Hi just joined this challenge. Tomorrow will by day 1. I need to follow this challenge to get my cravings under control. I want something sweet more than once a day. I need to revamp my kitchen and take a look for the hidden sugars. The list on the info page showed my some items that I had no idea was sugar. No wonder we have such a hard time loosing weight.

I once completely cut out both sugar and flour from my diet and (through the help of a support group) was able to stick with it for well over a year. Physically, I never felt better. I weighed about 12 lbs less than I do now, and had energy to spare.

The only bad thing was that I was still completely crazy in my head about food - I couldn't stop thinking about sugar, and was totally terrified of making a slip up. I don't believe that it's sustainable to completely remove a food from your diet, unless it's something you are allergic to or something like that. I would *love* to be able to completely cut out sugar/flour/refined foods, but I am trying for moderation here.

So with this challenge, I would like to be able to control the urges and cravings, and perhaps even to be able to enjoy a bite of chocolate or a spoonful of ice cream without wanting to go back to eat the entire thing. So who knows, but here goes.

starting this challenge this week. I crave something sweet every day. every day, it's crazy! I have replaced sugar with stevia for breakfast, etc. But I crave ice cream and baked goods on a regular basis. I've found baking my own goodies very helpful in the past, but now I find myself eating more than one portion of my lower fat/lower calorie goodies (sigh!) I also used gum in the past when I craved something sweet, but then became addicted to gum, going through entire packs in a day or two. This challenge will be quite difficult for me, but I think I need it!
Good luck to all of us

When I go shopping, I stay on the outside isles of the market. I don't go near the bakery because I know what will happen. One can never put enough frosting on a cake, the more frosting the better and you can never have enough filling in a pastry. I stopped going down the cookie and cracker isle because there is always a BOGO deal going on. Who can resist getting your favorite snacks two for the price of one - this also includes ICE CREAM. I used to hide double stuffed oreo cookies when I came home from shopping because I didn't want anyone else eating just one. I have kicked the cookie, cracker and ice cream habit but I will always love CHOCOLATE! I buy a bag of truffles and only eat one a few times a week. It's better than eating a couple of candy bars. I started eating frozen fruit and feel much better.

Hi Teresa (4myhearthealth) - You need to experiment to see if you can just get by eating a small desert. For many of us, one taste sets us off on a sugar binge just like one drink can do with alcoholics. If you can truly eat in moderation (best to define that, too so you don't lie to yourself about what is moderation) that is great. When I've been eating really well (with no sugar) for several weeks, I can have a really small desert item away from home. I learned that I can't eat much sugar without losing control - I hope that is not the case with you. emoticon

I don't think there is a specific set guideline for how you wish to accomplish taming your sweet tooth. It really depends on what works for each person, whether it be cold turkey for some or just moderation for others.

For me, if I eat just one piece of chocolate, I have to have the WHOLE bag! Once I didn't have any for a couple of days, my fruits stated taking over that need for the sweet chocolate that I loved. It is not easy, but worth it! Best of luck!

Ok so I see a lot of people talking about completely cuttting sugar out of their diet all together. Is that the only way to tame our sweet tooth? I guess I am concerned because I am all about eating less and controlling how much sugar I eat but I am not sure about total deprivation? I was proud of myself last night we went to Cici's and normally I have a whole plate of dessert but yesterday all I had was a small brownie. This was a victory for me and I don't know that I will be able to completely cut out all sweets.

Once you get through the tough days of not eating any sugar, you start feeling really great and sweets are easier to resist. emoticon After the sugar detox phase, the only time I start craving sweets is when I eat something with more than 11 grams of sugar. That seems to be the tipping point for waking up the sugar monster. For some people that number may be higher or lower. Diet soda doesn't make me crave sweets. emoticon Once in a great while I drink about half a diet soda - it would never be my beverage of choice - don't need those strange chemicals in my body. The only way I can think that diet soda might make me crave sweets is that my sugar monster knows the difference between the fake and the real and may get upset if I cheat it out of the real thing.

Studies are mixed on the diet soda issue. Some say they increase cravings, other say they don't. The main things is, are you drinking them to cut out the sugar in the soda only? Or, are you replacing that missing sugar with something else. If you replace that missing sugar from the diet soda, you will probably gain weight. Good luck to you!

