Glenna, Sis is like part of our group. I like hearing about her. I'm glad she's sweet and gentle, too. I was thinking about why I didn't want a chance to milk the cow at Alpenrose Dairy and I think it was because a neighbor used to let her cows graze in the pasture behind our orchard gate which was downhill to grandma's house. When my sister and I wanted to run down the hill to grandma's if one of the cows, Judy, was out there she was mean and would chase us. My sister says she saved me from Judy once.

I guess you all know my answer to that question. I have milked many, many different cows over many years! And I drink whole milk. I haven't made butter in awhile or cottage cheese either.

Sis is an exceptionally big cow, as most Brown Swiss cows are. But she is as gentle as a kitten and thinks she is kinda like a dog. I am glad she is so gentle and sweet.

I have never milked a cow. I do have lots of good memories of my grandpa milking cows. I do not drink milk but try to have a little of 1 or 2 percent on hand for cereal, coffee or other recipes.

Never milked a cow. In grade school our class went to Alpenrose Dairy to tour and you could try to milk the cow but I didn't. That was a wonderful place. At Christmas they opened Storybook Lane all decorated for families. At the end of the school tour we went to a cafeteria there and got a bowl of ice cream.

I use 2% milk and get lactose-free milk for Bruce's cereal. emoticon

I have never milk a cow. I did buy raw milk from a lady for my DS who seemed to have problems with store bought milk as a young child. I use to make butter from the cream. Years ago though

This is a picture of Sis standing out by the barn. Which inspired my question of the day.

Sis and I each saved 25 cents, and sent away for a camera on the back of a cereal box.
Can't remember much about it, except it cost a whopping 50 cents total.

I had a brownie camera and I don't think there was a flash attachment. When I married Bruce he had been in the army and got a really nice camera while he was in Germany and traveling around. That took really good pictures. Even I was able to take pictures of Troy when he was a baby with it. Then one day we left it with the strap dangling off the table and Troy pulled on it and it fell to the floor. Sadly when we finally took it in for repairs we didn't hear from the business and found out he went out of business and sold to someone else. Never did get it back.

I missed the question on games as a kid. I played lots of hop scotch at school. Also played jump rope & jacks.

I played jacks, marbles, pick up stitcks. It's hard to remember if they were when I was a kid or my kids were kids on some of them. I really liked jacks. Hubby and I were just talking about them the other day.

I've never cooked on a wood stove and Mom and Grandma didn't have them in my time- probably before that.

I did use a wringer washer in Aunt Hattie's basement. She had a wash tub down there that it drained into. Lots and lots of cloth diapers. We hung things outside to dry if the weather allowed or inside on the back porch or in the basement.

Nina, I think the detergents were a thousand times better back when my kids were little.

Glenna, I remember the Clorox and Aunt Hattie would use Mrs. Stewart's Bluing sometimes. Mom always used Tide and Hattie used Cheer. I think it was Cheer.

I don't remember a washing machine at Grandma's house. Maybe in her dark, dank basement.

Both Mom and Aunt Hattie had mangles. I learned to use one but always with a warning that some child had caught her hand in the mangle. Same thing with the wringer washer.

Several years back when we first moved to AZ on our 40 acres with no electricity. We had some solar. Someone gave us one of those washing machines. I had water and ran the generator to use the wringer washing machine. I actually thought that it cleaned better than any washing machine i had used. I hung up all my clothes then. No dryer. Took too much power.

I have not cooked on a wood stove, but an older gas range will show you in the picture I take of the packing house. It was refurbished to use now.

I have used both. When I was first married in 1979, we rented a house. It had a wood-burning cook stove. I'd put my wash water on the stove the night before and then when I got up the next morning, start a fire. My wash water was hot by the time breakfast was over and dh was off to work.

Everyone around here, started with the whites first. With clorox, of course. Then you did the regular colored clothes that were least dirty. And last of all the really dirty work clothes. And a bucket of rinse water was handy to mop with!

I remember Pop Goes the Weasil and the others you mentioned Glenna. Also Rockabye Baby in the Tree Tops, Polly Put the Kettle On (and we'll all have tea), Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Two I used to sing to my kids were from a book of nursery rhymes they had: Crows, crows, old black crows, nobody knows where the red fox goes, nobody knows but the old black crows! And that's the truth. Yesterday when I was working in the back yard the crows were having a fit cawing because there was a black cat sneaking along the back of the fence. They ruined all her fun.

NATIONAL POP GOES THE WEASEL DAY
On June 14th each year, National Pop Goes the Weasel Day celebrates a nursery rhyme children have been singing for more than 300 years. On this day, people dig back into their memories to the nursery rhymes they learned as children and celebrate the day singing “Pop Goes the Weasel.”

The origins of this nursery rhyme are believed to date back to the 1700s.

I like peanut butter. I remember making some of JoAnna's cookies with some peanut butter in them, just not sure where the recipe was. At least that is what I think I remember. I have not made any in a long time either. I have been using the PB2 which I just recently discovered. I use it in one of JoAnna's pie filling with FF cream cheese. I just make it and eat it like a pudding with no crust. It is really good.that way no fat.

I do like peanut butter and I usually choose Jif. Usually in a sandwich. I like mine with dill pickles on it and a glass of milk. I love peanut butter cookies but haven't made them in a long time. Peanut butter cookies was one of Aunt Violet's specialties. I can remember her making the little criss cross on top with a fork. Oh, and then there's peanut butter pie!

