tired of the lies! We had THOUSANDS of dead fish appear in the water in Biloxi and it was blamed on a net that "broke." Commercial fishing is NOT allowed right now...so thank you BP for sending LIES LIES LIES! go to spillmap.org or download the app if you are an android user...people can post pictures from areas being affected by the spill. I am sickened and it breaks my heart to know what is happening to the creatures of the ocean, as well as birds, etc. Our wetlands and marshes are being destroyed too. :( Ok...off my rant...for now! I pray that God will come in and take over...because BP is FAILING!

I thought it serendipitous when The Universe sent me this message today. I mean, talk about asking for an answer and getting one...!

On the very bright side, Carolyn, never in peace time history has there been such a gallant effort, by so many people, spending so many billions of dollars with no end in sight, to rapidly clean up your environment.

Never before have numerous heads of state and representatives of a corporation as large as many smaller nations, pledged to work together, sharing expertise and resources to get a job done.

Never before have so many prayer and meditation groups suddenly formed, amongst and in between every religion and those belonging to none, to foster healing of your precious planet.

Never before have finger pointers, conspiracy theorists, and blame mongers been so idle and unnecessary in the face of such a tragedy.

Never before have industry titans across every sea chosen to reexamine their own safety procedures, revisit their own environmental safeguards, and expend their own fortunes to voluntarily reflect upon and demand that they do an even better job from this day forward.

And to top it all off, Carolyn, your planet has a loving, brilliant consciousness all her own, and of her countless balancing acts, healing herself is one in which she truly shines.

Of this, and so much more, you can be very, very proud.

Yee-haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

emoticon STARSFORME for that list! It is so hard to see anything positive coming out of this catastrophe, but your list does put a little positive spin on things.

A note on sending hair to Matter of Trust - I went to the site about a week after all this started and got an address to send it. I have 9 dogs and 3 cats, so we had tons of hair to send. I got an email about 2 weeks ago saying thank you for sending the hair, but they are not using it to soak up the oil at this time. I'm not sure if they will in the future, but I just thought I'd let everyone know.

No minimum. I sent in my own hair first, that I was going to donate to beautiful lengths, then changed my mind. It was just a little padded envelope.

STARSFORME--Do you know if there is a minimum to send to make it worthwhile for the program?

2BFITSPARK: go to matteroftrust.org, sign up, and they will send you an address to which to send the hair. I gathered some from my salon and sent it to a warehouse in Florida.

Aren't we a bunch of negative Nellies LOL?

Thank you STARSFORME, you wrote out pretty much everything I was thinking.

I've never really used BP, but my friends who have are boycotting them indefinitely.

This spill let me get rid of a ton of dog hair that would've otherwise ended in the trash. news.suite101.com/article.cfm/dog-ha

But what are BP considering? More unconventional oil production, more specifically investing in Tar Sands - one of the dirtiest and most polluting forms of oil production capable of contributing to a 6 degree warming.

I for one will do what I can to stop it. www.greenpeace.org/canada/en/campaig

At least some senators in CA like Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein support a moratorium on drilling in the west coast. Oil is dirty & danagerous for the environment as so evidently shown in the Gulf. We need other means such as wind power, and creative clean modes to save our environment now and for the future. Without nature being healthy, we'll be in a big, bad, spot! (of oil or something!) I want the country to reduce dependence on oil! No more exemptions please.

1.) Raise people's awareness of the dangers of offshore drilling.
2.) Raise people's awareness of the great responsibility EVERY company has to the environment, making it less likely something like this will happen again.
3.) Raise congress' awareness of the need for more regulations regarding such companies.
4.) Severe punishment for the people responsible, without causing thousands of people to lose their jobs.
5.) Substantial payouts to the families of the people killed in the explosion.
6.) BP and other oil companies "learning their lessons."
7.) Financial repercussions as BP has to pay for damages and loss of wages for people who depended on the sea.
8.) President Obama has been said to have made great suggestions regarding BP and the people of Louisiana that would greatly benefit Louisianians.
9.) Many people are doing whatever they can to help clean it up, which is good for humanity in general. Everyday people (and Kevin Costner) are bringing together their hearts and their ingenuity to create ways to clean up the oil. People are rescuing as many animals as they can, and because of that, many animals will make it out alive.
10.) Getting to see Anderson Cooper's gorgeous face talking about it every night on CNN?

These are all things I hope will happen. It's a desperate situation in which there is little hope but for the future.

I would say that the one and only benefit to this is that hopefully - some of the information about how this will effect the environment might reach those who otherwise do not think about their world.

I'm finding it particularly disturbing how the LA politicians are yelling to get the other rigs back to drilling.

There is a window of opportunity here to push through legislation to get away from petro all together.

I can hope for these things. I do hope for these things. It's the only thing that keeps the nausea at bay.

I'm sure it's okay. I thought your meaning was pretty clear. You were looking for a ray of hope in this mess. If there is one it is that maybe some people who never worried about the environment before will start thinking a little more about it. Maybe people will start seeing that you can't eat money. Maybe.

I never meant to imply that I thought there could possibly be a "silver lining". I am feeling like the greed and stupidity of the human race has hit such a pinnacle that even this isn't going to be a wake-up call.

I'm a life-long Alaskan, and this is so many times worse than the Exxon Valdez spill it makes me angry any time the subject comes up. This is the reaction we want. There is nothing happy about this spill, but all of us need to reflect on the implications for the world. This is something that can be seen and tasted, and if it doesn't make people mad enough to effect real change then nothing will.

environmentally it is hopeless dozens of species will disappear. and it will take half a century for nature to clean itself. it might make a few more americans want to use less petroleum. but the US is not even offered the same level of low/no emission cars like europe. Kia has an electric car that gets over 100 miles between charges and they say it will have a range of 130 miles by 2015. but Kia will not say why they won't offer it in the US, but they do have SUVs for americans. even the american auto makers have and always had better cars for europe then offered in the USA

Unfortunately there is nothing hopeful about the oil spill or any environmental catastrophe. However, I don't think we should look for a silver lining or try to minimize the outcomes when things like this happen because when we try to put a positive to such a negative thing, we make it that much easier for the world to not reflect and ultimately change their perspective of how we should be living.

I truly believe the earth will survive us, but the other millions of species will not. We will not survive ourselves. All the other species on this planet have been here much longer than we have and live so much more sustainably and yet we arrogantly destroy their way of life as we claim superiority over all other living beings. We need to re-evaluate our priorities and consider the process of degrowth/décroissance.

I am so depressed about this. To me, it just seems like an utterly hopeless situation in so many ways. I'm not usually prone to such negativity, but in my head I keep seeing all this poison flooding on and on, moved farther and farther by the waters.
