Wanted a long one with weights this morning, so tried a new-to-me one of Amy's & was pleased with it: 34 Minute Full Body Dumbbell Strength Burner Workout. I added this note to my personal workouts list (multiple sets at regular, half, third & double time; used mainly 3.75# 1st time, 2# & 3# late shoulder/tri).

Here's my comment on YouTube: "I previewed it first (at 65 with joint issues, I'm careful) & thought I could do it. I went with medium weights, shifting to light ones for some late overhead moves) & did OK. I know I will do this again & try increasing weights on 1 or 2 moves at a time. I was surprised that it was my back calf that burned & almost cramped on those lunges. And I tried the one leg bear plank but couldn't feel anything, so did both but on one flat hand & one fist, then changing hands back and forth, since it's my wrists that have trouble with bearing that much weight--left elbow always aches, too. Anyway, thanks for a real challenge that I can grow with!"

Funny that I just posted a comment on a new 40 minute workout that it seems like most of her new ones are long (30-40 min), and I'd really like more short ones of 10-15 minutes to fit into work breaks. This would run a little over, but I can also mix up 2 or more for my longer sessions.

Because it came up next automatically after the above routine, I finally tried 8 Minute Standing Six Pack Ab Workout by Amy from 2017. Good and short--really worked my hip flexors!

I'm happy you are finding some that will work for you, Paula. Sometimes I want to challenge myself, sometimes I need something easier. I know Amy has a short workout for back issues, and Jessica Smith has a few for a bad back. Silver Sneakers has some gentle routines for seniors, and Ask Doctor Jo (a physical therapist) has lots of stretches and exercises for all different body parts!

She does squats, lunges, push ups, plank, back extension: really basic for first round, offers slightly more advanced versions for second round (but you can always choose to stay with the first version).

Great exercises here and I have saved them. Some I like more than others but all are great. Having back problems that I need to keep at bay along with arthritis I want to keep as mobile as possible. I am the only one who can do this and finding exercises I can do is a huge bonus to keeping mobile.

Brand new today and long workout from Amy. I was the 3rd person to comment: Oh, my! Not only was I pausing to guzzle a lot of water, but to mop the sweat off my face and neck, too! Really liked the longer cardio segments & some new moves with weights. But I have to say, at 65, I just can't get down to the floor and back up that fast! I also did a lot of wrist circles afterward, since they were aching by the end. Definitely will repeat this one when I want to challenge myself. Thank you, Amy!

Here was my comment: "I was really enjoying the class, with your emphasis on having fun & feeling graceful--especially appreciated the tip not to curl toes under, which has led to foot cramps in past. Had to alternate arms a few times when shoulders protested. But the swan arms really made my wrists and shoulders ache, so I had to completely change the move. Then there was almost no stretch, especially for my poor arms! So didn't end on a high note, though I liked most of it."

I started her feel good fusion workout, but decided for a more challenging one for my morning workout. I'll try that half hour one this afternoon and report.

True to it's name, it isn't intended to push you, though I worked up a light sweat, and have room to grow with some of the balance moves (tried some, stayed with the tap down version of others). Mostly it's very flowing with some gently stretching, toning and cardio elements. Quite delightful!

I tried another Tabata workout! But fair warning--only try this if you want to challenge yourself and are ready to SWEAT: 30 Minute Cardio Tabata Workout to Burn Calories and Blast Fat!

But keep in mind Amy offers a low impact version for each circuit, so you can stay with that one though all the circuit rounds or keep lower impact modification of any of the subsequent versions. I admit I was getting pretty winded and wasn't sure I could finish the workout, but paused and saw I had gone 20 minutes, so just 2 rounds remaining, with that minute break between rounds. So I backed off a little bit, but finished all the rounds, guzzling water and mopping sweat during those 10 second rest periods. I may not do this one frequently, but I'm hoping to see my endurance increase as I return to it over time.

