It's my understanding that while drinking 8 glasses of water isn't a necessity for most people. However, if you are trying to lose weight you should drink half of your body weight in ounces of water in order to help flush out the fat.

I can feel a difference in my energy and alertness level if I don't have enough water. I don't know that 8 glasses a day is the one size fits all solution, but for myself I need about that (more when it's hot, less when it's cool) just to feel like myself.

I'm looking for my inner athlete, but I'm afraid I may have eaten her. If I'm very quiet I can hear her screams of terror.

I do thing that water is important, but to use it as a replacement can be a problem after awhile. Too much of anything can be bad after all. Its a matter of moderation.

You know TINY, I'm not too sure how I feel about that water advice either. I would like to read something on the other side of that argument. I don't really have a problem drinking water but personally I can't ever tell how different I feel when I drink more water. Then again, I've never been a fan of juice or any kind of sports drink so I drink water to satiate my thirst.

Below are links to two different New York Times opinion pieces that I found really interesting. The first talks about the perils of adopting a weight-loss plan that requires participants to ignore or endure hunger.

The second argues you don't need 8 glasses of water a day.