I will officially start tomorrow since I signed up just a while ago. I really need help to stop putting food in my mouth when I am not hungry.
Does anyone know if diet drinks cause you to crave sweets? This is going to be hard. I have a family reunion in about 8 months and I want to look better for that. Thanks for any suggestions. Also, I am going to start walking at home with the Leslie Sansone DVD's.

Day 4. During the week, I struggle between 1-4pm. The girl in the cube next to be has a bowl of fun size chocolate bars and I usually break down and have a couple. Today I had 1 bar at 3:30pm.

This is day 5 for me. I have learned that I mainly crave sweets after a meal and habitually "need" something snack on while driving. So far the thing that has worked best for me is gum, especially the strong mint flavor. I originally tried the sweet flavors thinking that would be a good substitution, maybe tricking my taste buds into thinking I had eaten something sweet. That was not a good idea. It just made me crave more sweets. But the spicy mint completely gets rid of my craving. I am astonished! emoticon

ELLY2017, I know exactly where you're coming from! I have the same problem. I have often been in the middle of eating something sweet (my weakness is pastries), thinking about how it doesn't even taste good, but still not be able to stop eating it!!! It is SO frustrating and definitely defines an addiction. Good for you for taking a step towards conquering your sweet tooth! emoticon

My friend lost alot of weight. When I asked her how she did it she said that when she has a sweet tooth she sucks on a lemon. Can anyone validate this claim?

Day 2. Identifying my cravings- I am the worst between 1-4 at work. There is a bowl right next to my cube filled with fun size candy bars and I have gotten in the habit of dipping into that at least once a day. I sometimes have cravings at night after dinner and I would eat Dove dark chocolate. I am out so I won't buy anymore.
I am usually tired when I reach for chocolate. My new strategy will be to get up and walk around and drink water.

Day 1 - Too easy really. I've just finished that time of the month. It's September 1st and a Sunday. The perfect combination for a new beginning. My challenge will really begin at the beginning of my next cycle. I have the mentality that I can eat whatever I want that first day. Sugar detox is good. I'm ready to hit it full stride and forget the Swedish Fish, Nerds Rope, and coffee ice cream I inhaled yesterday.

you speak to me! I have been fighting the last 5 pounds for a month now, I lost 2 and was so excited then I gained it back and can't seem to get rid of it! I just started a WLC Friday. I have a hard time with sweets to begin with, then at work I make them so it is very hard for me to not eat them. Thank you for your story, as yours is very similar to mine!~ emoticon

It is hard to observe without that observation changing the behavior, but here is what I learned during this first week: emoticon I eat sugar out of habit, it has become a coping mechanism that I tend to reach for even when I don't need to cope. emoticon I actually get sick of eating it, but I still eat it. emoticon Sometimes the idea of not eating this much sugar makes me want to rebel. I know the dangers of too much sugar, and some crazy part of me then wants to deliberately eat the stuff. emoticon I've been working on salt reduction which seems to turn me toward eating more sugar. emoticon Finally, more sleep would be my best assistant in continuing to make healthy choices, esp. in nearly eliminating sugar. emoticon

Day 2 and day 5 was the worst. I finally told my husband that for the next month we can not have treats in the house. That helped me telling him. I had to admit it to myself also I was going to do this. lol

I did not do well today. I had some chocolate and a small piece of cake. I have done so well this week and then today, I had food that would not normally be in the house.
My Granddaughter and Niece were here. I can't blame them. Back on track tomorrow.

Hi All!

This challenge is really helping me. Day 4 went well. Lots of greens. Read Dr. Joel Furhman's book, "Eat For Health" (?). Attending to my nutrition overall is a big help. The more positive attention I give a goal or challenge the better I do. emoticon

Day 7
So far so good :) With every day that passes, my cravings become less and less. Yesterday I had a little slip without even thinking though :-s Popped a square of dark chocolate in my mouth and was mid chew before I even realized! Resisted the urge to carry on and eat the rest of the bar though. haha
The only thing in my world over the last 6 days that tastes sweet has been the odd protein bar... I'm trying to figure out in my head if they are allowed. I know the Paleo model is to avoid anything processed, but after a 2 hour drive home from working in Toronto yesterday and with 2 minutes (not even!) to throw on my workout gear and head to crossfit yesterday, I didn't have time to whip up a turkey dinner with all the fix'ins :-o I only buy the Quest bars though. They seem to fit my diet pretty closely... All natural, no grains, no sugar added... and tasty!

