This site has a variety of ideas on what to do for screen-free time:

Last week I realized too that our family had a problem. While on holidays all the kids wanted to do was watch Movies. I was floored and tried to discourage it by playing board games when we had to be in the house. I think it's time to bring back the rule of no tv during the week.

Good for you for recognizing the issue and working to fix it!

Since reading the article here about just how much the television affects our lives, I started watching my family to see just how much tube time we were getting...and wow. That's all I can say because honestly, I'm absolutely floored at just how much tube we're watching, plus add on screen time from our phones and laptops...it's sad to say that most of our time is spent sitting on our hind ends all day...every day. For instance, when my son arrived home from school around 3, he went instantly to the couch after grabbing his DS and stayed there for over an hour and fifteen minutes! We ate dinner, with the TV on in the living room, then right after finishing, he headed to his room and watched Transformers and then Ironman. After his bath, he begged me to let him watch "just a teeny tiny show" before bed, which I refused because it was to late. In one day, for my son alone, he was either watching TV or playing video games...for over four and half hours... When I was little, maybe it was because my family wasn't that rich, or maybe it's because I grew up in the country in much simpler times, but when I came home from school, my butt was outside playing until Mom called me and my brother in for supper. Goodness, if I even TRIED to come back in, Mom would boot me back outside. :-) For me, I noticed that I was getting around...six hours of screen time. Whether that was watching television, on my phone, or on my laptop...I was devoting SIX hours of my day...to a screen!!!! Now, some of it was for necessary things like doing the finances and working on a lesson...but even I have to admit that at least 4 hours out of the 6 was leisure. My husband...well, as soon as he comes in, he hits his laptop and begins playing "Candy Crush"...for hours. He says it's the only time to relax and honestly it is...but man do we have to have a MAJOR overhaul on how we spend our time! Not only are we spending WAY to much time on the tube, but what about time spent together as a family! This was a major wake up call to me...and I refuse to let this continue. I love my family way to much to let it!
