Week 5, Day 2: 30 minutes, 4.06 miles. I tried to run a bit faster on the front end, and not to decelerate as much on the downhills. I'd like to be able to maintain this kind of pace for regular runs.

Week 5, Day 1: 30 minutes, 3.92 miles. That's a bit off the pace I had the last couple of runs. Now that I know how far 30 minutes is, I might try to deliberately run a bit faster for Day 2.

I did it!! Super pumped about it as I completed my 5K in 32 min. This is a personal best for me. So enjoyed the challenge being laid out in 5 weeks like this. I'm looking forward to doing my next challenge! Congrats to all who pushed through this and are moving on to their next challenge as well,

Completed my training today with my last 30 min session. I know that I did right in not being concerned about time. I know it will come as I recorded my fastest pace to date. Turtle class is stepping up. Now it's on to my 5K!

Finished the first of my last two 30 min training runs before the 5K. I believe my strategy is working as the turtle class is continuing to pick up speed.

Thanks! I've done most of my running on the treadmill but this week both runs have been outside. I figure I need to get use to the weather since I have the 5K next week and I don't believe it's air conditioned ;)

Melissa, that's GREAT that you persevered and got out there anyway! The heat and humidity take some getting used to.

My second run this week was bad :(

I had to to wait to run this morning, so while I usually run within half hour of having a light snack, I had to wait three hours (until someone could watch my DD). so, I didn't have enough energy for the run and it was pretty hot and humid out by the time I could run. I ended up only running two miles in 21 mins. I did do some water jogging afterwards to get in more cardio though.

My virtual 5k will be on Friday then a real 5k Miles for Moffitt Cancer Center next Saturday.

Ok, we had our work 5k today during the lunch hour. There were roughly 25 people running. I'll admit that I was a little intimidated by the other runners. They all looked like they knew what they were doing, though everyone was super friendly and supportive.

I started at the back of the pack so as to not block any of the faster runners. The pace started really fast and, while I held back to stay on my target pace (9 min/mile), I didn't want to get totally left behind so I picked it up a little. I found a group of folks who were close to my pace and stayed with them. I ran my first mile in 8:22. I thought the fast start would slow me down, and it did a little, but I ran my next mile in 9:11. I tried to stay on pace through the last mile and, surprisingly, stared passing a few people. I was surprised how good I felt, though I was starting to feel some lactic acid build up in my legs--I still managed to have enough left in the tank for a kick at the end.

When the official time was posted, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had run my first 5k in 27:00, which is about 2 minutes better than my previous best on my training runs. I guess race day adrenaline plus having other runner to help keep me on pace was good for a couple of minutes.

I felt great after the race and am ready to run my next one in two weeks. I also have my eyes on a half marathon in October....

When I originally signed up for the virtual 5k, I chose this week. Little did I know that the company I work for was going to sponsor a real 5k this week, and that race is tomorrow. So the big day is almost here--my virtual/real first 5k. I'm very excited because my original goal was just to be able to finish and now I can easily run 4 miles at a stretch without stopping, which I wouldn't have been able to do without this program.

I'll report back after the 5k tomorrow.

Repeated W4 cause I wasn't planning on my virtual 5k until next week, so just starting W5 today! W5 D1 run in (outdoors - yay!) 30 minutes and 2.56 miles. Slow, but I was pushing it, and had a few hills. Being outside is so much nicer than the treadmill, even if I'm slower!

So - 5K done. What do we do next? This challenge has been great for me. It has motivated me to "just do it" and I feel good and have dropped a couple of pounds. Let's do another something... I can do something on my own, but it's not as fun and doing it alone with everyone else emoticon

Haha I kind of did what Valerie did. I ran my first virtual 5K on the treadmill at my gym. But I was not creative like Valerie (wish I've done that), I shared my joyed with my gym and had them took a picture of me when I finished the 5K race. It was fun.

Ran my 5K on my treadmill just like a race - but being very silly about it. I made myself a number and pinned it on my back. 3.1 miles in 33.43 min. Feels very good. emoticon

Today, I really push myself and ran 4.15 miles in 40 minutes including warm up and cool down. Next week is to run two days - 4 miles + 5 miles. WooHoo I am so up to this running challenge.

W5 Run 3. You're gonna laugh. I intended to do my virtual run today, coz my race isn't until 4/9. But 19 minutes in, Arrrgghhhh! had to make an unplanned pit stop. Since I had a moment's "breather" I didn't think it was right to count it as my virtual. So I did another W5 run, reached 5K at 28:46 not including the warmup, made 3.21 in 30 minutes, and 3.53 total in 35 minutes with the warm up and cool down.