It was in the early 1920s peanut butter began to be listed as an ingredient in cookies.

Incidentally, The peanut butter we know and love today didn’t become commercially available until the 1920s. In 1922, Joseph Rosefield kept the peanut oil from separating from the solids through this process. Afterwards, he patented the process of homogenization and sold it to a company that began making a peanut butter called Peter Pan.

emoticon DO YOU EAT PEANUT BUTTER OR SOME OF THE OTHER NUT BUTTERS? DO YOU MAKE PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES?

I love, love peanut butter. I think it is one of the major food groups!!! I haven't made peanut butter cookies in ages. I like them, just haven't made them. Probably a good thing because I'd eat far too many.

Jan, I found pens at Dollar Tree that write aqua, orange, pink and green. One color each pen...cool.

I have many pens that I have picked up at different heath fairs. I use them rather than pencils mostly because my pencils need sharpened.

My 11 year old great grandson sometimes ask if I have a pencil he can use.

I use pens. I don't like the way lead breaks off on mechanical or regular pencils. I feel like I can trust the pen to write unless I get signs it's running out of ink. When I was a kid I loved purple ink pens.A friend who had moved to another state wrote letter in green ink and I wrote in purple ink.

I use to use a pen also. I now use mechanical pencils. Having problems with pens drying up here sometimes. Actually I think I like both. Just depends on what I am writing. I do like being able to erase mistakes, as that seems to happen a lot now a days emoticon

I prefer a pen. My hands don't cramp up as often with a pen, than they do with a pencil. They seem to glide along the paper, whereas the pencil needs to be pushed...just mho
I do crosswords with a pen.

Today, June 10, is national ball point pen day. They were invented in 1943. Before that you had the option of a fountain pen or pencil.

Which do you prefer to write with??? A pencil or pen???

I generally use a pen. Although since buying mechanical pencils, I do use them quite a bit. Especially with crossword puzzles.

Potato salad & baked beans. We have been having a day time picnic at a local park near a swimming pool. We get our own sandwich from Subway. I usually bring watermelon & others bring chips & cookies to share. We may not get to do it this year.

When I was a kid sometimes friends would invite Hattie & Violet on a drive and sometimes a picnic. I remember once Hattie had leftover sturgeon in cracker crumbs fried that she brought along, or open faced egg salad sandwiches or open faced shrimp sandwiches. For my family it was weiner roasts, S'mores, sometimes hamburgers in our back yard. Watermelon! emoticon

I drink my coffee black. On a rare occasion (Thanksgiving or Christmas) I might get a pumpkin spice or eggnog latte.

I drink hot tea or iced tea with Splenda. There is one tea I have on occasion and I can't think of the name of it! It smells like a campfire and I drink that with hot milk and Splenda- really good. I also like herb tea - peppermint or other herbal tea- with Splenda. I have a sweet tooth except for my morning coffee.

I always quit drinking caffeine by noon- sometimes by 10 am.

How do you like your coffee? And how do you like tea?

I like lots of milk in my coffee. And I can drink sweetened, iced tea or hot tea with milk and sugar.

Some people are just gifted with an ability to sew. For those people it's like a duck to water- easy peasy. Karen, my Mom said my grandmother could sew anything without a pattern, too. When Mom was in nurse's training she could show Grandma a picture of a uniform and she could make it. I am not gifted that way, either.

I really wanted to learn to sew. I took Home Ec & also took adult classes. My mom was a great seamstress. She did not need a pattern. She made my kids some things when they were small. I just did not get the hang of it!

I took a lot of secretarial classes and loved home economics.
I could type 90 words a minute on a manual typewriter when I left high school. It sure was hard to slow down, as the electric computers were getting jammed as it could not keep up.
My mom taught me to sew. When I was married one week, I told my DH I had to have a sewing matchine and we got one used.
I sewed a lot for my kids and myself. I also taught 4-H sewing a couple years. One of my girls went to State and got a Blue Ribbon. She was in her last year of 4-H and she called me and asked me if I would be her teacher so she could enter the California State Fair. I really did not have to teach her anything. I just had to check out certain things. It was a lot of fun. DH and I went to that fair which was 3 hours away so I could see her outfit on display. I was so proud to have taught her and then helped her later.
I never did go to work as a secretary. Became a wife and mother and I stayed home for the most part. Had a few small jobs.
Well that is all I can think about right now.

Mom taught me how to sew. She has an old treadle type Singer machine. That is what I learned on. I have made quilts and lots and lots of clothes. It has been a long time ago, but I used to sew a lot. I remember the first quilt I made when I was just a kid. Compared to my sewing now it looked really shabby, but I sure was proud of it at the time.

I taught myself to knit with a book. I was in 5th grade at school. Then the kids got to bringing their yarn and needles to school and would work on it at recess and noontime. I remember my first big project, after house slippers, was a pair of mittens. I was just learning and I was so proud of them. I took them to school and asked the teacher, "which side is the right side and which is the wrong side?" I honestly had no idea. I had knit them wrong side out, with the purl side out. But I was proud of them none the less. The teacher was proud of me and got the teacher from next door to see my "work of art"! LOL

I also taught myself to crochet. And mom taught me to embroider. I used to do all of my pillowcases. Remember the MR and MRS ones? And the lady in the big fancy dress?

I tried to learn to tat, but never caught on to that one.