Brand new today by Amy: 25 Minute Quiet Cardio Tabata HIIT: Low Impact HIIT No Equipment. One time I tried a tabata routine, but didn't like it and gave up, but the name intrigued me, and I liked it. It's intense, got me sweating, but it's an interesting format of 20 seconds high intensity, 10 seconds rest, 20 , 10, for 4 rounds, then a minute rest between the rounds. It goes fast, and there's no time to get bored by any move, and if you don't like a move much, you only do it for a short time. I'll do this one again and may try some of her others

Tried a new (to me) short one by Amy for beginners. Really liked the first part, but had issues with the 2 floor moves, and her assertion you will be able to put body weight on wrists (and elbows?) if you just build up slowly. Here's what I wrote on YouTube: I appreciated the clear directions on form. I used light weights, and could really feel the benefit of those pulses--a new variation for me. Thanks! I managed to get through the pushups on a chair with stretch in between, but elbow ached along with wrists by the end. May try chair on knees instead of feet next time. Since joints are such an issue, what's a good alternative to pushups for similar benefit?

Amy does it again! a 12-min workout a beginner could do that can be modified easier or harder depending on your level. This was my comment on YouTube for this new routine from 3 weeks ago: I thought I hated Pilates--the only floor routines I've tried hurt my neck and back horribly. But this I loved! Great workout that got me sweating and breathing hard, but short enough to fit during a work break from my telecommuting job & easy on my joints. Thank you, Amy!!

Just tried one of her longer ones from 6 years ago, and it was great! Low Impact Beginner Workout is 24 minutes long, very gentle & encouraging, clearly cued, builds the movements, offers lots of modifications to take up or down. It has a nice balance of cardio and strength. She is by far my favorite instructor out there!

Here is the comment I posted on YouTube: As a senior with joint issues, I appreciate you starting with the low impact version where I stay, then showing the higher impact version for those who can handle it. Because of shoulder issues, I had to do smaller circles on the final (butterfly stroke) move, but I did them fast, and switched directions. This is a good workout to fit in a telecommuting work break!

My comment: I liked this, but had to modify pushups, due to wrist and elbow issues--I can't put my body weight on my hands. I gripped the sides of my chair which allowed me to get my arms wider than my chest and prevent excess pressure on a flexed wrist--an issue with many, many workout routines.

Like I said in my status today, WOW! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon I submitted a question about the issue below [2 posts back] on the Yoqi website just yesterday, and had 2 replies waiting for me early this morning! The first was a standard one about how Marissa (the founder of the site, instructor on the videos) is too busy to answer individuals, but I can check FAQs and consult my PCP. But the second was from Marissa herself, who gave me an answer and said she added it to the site FAQs for practice, and thanked me! Amazing! Here's info on her

"The standing postures reveal where we hold unnecessary tension or have weakness. This is not a bad thing, it is a great opportunity to help you heal. The more your practice and address the blockages the stronger you will get. In this case, you can lower your arms, relax and then raise them up again when you feel ready. To help strengthen your joints there are other Qigong exercises that will help you, such as Spring Series Purge, Tonify and Circulate. Also the Yi Jin Jing is amazing for the joints."

I found another great practitioner on YouTube--Dr. Jo, a PT doctor with lots of videos, though most just introduce exercises without taking you through a "real time" routine. I'm working with this one now--10 Best Rotator Cuff Exercises for Strengthening--watching the demo, then pausing while I practice it, using the count up function on my timer to add up the time I'm spending on the actual exercises. I'm halfway through the 10, and taking a break from them for now.

Warning, if you try the Yoqi Qigong for Beginners 30 min routine, I left this comment:

"I'm glad I was introduced through shorter videos first--the Daily Routine, Mood Lifter, & Purge & Tonify. I loved them all, and was eager to try this one. I was fine until near the end: the Zhan Zhuang standing meditation with arms raised and held still for 3 minutes created a lot of new tension and discomfort that hadn't been there. By the time we were told we could rest the arms down and then bring them back up, all that wonderful relaxation had already been lost. Should I just stick with shorter routines?"

So if you try it, know you can lower the arms to rest them and raise them again (or not; I may need to build up slowly if I decide to try this again, and not just stick with the others).

Tried another Zumba class by Cindy (Silver Sneakers) but despite better sound, cues weren't clear, and the short weighted section focused on the class (who seemed mostly lost) instead of her, so proper form was never emphasized. I don't think I'll be trying her again.

