Pre-diabetes often leads to diabetes but plenty of people have reversed both pre-diabetes and diabetes on lower carb diets.

RUSTY_WOODS -- makes a valid point!
I was told that I was prediabetic based on my blood sugar reading. -- Then, as I've studied & researched, I found that it is "common" to have those in my category end up w/ full-blown diabetes within 10 years.

I feel it is imperative that I address my fatty liver symptoms as well as insulin resistance. Here's a resource/link that I came across today:

Some people can be turned around on 150gms of net carbs a day if they lose weight. I think most doctors any more allow people a short time to accomplish that before they get too strict.Personally I think diabetics need to be treated by physicians and not nurses with advanced degrees but I see it happening more and more now.

I wonder how many diabetics are being told that they have " pre-diabetes ", or on the verge of becoming diabetic.

The original poster was told she wasn't diabetic, even though she has high blood sugar. When i was diagnosed, it was simply one test. If you had a blood sugar over 130, you were diabetic. End of discussion. I think now, they are lying to people, to keep numbers lower than they really are. Kind of like Americans eat more veggies, if we count ketchup, or inflation is low, if we do not count rent, and food. They are manipulating the numbers, so we do not know how bad it really is. Even then, the numbers are getting worse, but at least they can keep up the low-fat health myth for a little longer, if it is gradually getting worse.

The original poster was put on a 150 g of carbs diet. They have a name for that. The DIABETIC DIET. Then, they put her on Metformin.

Any diabetic knows this is how they treat diabetes. She was following 100% of how they treat a diabetic, but not being told she was diabetic. That should be illegal.

Still working on finding time to plan balanced meals. Nevertheless, there has been an improvement in my blood work! (blood sugar out of the "danger" zone)

I don't like yolks so I don't eat them but I do eat butter and full fat cheeses.

Everyone does things differently based on what they need and what they can handle. I personally do best 50-100g (net) but I also have too much love for produce to commit to that all year. I can do it, most of the time cheating, or I can admit to myself I will be over that during peak season. Then I tend to do an Atkins Induction in November, and get on it for the winter. That is me, I have already given up most things people go to out of necessity (Gluten and other food issues) but do cheat with junk and get lazy and gain it all back!

I also cannot do low fat, I have to eat the whole eggs, and the full fat cheeses and yogurts and not skimp on the oil and butter. I will be ravenous if I don't eat enough fat and protein!

At this point for your health and to lose weight quickly, if it was me, I would do Atkins induction. Go to Atkins.com, everything is there. It takes the guessing out of it.

I eat 2 eggs and 2 slices of bacon, or a bit of sausage, or 1 breakfast ham slice for breakfast.

All the fat and protein keeps me happy for 5-6 hours. Next meal is 4 oz protein and any non starchy vegt.
Later I will have a protein shake if I need it mixed with almond milk.

I stay away from all grains, fruit and dairy except maybe a bit of cheese.

I am never hungry and I am losing weight as long as I also watch the calories. If I get hungry I eat a few bites of protein.

I don't want to eat more than 1300 per day.
This is not easy at first, but your body gets used to it after maybe a week.

I cook 3 meals a day 7 days a week and have cooked for many years so I don't use recipes for most things other than things that matter like baking. Salad dressings are really easy and I prefer fresh for most of them. I mix the dressings in the salad bowl - usually the rule of thumb is 3 to 1 oil to acid. I usually use olive oil and different types of vinegar, lime, or lemon juice. There are other healthy oils too but I just prefer olive oil. My favorites are rice vinegar, balsamic vinegar, and red wine vinegar. You can also use orange juice. I add things like crushed garlic, onions, mustard, salt, pepper, low carb ketchup, Worcestershire, etc. Just experiment. It's easy.

Welcome to the team!! I don't use protein shakes but hopefully someone can help you. The people on this team are not on the same kind of diet. I keep it simple.

This is a sample of my daily menu:

Breakfast

Always - 6 Egg whites
Bacon - 2 strips uncured, lean, lower sodium.
An apple
A glass of unsweetened almond milk.

If I am really hungry I can also have a piece of uncured, lean, gluten-free sausage or homemade sausage I make ahead and freeze or even uncured ham.

Lunch -

A large salad with mixed greens, lots of raw veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, green pepper, cucumber, red cabbage, green onions, olives, etc, plus 2 more cooked egg whites, and 2-4 ounces of grilled meat, some grated hard cheese, plus chia seeds unless I add those to my yogurt. I have different homemade salad dressings with vinegar and oil as a base, no sugar. More meat if I need it and a small piece of low glycemic fruit if I am not having one later as part of a snack. I drink water or decaffeinated unsweetened tea.

Sometimes I may need an afternoon snack if I'm not hungry and don't eat much.

Supper
A generous serving of turkey breast, chicken breast, lean beef, lean pork, veal, fish, seafood, etc. - 4-8 ounces before cooking
Sometimes a serving of low glycemic veggies with a serving of a starchy veggie, such as beans, peas, sweet potatoes, winter squash, corn, beets, carrots, or rarely a serving of non- glutinous grains like quinoa. No more than one starch per meal. Usually not more than one starch a day. Usually I opt for 2 low glycemic veggies though like green beans, cauliflower, asparagus, cabbage, Brussels Sprouts, kohrlabi, rutabaga, turnips, zucchini, etc. cooked with a small amount of butter or olive oil or in homemade chicken stock. Plus a serving of fruit.

Snacks are -

My M.D. insists on me eating one yogurt every day.
An apple with peanut butter.
Peanut butter stuffed celery
Deviled Egg plus radishes (I have a thing for radishes)
Hard cheese plus radishes
A serving of low sugar dark chocolate with at least 86% cacao with 1/2 serving of peanut butter.
A 1/2 banana and 1/2 serving of peanut butter - my doctor's idea as I have problem with hypokalemia.

I just saw my PCP yesterday to discuss my fasting glucose level and my insulin resistance level. My fasting glucose level was high and my insulin resistance is high. I was told that I am on the verge of being diabetic. My PCP sent in a prescription for Metformin. She did tell me that the medication alone may help me with my weightloss efforts, but she also put me on a low carb diet of 150 grams a day. She is closely supervising this diet. I am excited about having the close watch and support, but I am nervous that I am going to fail. I do not want to be on insulin shots, so I am going to try my damndest to lose weight. I am so worried that I am going to get bored with the diet. Can anyone share with me their favorite low carb recipes? I know that I can find some on the recipes page, but I am interested in hearing what some of your favorites are! I was also told to start supplementing with Protein Shakes. What are some of your favorite brands of shakes? I have tried a couple, and they taste kind of chalky. I'm trying to find one that I like so that I will actually use them! Thanks for your help in advance!
