I especially don't know what to wear at this time of year when it is Fall. I usually overdress.

And don't forget to wear a hat and sunglasses and sunscreen are still important.

We live in the cold Tundra, so this has been on my mind. Winter is coming, and I'm afraid a treadmill just isn't going to cut it for motivation. I didn't know there was such a thing as ski runner pants! I may have to check it out!

Although I don't have to worry about cold weather too much, I have run several Halfs in chilly weather. I found layering was the secret for me.I also discovered the runner's art of wearing clothes you want to get rid of or donate. At the St Petersburg RocknRoll Half, all clothes taken off and left on the street were picked up by a crew, washed, and donated to charity! Love that concept. The starting temps were 42 F and finishing temps were above 60. The tees and sweatshirts were flying!

2 years passed and I ran outside both winters, 4 times a week -
Climate here is quite mild here, winter temperatures are usually -5 to +5 oC / 23 to 40 oF.
The coldest I ran in was -13 oC / 8 oF.
This is what I learned:

1. even if weather looks nasty through the window, once you go outside you find it is not that bad at all, rain or snow.

2. I didn't need special clothing. Running burns lots of calories and they keep me warm.
Normal running pants and 2 layers on upper body are OK down to -4 oC/ 25oF, plus a fleece headband and thin gloves.
If it is colder than that, I add a jacket and a pair of running thighs under the pants.
( I bought nice ski runner pants but weather was never cold enough to put them on).
Everything I have is made of synthetic wicking material.
I'm never cold during the runs, but I'm often cold after finishing - it is good to have an extra jacket in the car for the cool down walk.

3. shoes:
My usual trail running shoes are somewhat water proof, and they are good for snow. Snow is solid and does not leak in.
Melting snow does leak in, but it is rare and tolerable during 40-50 minute runs.
When snow gets trodden on, packed and turns into ice, then I put snow cleats, they provide traction and safety.

4. it is a good idea to use lip balm when it is cold

Maintenance Lessons Learned:
-go on with the healthy lifestyle learned in weight loss phase
-just add healthy foods gradually to stop losing
-work out every day - 30-60 minutes is enough to maintain weight and good mood
-do not try to balance overeating by extreme workouts, it is not going to work
-avoid overeating, instead of satisfaction you get stronger cravings

Hi, I'm in Week 5 of running program, and I got to like running very much.
I plan to run 2-3 times every week, but weather is getting rather cold.
That kind of clothing/shoes are good, when there is ice and snow outside?
Please help!
