Just a funny story about salads. Years ago, a niece who is a teacher, was talking with a female student, in her class who was overweight, She talked about the good foods and especially salads and asked the girl to ask her mother to give her more salads -- or words to that effect. Some time later the student said that her Mother WAS giving her more salads --- potato salad, and macaroni salad!

Popeye, you crack me up lol.... guess that maybe why I feel better than I have in a while though. Since I've started tracking my calories (mostly this week)I've been actually budgeting in 2 of the hershey's minatures, one milk one dark. Every day. right off the top lol... it's my reward at the end of the day for not going over my calories or fats or carbs ect! and because I take it right off the top it don't go over having them either!!

oh and for everyone waiting for it... I posted my salad from last night on my blog.... I think though that when I make my salads i'm going to start taking a photo of them and posting that too! cause it sure looked pretty last night!

I know this isn't about salads, but I just read a Harvard Medical review that eating candy and dark chocolate (either/or or a combination of the two) not only helps keep free radicals away, but it can lead to better blood supply to the brain and heart AND, the bottom line is that people who eat the equivalent of three candy bars a month could live as much as a year longer than non-candy/chocolate eaters.

It went on to say that chocolate eaters were happier and had less depression then people who didn't eat chocolate.

A follow on article suggested that the were chemicals in chocolate that had psychotropic properties similar to psychedelic drugs. One of the responses from a lady they interviewed caused me to doubt some of the claims. She claimed that "Eating chocolate was better than sex".

I guess I need to look for a different brand of chocolate than what I eat!

Nobody has ever made a similar claim for salads.

I but the organic Baby Spring Mix with Herbs and love to make my own dressing. I love adding cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, beets, radishes, artichokes, peppers, and tuna. Also that is the bases, but it varies what I put in and will change what I had and love it when have fennel and other strange vegetables. I also like to try fruit salads as well but no fond of mixing the two.

sandie, I totally understand you problem... my is kind of the opposite... I dislike most lettuce. I like spinich leaves, and romaine lettuce and that's about it... things like iceberg make me gag unless it's really finely chopped and added to tacos or something else like that. at my former job, i used to go to a restaurant across the street like 2 days a week and would have a grilled cheese sandwhich and a "side salad" where they would just leave the lettuce out! how many times I have had people look at me funny for that one hehe... and sometimes hubby makes huge chef salads with everything and kitchen sink thrown in... I'll take all the veggies (usually cucs, green pepper, and leave the lettuce behind. he just laughs and laughs.

Ruth, one thing that I've gotten into the habit of doing is I buy a couple of head of lettuce (usually green leaf, red leaf or romaine hearts). I clean all of them, tear the leaves and store the lettuce an open plastic bag in my crisper. That way, I'm not cleaning lettuce every time I want a salad. It's not much different than buying those bags of prewashed/pretorn lettuce, except mine if fresher and a lot less expensive.

Ruth, I had heard that, but I have a problem. I don't like salads. I can eat some lettuuce, but no onions, tomatos, radishes, cukes etc. I don't care for salad dressings, so it would be great for me to eat salads. I could add alittle lettucwe with tuna for a change. I am such a picky eater and I have tried not to be. Sounds like a reat plan and I wish you well.

Hey guys... I saw an article the other day that suggested eating a salad a day to kickstart good eating habits. But not super overloaded salads. I'd challanged myself to do this for 2 weeks and see if I like it. If I do I'm going to try to do it longer. My problem though is that I have trouble coming up with varying ideas of a good salad. I'm hoping you guys could give me some salad ideas. Ideally they would have a protien, plenty of veggies, no iceberg lettuce, and a really good flavor. Thanks for the help guys! (oh and I plan to post what salad I had each day on both my sparkblog and my facebook page.)

Hugs, Ruth
