Yes---shading of reds is hard...sometimes you need to check out different brands and pick from more than one brand in order to get the effect you want.
I tend to stick to things I can design without so much background work before the actual crocheting.
Have fun working on it!

I can understand. I know the colors I want pretty much (the reds are hard, though), I just can't figure out how to do it. Maybe if I study other animals, even if not the dogs, I can figure out how to do it. At least I can figure out the legs. Not sure about the muzzle, ears and tail.

2probably not...specific breeds are hard, and it would take more research into yarn colors than I have time for with 4 kids here.

Can you design an Australian Cattle Dog? That is what I want to try to do.

Yes, my profile photo is from a design I did several years ago. I don't think it's still in print. I have a few that are online.

I havenít done as much recently due to the needs of my kids.

I think I remember you had a design for something a couple years ago that was inn one of the crochet magazines, didn't you. I never could find the magazine, though. I just wish I could do something like that.

Right now I am trying to get back into painting and drawing, too, but not succeeding too well. I did a live online class this morning, but it stopped running on me half-way through.

Whimsical animals are pretty easy, but realistic, breed specific are more difficult. At some seem more difficult to me. I designed a cat modeled after Pete the cat, because cartoon characters are easier for me. To design a breed specific animal, you would need to combine a good knowledge of crochet stitches and the effects you get with different varieties if sts with kern attention to detail.
I can design, but I am not good at explaining how I do it...

Can someone tell me how to design my own patterns? There are a couple things l would like to do, like crochet animals, but I don't know how. I can find books of patterns for some animals, but not what I want. I know someone who does knitting and can just come up with an animal of any kind (usually dog or cat) and never has to have a pattern. She will do them of friend's pets all the time. I want to be able to do my breed, but I don't know how. Would like to be able to do other breeds, too. Plus I'd like to be able to do one of my cat.
