On Saturday I ran in my final 5K for the calendar year, and I got my best time of the year - 32:52 - hurray! However, it's still not my PR - I got better times in 2010. Oh well. (And none of them come close to my high school times, nearly [ cough ] 30 years ago...)

I even beat my 8yo this time around (first time this year). Both my boys started ahead of me (in the crowd of nearly 1000 people) and he finished ahead of me, but my clock time was faster. i'm not going to tell him. Apparently he felt nauseated quite a bit, and got overheated from wearing too many layers. Meanwhile, I felt great, and actually expected to get a faster time but I was glad that it was the best of the year.

Awesome time Moby!!! I always wonder about those who run barefoot...there's always at least one at every race I've ever seen. I don't think I could do it...

Just Finished the program. It was an awesome feeling. I didn't run fast. Finished in 34 minutes but it was such a great feeling to be able to run that long. I will keep at the 3.1 miles for awhile but I think I will be looking for a great 10k training plan for the future. I love the way we were able to track this plan. It was motivating to see how I progressed in the past 5 weeks. Thanks for having this on here!!!

Yesterday I had an actual 5K race. Adrenaline, competition, and testosterone prompted me to start faster than I could sustain, and faster than I would have started training by myself. I did run the entire course, shaving 57 seconds off my self-timed solo 5K.

Solo 5K at the end of the 5K Your Way program: 21:57, October 15.
Organized 5K: 21:00, November 6

It helps to have real running clothes if I'm going to run in 36 F weather. (I was impressed with the guy who ran barefoot. He was faster than I was.)

Thanks Pam! I ran it again today on the treadmill and got it down to 38 min even. I was happy with that for now. I'm sure the time will come eventually!

Congrats on doing the distance. Don't worry about the time! You did it and you will do it faster under better conditions. I am finally running at an 11:30 pace but it took a while to get there. It is running no matter what your time is. The only person your are racing is yourself. If your like me that is the most competitive person out there though. ;-) Keep up the great work! It torches calories, firms up hips and thighs and helps with bone health. Plus no way those squirrels could have kept up with you so you weren't the slowest thing out there!
Happy running!

I completed my virtual 5K last night. Unfortunately there were no actual races anywhere around so it was just me and squirrels at the park. I started out really well and thought I was on my way to a really good time. It was really cold out and about 10 min in my toes went numb. It made most of my running alot more difficult. After about 25 min I started heating up more and got some feeling back but unfortunately my final time was 41.44 for a 3.11 mi run. I was really hoping to keep it under 40 min. If I get out of work on time today I may try doing it again on the treadmill and see if I can get my time any better.

My co workers & I formed a team for the womens 5k. I am active but never ran outdoors other than high school gym class and that was 20 years ago. So I joined your team to help me train and give me some confidence to do this. Some of my team mates are 15 years younger than me! I am happy to report I finished 1st out of all my team mates. my time was 30:30! I am enjoying running and will now continue to fit running into to my workout rotations. I usually do a different work out every day to keep my body guessing. Thanks for the challenge! emoticon

I just completed a breast cancer run/walk in Deer Park, NY. I wasn't feeling as though I was going to have a good run day, but as it turns out, it was my best time. I ran the 5K in 33 minutes, better than I've ever run and a good 4-5 minutes faster than I ran last year..Hopefully, I will continue to pick up the pace and am trying for another run in December for arthritis...Good Luck everyone!!!

Okay...I was going to wait to do the actual run on Halloween but I felt good this morning and it was a perfect fall day for running. I ran 3.13 miles in 33.05 (10.33 pace per my Nike+ stuff). I was so excited. It was the first time I was brave enough to run outside off my treadmill. I was pretty happy with my time. I started a little fast so I think that ultimately hurt my time. It is definitely different from running on my treadmill! I knew it would be. I ran on the streets in my neighborhood so I only saw a couple of people. At some point I will go to the park where I walk to run. I had a bowl of Hi Lo Cereal (12g protein/serving) with dried berries a little over an hour before I ran. Now I can sort of call myself a runner. Woo hoo! Now I going to train for the 10K distance. I think I want to go see a race to scout out what it is all about before I actually sign up for one. There is a 5 & 10K the first Saturday of each month at the beach. I think that would be fun. I may check out the November one before signing up for the December run. I will do the 5K distance. Congrats to everyone who did their virtual 5K.

