IMHO, if you are going to do a mud run, you really need to get some of your runs done outside and get a feel for it. Don't wait till the day of the mud run to *take it outside* otherwise I think you will be disappointed.

Oh good, glad today's run was better for ya!! yeah I think you are right I need to adjust ASAP!! It's probably best not to wait until the last minute for sure, I'm doing this with a big team at work so last thing I want is to let them down...I have to see them everyday!! LOL

Today's outside run turned out a lot better. I ran the course in the opposite direction, I still had some inclines but not at much as when I ran it the first time. I did much better, it was still harder than the treadmill but I think I'm going all outdoors now as the 5K's that I am interested in running will be challenging! I think a mud run will be very challenging if you haven't been adjusting your treadmill to include high inclines. Try the beach run asap! You need to know where you stand now so you can adjust your training. Good luck with that Mud Run!

Now you guys have me worried...I've only done the treadmill due to the weather just being too hot after work and too dark in the morning (I know excuses right?!) but I know i need to get out there eventually. I feel pretty good in week 6, I am a week behind due to a nasty cold but I finished day 2 of week 6 and it felt "natural" which was kind of cool - still stressing out over week 7 but I always do!! I'm training for a Mud Run 5K on Oct 6th so I should have 2 good weeks after I finish this to start some outside 5K's and I will probably do some running in the sand on the beach to help me train for that mud!! OH man...it's so close!! good luck everyone!!

running on a treadmill and running outside are two different things. The only thing, IMO, they have in common is the cardio workout.

Stick with it Angie! Any cardio is better than none at all. Maybe you can set a goal for running the 5K on the treadmill and then start taking it outside. I have to say I NEVER thought I'd make it. I just kept plugging along....at what I may say is a very slow jog.....and I finished week 8 today!! I have 2 runs this week and then the 5K Color Run in the National Harbor in Washington, DC on Sunday. I am soooo hoping for a flat course! I have to go out in my car to see my actual miles, but I ran 31 minutes today and the first mile was a 12 minute mile. If I were consistent that would mean another 5-7 minutes to get the whole 3.1 done. I am hoping the energy of the crowd helps to pull me along on Sunday.

I do have to admit that I although I am psyched that I will soon meet this goal.....I HATE RUNNING! LOL I am hoping to stick with a shorter run 3 days a week til the weather won't allow it outdoors. It has helped my "inner tube" become firmer and maybe a bit smaller. :-)

Whatever you decide "the plan" is, Angie.....just go the distance. :-)

So I've only experienced two outdoor runs, most of my running has been on a treadmill. I thought I was doing really well. Running at a high level and adding inclines to my run on a treadmill did not prove challenging. Going out there today was a complete failure when it comes to walk 1 min. run 3. The course I laid out included a road that inclines (not very steeply) but was just too much. I ended up doing my own thing (walking mostly) but still tried to run when I could. I think I am going to have to start over and just do all running outside, At my current rate, I don't think I am even close to running a 5K. Bummer.

I am so jealous of your hills!! If I want to do hill workouts, I have to drive 30 minutes and run back and forth over a bridge.

Thanks Suzette! I'll be sure to just keep breathing! LOL

I tried to tackle a 22 minute run this morning and only made it 20 minutes. I felt a bit defeated, but my neighborhood is hilly and I'm hoping that is what has gotten me stuck here. I am going to have to seek out a track or flat neighborhood to see if I can increase my time.

Next week is supposed to be (3) 25 minute runs for me. I'm going to give it my best shot. My 5K is coming up. Yeeps!

Enjoy your weekend!

I've tried the in the nose and out the mouth and I can't do it. I'm a mouth breather and I was told, for me, that would be *my* proper technique. (I also read, as long as you breath, you're doing it right...LOL) Do what feels better for you. Maybe your throat won't burn if you breath through the mouth. I don't know.

I am in week 6 of following Robert Ullrey's Couch25K program. I am supposed to run 25 minutes tomorrow. UGH! I am not latching onto this running is great thing. :-(

I love Zumba, love hiking, etc....but have never been a runner. I think I know what the proper breathing technique is.....in through the nose, out through the mouth. I try to do that as much as possible. However, either way my throat just burns. Not like it is sore....I can swallow, but the back where my hang down thingy is just burns until I stop running. I notice that with this running I am also a bit hoarse. Any thoughts? Ideas?

Also, I am looking for some great music to run to. His music is not very good! I will take any suggestions from your playlists! I am going to make a separate thread for this topic, as well.

Thanks and best of luck to everyone!
Karen

I am going to give my first time this week a 5k try

Carve out what is most important to you first, then allocate your day to others! I promise you and they will be better for this decision!!

Wonderful news!
I'm so happy you didn't quit.

And even happier that you are learning what/what not to eat before running.
Everyone is different so it's good you know yours!!

It's been a weird couple of months. Between my injury and now some craziness at work/home I haven't progressed very far in my running. I'm finally back running regularly and so happy about it. I've made it to week 6 finally and it's going really well. Probably because I did weeks 4 and 5 for most of 2 months. My runs are going well, I've figured out what I should and should not be eating before runs (nothing heavy for lunch even if it is 6 hours before I run. Light. Fruits. Vegetables. small amounts of lean protein. No curry! emoticon and no onions. I think the other folks at the gym appreciate those decisions)

I feel a bit like the energizer bunny - I just keep going and going.

Hope everyone's running is going great!