OMGOSH OMGOSH!! Guess what! I just ran 3.1 miles in 36 minutes!! WOO HOOO OMGOSH I'm so so proud of myself!

I am getting faster each time I practice, on Tuesday when I ran I did 3.1 miles in 38.16 minutes so I shaved off 2 whole minutes again!! In just a month's time I've gone from not being able to run more than 2 minutes to running nearly all 36 mins!!

I'm so thrilled and proud of myself!!!! I've got till 4-16 when my 5k comes around so I'm confident that I'll be able to beat todays time by then!!

Hugs!
Krystie

W5D2 this morning. Woo hoo! My ankle is pretty good! 30 minutes in 3.09--darn close to doing the 5K in 30 (treadmill, of course--it's cold again here). With 3 min warm up and 2 min cool down, got in 3.45 miles total in 35 minutes. Iced ankles to be on safe side. My race is April 9, so I think ?I'll do week 4 again next week, and then week 5 again the week after that, just in time for my race. How's that sound?

W4D2 done. 3.1 miles, 41 minutes - shaved a minute off my time from last week. Next week, I'll be working on getting down to 40 minutes. Not sure if I'm going to do a 5K this month (the weather is so finicky). If not, will aim to do 2 in April. They are popping up everywhere in my area - DE - so I don't have an excuse not to.

You could start at week 5 or 6 and go from there if you're able to run 3.1 miles you could easily do 4! Good luck

W5D1 done. 2.94 in 30 minutes. With a 2 min warmup and 3 min cooldown, did 3.28 in 35 minutes. Used treadmill, as I didn't care for the wind outside today. (I know, I'm a wimp) Ankle is screaming right now--icing as I type. My 5K is April 9, and am prolly gonna have to walk with the ankle trouble I'm having.

Ladybug I would continue doing the run for 35 mins and then gradually build up, to 40, then 45 and then 50 minutes at the pace your doing for week 5 and that would get you into shape to do the 10k...

I googled it and found this one that another person on the board has mentioned www.jeffgalloway.com/training/5k.htm
l

Hopefully another whos skilled in running can offer better advice than myself, but at least this is a start for you

Just about to start week 5, I won't get my first run until Friday night, but I am feeling ready to really go for it. emoticon to all of you already doing your 5k's. I will do a virtual 5k once I reach the end of the programme and then my first real race is on 1st May so plenty of time to work on speed. I know I can "run" the whole 5k, so next job is to work on the speed I would like to be doing the 5k in under 30 mins, are there any plans to help put together a programme to do this when we have finished the 5k training programme?

I ran my first 5K last week. And I signed up another challenge - 10K virtual race. But I did not find a training program for 10K, like the one we have for 5K virtual race. Does anyone know of a training program that could help me to run 10K? I have never done it before so any advise would help me a lot. Thanks.

W5D3 complete! 43min, 4.32miles.
The wind was brutal and I think I would have done much better if it wasn't so windy because I felt good. The last hill heading into the wind was a toughy but I did it!
My 5k is in 2 weeks and I think I am ready! I think I will spend the next week concentrating on speed and not time or distance. I will strictly do 3.1 miles and go as fast as I can. (Ha! Who am I kidding?)

I did sign up for one of the virtual 5k's but I don't know when it is or if I can find it. I'm still trying to maneuver this web-site.

W5D1 done. 5K in 41.33 minutes. Ran straight thru. I was so busy watching CNN and Obama that I didn't really pay attention to my time. Once I got through the first 30 minutes, I figured I may as well keep going.

Now that I know I can run without stopping on the treadmill, its time to take it to the park. I may have to take some walking breaks at first, but just like being on the treadmill, I'll have to build up my speed.

W5D2...in and done......47 minutes and some seconds..4.72 miles... Whoo Hoo....

I was really shooting for 6 miles today - but I think that jump is too big. I'm going to get comfy with my 3.5 - 5 miles for a while....I have a 10K in mind in July - so plenty of time to train....

Ugh, W5D1 complete, 3.8 miles in 37m25s.
It was a struggle. My 5k is in 2 1/2 weeks and I know I can finish it but I'm not so sure I'll do well time wise. I am not picking up any kind of speed here. I doubt that I will ever be able to do a 10k at this rate.
However, I am proud of what I am doing.