Congratulations to everyone racing!!!
I just did my solo run this morning and my pace improved from the past month. 3.1 miles in 38.29 minutes (pace 12.23min/mile). For the past few weeks my pace has been 13 or 14 minutes/mile. I started slow and then picked up a notch. Thanks for the challenge.

Giving up is not an option!

Hubby and I ran the witch way 5K last night. We both came in 13th in our age groups!! I ran at 10 minute mile throughout which is my usual. Now I hope to continue training and push my time a bit. The weather was beautiful here in central florida and it was a great evening event for family as well. Exercise and sports can add so much more to your life beyond the fitness benefits... it can be social as well!

Today was Week 5, Day 3. Race Day!

I have no local 5K today, so it was a timed solo run. The best I could do was visualize other runners and try to push myself like competition would. So I set out to start fast, like I would in a competitive field.

The forecast was for mid 40s, rain, and wind. Got up this morning and it was 48, with wet pavement and sidewalks but not raining. Did a gut check, and decided to run in shorts and a tee shirt. I pushed myself on the front end, and got to my normal 5 minute checkpoint in 4:30. After that, the 5K route diverged from the training route so I didn't have good comps.

The second long straight stretch, I found the wind that the forecast talked about. It was in my face, and a jacket would have been nice at that point. Midway through that stretch, a light rain started. I recalled an inspirational quote I saw on someone's signature yesterday: "Life is not about waiting for the rain to stop; it's about learning to dance in the rain." Or in my case, learning to run in the rain.

Throughout the run, I thought about how hard I could push myself. When I needed to back off the pace, I visualized the better runners passing me. When I could pick up the pace, I visualized passing runners who had slowed to a walk. (I actually did pass one guy who was walking, but I don't think he intended to run any part of his route.)

Got to the last short stretch before my driveway, and sprinted the last 80 meters or so. Finished the 5K in 21:57. That's a 7:05 pace per mile, better than I expected.

I now have a standard. I don't think I can run under a 7 minute mile for a longer race. If I can stay under 7:30, I've done well. The closer I can get to 7 minutes flat, the better I've done.

I've got a local 5K coming up on November 6, Daylight Wasting Sunday. It starts at 8 AM. Today was a good practice for it; hopefully the weather will be no worse than it was today.

I started running 7 months ago and purposefully made a Fall 5K one of my goals. I started training for my very first 5K in August using the 5KYourWay program, but had to stretch the standard 5 week program out to 9 weeks in order to coincide with my race date (10/8). I liked having the several extra weeks of improvised interval training. I normally run solo, so on race day gathering together with 740 other runners was a bit bizzare. I dutifully seeded myself toward the back of the pack and just tried hard not to get tripped up as everyone exploded toward the start line. Would hate to train all that time just to wipe out before ever reaching the starting line !! My goals were to cross the finish line, and do it in under 45 minutes. My chip time was 39:49 so I'm very pleased, especially because during the race I felt like I was moving slow! So not too bad for a 48 year old who's still 60 pounds overweight. Have I officially become a runner now that I have a PR ?? Can't wait to do this 5K thing again .... but will wait till next spring when the snow here in Minnesota finally melts.

I ran in a local 5K today. Two of my children joined me - they are 8 and 11 years old. The 11yo is on the cross-country team at school, but had not run a 5K before. He finished in 28:24. This the fourth 5K for the 8yo- all of them since May. Unfortunately, he had a very bothersome cramp at the beginning and we had to walk most of the first quarter mile, so he had his worst time of the year (still pretty respectable at 31:52). Once he gets started, though, he really takes off - he finished almost 3 minutes ahead of me. I lost track of him about a long block after that initial walk! Due to that initial walk, I got a personal worst (instead of personal best :^) of 34:39.

The 11yo really enjoyed the thrill of the race (*) and wants to run some more, so we're considering one that is on November 12th. There's a race at the end of October at a local haunted orchard kind of place, but it starts early in the morning, too far from home, so I'm trying to talk him out of that one!