Day 6

Still hanging in. My A1 sauce had sugar in it, but other than that I have stayed on course.
My Granddaughter brought a loaf cake she had made over and I did not eat a bite.
The fudge my Niece made is still in the freezer untouched.
This challenge is just what I needed.

Hey there, Sparkies,

Day three for me now. It's going better. Getting the triggers out of the house is a good plan. You go! I try to do some hand work or list making at night. My husband is a big TVer and TV boars me. Doing stretches in the evening works for me, too, while he's watching TV.

I did well, yesterday. Yay! Ate like 16 Fruits and Veggies. Too many calories, but I'm working on one thing at a time. In the past what's worked for me is changing up the quality first and then going for quantity. Posting every day is also a big help. Also working on mini meals during the day with a planned snack at night. So far, so good.

Hey! Good for you. I am just starting this challenge. I crave sweets in the evening - I think because I am bored. I love chocolate, too, but will eat other candy too. I have gone for days without any sweets in the evening but I always seem to come back to them. Gonna try not to have them in the house! Good luck to you, Linda

Artsy girl - very cute not wearing the fudge!

I'm learning lots. Yesterday was day 2 and was better. I added a big salad before dinner and it helped. It seems like the more servings of fruit and veg I get, the less room there is for sugar. Is that a duh? I didn't do as well with timing meals and snacks and so will try that again today. I am also trying to spread the calories more evenly throughout the day rather than most in the evening as I think that habit has been working against me.

have a great day everyone!

Hi all,
It's nice to see others checking in here. It gives me a boost, so thanks to all of you.
I'm on day two this morning. When I thought about yesterday my first thought was it did not go well. Then I remembered that the week of journaling is to record what happens, not necessarily try to change it right away. If that's the case, I'm good. I recorded. But I ate lots of sugar and ate it out of control. Oh well, it's not my measure of inherent value. I would like to trust the process more. Today in Spark Coach, I'm supposed to eat according to the clock. That may help, it's helped me in the past. I'll let you know how it goes. My trouble time is in the evening, so I'm scheduling dinner and an evening snack. Have a good day!

Today is day 4 for me as well. I joined this group a little while ago now, but struggled at first to make myself commit. My weakness is dried cranberries and walnuts. One of the biggest issues I seem to run in to is the way my family enables me by encouraging this cheat. "It's a healthy snack at least" my mom always says. The problem is, once I start munching, I can't stop! I'm the worst when I let myself get really hungry too. Then I can easily chow down 1000 calories of this "healthy snack" in a matter of minutes. :(
Anyways... today is day 4. I haven't been looking for a substitute for the cravings, but rather trying to do a better job of eating when my body tells me it needs fuel to avoid the over-hungry cranberry cravings. As soon as I eat ANY sugar, I crave it...

Day 4 today

This week will go well. No company or entertaining. This is always a challenge to me.

Day 1: replaced chocolate chip cookies (my son made some...) with dried apricots.

Hello Everyone!

I decided to join this challenge because, once again, my inability to say no to sugar (especially when it's in conjunction with fat) has led me to gain the weight that I had lost last month back. :( Now I"m feeling disgusted/disappointed/sad/pissed off about how I look and how I feel. I have a family history of diabetes, and I do NOT want to go down that road. I had some bloodwork done a couple of weeks ago, and my fasting blood sugar levels are on the low end of normal, which is good...as long as they don't go much lower consistently! Today is day one of the challenge for me and I'm hoping it'll stick this time.

Howdy all!

I've joined this team/challenge a number of times without much success. My goals for week one:
1. Check in here daily.
2. keeping a daily journal as suggested in the week one checklist, even when I do eat sweets - this one is a bugaboo for me.
3. completing the rest of week one checklist - done the rest already. Yay!

Hello all!

What brings me here? The same 3-4 pounds I keep losing and re-gaining for the past 3 months. I need to bust this plateau and I realize cutting on sweets that I allow myself for snacks far too frequently might be the way to do it.

I look forward to this challenge and the tremendous support in this team!