But OMG! Tried another qigong routine by Yoqi Yoga & Qigong (see last post for my intro to the practice) called Qigong Mood Lifter, and ADORED it! These are easy to follow, and make me feel better. I want to start doing them regularly!

Ooh! I'm only 9 minutes in, and I like it already! 30-Minute Stretch and Mobility Follow-Along Workout, Silver Sneakers www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuR1

I decided I could have it on, and do it in pieces between calls. I finished the first section using a tennis ball or stress ball under your feet, and my feet feel tingly and energized up into my legs--it's wonderful! So I recommend finding a ball that will work and having a chair handy to sit, or hold for balance, especially when rolling the ball under one foot--and those suckers like to squirt! emoticon
I finished it--in a few pieces, which was absolutely fine, and I loved it all. When I hunted up my small firm squeezy ball and a somewhat larger & softer one (the former I used for foot rolling and the second for calf rolling), I also found a small box with resistance bands and an old but strong bathrobe belt which I used for another foot stretch section of this workout. You work on lots of parts of the body, especially feet, legs, trunk, some hips and neck, and he stresses stability, mobility, and flexibility, breathing and engaging your brain to work with you.

He suggests you do these sets a couple of times a week, and again, you can break them up if you don't want to do a full half hour at one time. I highly recommend this flexibility workout!

I didn't like this one either when I tried it. It was an early video of hers. I don't know if she answers through email, but she does often interact with her Facebook group and answers questions there. I hope you hear from her and maybe she does a "redo" with modifications for the poses you talked about.

I mostly liked it, but ran into a problem I have with ST routines, too. When I took kung fu, I learned to do table top position on my fists, but I'm not sure that's right for this. I've asked in comments, sent an email on Amy's website, but not gotten a reply. It's frustrating! This is the comment I wrote on YouTube for this video:

I loved parts of this, like encouraging self-expression and feeling the moves and pose instead of focusing on how we look. But I lost it in the middle--ended up in tears--because I CANNOT put full body weight on my wrists with flat palms. I tried on my fists as I modify with other exercise routines, but it was awkward, and I had to stop and resume at mountain pose. How do I modify my practice--or do I just have to sit out moves that cause intense pain?

That sounds especially good right now, when the advice nurse said to go easy on exercising while back is bothering me. emoticon for sharing! emoticon

I tried it, just on the laptop on the floor, and did okay for ~ 12 minutes until the "windshield wiper" move with bent legs--not enough room where I was, and not sure I wanted to try something that might twist my back, plus knees have been tender lately. Will try looking for yoga routines with her on the TV; I saw one to the side on YouTube for sore backs.

If you are looking for a very gentle, hatha yoga practice I suggest Adriene's Cozy Yoga. You'll need a blanket and a pillow as props, but you don't shift them around a lot. It's about 20 minutes and is all floor exercises. If you don't go on the floor you can probably do this one on a bed.

Tried a brand new Amy workout (from 5 days ago), not as good as others. Added this comment:
"I definitely sweat on this. I liked the upright section, but as usual, I was left trying to figure out my own modifications on the floor, since my wrists can't support my full body weight. I also don't move as fast as you from one position on the floor to the next. As a result, the workout didn't end as well as it began for me."

I was feeling twinges in my back this morning, so wanted to go easy. I love Amy's 10 Minute Beginner Low Impact Cardio Workout For Fat Loss. I went with the more advanced modifications, but a true beginner can do this routine with her beginner/basic moves.

I will try the Bodyfit by Amy 16 Minute Standing Low Impact Legs Workout--No Squats or Lunges!

I have to be careful which exercises I do due to hip, knee and back problems. I walk and do more chair exercise so I make sure I do not stress my joints.
Being DH's carer I have to make sure I don't stress joints and end up out of action but still need to exercise.
No excuses, exercise is important to me and I set goals each week to make sure I get my exercise in every day.

As always, it's balanced, she gives options, and I had my trio of weights--3, 3.75, 5--using different ones depending on the moves.

This wasn't as intense or sweaty for me, but then I was learning new moves. I'll definitely be doing it again, and slowly moving to heavier weights.