Thrill of the race: this event finished in Michigan Stadium - we entered through the tunnel that the players go through, down to the end zone then up the center of the field to the 50 yard line. The finish line was projected on the jumbotron score board. That was quite a rush of excitement, let me tell you! But there were more than 6000 people in the 5K, so the roads were pretty crowded for the entire event.

I completed the Step Out to Stop Diabetes this morning in San Jose, CA. It was a 10K, which I completed in 1:14. I ran the first half (5K) in 35 minutes, but then had to walk/run the 2nd half, which slowed me down. This is the first time in over 3 years that I was able to run for 3.1 miles in a row.

I did it! My first 5K. I felt so good at the end, I ran another 1/3 of a mile. 48 minutes which was faster than usual. I now look forward to running that distance regularly and picking up speed. Any speed suggestions would be most welcome!

SMURF-I think 39 minutes is great! My first 5K in June was over 40 min. I did my second one today and was 2 min. faster.

I work out on the elliptical 2 days a week and run on the road once or twice a month. I've been increasing the level and speed in intervals on the elliptical. I also wore my watch today to help with pacing.

I ran my race on Sunday at the Bellingham Bay marathon, half-Marathon and 5k. There were almost 400 of us in the 5k. I got 35:44! So much better than I expected. The best I had in practice was 42:00, so I was stoked!

Yesterday I ran in the WellsFest 5K in Jackson, MS. I started running in April (did Couch to 5K). This is a whole new world for me; I'm 55 and have never been a runner before. My first race was in August and I'm thinking I'll try to do a 5K every six weeks or so. My time yesterday was 38.25, six minutes faster than the August race. I'm really stoked!

How to start this .... I started with putting on my fav socks and running clothes pyching myself up as I went, I made sure this time to stretch; which made a huge difference. Laced up my shoes and I was off. I run on a treadmil because the roads by my house are like the Indy 500. What a great run .... I covered up the clock focusing only on my mileage and I'm glad I did because it took away all the mental blockages I had up about "making time".

I finished in 31:12 .... And I can't stop smiling. =) Thank you to everyone who has supported, motivated and helped keep me going these last 5 weeks. Can't wait for the Trot in October!

On 9/17/11 I ran my first 5k race. 38 minutes on the dot...as far as I can tell. They said they would be using chips to tell a person's real time but tney didn't. Maybe they didn't have enough participants after all. The sign said 38:10 but I was toward the back of the group and I actually believe it took longer than 10 seconds to pass the starting line. However, a few seconds under 38 minutes doesn't really change my speed and it's much easier to say 38 minutes instead of 28:55 or something like that. Hehe

I ran most of the way but there were plenty of times I walked for a bit, usually about 30 seconds at the most though sometimes there was a minute of walking stuck in there. Lazy of me, I know. I felt so at the time but I was so tired that I just didn't have the willpower to urge myself. I didn't push myself as hard as I felt I could/should have. But that's okay because I still beat my best treadmill practice time by a full 2 minutes. Yay! Running on the treadmill is much easier than running outside for me so it makes me very happy to have beat my time. Hehehe

Next time I run a 5k I'll try to push myself harder and do better. But that won't be for a long time so I can forget the hardships I just put myself through. Lol. It's the day after my race now and my body hurts everywhere because, in the excitement of completing my first 5k and my exhaustion, I forgot to stretch afterwards. I tried to warmup again later and stretch but it didn't work. The damage had already been done I guess. Oh well though. I'll do some stretches again today and see if I can't lessen the aches.

Don't think I'm complaining - I'm laughing right now because it was such a silly thing for me to forget. emoticon

I DID IT! I'm not sure what my official time was, but I think it's around 35 minutes. And this time last year, I had just started exercising again by walking a mile a day. ~pats self on back~

My 5k race day was actually 2 Sundays ago. I did it in 30 minutes and 4 seconds. I won third place in my age category. I was very excited!

Today I ran the full 3.1 miles on my treadmill, plus a little extra for warm up and cool down. My warm up consisted of a high incline and a fairly fast walk, so to run at 0% incline actually felt like a break! I felt so good once I got going that I just kept going. Once I realized I could keep up the jogging pace I just wanted to see if I could do 3.1 and make it an official 5k.

Personal best today in my 6th 5K. I know it was 28 minutes and thirty-something seconds. I think it was 32. Feeling great!!! I placed third in my age group and got a medal.
