Next week I'm leaving for a short art study tour "Southwest Interlude Winter Getaway." Our stops include the Phoenix Art Museum, Scottsdale's Museum of the West, The Biltmore Arizona, Acrosanti, the Red Rocks of Sedona, Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village, Taliesin West, the Arizona State Capitol, and the Heard Museum of Native Cultures and Arts.

Our tour guide is a retired university professor whom I first heard speak at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio in 2014, and I've attended several of her lectures in Austin, Texas, since then. She has provided us with a notebook full of reading materials to study before we go, including books to read and links to various online articles and YouTube videos. I'm looking forward to the trip!

I am continuing to attend lectures at various museums. Last week's lecture was about Jan Van Eyck's "The Annunciation."

The original post for this thread were the following questions. Any comments from some of our newer members? We'd really like to hear from you!

If you have (will have) a degree in Art History what do you plan on doing with it? Or - What is your line of work and does Art factor into it?

This summer I'm still working at providing art experiences for my grandchildren.
Last week I had my 8-year-old granddaughter and 7-year-old grandson (cousins) for a visit. One night we read a book about Diego Rivera and the next day we happened to be in a Mexican restaurant that had art posters on the walls. My granddaughter came out of the restroom and excitedly told me to go look at the Diego Rivera picture that was in there. I was pleased that she recognized his work.
The next night we read about Joseph Cornell and they were intrigued with his collage boxes. We went to four different thrift stores the next morning looking for boxes for them to do their projects in, and we found just the right ones. They haven't started on them yet, but we'll work on those when they come again this summer for their next visit to "Nonna Camp."

I'm getting my MA in Art History and Theory at the University of Essex in Colchester, UK. I should finish in October. After that, I plan on either staying at Essex for my PhD (depends on funding!) or going back to the States to get one there. I eventually want to enter the realm of academia, so a PhD is a necessity.

And by the way, if any of you completing your BAs have questions about going to school in the UK as a postgraduate, I'd be more than happy to talk to you about it. I think it's a wonderful, growing experience and I've really enjoyed it here so far and have met so many people from ALL over. Not to mention, you're so close to the rest of Europe! emoticon

I didn't major in art history, although I've taken many courses over the years. I'm a retired public librarian, and I collect art books. Since many of my books are for children, whenever my grandchildren come to visit they enjoy choosing a book for me to read to them. It's amazing how much art history my five grandchildren know!

A higher degree is almost unquestionable if u just have a BA in ArtH who is gonna hire you? It's almost like when you go for that BA in Art History you are automatically signing yourself up for at least another 2 years of grad school!

I'm going to go on to a Masters of Museum Studies, and one in Portrait Painting, then a PhD in Art History/ Portrait History. I plan to keep working in museum, but you really need a advance degree.... emoticon

Awesome me too! I'm planning on grad school either next fall or the following! I really want to work at the Children's Museum as either an exhibit coordinator or as a director... I can never decide what part of this museum world I love the most... each year it changes so I'm a little afraid of applying for grad school before I KNOW exactly what I wanna do. Otherwise I think I will get an internship for a while and experience it hands on before I make my final decision.

I have a degree in art history and in my job searching, most museums require a minimum of a masters degree plus prior experience. so I'm applying now for grad school for masters of art ed.

I am not sure at this point in time...with so many others, particularily mature students majoring in the arena it may be difficult to get a position.

I have been advised that I should maybe do some PG studies but again, I'm not sure from which angle. I would like to do Asian related art but at my University and many others that is not practical...

sooooooo not at all sure! :-)
